Day 1,554.Today, as Romania kicks Russian diplomats out of the country following a drone strike last night that has injured civilians in the eastern city of Galati, we ask, why is it so easy for Romania to name the perpetrator of such attacks when others still seek to avoid apportioning blame. We then look at reports Russia is continuing to be hit hard on the southern corridor, including now by drone-landed mines, followed by the second part of Francis's special dispatch from the La Biannale art festival in Venice, today looking at the decision to permit the reopening of the Russian Pavilion and his encounter with Pussy Riot. And we finish with an audio dispatch from me, after my visit to a prisoner of war camp in western Ukraine. We spoke to Judith and Tom about the enormous impact that punk has had on American culture, how the punk community has always been deeply connected to social and political activism, and the powerful lessons that punk can teach us all about how to live authentically, express your truth, and take bold steps to create a world that you want to live in.
Maria Alyokhina joined Oliver in studio to talk about her book Political Girl Political Girl: Life and Fate in Russia.
Today, Roland-Philippe Kretzschmar is joined by Nadya Tolokonnikova — conceptual artist, musician, activist, wanted criminal, and one of the founders of Pussy Riot, the Russian feminist protest-art collective formed in Moscow in 2011.Tolokonnikova spent nearly two years in a Russian prison after Pussy Riot's 2012 performance Punk Prayer inside Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour — an action that transformed a brief act of punk dissent into one of the defining works of political performance art of the 21st century. Since then, her work has continued to confront the spaces where power presents itself as untouchable: the church, the state, the prison system, the museum, the media image. That history matters in Venice. A national pavilion at the Biennale is never just architecture. It is a state speaking through culture.Last week, in May 2026, as Russia returned to the Venice Biennale for the first time since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Pussy Riot and FEMEN staged two connected protests. On May 6, they confronted the Russian Pavilion itself, using Ukrainian flags, pink balaclavas, smoke, flares, punk music, and slogans against Russia's war. The action forced the pavilion to close temporarily. On May 7, the confrontation moved from the pavilion to the institution that had allowed Russia back in. At Ca' Giustinian, the headquarters of the Biennale Foundation, Tolokonnikova and the protesters challenged the Biennale's leadership and its president, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, over the claim that culture can remain neutral while being used by the Russian state. Reuters reported that the demonstration continued from the previous day's action at the Russian Pavilion and was redirected by police to the Biennale Foundation's headquarters, where flares in the colours of Ukraine were ignited. This continuity — from the cathedral in Moscow to the pavilion in Venice, and from the pavilion to the Biennale's own leadership — sits at the centre of our conversation.Tolokonnikova's recent work has only sharpened this confrontation between art, punishment, and political theatre. Her 2023 performance and exhibition Putin's Ashes, later shown at institutions and galleries including Dallas Contemporary, turned the image of Putin into ritual material and helped place her back on Russia's wanted list. In 2025, POLICE STATE premiered at MOCA in Los Angeles as a durational performance and installation built around the architecture of confinement, before travelling to MCA Chicago later that year. Her accolades include Time Woman of the Year, the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought, the LennonOno Grant for Peace, the Woody Guthrie Prize, and an Honorary Doctorate from RISD. She also carries, as a kind of involuntary badge of honour, the Russian Federation's 2025 designation of Pussy Riot as an extremist organisation — a reminder that, in authoritarian systems, art is not treated as metaphor when it threatens power. Reuters also reported that Pussy Riot was declared an extremist organisation and banned in Russia in 2025. So this episode is about protest as art, culture as power, exile, propaganda, and the impossibility of neutrality when neutrality itself becomes a political position. Hosted on Acast.

ART IS CHANGE – Art is ResistanceWhat happens when freedom of expression is under pressure? When speech narrows, fear rises, and the future feels smaller than it should? In this episode, we explore how activist artists and cultural organizers have historically stepped into these moments—not as decoration or entertainment, but as essential agents of democratic life. Through vivid stories from different times and places, the episode reveals how cultural practice reshapes what people believe is possible. In this episode, you'll hear:How public murals in post-revolutionary Mexico helped people see themselves as part of historyHow a single performance of “Strange Fruit” forced audiences to confront racial violence they had learned to ignoreHow participatory theater in Brazil turned audiences into active agents of changeHow a one-minute protest by Pussy Riot disrupted authoritarian control and spread globallyThese stories point to a deeper truth: resistance is not only political—it is cultural, emotional, and imaginative. Zmiňuje i výroky Tomia Okamury a nejistotu, kterou podobná komunikace vytváří: „vypouštějí balónky“ a redakce pak nevědí, co bude dál. A proč podle něj chybí novinářům společný hlas? Poslechněte si celý rozhovor.

