Francisco de Saavedra was Spain's ultimate shadow architect, operating like a CIA station chief or Charlie Wilson funneling weapons to topple Soviet Afghanistan, coordinating resources across the Caribbean through the Council of the Indies while gathering intelligence on British naval movements. The silver he raised, equivalent to roughly $1 billion in World War II war bond drives when adjusted for inflation, paid French sailors and provisioned Washington's Continental Army for the decisive siege. Today's guest is James Giesler, author of Francisco De Saavedra's American Revolutionary War: The Spanish Contribution to the Battle of Yorktown. We discuss the unlikely career of Saavedra, an intelligence officer for the Spanish Crown who had such adventures as being capture by the British in 1780 and talked his way out of Jamaican captivity by pretending to be a civilian, why he forced joint Spanish action to capture Pensacola in May 1781 and eliminate the British southern strategy, how he negotiated a treaty for French and Spanish military planning for the first time, and why he planned the 1782 capture of the Bahamas to keep British ships tied up in the West Indies instead of reinforcing Cornwallis. After receiving his first guitar at age 10, a determined Michael became self-taught with the help of his bedroom radio, spending days on end playing along with Jimi Hendrix, Wes Montgomery and B.B. King records. After studying jazz guitar in high school, an impromptu backstage audition for George Clinton in 1974 earned 17-year-old Michael a seat on the Parliament mothership alongside the immortal Eddie Hazel, under the name “Kidd Funkadelic”. Hampton has spent the past half-century playing nearly 400 shows with the band, in 25 countries across 6 continents. Highlights include multiple appearances at world-renowned festivals like Montreux Jazz, Glastonbury, Reading, Woodstock '99, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Roskilde, Lollapalooza, Fuji Rock, and Isle of Wight, and venues like the Apollo Theater, The Fillmore, Royal Albert Hall, Madison Square Garden, The Troubadour, Red Rocks, The Beacon, and Sydney Opera House. Among Hampton's Funkadelic writing credits are group staples like “Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!” and “Funk Gets Stronger”, both released during the group's late- '70s/early-'80s hit run. His lead guitar is also embedded in the DNA of 90s hip-hop's G- Funk movement—Dr. Dre's “Let Me Ride” samples Parliament's “Mothership Connection”, Ice Cube's “Bop Gun” borrows elements of Funkadelic's “One Nation Under a Groove”, while De La Soul's “Me Myself and I”, Digital Underground's “Kiss You Back”, and Snoop Dogg's “What's My Name?” all draw from Funkadelic's “(Not Just) Knee Deep”. Michael's colleagues include George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Maceo Parker, Charlie Wilson, Dewayne “Blackbyrd” McKnight, Fred Wesley & The JB's, Chuck Treece, Dean Ween, Primal Scream, Digital Underground, Too $hort, and Deee-Lite. Bienvenidos, cinéfilos hierberos, a un nuevo episodio de Cinefilia y Otras Hierbas, cine, televisión, música y videojuegos para escuchar.Hoy, continuamos con nuestro ciclo dedicado al gran Aaron Sorkin –ese maestro del diálogo afilado que nos hace creer que la política puede ser tan entretenida como un partido de tenis verbal–, nos sumergimos en Charlie Wilson's War, esa película del 2007 que, admitámoslo, no es la primera que viene a la mente cuando pensamos en su filmografía, pero que destila ese ingenio sorkiniano que tanto adoramos.Imaginemos el panorama: finales de los años 80, la Guerra Fría en su apogeo, y un congresista texano llamado Charlie Wilson –conocido como "Good Time Charlie" por su afición a las fiestas, el whiskey y las compañías femeninas– que, de repente, se convierte en el artífice de la operación encubierta más grande de la historia de la CIA. La película se basa en el libro homónimo de George Crile, un tomo de 500 páginas repleto de detalles históricos que Sorkin adaptó con maestría, condensando intrigas geopolíticas en diálogos que chisporrotean como fuegos artificiales. ¿Cómo llegó Sorkin al proyecto? Pues, en un raro acto de agresividad profesional –él mismo lo admite–, leyó el libro y lo persiguió con ahínco, convirtiéndolo en el único guion que ha "cazado" de esa manera. Led by Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, and Philip Seymour Hoffman's stellar performances, Charlie Wilson's War is mostly the best political film Nichols made; you just wonder if he ever needed to chase this whale in the first place considering this film is still a lesser script from the acclaimed screenwriter behind it. On episode 89 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch contributor Josh Parham to discuss the next film in their Mike Nichols series, Closer (2004). Things got a little rough for Mike Nichols at the start of the 2000s, with one of the worst films of his career and the decade with What Planet Are You From?; an horrendous idea of a film from the mind of comedian Garry Shandling. Just a few short years later though, Nichols returned to the big screen with a film adaptation of the popular play Closer, about four people entangled in a romance in rather sadistic ways. A controversial piece of work, this is a call back for Nichols, who much like earlier in his career, was fascinated by relationship dynamics and the idea of sex, as covered in films previously in this series, i.e. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Carnal Knowledge. Led by an excellent ensemble, Closer feels somewhat like the culmination of filmmaker, though no everyone on this episode will agree with that statement. Ryan, Jay, and Josh break down their thoughts on the film, if it has aged well, which of the four actors gives the best performance, the dated needle drops to throughout the film, and how Closer uses the idea of time passing throughout the film.
