The quest for Dark Matter just got interesting. Researchers on an international project called the Lux-Zeplin (LZ) Dark Matter Experiment reported they may have discovered the signature of a bit of Dark Matter passing through an underground mine in South Dakota. Kimberly Palladino, professor of physics at Oxford and a member of that LZ collaboration, speaks with Roland to explain how dark matter is being detected. Probiotics have long been all the rage in health advice, but this week we discovered they may also be good for corals. Microbiologist turned ecologist Erika Santoro has been testing a probiotic treatment on reefs in the Red Sea and joins us to divulge her findings. We're continuing with a tone of optimism with this week's shortlisted book for the Royal Society's coveted Trivedi Science Book Prize. ‘Despite it All: A Handbook for Climate Hopefuls' by veteran environmental journalist Fred Pearce, focuses on the progress humanity has made in protecting the planet. Plus, mathematician Kit Yates is back, bringing us some of the week's most exciting science news, including how we might use the earth's magnetic field to authenticate artefacts and a puzzling ten-sided cloud structure on Saturn's south pole. What does it feel like, in our bodies, to be in a Marxist reading group or an anarchist direct action collective? What unexamined stories, from our profoundly traumatizing experiences of development, do we carry into political organizing structures? What relational patterns do we experience in situations ranging from families to graduate school that we then repeat, using new language and frames of reference, when we try to save the world? What does it mean to be a revolutionary, in terms of the core relational and perceptual shifts we wish to effect in ourselves and others? Do political groups kinda resemble cults sometimes? In this episode, Arnold and Adam speak about their highly overlapping experiences of political engagement and philosophical reflection. Adam, a psychotherapist and social worker with an extensive background in Marxist theory and practice, is the host of the Subjective Conditions podcast, which returns from hiatus this fall, focusing on “the mind and the body under capitalism.” His other projects include the Red Library podcast, the Capillaries theory blog, and a forthcoming book called Saturn's Maw, draft chapters of which are spread between Capillaries and his psychotherapy website.

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we revisit our 2017 series on 1999's Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. We're interviewing Riley Cooper, a former colleague of Tim's who had a long career at Crystal Dynamics and worked on the title in level design and combat design roles. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Podcast breakdown: 1:01 Interview 1:07:10 Break 1:07:40 Outro Issues covered: the Universe coming together, getting in, making terrain layers in Photoshop, moving to the next thing, working on the combat, the parts that had to be there, incorporating lateral movement for combat, applying fighting game discipline, not inventing from whole cloth, rebuilding a camera system, design as open source, defensive patents, jamming so much into levels, spectral morphing and lack of follow-ups, blind ambition coming from Amy Hennig, being two weeks from ship for one to two years, time to market vs time to quality, people simply not knowing, jumping between genres, the victory of European labor laws, knowing how to build what you're building, a vacuum of upper management, being able to just make the game, the tension between business and creation, wanting to design without interference, execs who want to play with the toys, "problems down solutions up," wanting appropriate ownership at every level, getting the same letter at the end of two different projects, the feeling at the start vs the feeling in the middle, thoughtful refactoring, starting from the right constraints, locking yourself in a room with a design problem to find the solution, gameplay goes at the speed of thumbs, a sports game that's a video game first, good places to be from. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Lord of the Rings, LucasArts, Solar Eclipse, Legacy of Kain (series), Tomb Raider (series), EA, Need for Speed (series), Sony, Atari 2600, Dave Morse, 3D0, Saturn, Noah Hughes, Amy Hennig, Silicon Knights, Denis Dyack, Seth Carus, Street Fighter 2, Super Mario 64, Jim Conrad, Andrew Hynek, Roberta Williams, Daniel Chayer-Bison, Pete Lake, Microsoft, X-COM, Fallout, Populous, Sean Vesce, Richard Lemarchand, Naughty Dog, Uncharted, Hitman, Hakan Almer, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. In this episode, Britten introduces her next Mystics Making Money teaching, The Syllabus Is the Chrysalis. She explores the syllabus as a magical structure that can hold a learning and experiential journey, bringing the expansive and the imaginal into elegant containment so that transformation can happen. Topics She Covers: The heart of Mystics Making Money and what it means to bring your magical craft, intuitive gifts, creative service, and leadership into the marketplace. Jupiter and Saturn as a helpful conversation between