Welcome to The Reel Schmooze with ToI film reviewer Jordan Hoffman and host Amanda Borschel-Dan, where we bring you all the entertainment news and film reviews a Jew can use. We have two Jangles this week. Borschel-Dan explains how Boy George released a reggae-inspired track, titled “Od Nirkod” in Hebrew, "We Will Dance Again," on his social media accounts on Monday. The duo chews this over. Hoffman is still jazzed from a Phish show he had seen the previous night. He brings us a fascinating and statistically rare sound sample. The main feature this week is Billy Wilder's 1944 "Double Indemnity," which is considered by many -- including our very own movie maven -- as one of the best pieces of film noir to date. Wilder was born in 1906 in Sucha, Galicia, today's Poland, to a Jewish family. He moved as a boy to Vienna, eventually working as a journalist and screenwriter, and moved to Paris as the Nazis rose to power. By 1934, he had made his way to Hollywood and begun working on films. Last week, Hoffman dared Borschel-Dan to find the Jewish themes of this week's film. Set in 1938, "Double Indemnity" probes the banality of evil even as Wilder's own family was being massacred in Nazi Europe. Wilder won the first of his seven Oscars for the film, which stars Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck and the Jewish actor Edward Goldenberg Robinson (born Emanuel Goldenberg). Joe Conrad is a mechanical engineer whose passion for fly fishing has led him to a career designing some of the gear anglers rely on every day. Based out of Sage's research and development facility on Bainbridge Island, Washington, Joe specializes in fly reel design and plays a key role in bringing new products from concept to reality. Most recently, he worked on Sage's new Shift series, helping develop equipment built to perform across a wide range of fishing situations. When he's not in the shop engineering fly reels, Joe spends his time chasing fish in both fresh and saltwater, or exploring technical rock climbs, and tackling the occasional mountaineering objective. His curiosity and creativity extend well beyond the outdoors. Joe is also a musician, and a weaver - he brings the same thoughtful approach to his creative pursuits that he does to engineering. Whether he's designing gear, fishing, scaling rock faces, or creating something with his hands, Joe is driven by a love of craftsmanship, problem-solving, and adventure. The conversation explores how Laura has turned film into a deliberate, evidence-based tool for teaching team leadership and group development. In our last episode we looked at Grace Kelly, whose career was cut short by her own choice. She was given the option to be treated like a princess, or to go out and actually be an honest-to-god Princess. She chose both love and duty, since you can't really Princess and be a movie star at the same time. Fair. In today's episode, we look at a career that was cut short because the actor, who was otherwise very bright and talented, couldn't reel in his demons. River Phoenix died at the age of 23, of an overdose on Halloween night in 1993, collapsing outside a club he'd just left. The first film we'll be reviewing is the second film in his filmography, Stand By Me, directed by Rob Reiner. (Please note that Sean and I recorded this episode before Reiner's untimely death, which is why it's not addressed here.) Stand By Me is an adaptation of a Stephen King novella called The Body, and manages to improve on the original, possibly because King wasn't obviously writing for an eventual movie audience (a reason I mostly quit reading his stuff). The story follows four boys over a couple of days during the summer before they got to high school, on a journey to recover the body of someone who'd gone missing. They find the body, but they also find a lot of insights in each other. In Part 4 we'll look at Running on Empty, a film Phoenix made two years later.

Running on Empty is an interesting film by Sidney Lumet that, in our opinion, doesn't get enough love. Judd Hirsch and Christine Lahti play a married couple forced to go underground when their activist ways take an unfortunate turn and someone is accidentally killed. Now, that event took place nearly twenty years earlier, so it's mostly relevant as the setup to the film. In the present day, they have two boys: one is a tween and the other (Phoenix) is nearing the end of his high school career. Because of the parents' situation, they're forced to move frequently, take odd jobs and depend on old friends to cover for them. It's a cool take on the "sins of the fathers" argument, as their lives are having an effect on their oldest son, who is a talented musician and could conceivably miss out on getting a Juilliard education. Further complicating matters is his rapidly developing relationship with a girl at his school, played by Martha Plimpton. How does the entire family navigate these complications? COMING ATTRACTIONS: We're going to spend the next five episodes dealing with limited series, what the kids used to call miniseries. Our next episode will be the series version of Fanny and Alexander by Ingmar Bergman, which was eventually cut down into a feature-length film. We're going though all 312 minutes, though! In today's episode, Brock Johnson breaks down a daily system for growing on Instagram in about 15 minutes a day by using AI to handle everything except the filming. He starts with the reframe that anchors the whole approach — you're not an influencer, you're a business owner who posts content — and then walks through the mindset shift for what AI is actually for: multiplying the ideas already in your head rather than replacing you. Brock covers the trap of subscribing to endless new AI apps versus mastering a few tools deeply, and he lays out the prerequisites on both sides: the Instagram fundamentals (niche, optimized profile, 12 posts) and the AI stack he relies on (Claude, Poppy AI, and Metricool or another scheduler). From there Brock gets into the actual structure — a 15-minute daily skeleton prioritized around one Reel per day, responding, second posts, and stories — and reframe it as a weekly schedule of 105 minutes so you can batch record and stay efficient. He walks through his full Claude Cowork workflow for collecting inspiration, generating ideas in Poppy AI, organizing shot lists, editing with Remotion, and scheduling posts, plus how he uses Claude Code to build a custom app that pulls all your comments and messages into one place, sorts them, and drafts responses in your voice. In today's episode, Brock Johnson walks through seven trial reel ideas you can use to grow on Instagram. He starts with the basics you need to know before you post a single trial reel: you need at least 1,000 followers to access the feature, the number of trial reels you can post varies by account, and duplicates won't work — each one has to be its own piece of content. From there, Brock gets into the actual ideas, starting with the "if this reel gets me to X followers, I'll do whatever the top comment says" format and its variations, including doing the opposite of the top comment or buying whatever the top comment names. He also covers reposting your most viral reels with small edits — speeding them up or slowing them down, cropping in or out, mirroring them — along with CapCut memes, "dear algorithm, connect me with" reels, and B-roll or plain text reels featuring quotes, hot takes, one-line surprising tips, or text on a window. He finishes with two formats that lean on audience participation: the "first impression" reel, where you ask people to be honest about what's wrong with your account or guess your follower count without looking, and the "seeing if the algorithm prefers this or that" test.
