POPULARITY
Following the amazing success of their earlier show, War of the Worlds (On a Budget), Thos sits down again with Becky Owen-Fisher and Tom Fox, the creative minds behind Lamphouse Theatre, to discuss their latest comedy musical show, the five star 2024 Edfringe hit, Frankenstein (On a Budget). Tackling everything from Mont Blanc-Gate to how you compose songs for a devised improvised show, via a yellow leotard, this conversation also explains how to get the lightness you also need the darkness. It's a monster mash-up!
Colm and Thos conclude the MusicalTalk in-depth review of the 2024 EdFringe by looking at three of the most diverse and different shows that you could have seen in Scotland this summer - Mary Mary Quite Contrary, a spoof musical about 1960s and 70s moral campaigner, Mary Whitehouse; Behind the Curtain, a hugely charming youth musical giving us a contemporary take on a 42nd Street-style story; and the hugely accomplished Wallis, the musicalisation of the Edward and Mrs Simpson story (perhaps better known as "Windsor and Walli's affair" to Follies fans!). There's something for everyone in this insightful episode!
Four songs, three shows, two full EdFringe musicals on YouTube, one discussion but not quite yet a partridge in a pear tree. Instead, Colm and Thos discuss a disturbing trend at the 2024 EdFringe relating to straw men and amoral behaviour, before turning their attention to three rather impressive new musicals - Crispr! The Gene Editing Musical, A Jaffa Cake the Musical and the Wellbrick Centre on Roswell Drive in an episode so delicious, you'll wonder why you don't eat it with a fork!
Songs! Reviews! Insights! Exclamation Marks! All these things can be yours in this week's episode of MusicalTalk as we continue our in-depth look at some of the best musical theatre offerings from the 2024 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. In this punctuation-filled episode, Thos chats to Colm about some of the shows that caught their eyes (and ears) this year - including Reject Me Already, A Show About Tomorrow and the surprisingly moving (and funny) Fringe! The Musical!!
MusicalTalk continues its unrivalled analysis of some of the best of the 2024 EdFest musicals as Mike and Thos look at two very different shows linked by questions of status - A Jaffa Cake Musical and The Greatest Musical the World Has Ever Seen by Randy Thatcher. Hear songs and discussion and find out if writing a show within constraints can actually be creatively freeing.
Hoorah! It's time for MusicalTalk's annual in-depth delve into the wonderful world of EdFringe musical theatre, and this week Thos and Mike look at three hilarious, touching and intriguing musicals that you could have seen at this summer's Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Under the microscope this week are: The Emu War, the Wellbrick Centre on Roswell Drive and the return of the 2023 MusicalTalk Pick of the Fringe, the ever brilliant Potty the Plant. With splendid songs from each of these cracking shows, this bumper episode will put a smile on your face and take you back the summer of 2024 at the world's largest arts festival.
EP75 - Graham Kay - LIVE @edfringe 2024 - Ice DreamsMick has never fully recovered from his divorce from Cheryl Anne. For the past 10 years, he's been adrift, disconnected from any sense of happiness and—worse—his three teenage sons, who barely acknowledge him as their dad. While his ex-wife and kids thrive, Mick's stuck managing a bus depot in Sheffield, surrounded by colleagues who show him little respect. Life's monotony is slowly crushing him, until, pushed to the brink, Mick makes a drastic decision: he converts one of his buses into an ice cream truck. What starts as a desperate attempt to find purpose sets Mick on a life-changing journey. From battling local ice cream turf wars to dealing with his own self-doubt, Mick is forced to reckon with the demons he's been avoiding for years. Along the way, he'll have to rebuild his bond with his sons, rediscover his own self-worth, and, for once, stand up for himself. Filled with laughter, heart, and some questionable ice cream jingles, Ice Dreams is a tale of redemption, family, and one man's journey to find the sweetness in life again. EP74 - Ronnie Neville - LIVE @edfringe 2024 - Shoot For The StarsTom Jones, a government guidance counsellor, thought he was in for a relaxing trip to the Olympic Games in Paris with his trusty four-legged companion, Rover. But things quickly spiral out of control when Tom stumbles into the locker room of Australian breakdancing sensation ‘Raygun' and, in a moment of questionable judgement, suggests she incorporate a "Kangaroo dance" into her routine—hoping it will