Clarification On "Fake Tradition Is Traditional"

I think I got the original post slightly off. I was critiquing Sam Kriss' claim that the best traditions come from “just doing stuff”, without trying to tie things back to anything in the past. The counterexample I was thinking of was all the 2010s New Atheist attempts to reinvent “church, but secular”. These were well-intentioned. Christians get lots of benefits from going to church, like a good community. These benefits don't seem obviously dependent on the religious nature. So instead of tying your weekly meeting back to what Jesus and St. Peter and so on said two thousand years ago, why not “just do stuff” and have a secular weekly meeting? Most of these attempts fell apart. One of them, the Sunday Assembly, clings to existence but doesn't seem too successful. People with ancient traditions 1, people who just do stuff 0. But after thinking about it more, maybe this isn't what Sam means. https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/clarification-on-fake-tradition-is

Church without God: How secular congregations fill a need for some nonreligious AmericansThe Lake Sun, By Jacqui Frost , on January 11, 2024https://www.lakenewsonline.com/premium/stories/church-without-god-how-secular-congregations-fill-a-need-for-some-nonreligious-americans,66041The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.4.3 featuring Scott Dickie, Phil the Skeptic Atheist, Jonathan Roudabush and Helen GreeneThe panel delves into the intriguing emergence of atheist churches and secular congregations as a burgeoning trend. These gatherings, exemplified by initiatives like the Sunday Assembly, provide a unique space for non-religious individuals to partake in community-building activities reminiscent of religious rituals. The concept includes shared testimonies, collective singing, and even de-baptism ceremonies, all aimed at fostering a sense of belonging without the supernatural elements inherent in traditional religious practices. The discussion unfolds with the recognition of the inherent human desire for social connection and community support. The panel acknowledges the positive aspects of these secular gatherings, particularly for individuals who have recently transitioned away from religious communities. The prospect of finding a supportive community, engaging in shared activities, and building bonds akin to a family is considered a valuable aspect of these initiatives. However, the panel also critically examines the language used in the article, expressing concerns about the term "atheist churches." They highlight the potential for such terminology to inadvertently convey the idea that atheism itself is a form of religion. This prompts a discussion on the need for clear distinctions between secular communities and religious institutions, emphasizing that atheism is a lack of belief in deities rather than a religious stance. As the conversation unfolds, the panel members share their thoughts on the broader implications of this trend. While acknowledging the likelihood of secular congregations coexisting with religious counterparts, they foresee a potential shift where the influence and prominence of traditional religious congregations might diminish over time. However, the consensus remains that complete eradication of religious congregations is unlikely, with coexistence being the more plausible outcome in the evolving landscape of human community and belief systems.

This episode of Greenbelt's ‘Somewhere To Believe In' comes in the form of a one-off Christmas reflection; brought to you by our friend Beloved Sara Zaltash, a ‘non-denominational rabble-rouser and soul-soother for a world in crisis'. It was our pleasure to welcome Beloved Sara to Greenbelt for the first time this year, along with her heavenly spiritual chants and adaptation of the Islamic Call to Prayer. And now she's back again, reflecting on Christmas, with personal stories of community, songs of hope and prayers of blessings. As Beloved Sara says, we hope ‘you gather around these sounds in warmth and with whatever is dear to you, and that these words shine a beacon of friendship into your Christmas season.' This episode features strong language and references to drugs._Late this November, Greenbelt Festival's Creative Director, Paul Northup, called me with a request to collaborate on something like a podcast, that wasn't quite a podcast, to be shared with the Greenbelt community this Christmastime. I wish I could say that the first emotion I experienced was humility. I wish I was that saint! In truth, I was overwhelmed with giddy delight. Was I really being asked to share my thoughts, stories and songs with the Greenbelt community, that vital and gorgeous and exceptionally kind bunch of people that had won my heart this summer when I performed at the festival? In truth, it took a whole afternoon of pinching myself before the thrill of Paul's request subsided, before I could settle into what was being asked of me. Did Greenbelters really want to hear more from me? What can I give them, poor as I am? As the start of Advent loomed, Paul and I realised that the task ahead was greater than the time available, and that we needed a different approach. Paul wondered about centering the not-exactly-a-podcast on my voice, seeing as it was my voice that had been received so kindly by Greenbelters at the festival. It was then that I remembered a piece of storytelling I had written for a guest slot at Sunday Assembly East End in December 2016 - a personal story, woven with song, that was Christmassy and yet not-exactly-Christmassy. This story is what we have chosen to share with you this year. Funnily enough, Sunday Assembly thought that the story was actually too Christian for their congregation. For me, this story abridges my whole life's experience of sincere acceptance, inclusion and welcome into Christian community, regardless of how I have shown up. This story does not promote any specific belief or doctrine, except perhaps the belief in the redemptive power of song. That's what we have to give you; we give our hearts. Thank you for all of the support and willingness offered by the Greenbelt team and not-quite-podcast contributors. Thank you especially to Abigail Maxwell, a Greenbelter and Quaker who provides us with a sobering prayer of blessing that we can hold alongside the gladness of the season. I pray that our offering greets you in the finest health, that you gather around these sounds in warmth and with whatever is dear to you, and that these words shine a beacon of friendship into your Christmas season.Yours ever, Your own, Beloved Sara Zaltash_00:00 - Introduction01:45 - In the bleak midwinter07:33 - A Christmas song10:04 - Eric16:16 - School28:10 - Merry Christmas28:37 - A prayer of blessing31:04 - ‘In the Bleak Midwinter' song Hosted on Acast. What is the purpose of the Sunday assembly?

This podcast is the first in a series of episodes where I'll be focussing on our annual event here in the south of England called the Happy Startup Summercamp. We first held this event in 2013 and we're now into our 7th year. Summercamp is the business event that Laurence and I were looking for when we were running our digital agency. It's a heady mix of inspirational talks, practical workshops, fun activities, deep conversations and serendipitous connections. We have veteran campers who come back every year and we have new attendees who have no idea what they're in for. They come together as strangers and leave as friends. Over the next 5 episodes I'll be talking to some of our Summercamp contributors so you can get to know them and what they bring to camp. My hope is you'll have a better understanding of what it's like to be at the event. I'm kicking off the series with the MC of Summercamp and the glue that sticks everything together. Sanderson Jones is one of the founders of Sunday Assembly and also the creator of Lifefulness. In Sandeson's words Lifefulness is to congregation what mindfulness is to meditation. During the discussion we talk about peak experiences, the importance of gathering with others and what it's like to be on startup love island. If you're passionate about building community and hosting events that create real impact then listen on. In the second episode of The Sacred, Elizabeth talks to comedian, writer and founder of the Sunday Assembly, Pippa Evans. Pippa is a regular on BBC radio 4 and has written and presented series for other broadcasters and networks. She also helped found the Sunday Assembly, which had been dubbed the "atheist church" on its inception. The organisation has grown to become a global movement for people who value faith and spirituality, in spite of not identifying as 'religious'. This episode also features an interview with Theos researcher Simon Perfect, on his project about free speech and university campuses. The Sacred is a podcast about the things we cherish and hold dear to us. It is supported by Theos, the religion and society think tank, and is produced by Hussein Kesvani and No Country media.
