In-between appearing in Olivier Award-winning improvised musical "Showstopper!" and co-founding the "radically inclusive global movement" Sunday Assembly, Pippa Evans is a poly-performative stand-up, singer and actress. We talk about what made her character "Loretta Maine" so successful, and some of the inherent drawbacks; and we discuss her unique brand of self-confidence, the moment her jealousy overcame her, and how she dealt with the fallout... Exciting, new comedy series Stand-up and Walk continues as rock star Loretta Maine takes us on a tour of her Soho.
No Pressure to Be Funny, March 30th 2014 - in which we deliver something unique in the history of British media - an interesting, informative and very funny discussion of the EU... Joe Wells brings the long-overlooked dolphin angle of the Ukraine crisis to public attention, causing Robin Ince to lose his nice-guy-in-an-edgy-cardigan image, Alex Andreou compares Vladimir Putin enlighteningly to his cat, and Suzanne Moore lyrically eulogises Ed Miliband's 'MDMA eyes'. Pippa Evans introduces the new king of wimp-rock alongside her more famous character Loretta Maine. With the regular contributions from Alistair Barrie and Nick Revell, and hosted as usual by James O'Brien.
With guests Phill Jupitus, Andrew Maxwell, Miranda Sawyer and Wayne Deakin. Plus music from Loretta Maine. This month's podcast covers, amongst other things, the European Union, Antisemitism, Trans-Confessional Cannibalism, Toxic Vaginas, Ireland, Afghanistan, Royal Families and Abdication, and how Andrew Maxwell was enchanted by a red Squirrel. Mr Jupitus performs an uncanny impersonation of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and there is some really foul and seditious language all round. Also, please note that the first two times Mr Maxwell says 'roundabout' he actually means 'crossroads'.
No Pressure To Be Funny joins forces with Amnesty International UK for a podcast from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. James O'Brien is joined by activist and comedian Mark Thomas, Canadian stand-up Dana Alexander, America's Paul Provenza and award-winning crime author Ian Rankin. With contributions from NP2BF creators Alistair Barrie and Nick Revell, and music from Steve Gribbin, Loretta Maine (the alter ego of Pippa Evans) and Phil Nichol. Topics include Pussy Riot, Julian Assange and offensiveness in comedy.
In episode four Susan Calman chats it up with Mark Thomas about his new show and gets Tiffany Stevenson and Mark Little to confess their secrets. Phil Nichols tells us about how Fernando Torres improved his love life, Helen Arney sings about making love, ahh... and Loretta Maine performs a little ditty about little things. We really couldn't squeeze anymore in. If you have enjoyed this podcast please chip in a few quid to help support our work. Make a donation at amnesty.org.uk/chipin
James O'Brien is joined by stand-up Ian Stone; New Statesman journalist Helen Lewis; and unquestionably one of the most important and funniest British comedians ever, Alexei Sayle. Music is from rising star Loretta Maine.