expansion and structure, and what happens when we bring those two principles together. The syllabus as the chrysalis for transformation, including the imaginal cells, resistance, and the process of letting parts of who you've been fall away so something new can emerge. The syllabus as both an itinerary through time and a structure for the space itself: the boundaries, agreements, expectations, and "rules of the game" that help hold an experience. Bringing the expansive into elegant containment, and how a strong container allows the participant to have their transformation without the guide getting in the way. Creating beautiful systems that organize your genius, support scaling, and allow your work to keep moving through the world even when you are not actively delivering it. Britten explores the possibility of maximum expansiveness and maximum structure at the same time, without either one diminishing the magic. For her, this is the playground: creating experiences that are fun, transformational, and deeply impactful. Learn More: Britten invites listeners to join her in the sixth installment of Mystics Making Money: The Syllabus Is The Chrysalis starting September 11. I'll be teaching you exactly how I architect spaces that serve exponentially more people and bring me exponentially more revenue. Creating courses takes you out of one-on-one contracts and into something way more expansive and experiential. The increase in revenue gives you the freedom to dream and create even more. To rest. And to nurture what most matters to you. A syllabus is more than a list of what will be covered. It's the dream in built form. You build it, the community comes! After spending eight years in the sign Aries, on June 19 Chiron finally dipped its toes into Taurus – but it will only be there for about twelve weeks before returning to Aries on September 17. We'll have to wait until mid-April 2027 before Chiron settles in for its seven year passage through the sign of the Bull. It first touches Gemini in July 2033, but soon returns to Taurus, and only arrives solidly in Gemini on May 5, 2034. Chiron's journeys through Aries and Taurus are long ones, especially when we remember that its total orbit only takes a little under fifty-one years. Divide that number by twelve, and you get an average duration of its passage though each sign of about four years. One key to understanding why it spends so much time in Aries and Taurus is to remember that this planetoid's orbit is highly elliptical. Its motion is slowest when it's in Aries. By the time it gets into Libra, it's halfway around the zodiac. That puts it a lot closer to the Sun and the increased gravitational pull zooms it along a lot more quickly. There's a second complicating factor: compared to the “real” planets, Chiron's mass is low and so it gets kicked around a lot by their gravity. That's why when you Google “Chiron's orbital period,” you don't get the kind of precision we're accustomed to seeing with, for example, Mars (686.98 earth days.) Some sources give Chiron an orbital period of 50.7 years, while others say 50.45 years. That's because of gravitational interference, mostly by massive Jupiter and Saturn. Sometimes Chiron is closer to them and it's pulled harder, other times it's further away and they're less of an influence, so it all becomes a tangle of ever-changing variables. One practical takeaway is that while we take Chiron seriously, we should never confuse it with the major planets. Chiron would fit between New York and Boston or just about cover the Shanghai-Hangzhou metroplex in China. Even relatively tiny Pluto – the smallest of the real astrological planets – is about twelve times Chiron's diameter. So, cutting to the heart of the matter, what can we expect from Chiron's passage through Taurus?
Text the Show⭐️ Affiliate item of the week: Saturn Siege: A Mars Ranger Corps Novel. Saturn was supposed to be quiet. After years of war, Staff Sergeant Marcus “Torch” Keen and the Rangers of Check Fire are assigned to Saturn Early Warning Station—a vast, undermanned outpost hanging in the shadow of the rings. Show Notes How to Use AI Without the Internet Turning on You | Laine White of Uptick Marketing AI can save your small business a lot of time. It can also get you dragged into your own comment section. This week Carrie Rollwagen sits down with Laine White, Head of Client Strategy at Uptick Marketing, to figure out where the line actually is. Laine uses AI every day, and she still has real ethical concerns about it, which is exactly why she is the right person to ask. Her rule is simple: use AI to plan, strategize, organize, and analyze. If you are using it to make the content people actually see, either make sure nobody can tell, or be ready for the fallout. We get into why people come for small businesses harder than they come for big corporations, how one angry comment thread turns into a Reddit thread and then into what your neighbor thinks about your business, and what 'burstiness' has to do with why AI captions read as bland. Laine breaks down what captions actually need on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and TikTok, why she does not want you generating images at all right now, how a brand kit makes