Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace Projects: Spreading The New Contemporary Art Movement

Known for its emphasis on figuration, surrealism, and pop culture, the New Contemporary Art movement has roots in the irreverent, high-energy counterculture of the ‘90s. Largely self-supported and community-driven, the movement has slowly taken shape beyond gallery walls, incorporating “lowbrow,” accessible, and socially-activated work by artists that tend to fall outside the mainstream. On today's podcast episode, host and NOT REAL ART founder Scott “Sourdough” Power sits down with Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace Projects to discuss the curator's leading role in the New Contemporary Art movement. As the co-founder, curator, and owner of Thinkspace, Andrew is an authority on all things street art and L.A. subculture. “We're blessed to know a lot of people,” he says. “We've got our toe in the subculture. If we're able to help be that mouthpiece that helps expand that bandwidth for those folks and get them seen by the general public and let them live their lives through their creativity and their God-given gifts and stuff like that, that's a pretty special thing.”For nearly 20 years now, Andrew's discerning eye for emerging talent, commitment to community building, and passion for pushing culture forward has resulted in an exceptional roster of lesser-known, mid-career, and established artists from all over the world (as well as a close-knit circle of loyal art-lovers that keep coming back for more). “In LA, a city that's probably got [a hundred things going on on any given night], we're pretty blessed to have [so many people in] our community that are always showing up, month after month, to support us and our artists,” Andrew says. “We try to never lose sight of that.” In this episode, Andrew gives us a glimpse into Thinkspace's history, charting its unconventional trajectory from a passion project to an internationally acclaimed gallery space. Tuning in, you'll learn how Thinkspace's focus on collaboration and community benefits both the gallery and the artists it supports. Don't miss our conversation with the visionary curator behind Thinkspace Projects, Andrew Hosner. In Today's Podcast Episode:Andrew Hosner discusses…How Thinkspace found a foothold in the up-and-coming L.A. art sceneThe history behind the gallery and their unconventional approachThe collaborative mindset that underpins Thinkspace's marketing strategyHow Thinkspace's focus on community benefits both the gallery and its artistsThe gallery's process for working with international artists and galleriesArt as a spiritual product that benefits your health and well-beingThe juxtaposition of gentrification and economic development through artWhy he refers to his ever-expanding art collection as a “roadmap”Insight into his approach as an art dealer: “If I wouldn't buy it, I won't try and sell it to you.”Why it's better to have art on the walls than money in the bankFor more information, please visit http://notrealart.com/andrew-hosner

So many business owners believe that a brand is developed once and that's what it always is, but in reality, all brands are changing and evolving. This evolution is extremely important because it means that the business is growing. Listen as Anjul and Erin of Thinkspace discuss the brand's evolution and what it means for the future. Anjul started in the furniture industry after spending years in the beauty space. Erin left behind marketing “large refrigerator boxes on mountains” for the fun and complexity of furniture. Both of these women have come together to help Thinkspace change the way companies create beautiful and functional spaces for collaboration and focused work. Since they started, Thinkspace has evolved from a one-product brand, to a suite of products all designed with productivity in mind, no matter how big or small the space.Which is why it was time to refresh the brand. The evolution in the business created a need for an evolution in the brand itself. Now they have their own dedicated space at The Mart and are frantically prepping for NeoCon 2023. Erin and Anjul have some amazing takeaways on why business growth begets the need for brand evolution and how even small changes can make a huge impact. Listen in to hear their thoughts and learn all about what's coming up next for Thinkspace. In this episode:[01:50] Anjul and Erin share a bit about themselves, their roles at Thinkspace, and how they got into the furniture business.[07:07] Erin and Anjul let us know what they love about the furniture business. [09:43] Who is Thinkspace? [13:18] Anjul talks about how she and Mark got the business started and why. [15:36] Is there any one thing that they did that felt like a pivotal moment in building the business? [17:49] What is a brand? [20:39] How does Anjul want people to think of Thinkspace when they think of the brand? [21:45] Why is brand evolution so important to growth? [22:51] How is Thinkspace's brand evolving? [26:37] Erin shares how the brand evolution was represented in Thinkspace's logo.[28:42] How does Anjul identify product and brand partners?[30:34] What you can expect when you visit the Thinkspace area at the Mart.[33:56] Erin and Anjul share their final thoughts as we wrap up.Links & Resources:Support the Trend ReportJoin us at NeoConEpisode 117 - Customer Experience with the Coaches RoundtableConnect with Anjul Chandi:ThinkspaceLinkedIn | InstagramConnect with Erin Torres:Thinkspace LinkedInConnect with Sid:www.sidmeadows.comEmbark CCT on FacebookSid on LinkedInSid on InstagramSid on YouTubeSid on Clubhouse - @sidmeadowsThe Trend Report introduction music is provided by Werq by Kevin MacLeod Link:https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4616-werq License:http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

