Alan Davies is getting everything out into the open and bringing his new tour to Kiwi stages. The British comedian is best known for his regular spot on the long-running panel show QI and his portrayal of the titular role in Jonathan Creek. And now he's returning to New Zealand's shores for the first time in a decade – with ten performances of his new stand-up show over the span of two weeks. ‘Think Ahead' was written alongside the second volume of his memoir —White Male Stand-Up— which deals with the ongoing impacts of childhood abuse, the death of his mother, and navigating the world of comedy and television. “I started to work up, kind of alongside it, ideas for a stand-up show, and really wanting to talk about all the more difficult things I've experienced in that form,” he told Heather du Plessis-Allan. “Thinking, well, I've been doing this for 35 years, I'm able to turn my hand to it.” Davis knows he's not alone in his experiences, that there are people in the audience who've experienced similar things and are sitting there in silence – just as he did. “Let's get it out in the open.” “I try and be as funny as possible, and present a full version of who I am, really, and it's, I think it's really paying off, the response is really good, it's been very gratifying, I didn't know how it would go,” he told du Plessis-Allan. “I just think it's the best show I've ever done.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Life of the Record

For the 45th anniversary of The Soft Boys' influential second album, Underwater Moonlight, we take a detailed look at how it was made. When Robyn Hitchcock first started a band in Cambridge, England under the name Dennis and the Experts, he recruited Morris Windsor, Andy Metcalfe and Alan Davies. They changed their name to The Soft Boys and released an EP called Give It to the Soft Boys in 1977. Kimberly Rew replaced Alan Davies on guitar as they began working with Radar Records, releasing a single in 1978. After Radar dropped them, they self-released their first album, A Can of Bees, in 1979. At this point, Matthew Seligman replaced Andy Metcalfe on bass as they began working on the material for their second full-length album. Underwater Moonlight was eventually released by the Armageddon label in 1980. In this episode, Robyn Hitchcock describes how the band shifted musically from doing Captain Beefheart-inspired art rock into more Beatles-influenced pop rock. With Matthew Seligman rejoining the band and bringing a more melodic approach to his bass playing, Hitchcock began coming up with more traditional song structures. As punk was rearing its head in England in the late 70s, The Soft Boys proudly wore their 60s influences on their sleeve, incorporating three-part harmonies, jangly guitars and the occasional sitar. Hitchcock wrote with some of the political anger of punk, but also added J.G. Ballard-influenced grotesque imagery. From recording on a shoestring budget, to producer Pat Collier's 60s approach of bouncing tracks, to the absence of a former girlfriend inspiring the majority of the songs, to the band ending early but going on to inspire legions of fans, including bands like R.E.M. and the Replacements, to a record chock full of power pop gems, we'll hear the stories of how the album came together.

Alan Davies is known for his natural, relatable storytelling skills across the page, the stage, and the screen. The comedian is a staple of British television, with roles on the long-running ‘Jonathan Creek' and popular comedy panel show ‘QI'. It's been more than a decade since Davies last did a stand-up tour, but he's happy to report it's going well. “It had been so long that it was feeling, beginning to feel like a gamble,” he told Jack Tame. “I spent some time unpacking stuff from my childhood, doing a, writing about it, and that process took a while and changed a lot of how I viewed myself, and what I wanted to do, and what I wanted to say. This show, ‘Think Ahead', was created at around the same time Davies was writing another volume of his memoir ‘White Male Stand-Up', which deals with issues from Davies' childhood, career, and his adult life. “And I've got to a place now where I think the show's really quite sort of, it's a bit richer and deeper, and better than stuff I've done before,” he explained. “I'm really sort of proud of it.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth

You might notice that this episode of Rosebud is slightly longer than usual - and that's because this story is so powerful. This conversation with the stand-up, writer, actor and TV star Alan Davies is virtually unedited - because it's unmissable. In it, Alan tells Gyles about the two most significant, and devastating, events of his childhood: the death of his mother when he was only six years old, and the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of his father after she died. And he tells Gyles about how he has healed and gone on to have his own family, and experience unconditional love with his own children. This is a very sad, at times upsetting, episode, but also one full of hope, laughter and insight. It is well worth your time, and please get in touch with hello@rosebudpodcast.com with any thoughts you have on the themes Alan and Gyles discuss here. Alan Davies is on tour in the UK, Australia and elsewhere - get tickets here. His new book, White Male Stand-Up is also available now. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Sustainability Now! | Barry Zalph | The Folly of Colonizing Mars | 9-1-25

We bring you something a little lighter and more fanciful on this Labor Day holiday on Sustainability Now!, as your host, Justin Mog, shelves his plans for colonizing Mars with Barry Zalph, retired engineer and environmental advocate. Tune in for a conversation that will debunk some of the myths about our ability to successfully settle humans on Mars and, hopefully, help you understand just how precious Earth is and how important it is that we focus all of our energy and innovation into protecting the only truly habitable planet we know of. The ideas for colonizing Mars fall into two categories: Living underground for protection from the radiation that bombards the surface; and terraforming Mars to make it more suitable for human habitation. Tune in to hear more about Barry's top ten list of the stupidest assumptions behind the “terraforming” idea: 1) We can increase the density of the Martian atmosphere by 160x; 2) We can shift the Martian atmosphere from 96% CO2 to match the earth's atmosphere; 3) We can control the CO2 concentration of the reconstituted atmosphere to 350 ppm +/- 100 ppm, outside of which humans can't function; 4) We can bring enough organisms from earth to build not one but many diverse, resilient ecosystems there, so that inevitable fluctuations in ecosystem health don't collapse all life on the planet; 5) We can bring enough small and large animals, not just microbes and plants, to reproduce without inbreeding; 6) We can function well with the day length, year length, sky color, solar radiation, solar wind, weather, clouds, gravity, magnetic field, etc. all different from that with which we have evolved for millions of years; 7) The first group of colonists, no more than a couple hundred, didn't die of boredom, claustrophobia, mutual murder, and alienation while living underground and slaving toward an impossible terraformed utopian ideal; 8) The resident population of Earth would keep busting their asses to provide the ludicrous amounts of energy, materials, and labor over at least 100 years in an attempt to fulfill this dream; 9) There is no life on Mars, or any life on Mars can coexist with our living systems or deserves to be killed off to make room for us; and 10) It is ethically sound for us to colonize another planet. What could possibly go wrong?? For more, check out: Book: A City on Mars (2023), Kelly and Zach Weinersmith - humorous and well-researched. Are we bold pioneers venturing into the unknown, or just reckless tenants abandoning Earth in search of a new abode? Our panel discuss whether space settlement is inevitable in humanity's near future and how pushing the boundaries of space exploration could make extra-terrestrial travel more accessible to the masses. Matt and Luke are back aboard their TV Time Machine to journey back to June of 2000. June isn't a great time for television, and the four shows that debuted back in 2000 are proof of that. There's McCready and Daughter which is the first post EastEnders role for Patsy Palmer. Then there's BBC comedy Chambers which was a studio based sitcom about a law chambers which stars a post Corrie Sarah Lancashire, strange ITV comedy Up Rising about a neighbourhood and its residents. Finally, Alan Davies stars in BBC comedy A Many Spilntered Thing about a man who moans about having two women in his life. It's a strange, and quite frankly instantly forgettable set of shows but it's always interesting to look back at what works and what doesn't about these shows that have disappeared.