give her a leap to first place. When the routine flops and ‘Raygun' scores a humiliating zero, Tom finds himself the target of an angry mob of Australians hungry for revenge. Fleeing across Paris with Rover by his side, Tom must dodge the furious Aussies, even as the chase extends beyond the city limits. Along the way, he finds unexpected allies in actress Delta Goodrem and a sharp-shooting Turkish Olympian named Ben Yilmaz. Tom's wild dash for safety will have you wondering: will he outrun the vengeful Aussies, or is payback just a jump away? EP71 - Ali Woods - Rock Your WorldThe lights of Blackpool might be flickering, but 84-year-old club promoter Jemima is still the town's glittering disco ball. She's spent decades throwing the wildest nights in town, despite secretly hating northerners. But with Blackpool crumbling faster than a biscuit in a brew, Jemima's final mission is clear: host the biggest club night the town has ever seen. Her biggest obstacle? Her 110-year-old mother, Susan—still alive, still scheming, and still promoting rival club nights out of spite. And if that's not enough, enter Dr. Rock, the local quack who doles out medical advice like he's playing a game of Operation. As Jemima battles sticks of rock and family drama, will she manage to save Blackpool's nightlife one last time? EP70 - William Thompson - LIVE @edfringe 2024 - Brokedown MountainFrank Lignos has spent the last 10 years trucking the open roads of the UK, but at 30, with seven kids from two exes, he's more lost than his sat nav. While on his latest job—delivering a human heart to Scotland for life-saving surgery—his truck breaks down 500 miles from the hospital. With no options left, he starts hoofing it down the road, until Ben Dover (yes, really) pulls up in his campervan and offers him a lift. Little does Frank know, Ben's not just saving his delivery, but possibly his love life too. What starts as a bumpy ride filled with questionable snacks, over-shared bathroom stops, and more flatulence than either man cares to admit, soon turns into something deeper. As they wind their way to Scotland, Frank realizes that this journey might just open up a door he's been too afraid to knock on all his life. The world's most exciting clown opens his Wonderbox, sort-of. Either you know who Zach Zucker is and you love his work, or you're going to soon; he is one hell of a comedian. It's worth mentioning that his healthy distain for rules makes him an insanely good comic but also makes him not exactly follow the rules of a podcast. So while most people turn up with an idea of the podcast, Zach brings some incredible stories about faking a broken leg at school, about trying to date someone while tripping and vomiting… I mean it's sensational stuff. Zach is hosting his insane late-night spectacular Stamptown at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, at the Pleasance on 3rd, 15-17, 22-24. Go to EdFringe.com to get those tickets. Strong recommend. Russell's off to Canada and Scandinavia soon with his touring show. You need to click some russellhoward.co.uk for mad deeds. See you on the flip, you damn dirty ape. In this week's episode, you can enjoy songs from Jingle Street, the five star hit musical from the 2023 EdFringe, and hear insights and observations from its writer, lyricist, producer, director, choreographer, assistant director and one of the lead actors on what it takes to create and develop a show for the Fringe and beyond, particularly as a new theatrical company. And as a special bonus, there's a chance to hear an exclusive recording - a rather brilliant cut song from this wonderful musical show. You'll love it - we "pinky swear" it!
It's songs galore and laughs aplenty as Thos talks to the talented people behind Chordstruck Theatre about their hit shows, On Your Bike (Winner of the Best Musical at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2021) and Jingle Street (Five Stars from MusicalTalk, EdFringe 2023). It's a lovely, insightful and fun filled conversation about the collective creative process of making not just one, but two, musicals! As Felix, one of the characters in On Your Bike, might say "Winner Winner Chicken* Dinner" (*falafel also available)
Join Thos as he talks with Shaye Poulton Richards, the talent behind the EdFringe success, Lies All The Way Down - a New Chamber Musical, a show that uses polyphonic sounds beyond the usual soundscape provided by a quartet to create the intense atmosphere needed for a pyschological thriller exploring the friend we make and the lies we tell. And hear songs and music from the show that help illustrate Shaye's creative process and her favoured combination of modern folk and contemporary classical sounds.