In January, Russian authorities officially labeled the anti-Kremlin activist art group Pussy Riot an "extremist organization," a move that makes even sharing their music or images a potential crime. The group's co-founder Nadya Tolokonnikova joins Piya Chattopadhyay to discuss what that designation means for dissidents both inside and outside Russia, the message she's sending with her latest work, Police State, and how art can confront authoritarian power at a moment when repression is spreading far beyond Russia.

Rachel Maddow relays the details of a new Washington Post report that Donald Trump's secretary of defense, former weekend cable news host Pete Hegseth, gave orders to kill everyone on board a boat he accused of running drugs to the United States, which meant finishing off the survivors of an initial strike that destroyed the boat — the literal textbook definition of an illegal order. Rep. Adam Smith, ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee joins to discuss a new, bipartisan push to investigate Hegseth's orders.Rachel Maddow talks with Nadya Tolokonnikova, founding member of Russian dissident activism group Pussy Riot, about what it means that the Putin administration has declared her a member of an "extremist" organization, and the parallels to Donald Trump using a similar tactic to give himself the tools for targeting people he doesn't like. The goal of political art is to ask uncomfortable questions. The price was prison.Vitaly Shevchenko speaks to Maria Alyokhina, founding member of the Russian punk activist group Pussy Riot, about the power and the price of protest.Pussy Riot came to the world's attention with its Punk Prayer, an angry anti-Putin anthem performed in a Moscow church. Maria Alyokhina spent two years incarcerated in a penal colony as a result. It was worth it, she says, to show the world what life under President Putin was like. She was freed under an amnesty ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, but her ongoing activism saw her living under surveillance and then house arrest, eventually fleeing Russia in a dramatic escape. Today, she continues to challenge Putin's regime from outside her home country. Thank you to the Ukrainecast team for its help in making this programme. How was the history of Russia made by its women through the cataclysms of revolution, war, idealism, and defeat? Join us for an engaging tour of Russia through the lives of its women. Journalist Julia Ioffe and her family fled the Soviet Union in 1990. She wouldn't return for nearly two decades, and when she did, she found a country significantly changed. The Soviet Union had tried to portray itself as being on the vanguard of world feminism; today, Russia presents itself as the last bastion of conservative Christian values. How did that happen? What happened to the women of the Soviet era, who served as doctors, engineers and scientists? How, she asks, did they get replaced with women who are just desperate to marry rich and become stay-at-home mothers? It's a topic she explores in her new book Motherland: A Feminist History of Modern Russia, from Revolution to Autocracy. From her own great grandmothers, who were physicians, to Lenin's lover, who was a feminist revolutionary, to the hundreds of thousands of young Soviet women to fought in the Second World War to the millions of single mothers who repopulated the devastated country—and onward to Pussy Riot and Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of opposition leader Alexey Navalny. Ioffe reveals the failure of the social experimentation of the Soviet era and how it paved the way for the revanchist policies of Vladimir Putin. Founding member of Pussy Riot and one of the most high-profile political activists in Russia imprisoned by Vladimir Putin's government - in this Ways to Change the World Podcast, Krishnan Guru-Murthy speaks to Masha Alyokhina. She became internationally known after the group's protest performance in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in 2012, which led to her arrest and two years in prison. Since her release, Masha has continued to challenge Putin's regime and fight for freedom of expression through her art, writing and activism.
Conceptual performance artist and activist Nadya Tolokonnikova is the creator of Pussy Riot, a global feminist art movement. She was sentenced in 2012 to 2 years' imprisonment following an anti-Putin performance Punk Prayer. Punk Prayer was named by The Guardian among the best art pieces of the 21st century. Tolokonnikova's Putin's Ashes art installation at Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in January 2023 propelled her into a new criminal case and put on Russia's most wanted criminal list. In 2024 her debut museum exhibition RAGE, opened at OK Linz, Linz, Austria, and the eponymous performance piece performed at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. In 2025, Tolokonnikova has solo shows at Honor Fraser gallery (Los Angeles), Nagel Draxler (Berlin) and MOCA (Los Angeles). She and I discuss memory, books, Environmental consciousness, young motherhood, Feminism, how to run from the police and protect yourself as an activist, equality, being a mom, survival mechanisms, freedom of thought, how criticism does not equal hate, making things better, how people are not even trying, spreading something good, how paradise is within you, radical activism, the minuscule audience for contemporary art, places of liberation, enchanted and magical art balanced with the raw, and not being dumber than AI, ideas first, thinking while walking, what's the future of creativity, solidarity, moments of gratitude, making things beautiful, and imagining the impossible!

When Nadya Tolokonnikova saw her country Russia change under President Vladimir Putin’s authoritarian regime, she knew she had to do something. She started the iconic ski-mask-wearing art protest collective Pussy Riot. On February 21st, 2012, they performed their anti-Putin protest song, Punk Prayer, in a Moscow church, launching Nadya into overnight activist fame… and a prison labour camp.
