Tom Sutcliffe talks to director Ridley Scott about his new film Napoleon - a subject that takes him back to an actor who's played an emperor for him before – Joaquin Phoenix was Commodus in Gladiator – and back to the period in which his very first film. The Duellists was set. A fifth of the seats at the Royal Albert Hall are owned by just over 300 people - who can choose to enjoy performances or sell the tickets on at a profit. We hear from Richard Lyttelton, a former President of the Royal Albert Hall who believes that making money out of the seats doesn't really align with the original vision of the venue. A Gloucester Old Spot pig has been named The Satsuma Complex - in honour of comedian Bob Mortimer's first book, which has won this year's Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse prize for the best comic novel. He's joined by fellow comedian and member of the judging panel Pippa Evans to explore what makes fiction funny.
Improv Your Life is one of the top 3 coaching books we recommend because it gets into not knowing - and it's SIMPLE. Pippa Evans has done something huge for the coaching profession without knowing it. We talk about offering something to another person to do with what they will; being in relation to another without losing yourself. And don't judge a scene until it's finished - or you have checked out before the end. A great resource for coaches. And you will make your own meaning from what you hear. We spend a lot of time feeling very serious about seeking meaning in our lives; but is it possible that the secret lies in making the search more fun? Can we say a creative, mutually affirming “yes” more often? And when do we need a self-protective “no”? This week Andrew and improv comedy star Pippa Evans have lots of fun together as they compare the strategies of improvisational comedy with those of therapy. Perhaps the most interesting lesson from improv: “be in the moment that is, not the one you thought would come along”. Pippa Evans is a comedian and writer known for her skills in improvisational comedy. She was a core member of the improv team behind the award-winning stage show Showstopper: The Improvised Musical which toured the UK and abroad, and has regularly appeared on BBC radio. Pippa likes to “use jokes to find connection”, and teaches courses on improvisation and the ways it can help improve our relationships with ourselves and with others. She has recently written a book called Improv Your Life: An Improviser's Guide To Working With Whatever Life Throws At You. Among her many other accomplishments, Pippa is also the co-founder of the Sunday Assembly, a church for non-believers. In this episode listeners learn the art of good conversation and relationship building from the principles of ‘improv' (improvisation). What is ‘accept and build', and how can the technique be used by all of us? Pippa Evans and Steve Weiner discuss what listening really means, and how you can focus on the other person in your conversation whilst keeping the ebb and flow of a joint discussion. Every key conversation should raise questions in your mind; what is my purpose, what is the other person's purpose and what is the purpose of the relationship? The particular challenges of managing conversations with people who are more senior is explored, as well as what Steve means by the ‘cake' and the ‘icing'! We always encourage listeners to undertake practical actions after listening to the episode. - Practice listening. And we mean, really listening. Perhaps choose a conversation and use the techniques discussed in the episode. How did you find it?- Watch some improvisation. We usually think of ‘improv' as purely comedy, but there are lots of different environments where the techniques are used (tv, theatre etc.) Can you see the techniques when watching? And which of them could you bring into situations in your current environment (work, college, school)? - Before a next project meeting you are attending, whether at university or in the office, try ‘contracting' with your senior colleague leading it: “What will my role be?”, or “I was thinking of leading this part of the discussion, how do you think I can best contribute?” Useful resources- Steve Weiner's website: https://www.swlearning.co.uk/- Pippa Evan's website: http://www.pippaevans.com/- Read the book ‘Quiet' by Susan Cain- The power of introverts by Susan Cain (Ted Talks) https://www.ted.com/talks/susan_cain_the_power_of_introverts- Watch Pippa's talk on Talks at Google: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNq71AjQZLc
Podcasts are often just a couple of people making it all up as they go along, so it seems appropriate that the first 21st Film that falls under the improvised comedy umbrella, directed by Christopher Guest, perhaps the greatest auteur of the entire genre, sees Lorcan (@lorcanmullan) joined by Pippa Evans (@IAmPippaEvans). Evans is part of the Olivier Award-winning improv troupe Showstopper and has a CV of improvisation experience, from performing to teaching, on stage and screen, that is second to none. Her new book 'Improv Your Life', is available in all book outlets and you should get it as soon as you've listened to this episode.