AI design look less like AI, and why ChatGPT keeps quietly editing your photos and giving you away. She also answers the question every business owner is afraid to ask: you already posted the AI thing, people are mad, now what? Laine walks through what to say, what not to say, and why saying nothing is the worst option you have. _______________________________________ Mentioned in This Episode Uptick Marketing Infomedia Uncle G's Pizza Uncle G's Pizza on Instagram Saturn Birmingham Cala Coffee Cember Studio Hattie O'Hara on Instagram The Localist episode with Hattie O'Hara Laine's first Localist episode: A Practical Guide to Influencer Marketing DJI Osmo Pocket 3 Creator Combo The Birmingham subreddit Connect with Laine White Laine White is Head of Client Strategy at Uptick Marketing, the sister company of Infomedia. Here’s the shape of September, in one sentence: it’s a month of turning inward while the world asks you to engage outward. There’s a cluster of retrograde planets active pretty much all month — Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto are already retrograde, and partway through the month, Uranus joins them. Four planets moving backward, astrologically, at the same time. For an empath, this actually can be a relief, if you let it. So much of what exhausts us is the forward momentum of the world — the constant doing, deciding, producing, responding. A month with this many retrogrades is a month where the cosmic permission slip says: it’s okay to slow down. It’s okay to revisit. It’s okay to not have the answer yet. But — and here’s the nuance — the inner planets, the fast-moving personal ones: the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Mars, are all direct and quite active this month. So you’re going to feel this tug-of-war: parts of you wanting to reflect, rest, and go inward, while other parts of your life — conversations, relationships, decisions — are moving forward whether you’re ready or not. If you take one thing from this whole episode, let it be this: you’re allowed to let your inner world move at retrograde speed even while your outer world moves at direct speed!

Episode 298In this podcast, New York Times best-selling author and astrologer Chani Nicholas discusses the astrology of the week and what it might mean for us all.The astrology of the week of August 31st, 2026, brings both obstacles and opportunities. When Jupiter (the planet of good fortune) trines Saturn (the planet of structure), it feels like all our hard work is finally paying off and we're being blessed with the growth and abundance that we've cleared space for. But when Mars (the planet of action) squares Saturn, it's a whole different story. This face-off is sure to spark serious frustration and stuck-in-the-mud energy. Thankfully, Mercury (the planet of communication) also makes a supportive sextile to Mars, encouraging conversations that break the tension and clarify where we need to move next. Now's the time to tune in to your intuition and trust your gut. Those instincts will not only help you stay true to yourself, but they'll come in handy when your plans get off track. This episode covers:Jupiter's trine to Saturn on Monday, August 31stMars' square to Saturn on Tuesday, September 1stMercury's sextile to Mars on Tuesday, September 1stThis episode was recorded on 8/5/2026.For more, check out your free daily horoscope on the homepage of the CHANI app — now on iOS and Android.Have you heard? This week, Mars is in conflict with, and Jupiter makes a soothing aspect to, serious Saturn. Mental faculties and manual skills get a supercharged boost with the sextile between Mercury and Mars, and the Gemini Last Quarter Moon manages to express the ideas that the Virgo Sun has given a lot of detailed thought. We have a pretty busy week at the Big Sky HQ as April gets ready for a conference and the Podathon, which starts next week, so we will keep things relatively brief and put off a listener question until after the Podathon! Plus: Raising the bar, an invisible super power, and default crankiness! Read a full transcript of this episode. Have a question you'd like answered on the show? Email April or leave it here! Subscribe to April's mailing list and get a free lunar workbook at each New Moon! Love the show? Make a donation! Timestamps [1:34] Jupiter trines Saturn (Aug. 31, 3:17 pm PDT) at 13°41' Leo and Aries. This is the first of three trines that they will make. The other two will come on Apr. 3 and Jul. 11, 2027. Jupiter's Sabian symbol is 14 Leo: The human soul awaiting opportunity for expression. Saturn is on 14 Aries: A serpent coiling near a man and a woman. This aspect balances Jupiter's expansive optimism with Saturn's realistic restraint. Ideal for goals requiring both ambition and discipline. [4:28] Mars squares Saturn (Sep. 1, 2:59 am PDT) at 13°39' Cancer and Aries. Mars' Sabian symbol is 14 Cancer: A very old man facing a vast dark space to the northeast. Treat this transit as a lesson in how to impose more control and discipline over your temper, impulsiveness, and physical drives. [7:51] Mercury sextiles Mars (Sep. 1, 6:21 am PDT) at 13°44' Virgo and Cancer. Mercury is on the Sabian symbol 14 Virgo, A family tree. Be mindful of your words. Great