Trigger warning: includes frank discussion of eating disorders, body image, and mental health. How do you find laughter in something that nearly kills you? In this episode, comedian and mental health advocate Dave Chawner takes us on a bold, brutally honest - and often hilarious - journey through his experience of living with anorexia. But this isn't your typical “overcoming adversity” tale. Dave doesn't sugarcoat the reality of his eating disorder. He talks openly about how it began not with food, but with control… how it was rewarded before it was recognised… and how, for a long time, he loved it. Through vivid, sometimes shocking, and darkly funny anecdotes, Dave shows how anorexia became both his obsession and his comfort - until it became unbearable. And yet, laughter is what pulled him through. From bingeing under the duvet to bingeing on comedy, Dave found healing not in silence, but in stand-up. His hit Edinburgh show Normally Abnormal turned personal pain into public catharsis, proving that humour can be both a scalpel and a salve. If you've ever struggled with food, control, body image, or just the pressure of being “fine,” this is an episode you need to hear. It's about anorexia, yes - but also about masculinity, identity, recovery, and how comedy can reach where words often fail. If you can relate to Dave's experience and would like more information, he references two websites: Hub of Hope [https://hubofhope.co.uk/] - the UK's largest mental health support directory, and Beat Eating Discorder [https://www.beateatingdisorders.org.uk/]. You can find equivalent resources available in other countries via simple web searches. We always recommend you speak to a GP or health professional if you are personally affected by any of the topics covered in the podcast.

In this episode I spoke with stand-up comedian Dave Chawner who talked about nurturing gratitude, the best Easter ever and Hell on toast. It's difficult to say enough about Dave Chawner, who is not only an excellent stand-up comedian but also a passionate mental health campaigner, whose dedication to the subject has resulted in a TED talk, an award-winning show and a best-selling book. I approached Dave after seeing his 2022 show "Underdog" at the Brighton Fringe, and was delighted to find him as excitable to talk with as he is performing on stage. He's a wonderful comic and a generous human being. This week on Wellbeing we are talking with Christine Jap about her anorexia journey. Christine started experiencing anorexia at age twelve and after a journey with it only recovered recently in 2017 while attending university. Today Christine is the PR officer for The Elephant In The Room Foundation, a charity that aims to improve the lives of individuals with Anorexia Nervosa. This is the sixth instalment in our 13 part series on Anorexia. This episode is the fourth and last with females that have had a journey with anorexia. Next week we cover the important topic of male anorexia. In this episode, Christine talks about why she developed anorexia, the way she viewed food while going through anorexia, how her family tried to help her with her anorexia, how it impacted her daily life, her journey with recovery, the challenges of anorexia recovery and how recovering has impacted her life positively. “Inside I knew there was something else going on, that it wasn't really my fault. Everyone was kinda just saying 'Oh this is your fault, you just don't want to get better'', so that reinforced my shame and negative thoughts” - Christine Jap on this episode of Wellbeing Tune in next week when we talk with comedian Dave Chawner about his anorexia journey We would love to hear from you! Clive started off the week by taking a look at the Rail Strikes that gripped the nation last week and asked if members of the Construction Industry were affected. With Airlines set to strike throughout the summer, is there a possibility that our industry might strike? He put this question to Andy Prendergast, National Secretary for the GMB union, and friends of the show and tradespeople Danny Madden and Kye Belmont.Clive then focused on if Career Switchers are the answer to labor shortage? A quarter of a million workers are needed to fill the void that will be left by 2026. 28% of Brits that work or used to work in the corporate sector/professional services agreed they are considering or have already kicked off a career in the trades. So is this the answer? Jackie Ducker Exec Director of Customer & Product at CITB, Joe Doyle - Business Mentor for tradespeople and Electrician, Nick Bundy gave their thoughts on this. Then he took a look at the question if stereotypes are still running rampant in the industry. This was in conjunction with an article in the Daily Mail saying that builders had gone Woke ! Clive spoke to Bill Hill, CEO of the Construction Industry Charity The Lighthouse Club, Irish Builder and TV Presenter Peter Finn and Former Tradesperson now Business and Life Coach Wayne Bettess all about this. And to finish off proceedings, in conjunction with International Joke day being on the 1st of July, he discussed the best jokes people have heard. We had help with this from Comedians Mike Mclean and Dave Chawner, Sparky Adam Pavey and you the listener.

In this weeks episode, Han is joined by Dave Chawner. Dave is a number 1 best-selling author, award-winning stand up, presenter, and mental health campaigner. I first came across Dave's genius comedy which works to change the tone around mental health when I watched his TedTalk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqbL-UhhyPk) about his experience of Anorexia Nervosa. Dave now uses comedy in order to talk to hard to reach groups about mental health, which led to Dave producing Comedy for Coping, a course for individuals to gain peer support, celebrate good mental health, and build their identity further to recovery. In the podcast, we take a similar structure to Dave's book, Weight Expectations: One Man's Recovery from Anorexia. Together we talk about Dave's love of writing a diary, and explore the many stages of eating disorder recovery including pre contemplation, contemplation, preparation, relapse, action and maintenance. Within these stages, we discuss topics like denial, loneliness, early intervention, identity, numbing, addiction, sex drive, recovery & fun, highs and lows, and understanding that not everyday will be perfect. This episode is packed with great advice, stories, and I promise you'll have a giggle along the way!To find out more about Dave and Comedy for Coping, head over here: https://www.davechawner.co.uk/mental-health-comedyPlease note that we do discuss topics that some individuals may find triggering including anorexic behaviours and alcohol addiction.
Pro-feminist activist Chris Green founded the UK arm of the excellent White Ribbon campaign and, as he tells our Mick, has a lot more up his sleeve when it comes to being an excellent ally to women – and engaging more men to do the same. This is the second in our International Men's Day 2021 series of interviews. Make sure you have a listen to Jen's chat with comedian and author Dave Chawner about his experience of having anorexia, and eating disorder psychiatrist Dr Stephen Anderson, who is also a member of the board of trustees at Beat, the UK's eating disorder charity. And obviously, keep your eyes and ears peeled for more MANterviews in the November pipeline.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. It's that time of year where we let some dudes talk, for a change. In the first part of our 2021 International Men's Day series, Jen chats to comedian and author Dave Chawner about his experience of having anorexia, as well as Dr Stephen Anderson, an eating disorder psychiatrist and member of the board of trustees at Beat, the Uk's eating disorder charity. They chat about what it's like to be a man suffering from an illness so typically associated with women, why eating disorders are on the rise in men, and why it's so important for those who are suffering to seek help. If you're worried about your own or someone else's health, help is available, and you can contact Beat 365 days a year on 0808 801 0677 or beateatingdisorders.org.uk . While we've got you, Stephen is raising money for Beat by running the 2278 miles of Route 66 virtually, and has 853 left to go since starting in April.