It's been a month since we've been here with a new episode. We're excited to be back!   Joining us today is Steven Biersteker (pronounced beer-staker), a Canadian architect from Thinkspace.    As a child, Steven wanted to be an inventor. When he discovered that you couldn't major in “inventing,” his combined strengths of art and math sent him in the direction of architecture. He attended University in Toronto and then moved to Vancouver. He recaps the training required to become a certified architect in Canada.   Steven's time in small firms gave him a broad range of experience. The company that he works with now, Thinkspace, focuses on larger, institutional projects, such as schools, civic centers, etc.   We confront the fact that many people in the construction industry demonize architects, passing blame back to them. Steven shares the architect's perspective that involves being two or three years into a project by the time a shovel digs in. He discusses the challenges of walking through the design process with decision-makers who don't necessarily know what they want and might need a bit more hand-holding than clients in the corporate world.   We discuss the effect that Value Engineering has on the flow and budget of projects. Steven shares how he and his team will guide clients through the process of scaling back when a project begins to go over budget.    Here are some other things that come up in our conversation: the fact that logistic-minded construction workers may whine about complicated design that ultimately makes a space not just functional but inspiring, the effect that various software packages have on the design, AI image-generation software and the role that it can play in the design process, the excitement that sometimes comes with the challenge of considering the whole range of considerations and thinking about the ripple effects of design changes, the fact that many of the design choices a construction team might blame on the architect were actually choices made by an insistent client, the need to “elevate the conversation” in order to get design feedback from the people who actually use the spaces that we design and build. In the case of Steven's work, this would be the teachers and students.    Our discussion reveals the confounding disconnect between architects and the workers tying rebar or pouring footers. How ridiculous is it that the majority of people working on a building might not have a clue about the end function of the building that they're building?    Steven's Megaphone Message: As an industry, we need to be working together to produce better spaces. If we can see ourselves as common players.    Find Steven Online: LinkedIn, His Website, His Thinkspace Page Find Us Online: BrosPodcast.com - LinkedIn - Youtube - Instagram - Facebook - Eddie's LinkedIn - Tyler's LinkedIn If you enjoy the podcast, please rate us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to us! If you don’t already know Lauren Hana Chai, I’m honored to be the one to introduce you to her because her work is brilliant. I had a ton of fun connecting with her and we hit on a lot of ground in this conversation: the ins and outs of how she’s arrived at the work she’s making now, all about her show last year at Thinkspace (from making the connection to the prep itself), how she manages her income streams and mayyybe even the story behind the DMT trip that influenced her recent work. We talked about…. -- transitioning themes in the work -- how Lauren connected with Thinkspace and approaches email outreach -- Lauren’s DMT experience and how its influenced her work -- How and when Lauren went full time and her different income streams BIO Lauren Hana Chai is known for contrasting her traditional Korean upbringing with her modern American life and including a personal story or cultural narrative to accompany each piece. As the first in her family born in America, she was raised by her South Korean grandparents in Hawaii. She moved across the Pacific to San Francisco to study at the Academy of Art University. After some time following the technique-based curriculum, Lauren says she relished breaking the rules and mixing abstract elements into the work. Her current series places side by side traditional elements, such as Korean folk art and Buddhist temple architecture, and modern elements such as interracial relationships or sexually charged figures. She has been featured in NBC News, KBS World Radio, Houston NPR, and the Honolulu Star Bulletin. Today's guest is Peter Chee. Peter loves tackling what he likes to call “peak experiences” and has often found these experiences through entrepreneurship and endurance sport. Currently, Peter is the founder and CEO of Thinkspace. Based in the Seattle area, Thinkspace provides workspace for a community of entrepreneurs, tech startups, non-profits, and small businesses with a common affinity for passion and inspiration. Prior to Thinkspace, he launched the Entrepreneur Organization's Accelerator Program which focuses on helping startups go from $250K to reach $1M in revenue. He also had almost a 10 year stint in the tech industry in which he worked in software and database development for companies like Disney and Paul Allen's Starwave Corporation. On the endurance side of things, Peter runs just about every day as he prepares for his next marathon (of which he's done 13). He finds time to both run Thinkspace and prepare for marathons while raising three kids. In this interview, we get into Peter's time growing up in Seattle, his stint in the tech industry during the dot-com bubble and lessons learned, Thinkspace, and his endurance athletics career. We are back with a new season and new year of the Radio Juxtapoz podcast! And while we were at it, we wanted to talk to someone who was also celebrating some newness in 2021. We called up our friend Andrew Hosner, co-owner of Los Angeles-based gallery Thinkspace Projects, who recently himself opened a sprawling new space in downtown LA. But of course, the caveat: nothing is really open right now, especially in California, and Hosner is on a bit of delay of that celebration; yes, a mega group show inaugurated the space, but we are all just waiting for that moment. when we can get together and properly kick this party off. Yet, there is still so much to talk about with Andrew Hosner, who has been at the helm of Thinkspace for over 15 years now, and taken what was a small space into a major player in the New Contemporary movement (a little more on that name in the podcast) and pushing a slew of artists in the institutional conversation. His gallery continues to embody an element of Los Angeles that was a major part of the origins of Juxtapoz. And coming from the world of collecting himself before Thinkspace, he still gets excited about so many part of the process and the world he supports. In this emotional conversation, we speak to Hosner about the evolution of LA's art scene, what made it so special in the early 00's and community-building in such a competitive landscape. We talk about the gallery's stance during last summer's activist renaissance, what better steps the art world can make towards a more inclusive future. He gives artists and collector insights on making the right decisions for a sustained career, and how he hopes Thinkspace can be that bridge to museum success. The Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by FIFTH WALL TV's Doug Gillen and Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 062 was recorded via Skype from Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, January 15, 2021.

Johnny leads a diverse team of visual designers who are responsible for all online, print, event, media, mobile, environmental and collectible graphic design. Prior to 42, Johnny was part of the original team at Disney Online in 1995, designing kid-friendly Web sites as well as sites for Hollywood Records' rock and R&B artists.
