In this episode, we spoke with Josephine Cruz aka Jayemkayem who is a multidisciplinary creative entrepreneur based in Toronto. For this conversation, she drew on her experiences as a DJ, running an independent record label, Bare Selection, alongside her partner Freeza Chin, and all she does as co-founder and director of the community radio station, ISO. Jayemkayem used an analogy of her real-life cousin in London (UK) to describe the potential connections she sees between Montreal and Toronto and she spoke to the power of grassroots collaborations with people and spaces holding shared values as a way to build those linkages. One of the keys we discussed was how creative uses of spaces (including not being dependent on physical spaces) can strengthen this inter-city collaboration.

Josephine Cruz aka JAYEMKAYEM is a DJ, a music writer and a record label manager.  She has been living in Toronto for three and a half years now.  Her main reason for moving from Calgary to Toronto was to work in the music industry.  For years, Josephine has played at venues all over North America, opening sets for Playboi Carti at Montreal’s Apartment 200 and spinning alongside SOSUPERSAM at Echoplex in Los Angeles. Her eclectic style of Hip Hop and R&B to Grime and UK Garage has brought people to the dance floor night after night. Before that, Josephine was working in marketing. Josephine shares how she was able to trust herself and her abilities to live a more authentic and truthful life doing what she loves instead of living for other people's definition of success.  Check out her episode to listen to her story. In less than three years, DJ, radio host and music curator Josephine Cruz, aka JAYEMKAYEM, has already become a well-known name in the Toronto nightlife scene.   In addition to DJing at clubs in New York City, Los Angeles and Shanghai, she recently collaborated with Paul Chin to launch the 24-hour radio station pop-up, Istolethesoul FM.   We talked to JAYEMKAYEM about how she learned to DJ, her growing sneaker collection, and why she felt compelled to launch Istolethesoul FM.