transit for projects that require being good with your hands and having attention to detail. [9:43] Moon Report! The Gemini Last Quarter Moon (Sep. 4, 12:51 am PDT) at 11°48' Gemini and Virgo. This Last Quarter wraps up that New Moon solar eclipse in Leo (Aug. 12, 2026). Consider letting go of the sadness and regret that this eclipse season may have brought. [12:39] This is the Last Quarter phase (last action phase) in a lunar phase family cycle that began with a New Moon on Jun. 6, 2024 (16°17' Gemini). The First Quarter (first action phase) was on Mar. 6, 2025 (16°21' Gemini). The Full Moon (awareness point) occurred on Dec. 4, 2025 (13°3' Gemini). [14:29] Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon periods. The Moon in Aries opposes Venus in Libra (Aug. 31, 12:47 pm PDT). It's VOC then for 12 hours, 14 minutes before it enters Taurus (Sep. 1, 1:01 am PDT). Use this VOC Moon to get in the habit of balancing your desires with somebody else's needs, so that a happy compromise can be reached. [15:57] The Moon in Taurus trines Mercury in Virgo (Sep. 2, 3:47 am PDT). It's VOC for 1 day, 1 hour before it enters Gemini (Sep. 3, 4:47 am PDT). This is a great VOC Moon period to get to the root of an unhealthy habit or issue, so that healing and recovery can take place. [16:57] The Moon in Gemini trines Venus in Libra (Sep. 5, 1:40 am PDT). It's VOC for 5 hours, 50 minutes, and then enters Cancer (7:30 am PDT). Use this VOC Moon to get in the habit of connecting with your neighbors during communal events. Sitting On Saturn joins Caught on the Mike for a conversation about friendship, evolution, life on the road, and a band entering one of the most exciting chapters of its career.Hoyt Yeatman, Kyle Hart and Trevor Smith take us all the way back to the beginning — meeting as kids at Rock Nation, discovering their shared passion for music, forming a band, and eventually cutting their teeth in the San Diego scene. We talk about the early days, the evolution from Sitting On Stacy to Sitting On Saturn, and the experiences that helped take them from local shows and house parties to some seriously big stages. From there, we jump into what's happening right now. The guys talk about their recent run of shows, including sharing stages with 311, Dirty Heads and Ocean Alley, as well as the completely unique experience of performing with the Savannah Bananas at Petco Park. We get into what makes those shows different, how their live performance has evolved, and what it's like watching the opportunities continue to get bigger. And then there's the music.Their latest single, “Deeper Blue,” is out now, with two more singles scheduled to arrive later this year. We talk about the direction they're heading creatively, what fans can expect from those upcoming releases, and the band's next full-length record, tentatively scheduled for February. It's a conversation about three longtime friends who have grown up together, built a band together, and are still pushing themselves to see how far they can take it.www.caughtonthemike.comcaughtonthemike@gmail.com

Laurie also introduces the upcoming 2027 Prepared planner and workbook, explains how the different Awake Space membership levels are evolving, and shares updates on Healing the Money Wound, coming May 6, 2027.Then it is time to separate fear from fact. Send us Fan MailThis one opens with Robby running late because salami and cheese cubes got in the way, which is honestly hard to argue with. From there, we get into work drama at the bar, tip culture in the States, why servers making two-something an hour makes no sense, and Robby's idea of washing dishes just to fund wings and beer. We also talk remote jobs, paying off debt, the Slingshot versus the EcoSport, planning a future UK visit, Texas heat, actual UK rain, thunderstorm appreciation, and random facts that somehow end with Saturn floating in water, an eight-mile-an-hour speeding ticket, and fax machines existing before telephones. A DAY is coming when fallen angels and evil rulers throughout the centuries will regret their decisions to rebel against God. The chapters we read from the book of 1 Enoch prophesy a time when kings and the mighty plead for a respite from their torment so they might come before the throne and worship God. Sadly, their opportunity to repent has passed. Likewise, punishment for the fallen Watchers has been decreed and is being carried out with no hope of reprieve—at least not until the abyss opens up in Revelation 9 and they're given five months to torment those without the seal of God on their foreheads. These chapters come from the section of 1 Enoch called the Book of Parables. As we've discussed over previous months, chapters 37 to 71 of 1 Enoch was completed just about the time Jesus was born. It's important because it tells of a messianic character called the Son of Man who would execute these judgments. It's the first mention of the Son of Man in any Jewish writing—and 30 years later, Jesus applied that title to himself. We also read a couple chapters dealing with Noah. We point out a couple verses that disqualify 1 Enoch as scripture—for example, Noah apparently praying to his great-grandfather Enoch. If you look carefully at pictures of Saturn, you’ll