In today's episode, we're joined by Phil Nichol, a comedian, actor, and musician, who takes us through his journey in comedy since the late '80s. Phil reflects on the shift from experimental to polished comedy, the pressures of audience validation, and how social media and cancel culture have changed the game. He critiques modern comedy's focus on marketability over creative risks and shares his thoughts on the importance of authenticity, long-term experience, and staying true to the craft.Follow Phil on Instagram, Facebook, and check out his websiteCheck out our Ali Woods episode here.If you enjoyed this podcast, then why not check out some of the other episodes? Welcome to the Problematic Pub Podcast, where we dive deep into the hilariously awkward and absurd aspects of life!
In this episode, I talk to the amazing comedian, PHIL NICHOL Comedian, actor, writer, musician, podcaster, and director, Nichol is a man of many talents. As a comic, he has reduced me to tears of laughter on many occasions. A regular at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and UK comedy circuit, Nichol's style of comedy is outrageous, unhinged, unexpected, and hysterically funny. Among many performances over the years, at the Edinburgh Fringe, I have watched Nichol as a guest for Nicholas Parsons Happy Hour in 2005, appear in the plays Talk Radio and True West (both 2006), Killer Joe (2007), and The School for Scandal (2009) and Hughie in 2019. He was a guest for Mervyn Stutter's 20th Anniversary Pick of the Fringe in 2012 and in London, Downstairs at The Kings Head 40th Anniversary Show in 2023. In the first of two special episodes celebrating the 40th anniversary of Downstairs at The Kings Head comedy club, I talk to the wonderful owner of the club, PETER GRAHAME about his comedy career. Downstairs at the Kings Head is one of the oldest comedy clubs in Britain. Founded in 1981 by Grahame and Huw Thomas (who became the regular compere until his retirement), the intimate venue has never moved from the Kings Head pub, Crouch End in North London. The 40th Anniversary gig which I attended took place in April 2023 (rescheduled after two years because of the pandemic). With a bill featuring Al Murray, Phil Nichol, Nick Helm, Arthur Smith, Miles Jupp, Ria Lina, Laura Smyth, Shazia Mirza and back for one night only compere, Thomas, the anniversary night was filled with laughter and nostalgia. Walking into the club that evening, just as I had done for the first time thirty years ago, brought back many happy memories, including watching Harry Hill and Jeff Green both playing one of their earliest gigs there. It was a pleasure chatting to the co-founder and promoter of this iconic comedy club. Thank you so much for listening to my podcast, if you like what you hear, please subscribe and I hope you enjoy the interview. Welcome back to SONGS IN THE KEY OF LAUGH - with this bonus episode for series 2 - we present MONSOON - an improvised dictionary musical. For our second series, we improvised a song each episode. We'd take a dictionary, choose a word at random and write a song around that word. With each episode, and each new song, we built a narrative, and now we've gone away and polished it all up, ready to present to you MONSOON - THE MUSICAL! Join David & Phil on their journey from the land of Weasel, hear as they are shipwrecked by a Monsoon, rescued by pirates, tapdance, juggle, hop and more. Will David be re-united with his love, Sumo? Listen & find out. It's quite silly. Written & Performed by Phil Nichol & David Tims. You can listen to the original, dictionary-spawned demos on the episodes of Series 2. Welcome to a new weekly podcast series. This week my fiancée Ellie and I are joined by comedian, actor and musician Phil Nichol, who takes part in a very odd quiz. Ellie tests out her unusual Christmas present on me. We play an old tape recording from my childhood in our feature Cassette Roulette. Plus there's an anti-social neighbours update and an erotic encounter with Princess Margaret. Warning: the following podcast is probably not family friendly, unless you are a particularly openminded/dysfunctional family. The second part is here! Phil Nichol's chat is turning to Corky and the Juice Pigs and being the next big thing in LA. That's right, he was the toast of Las Angeles and on MadTV. Phil Nichol (@philnichol) kicked things off with a punk rock approach to comedy. Turning up to Just For Laughs and Melbourne International Comedy Festival without a show, smashing it on the street and then ending up on TV with sell-out shows. Not a bad effort. The chat is a little heavy on the comedy, but Phil's had such an interesting career I'm sure you'll still enjoy it. He won the Edinburgh Comedy Award, met the Queen, was on MadTV - and he's still saying he's not sure he's had a good career. Such a humble dude. Corky and the Juice Pigs on MadTV performing 'REMember' He's got a weekly room on Tuesday at The Tap Room Islington with great acts trying new material, you can follow it @room_delivery Also, The Union Jack Off finally got a Twitter which you can follow @TheUnionJackOff - or get at Daniel Muggleton on Twitter & Instagram @danmuggleton.
Oh my goodness it's an episode on time, and our very first two part episode because the guest is Canada's Phil Nichol! Phil Nichol (@PhilNichol) was born in Scotland, he grew up in Canada, overcame a stutter to become a member of one of the most successful comedy bands in the world - Corky and the Juice Pigs. But the band's in Part 2, for the minute we talk about his theatre trained voice, trying to impress incredibly religious parents and Canadian & Australian place names. Mores vs. Morals here: wikidiff.com/mores/morality The history of Lake Superior here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Superior Phil is currently on the international leg of his sold-out tour Your Wrong, you can get all the details on his website www.philnichol.com Catch the second half of our chat later this week, get in touch with Daniel Muggleton on Twitter & Instagram @danmuggleton or at The Union Jack Off on Facebook.
