JAMIE GARNER - Actor & Playwright Jamie is a multi-hyphenate artist of many skills, many accents, and many passports. They began their career performing in children's theatre across Australia, before performing, teaching, and writing with American regional theatres, then training and working in London as a writer, performer, and voiceover artist. Their directorial debut ‘Pieces of Us' (EdFringe) was Offie-nominated, and they served as Movement Consultant for Lionwoman Productions, Texas. They have recently returned home to Melbourne, appearing as Touchstone in As You Like It with Melbourne Shakespeare Company in 2025. Their newest play HUNGRY JOHANNES will be performed as a work-in-progress in the upcoming Explorations season at La Mama in Melbourne. In this episode, Jamie chats with me about the rollercoaster ride of pursuing a life in theatre and arts; how their experience of acting has been different in different parts of the globe; outlines how they go from concept to creation when making a show; and, of course, delves into why they believe theatre and arts are essential in our world. Following the amazing success of their earlier show, War of the Worlds (On a Budget), Thos sits down again with Becky Owen-Fisher and Tom Fox, the creative minds behind Lamphouse Theatre, to discuss their latest comedy musical show, the five star 2024 Edfringe hit, Frankenstein (On a Budget).  Tackling everything from Mont Blanc-Gate to how you compose songs for a devised improvised show, via a yellow leotard, this conversation also explains how to get the lightness you also need the darkness. Colm and Thos conclude the MusicalTalk in-depth review of the 2024 EdFringe by looking at three of the most diverse and different shows that you could have seen in Scotland this summer - Mary Mary Quite Contrary, a spoof musical about 1960s and 70s moral campaigner, Mary Whitehouse; Behind the Curtain, a hugely charming youth musical giving us a contemporary take on a 42nd Street-style story; and the hugely accomplished Wallis, the musicalisation of the Edward and Mrs Simpson story (perhaps better known as "Windsor and Walli's affair" to Follies fans!).  There's something for everyone in this insightful episode!

Join Thos as he talks with Shaye Poulton Richards, the talent behind the EdFringe success, Lies All The Way Down - a New Chamber Musical, a show that uses polyphonic sounds beyond the usual soundscape provided by a quartet to create the intense atmosphere needed for a pyschological thriller exploring the friend we make and the lies we tell. And hear songs and music from the show that help illustrate Shaye's creative process and her favoured combination of modern folk and contemporary classical sounds.

This week we welcome the brilliant actor and character comedian Alex Lowe to the podcast, recorded backstage at The Tyne Theatre during his tour of Clinton Baptiste's RollerGhoster. We talk about spooky stuff including ghosts and the unscrupulous tactics used by touring psychics, as well as the influences that informed the creation of Clinton Baptiste and his back story. Alex takes us on a journey through his career in television and radio, as well as how he first took to the West End stage aged just thirteen. Alex explains some of the more difficult situations he finds himself in whilst touring as Clinton, and how a changing audience can be problematic in the current era. This week we welcome the beloved prankster, broadcaster and author Dom Joly to the podcast. I was lucky enough to talk to Dom backstage before one of his performances of 'The Conspiracy Tourist' whereby he opened up extensively about the trials and tribulations around his seminal Channel 4 show Trigger Happy TV, including scenes he couldn't air and having no control over the shoddy American remake. He also talks about how his follow up TV show 'This is Dom Joly' was painfully misunderstood, and how he really felt whilst participating in 'Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls'. Dom shares his love of Gogglebox and reality TV in general, and reveals how he'd still rather have made it as a musician than been successful in comedy. What is musical theatre?  It's a big questions and Thos is asking it. Can a show be a musical without words? Can a show be a musical without music?