This week we welcome the brilliant actor and character comedian Alex Lowe to the podcast, recorded backstage at The Tyne Theatre during his tour of Clinton Baptiste's RollerGhoster. We talk about spooky stuff including ghosts and the unscrupulous tactics used by touring psychics, as well as the influences that informed the creation of Clinton Baptiste and his back story. Alex takes us on a journey through his career in television and radio, as well as how he first took to the West End stage aged just thirteen. Alex explains some of the more difficult situations he finds himself in whilst touring as Clinton, and how a changing audience can be problematic in the current era. We also discuss how the BBC can sometimes come across as patronising whilst trying to appear both inclusive and impartial, and why certain comedy references might not quite cut it with a younger crowd, especially if you name drop Judith Chalmers! Please follow us on Social Media (links below):All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis GunnPlease buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodTwitter: https://twitter.com/tvtimespodSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialAlex's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/baptisteclintonTwitter: https://twitter.com/alexlowe51Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/realclintonbTik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@clintonbaptiste0Get Ticket's for Clinton Baptiste's RollerGhoster here: https://www.clintonbaptiste.com/tourGet tickets to 'Steve Otis Gunn is Uncomfortable' @EdFringe here: https://tickets.thespaceuk.com/event/911:2527Produced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com Hosted on Acast. Today on The podcast we have 'friend of the pod' Stefania Licari popping in for a zoom-chat all about her process in preparing for the Edinburgh Fringe. Stefania lifts the lid on the moment that changed her life forever and set her on course to being a comedian, and why she is planning to diverge away from medical comedy. There isn't much telly chat this week, just a passing mention of E.R, but it's still an interesting listen nonetheless. Please follow us on Social Media (links below):All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis GunnPlease buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodTwitter: https://twitter.com/tvtimespodSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialStefania's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/licaristefaniaTwitter: https://twitter.com/StefaniaLicariFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/licaristefania/Get Ticket's for Stefania's Show here: https://www.stefanialicari.com/trust-me-im-a-comedianGet tickets to 'Steve Otis Gunn is Uncomfortable' @EdFringe here: https://tickets.thespaceuk.com/event/911:2527Produced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com Hosted on Acast. This week we welcome the beloved prankster, broadcaster and author Dom Joly to the podcast. I was lucky enough to talk to Dom backstage before one of his performances of 'The Conspiracy Tourist' whereby he opened up extensively about the trials and tribulations around his seminal Channel 4 show Trigger Happy TV, including scenes he couldn't air and having no control over the shoddy American remake. He also talks about how his follow up TV show 'This is Dom Joly' was painfully misunderstood, and how he really felt whilst participating in 'Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls'. Dom shares his love of Gogglebox and reality TV in general, and reveals how he'd still rather have made it as a musician than been successful in comedy. Dom now finds joy in travelling and writing his books, the latest of which deals with the growing problem of online Conspiracy theories including why some people think Finland might not actually exist. Please follow us on Social Media (links below):All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis GunnPlease buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodTwitter: https://twitter.com/tvtimespodSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialDom's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/realdomjolyTwitter: https://twitter.com/domjolyFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/officialdomjolyTik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@hereisdomjolyGet Ticket's for Dom's Conspiracy Tourist tour here: https://www.domjoly.tv/dom-joly-tour/Get tickets to 'Steve Otis Gunn is Uncomfortable' @EdFringe here: https://tickets.thespaceuk.com/event/911:2527Produced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com Hosted on Acast. What is musical theatre? It's a big questions and Thos is asking it. Can a show be a musical without words? Can a show be a musical without music? Is there any point in actually trying to define what makes a musical anyway? And as an illustration of how wide musical theatre can really be, Thos talks to the talented people behind five-star EdFringe show, The Wreck of the Queen Thomasina, which is a verse play with songs and definately plays with the form in a delicious way. Vivat Regina!