probably notice something odd about the planet – it looks mashed down, like a beachball that a child is sitting on. The planet is more than 7,000 miles wider through the equator than the poles – only a bit less than the total diameter of Earth. That makes it the “flattest” planet in the solar system. Saturn is the Sun’s second-largest planet, after Jupiter – more than nine times the size of Earth. But it’s much less dense than any other planet. It’s a big ball of hydrogen and helium – the two lightest elements – wrapped around a messy core of rock and metal. Despite its size, Saturn spins in a hurry – its day is less than half as long as a day on Earth. That high-speed rotation pushes material outward at the equator – giving Saturn that “squashed” appearance. That shape affects the planet’s gravity. Saturn’s poles are much closer to the center of the planet than the equator is. And anything at the equator is being pushed outward by the high-speed rotation. The combination means that you’d weigh about a third more at the poles than at the equator – perhaps making you feel more squashed on this giant but squashed planet. Look for Saturn close to the lower right of the Moon as they climb into good view, in mid-evening. It looks like a bright golden star. Tomorrow: famous women on the planet Venus. Script by Damond Benningfield
This week, the post-eclipse dust settles into more structured, deliberate Virgo energy. August closes, and September opens with two powerful back-to-back transits. Monday: Jupiter in Leo trines Saturn in Aries, meaning we get to close the month with one of the most genuinely supportive and expansive transits of August. (We deserve it after the eclipse season madness) Then Mars in Cancer squares Saturn in Aries and friction arrives that asks us to review what it is that we may have been rushing toward. The week brings a powerful green light and a reality check in the first 48 hours. How we navigate both sets the tone for the rest of the month. We also celebrate the craft and intention of Virgo season with Founder of Violet Flame Choclates, Katrina Markoff. After redefining luxury confections through her first brand Vosges Haut-Chocolat with global spices and cultural reverence, Markoff turned inward to create Violet Flame: a deeper concentration of craft and consciousness. --- Violet Flame Chocolate: https://violetflamechocolate.com https://www.instagram.com/violetflamechocolate --- All Things Cardsy B www.cardsyb.com www.instagram.com/CardsyB Last Days of Eclipse Sale: https://www.cardsyb.com/private-sessions The "We made it through Eclipse Season sale" 30% off any reading with checkout codeIMADEIT *can be used for any future date but must be purchased by Aug 31

Vision Finds Its StructureThe eclipse portal has closed. Integration is underway. This week is quieter in its archetypal signature, fewer major contacts, more spacious rhythm. Exactly what eclipse integration requires. But quieter does not mean insignificant. Monday opens with Jupiter trining Saturn, the cycle named on the horizon last week. And Tuesday brings Mars in Cancer into an honest reckoning with Saturn. After that the week opens into genuine spaciousness.Key Cycles This Week:Monday, August 31: Jupiter in Leo trines Saturn in Aries. To understand what this trine carries, the larger context matters.Jupiter and Saturn are the social planets — describing how transpersonal movements find expression in institutions, cultural narratives, and shared collective agreements. They meet in conjunction every twenty years, and their conjunctions cluster in the same element for roughly two hundred years before shifting. The two-hundred-year earth era, roughly 1800 to 2000, seeded the industrial revolution and the organization of collective life around physical resource and material production. Its shadow is what the current Chiron in Taurus cycle is being asked to heal.In 1980, Jupiter and Saturn met in Libra, an air sign, for the first time, a foreshadowing of the coming shift. Then on the Winter Solstice of 2020 they met at 0 degrees of Aquarius, confirming the arrival of a new two-hundred-year air era. Mind, communication, relationship, and the invisible infrastructures of shared meaning are now the organizing domain. The AI revolution, the fracturing and reformation of how reality is constructed, the question of genuine collective intelligence — these are the opening expressions of that era.Jupiter trine Saturn today is a harmonious moment within the twenty-year cycle seeded in 2020. Vision and structure finding each other with ease. What Jupiter in Leo has been amplifying — creative gifts, authentic visibility, generous offering in service of something larger — now finds the structural ground that allows it to become more than aspiration.Watch in the broader field for genuine vision finding real-world form. And personally, where is what you have been envisioning ready to find more committed honest structure?Tuesday, September 1: Mars in Cancer squares Saturn in Aries. Mercury in Virgo sextiles Mars in Cancer. Mars in Cancer's instinctual protective force meets Saturn's unsentimental reality principle in friction. The tension between what the feeling body knows needs protecting and what