Marie Curie won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. She's famous for her work in radioactivity. Lin-Manual Miranda is a songwriter, producer and director who won the Pulitzer Prize in Drama in 2016, as well as several Tony awards. What do they have in common? They lived a century apart. They innovated in disparate fields. But they shared a similar productivity practice. Both achieved greatness by embracing the practice of slow productivity, says Georgetown computer science professor Cal Newport. Slow productivity is a three-part practice, Newport explains: (1) do fewer things; (2) work at a natural pace; (3) obsess over quality. We're used to thinking of productivity as doing more in a short amount of time. This flips that idea on its head, focusing on doing less, but excelling. Slow productivity is the practice of doing fewer tasks better. In this episode, Newport explains how the practice of slow productivity diverges from the normal ways that people in modern society tend to work. Life can be stressful. Your to-do list might feel never-ending. This episode can help you focus on the few things that matter most. It can help you feel less stressed, less busy, and yet — paradoxically — more productive, at the same time. We're sharing this as part of GREATEST HITS WEEK, a 5-day series in which we're sharing 5 episodes, across 5 days, that originally aired at the start of 2024 (January through March). We're pressured to do a lot of things... Work hard, make money, build a huge social circle, etc.. But living under pressure means living under obligation. It means doing what you're told, instead of what you want. It means living up to the expectations of others and not abiding by your own way of life. There's no need to pressure yourself. To do anything After all, that's extra effort and extra stress. Not the lazy way at all. You gotta be able to relax, not feel pressured or otherwise compelled to do shit. Do it in your own time, if you even want to and don't hard press yourself to get it done. Take the weight off your shoulders and lie on back down in bed, man. Ain't no reason to be carrying the heavy burden of pressure when in reality, you don't gotta do a goddamn thing! You don't. You seriously do not "have to" do anything. Any pressure you feel otherwise, well, that's on you, baby. You're pressuring yourself. Give yourself freedom, man. Stop torturing yourself about doing one thing or another or reaching a certain status quo just to mildly impress someone else. Aim to be happy, not to be approved by others. Part of a new generation of bands formed over Zoom and FaceTime, Tarnish began in 2020 when guitarist/vocalist Karl Forster and bassist Dane Carlson started working on tracks despite living over 400 miles apart. The California-based group, now rounded out by drummer Jack Breger and guitarist Natty P, comes from a diverse musical background with influences all over the genre spectrum, but with a shared love for the 2010s pop punk/emo sound. With introspective lyrics and hard-hitting riffs, Tarnish has been working to craft a signature sound that stands out from the crowd.Recorded with Ben Hirschfield (The Story So Far, Mom Jeans., No Pressure), their most recent single, “Feeling The Same,” explores new territory for the band, experimenting with time signatures and song structure. Coming off the success of the poppier, yet similarly intense, “Cold Walks to the Liquor Store” in July, the juxtaposition between these singles showcases the band's range as they gear up for the release of their next EP. The band continues to build off their success in their respective Sacramento and San Diego local scenes, and has had the privilege of performing in venues such as the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco and the Observatory in Santa Ana. Actively seeking new ways to expand their audience, Tarnish is eager to grow as artists and performers, while still maintaining the sincerity of their work. Thanks for listening!!! Cutting edge technology vs technically cutting edges... Nick and J talked about mixing and mastering vinyl records, Atmos vs Sony 260AR, how to listen to immersive audio, mixing for Halloween, old school vs modern low-end, and how to rescue a snare. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guests today are Nick Townsend and J Clark joining us from Infrasonic West in Los Angeles. Nick Townsend's musical prowess is rooted in the punk rock scene. He began drumming for punk bands at the age of 16, and has been playing professionally ever since. His trained ears, and passion for music production, is owed to recording bands in his grandmother's garage. He attended the Audio Engineering School at Citrus College in Glendora, CA. He then landed his first audio job with Infrasonic Mastering in 2012 where he assisted Pete Lyman, while simultaneously learning the craft of vinyl mastering and lacquer cutting. Soon thereafter, he started his own Townsend Mastering until 2021 when he rejoined Infrasonic Los Angeles. Nick has mastered records for The Egyptian Lover, Militarie Gun, No Pressure, Fleshwater, Spanish Love Songs and many more, and specializes in vinyl mastering and lacquer cutting of over 2,000 vinyl records including artists such as Cheap Trick, Paramore, Weezer, Iron Maiden, Bad Religion, Garbage, Dr. Dre, 2pac, Grimes and more. His work can be identified by the hand scribed “NT” found on the lock groove of each vinyl. J Clark is an engineer, mixer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist based in Los Angeles, CA. He spent the majority of the late 90's and 2000's playing and touring in the bands Pretty Girls Make Graves, Killsadie, Jaguar Love, and Sharks Keep Moving. After moving to Los Angeles in 2010, he began composing music for ads and movies before expanding into post production; Re-Recording mixing, Sound Design, and Dialogue editing for film and television. In late 2020 he began mixing and mastering music in Dolby Atmos and Sony 360RA. His spatial credits include artists such as Jennifer Lopez, MK, The Hold Steady, Nelly, Nicky Jam, Marc Anthony, and many others. J's studio was designed and built in collaboration with PMC Loudspeakers, Dolby Laboratories, and Sony Home Entertainment and boasts an impressive 24 speakers! It's built to handle the present and future of multichannel sound for music, picture and gaming offering an 11.1.6 ATMOS and a 13.1 Sony360 array for the most precise playback and detail of your immersive projects.