This week's guest is the multi-talented writer Giles Paley-Phillips who chats about his various projects, including his film company, writing career and his many podcasts. We find plenty of common ground along the way including the difficulty in finding time to read, writing to a soundtrack, and even being at the same Glastonbury Festival, although Giles was performing whilst I was a mere punter. We also discuss the annoyance of having to rely on social media whether we like it or not, and how influencers are gaining power over the commissioning of new TV projects. Giles shares his love for Columbo and his disdain for the resurgence of game shows, while I somehow raise the topics of MAFS and Naked Attraction yet again, but come on, how can I not? Please follow us on Social Media (links below):All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis GunnPlease buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodTwitter: https://twitter.com/tvtimespodSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialGiles's SocialsInsta: https://www.instagram.com/eliistender10Twitter: https://twitter.com/eliistender10Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/eliistender10TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@eliistender10Get tickets to 'Steve Otis Gunn is Uncomfortable' @EdFringe here: https://tickets.thespaceuk.com/event/911:2527Produced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com Hosted on Acast. This week's guest is the highly entertaining Professor Richard Wiseman, who is not only a psychologist, author and magician, but also a podcaster. In this conversation we discuss our experiences with the paranormal, including lucid dreaming and theatrical superstitions, whilst exploring the psychology behind fear and belief. I explain the challenges of overcoming a criminal mindset while Richard recounts anecdotes from his early appearances on television and how he overcame nervousness thanks to Richard Madeley. We also discuss the difficulty of suspending your disbelief while watching TV, the importance of authenticity in comedy and the demise of event television. Richard also explains why he has no interest whatsoever in music and is therefore immune to jingles. Please Follow us on Social Media (links below):All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis GunnPlease buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodTwitter: https://twitter.com/tvtimespodSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialRichard's SocialsInsta: https://www.instagram.com/instawisemanTwitter: https://twitter.com/richardwisemanFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ProfRichardWisemanYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@QuirkologyListen to Richard's podcast 'On Your Mind' here: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/richard-wisemans-on-your-mind/id1669063059Get tickets to 'Steve Otis Gunn is Uncomfortable' @EdFringe here: https://tickets.thespaceuk.com/event/911:2527Listen to my album 'We Argue in Silence' on Spotify here: https://open.spotify.com/album/73l1SWh5M9RTNiH0WD6UnPWatch the video for 'Made in England' here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AS6ZYnCd1K4Produced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com Hosted on Acast. In a change to the current schedule we find ourselves with a curve ball of an episode that it is in effect something of an announcement. This might be a podcast or a therapy session, you decide. In this episode Steve interviews himself and discusses the idea behind his upcoming debut Edinburgh show and all the trials and tribulations leading up to it. They say talking to yourself could well be a sign of madness, so at least one of these Steves is in trouble.Trigger warning: There is talk of various unsavoury subjects that some may find troubling. It's time for part two of Thos' chat with the talented Sam Cochrane and Alex Prescot, the people behind Runesical, the 2022 EdFringe hit about its ingenious new online “make your own adventure” Youtube musical version that you can watch now.
This week's episode is a little different. I take to the streets of Edinburgh during The Fringe to accost tourists and artistes in town for the World's biggest arts festival. Armed with not one, but sometimes two microphones, I go in search of soundbite gold by asking people about their likes and dislikes when it comes to television. Along the way I bump into Comedians, singers, puppeteers and playwrights, who all share their thoughts about both the festival and the idiot box. I accidentally interview Matt Hutchinson (he'll be back), some guys from Boston, a man called Firefly (I have questions) and Aimee Taylor, who educates me about the dangers of Andrew Tate while singing the praises of Sherlock. I then chat Seinfeld with Moe Singleton before attempting to interview a silent Puppet called Bill, who was celebrating his 44th birthday. Later I bump into to the finely named John McEwan-Whyte who reveals an aversion to WWF, Buffy, and the over abundance of Boobs on TV. I was also lucky enough to come across the brilliant Stefania Licari who jumped on the mic to tell us about her experiences working as a doctor in the NHS before embarking on a stand up career, which led to her sold out show at this year's Fringe. Last but in no way least was the wonderful Kristina DeGiovanni, a diagnosed narcoleptic who's play The Temp was thrilling audiences at The Gilded Balloon. We discuss a myriad of topics including the unrealistic language spoken in the TV show Suits, and why the mini-series might be the way forward in a world with a shrinking attention span. Kristina educates me about the clever way in which Gen Z alter common phrases online in order to circumvent censorship, and expresses her anger toward 'Friends', which in her opinion, has made New York a more frustrating place to live.Follow us on Instagram & Twitter (links below):All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis Gunn,Please buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops and online, or by contacting my good self.