An improviser's guide to embracing whatever life throws at you! PIPPA EVANS is an expert in saying Yes - and No. She's a master of thinking on her feet, but has also had to learn how to go with the flow. In this book she's passing on everything she's learnt from her award winning improv career, as both a performer and teacher, so YOU can take centre stage in your own life. In telling her story, delving into the craft of improvisation, and sharing fun exercises and practice you can do at home, Pippa will help you become fully yourself - realising your potential and ability to adapt to the ever changing world around you. It's dangerous, being yourself, but let's just take it one step at a time. Open the book, take a breath and get ready to say YES. (If it's a NO from you then perhaps consider buying for a friend, family member or enemy who you think needs some improv-ment)

RHLSTP #176: Pippa Evans - Half an Orange. I mean there is so much of last week's podcast still to unpack, plus the extra 20 minutes that Rich and this week's guest - improviser and inspirational human being Pippa Evans - got in the dressing room. We had been Blessed. Thankfully we had at least had a week to recover. It's a somewhat calmer podcast, with some questions in it and a couple of words from the host, including some dark suggestions for new Muppet movies, Neil Buchanan's dental hygiene, unusual prophylactics, how improv got cool, Sunday services for the non-religious, rocking with Baptists, getting career goals in perspective, the wonders of Music Hall and basing characters on your 17 year-old self. I mean, she's no Brian Blessed, but thank God for that.SUPPORT THE SHOW!Check out our website and become a badger and see extra content http://rhlstp.co.ukSee details of the RHLSTP tour dates http://richardherring.com/gigsBuy DVDs and Books at http://gofasterstripe.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In the second episode of The Sacred, Elizabeth talks to comedian, writer and founder of the Sunday Assembly, Pippa Evans. Pippa is a regular on BBC radio 4 and has written and presented series for other broadcasters and networks. She also helped found the Sunday Assembly, which had been dubbed the "atheist church" on its inception. The organisation has grown to become a global movement for people who value faith and spirituality, in spite of not identifying as 'religious'. This episode also features an interview with Theos researcher Simon Perfect, on his project about free speech and university campuses. The Sacred is a podcast about the things we cherish and hold dear to us. It is supported by Theos, the religion and society think tank, and is produced by Hussein Kesvani and No Country media.

Cass and Dr. Bob talk with Brynda Quinn, a local Psychologist here in middle Tennessee. We met at the Nashville Sunday Assembly where she spoke on the same Sunday that Bob and Cass spoke. She doesn’t have a strong religious back story, but Christianity doesn’t have a corner on causing shame. Brynda’s story involves a chaotic dysfunctional family, a stint in Saudi Arabia, and her personal pursuit of perfection and the toll that takes on the human experience. This episode is our nod to the benefits of psychology. We play an excerpt from a TED talk given by a Psychologist who has greatly influenced Brynda: Kristin Neff. Neff is an associate professor in the University of Texas at Austin's department of educational psychology. She created the Self-compassion Scales. She has been credited with conducting the first academic studies into self-compassion. Brynda is a big proponent of Sunday Assembly, the atheist “church” started by Sanderson Jones and Pippa Evans in 2013 in London. Wikipedia describes it as a gathering mostly for non-religious people who want a similar communal experience to a religious church, though religious people are also welcome. We taped this talk on Nov. 14th, 2015. Subscribe to our podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, TuneIn and most podcast platforms. We at Nomad recently had a revelation, perhaps we can learn from non-Christians as well as Christians. So we headed down to London and visited the Sunday Assembly, or The Atheist Church as it's become known. After 'worshipping' with 300 atheists, we chat with Pippa Evans one of the founders of what's becoming a global movement, and try to figure out what the Church can learn from the friendlier face of new atheism. If you want more from Nomad, check out our website, and follow us on Facebook and twitter If you're looking for other people to share this journey with, then register on our Listener Map, and see if any other nomads are in your area.
