“I woke early on Saturday morning to head to Camden, and then Farringdon, to record the sounds of the River Fleet. It is one of London’s twenty ghost rivers. Ghost rivers are watercourses that once ran through the city in the open air and were later buried: culverted, paved over, built upon, redirected into pipes and drains beneath streets that no longer show any trace of them. They are still there. Still flowing. Just hidden. I’ve been thinking about them a lot recently, in light of what’s happening to this world we’re in, and the damage humans have done, building concrete structures on top of a flowing river being just one small, telling example. Despite it being 7.30am on a Saturday, you can hear a car alarm going off somewhere nearby, a reminder that this river runs beneath a city that has mostly forgotten it’s there. But then, as I lowered my recorder into the drain, the sound of the river crashed forth. A power and a trickle, so strong even in these hot summer days. I tried to listen, and to hear what it was saying.”

In this episode, we speak with artist Sarah Al-Sarraj about her new speculative audio work The Mandjet. Framed as a fictional radio phone-in and set in a near future reshaped by rising waters and contested borders, the work uses humour, satire and political tension to explore how environmental crisis transforms our relationship to land, water and community. We discuss the process of building this imagined world, the use of radio as a storytelling device, and the complex figures who inhabit it.Our conversation also explores the histories that underpin the work. Using one of the main protagonists, the leader of a radical water-autonomy movement, as a starting reference, we talk through the drainage of the English Fens and the resistance of the Fen Tigers as well as touching on contemporary debates around water privatisation, environmental justice and political dissent. This way, you find your bed, your walls, and your ceiling. You feel every shake and every glitch as bare electrical cables, peeling wallpaper, dust, dirty pans in the sink, all mounting as you write by candlelight. In January 2026, Mikey Kirkpatrick played a C every day on a flute. These are all of the Cs and their ambiences stitched together into one continuous flow. This year he will step up the chromatic scale, one month at time, playing and recording a note a day; 12 months, 12 notes. In January 2027, he will arrive at the octave of C, the same note, but different. This is part of a residency- a residency that he invented for himself. He creates every day, even if he only has two minutes spare. This note a day project has grown from this. Everything is documented on a simple substack page (http://mikeykirkpatrick.substack.com). The Residency is open to all. He writes: You are invited to be a resident artist; resident in your body, your home, your streets and parks, seas and dreams. Gather your tools, instruments and materials and begin. Mikey Kirkpatrick, based in London UK, is a flautist, singer, composer, improviser, writer and educator. He has performed on hundreds of streets and stages internationally, composed for film, stage and radio, and collaborated extensively with musicians and artists across different disciplines. He is the founding director of Alchemy at Goldsmiths University, where he is also an associate lecturer. Mikey's practice both as an artist and an educator focuses on how deeper listening and musicality can be beneficial and healing for individuals, relationships, communities, society, and the environment at large.

You can hear tinkling fragments, squeaky creaks and the sound of us taking turns to throw large blocks of ice across the frozen surface. Next to us a little boy was having fun smashing a tree branch into the pool, so we gave him the headphones and told him to make a bit of chaos…”

“For the past month I keep being woken up around 4am by (what I think is) an exuberant blackbird. Finding myself awake in the early hours, I’ve been reading about their nighttime singing on birdforum.net (which is honestly delightful). As the seasons change and the light shifts, apparently they can often be heard doing ‘midnight serenades’. Two nights ago I had my recording equipment out for an interview the next day, so when I woke up I went and stood in my flat’s stairwell, listening to the singing in my pyjamas and a big coat.”

My daughter Islien (co-director and lead actress) wrote the short story The Ancient Time piece when she was 11 years old, now she is 13….the short story was published in the compilation book ‘The glitch twisted tales' which resides in the national library, London UK. Myself and my daughter had discussed making a short film based on her story for sometime… eventually we commenced production this summer. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? Haha, well shooting only took 2 days, post production, editing, effects, score sound design took approximately 2 months. How would you describe your film in two words!? Time Reflective What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film? Well being amateur/smartphone filmmakers who produce short films on a zero budget you are always working with restrictions and limitations…..often you ‘think' big during concept/pre production but find in reality you have to work within your means….however you do tend to be more creative due to these restrictions. The major obstacle is finding the time between my full-time job and family life to shoot and complete post production is always a challenge.