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodTwitter: https://twitter.com/tvtimespodSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialGuest Socials:https://www.instagram.com/matthutchinsoncomedyhttps://www.instagram.com/moedinerohttps://www.instagram.com/aimeeataylorhttps://www.instagram.com/bills44thhttps://www.instagram.com/licaristefaniahttps://www.instagram.com/thetempplayhttps://www.instagram.com/falafelemonshttps://twitter.com/johnmcewanwhyteProduced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com Hosted on Acast. Most recognised for her role on Meet the Richardson's, writer and creator of To Hull and Back (BBR4) and co-writer on C4's Hullraisers, Lucy Beaumont is about to embark on her 2023 stand up tour. Despite her massive success, she feels like she's only just getting started. We discuss her honest and frank writing style and processes – both in writing for herself whether it be stage or TV and for other characters – who come through to her via dead peoples' spirits. We also delve into her love/hate relationship with stand-up and the prejudice and misogyny she experienced early on in her career, leading her to take a hiatus from performing. Living much of her life on screen, she explains how she feels more prepared than ever to step back on the stage and she gives us some interesting insights into her next steps and future goals. 15 mins of extra content available exclusively to the Insiders Club including Lucy's experience with ADHD and the impact it's had on her career, a cracking tip about how to think about jokes, and how she's preparing for her tour Catch up with Lucy:Tickets for Lucy's 2023 tour ‘The Trouble and Strife' here:https://lucybeaumont.co.uk/home#live TW: @LucyABeaumontIG: @the_one_from_hullEverything Stu's up to:Stu's new Edfringe show “Spoilers” (WINNER Best Show 2023, Leicester Comedy Festival, woo!) is on sale now - find preview dates as well as podcast community links, social media handles and comedy clips, and Stu's official YouTube channel, all at linktr.ee/stuartgoldsmithOr join the mailing list for unspecified freebies at:www.comedianscomedian.comwww.stuartgoldsmith.comStu offers remote and in-person talks to business, distilling insights from over 400 comics on cultivating resilience and the ability to bounce back, to all levels from C-suite to team members.“There's perfect and there's perfect; and that was perfect.” David Cooper, Chief People Officer Circle Health Group Hosted on Acast. Trigger warning: Discussion of child sexual abuse.Jonny Pelham has become one of the most disarmingly hilarious comics in the UK by building his punchlines on a bedrock of unflinching honesty. There's a big difference between the comedy cliche of “saying the unsayable”, and being able to find the humanity and authenticity in a subject that people don't want to talk about. We talk about his new Edinburgh Fringe show “Optimism Over Despair”, and he leads us through the experience at that show's core: his reflections over using his set on Live At The Apollo to discuss the sexual abuse he experienced as a child. We also learn about his clinical “maladaptive daydreaming”, and what it's like to always come with a trigger warning.20mins of *double trigger-warning* extras available exclusively to the Insiders Club include Jonny on a joke that he's always found too dark to make work, but which says something very important about his experiences; how he makes the personal political; and how to make biographical work what you want it to be in the face of algorithmic soup!Go to www.comedianscomedian.com/insiders for ad-free episodes, extra content from every show that has it, and much more - including exclusive Insiders Q&As plus the incredible “self-help for comedians” special with Amanda Donnet.Catch up with Jonny:https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/jonny-pelham-optimism-over-despairwww.jonnypelham.comTW/IG: @jonny_pelhamEverything Stu's up to:Stu's new Edfringe show “Spoilers” (WINNER Best Show 2023, Leicester Comedy Festival, woo!) is ON SALE NOW atwww.stuartgoldsmith.com/ticketsAnd find preview dates as well as podcast community links, social media handles and comedy clips, and Stu's official YouTube channel, all at linktr.ee/stuartgoldsmithOr join the mailing list for unspecified freebies at:www.comedianscomedian.comwww.stuartgoldsmith.comStu offers remote and in-person talks to business, distilling insights from over 400 comics on cultivating resilience and the ability to bounce back, to all levels from C-suite to team members.“There's perfect and there's perfect; and that was perfect.” David Cooper, Chief People Officer Circle Health Group Hosted on Acast.