is actually sustainable or feasible right now. Not a suppression of the protective impulse, but a call for strategic honesty. What can you actually do, with genuine resources you have, that serves what most needs protecting?Mercury sextiling Mars offers useful counterbalance, the discerning mind in easy flow with your feeling body. Thought and feeling in conversation. A good day for honest strategic thinking about what matters most and what genuine action actually looks like. The Rest of the Week: Genuine spaciousness. No major contacts. Eclipse integration does not happen through analysis or effort. It happens through the body's slower deeper process, through dreams, through what surfaces in quiet moments, through unexpected conversations that open something waiting. Let the spaciousness be what it is.Larger FrameJupiter trine Saturn sits at the intersection of the twenty-year and two-hundred-year cycles, while all three transpersonal cycles remain activated in the background. The choices being made right now — in how we communicate, what we build, what we protect, what we offer in service of something larger — are not small choices. They are being made at a genuine hinge point in the longer story.Jupiter trine Saturn asks that those choices be made with both vision and honest structure. With both the generosity of the open heart and the reality-tested commitment of genuine form.Reflection QuestionsAs Jupiter trines Saturn, what vision that has been forming is ready to find more honest committed structural form?Where is Mars in Cancer's protective instinct being activated, and what does strategic resource-grounded action in service of what most needs protecting actually look like?In the spaciousness of this integration week, what is your body processing that the mind has not yet caught up with?Podcast Poem: The Dream by Rosemerry Whatola TrommerThe Alchemize the Old taster workshop replay is available as a free resource — an experiential introduction to the transformative pattern-breaking work of the Fire elemental spiral. You can find it at my Home page, ontheedgesofchange.com. under What's Open Now. The most expensive mistake you can make coming off a bank holiday is deciding that a task taking three times longer than planned means you are bad at the work. Almost always, it means the task was under-resourced before you ever opened your laptop. In this episode of the CEO Brief, we walk through the first block of September: The Clean Up. As Venus enters shadow and Mars squares Saturn on the first working day of the month, your one job across these seven days is simple: isolate the commitments eating your time and complete your Capacity Audit Sheet before Saturday. What We Cover in This Episode: The Bank Holiday Trap: Why jumping straight into client emails on Monday creates an un-costed boundary leak you will defend until November. Mars Square Saturn (Tuesday 1 Sept): How to respond when you hit the operational wall without resorting to martyr energy or sheer willpower. The 25-Hour Void Window (Wed 2 & Thu 3 Sept): How to leverage the quietest stretch of the month to audit your true delivery hours vs. your quoted rates. The Retainer Arithmetic: A step-by-step example showing how an £800/month project can drop from £100/hr to £42/hr when untracked voice notes and quick check-ins creep in. The Friday Cut (Last Quarter Moon in Gemini): Identifying the two live commitments eating your business capacity and clearing your desk. Domestic Guardrails: Keeping Moon conjunct Mars off the Sunday dinner table. This episode is packed with your best economic ideas from around the world and a penguin interview. It all comes together in this final session of Summer School 2026.Pack your parka, we're headed to Antarctica. The continent nobody owns, but everyone benefits from and plenty of economic activity if you know where to look.First, we'll travel back in time to the late 1970s when NPR was a scrappy young network, with a synth soundtrack, and tons of heart. Science reporter Ira Flatow took a trip to the South Pole that put NPR on the news industry map. We'll hear an excerpt where he brings us along through what life is like on the ice, including a memorable interview with the wildlife. Then we look inside McMurdo Station, the largest human settlement and research base on Antarctica to hear from a listener who managed the store at the base back in the 1980s. Normal retail rules do not apply. We'll also speak with an economist who has estimated the continent's monetary value, while asking questions like “why put a price tag on this uninhabitable land”? She makes the case we should consider the environmental benefit as a service. But, we can't let the episode and the series wrap without marking our achievements! You did it! As part of our graduation celebration, we hear from your fellow members of the summer school class of 2026. Listeners like you who have written in from around the globe with provocative economic ideas that could make life better for all of us if we just have the will to do it. Man did you all deliver on sending in ideas. We've curated our favorites. Way better than speeches. And don't forget your totally real, but not legal, diploma by taking our short online test.
