Our card this week is Zachary Michael Bernhardt, the 4 of Diamonds from Florida. Nearly 26 years after the eight-year-old vanished from his second-floor apartment in Clearwater, Florida, his whereabouts remain a mystery. Zachary's case is Florida's longest-running AMBER Alert. It is also a story we covered on Crime Junkie more than seven years ago. In this episode of The Deck, we're taking a fresh look at the evidence, including the 911 call Zachary's mother made in the early morning hours of September 11 to report him missing. Could there have been clues that were missed? And could statements made by Zachary's mother early on shed new light on a cold-case investigation that has stumped both detectives and Crime Junkies alike? This is the last episode of The Deck, but our mission isn't finished. We wanted to find a way to honor the show and its mission outside of podcasting, so we have created a $100,000 endowed fund in partnership with Crime Stoppers USA. With that, Crime Stoppers affiliates and programs nationwide will have access to funds for creating and printing cold case decks in perpetuity, so The Deck can live on. Think about the last time you lost it over something relatively minor. The spilled drink. The shoes left in the hallway. The question you'd been asked one too many times. Some part of you knew, even in the moment, that it wasn't that big of a deal. And you came apart anyway. But here's the truth: the small thing was never the size of your reaction. It was just the thing that landed on a system that was already completely full.In this episode, we unpack why the small stuff sets you off, when the genuinely big stuff somehow doesn't.I walk all five Capacity Patterns through it, so you can see how your pattern reaches capacity and then overflows. And why the fix isn't a better breathing technique for the moment you snap. It's building a bigger container, so the small stuff stops being the thing that overflows you.If your reactions have ever felt "too big" for what set them off, this one's for you. What You'll Learn:The frame that finally explains why small things feel hugeWhy most stress advice fails you: it manages the moment, not the fullness underneath itWhy the moment you snap is the wrong place to interveneThe first skill: catching yourself filling up before you spill over--

Your kids aren't learning emotional regulation from what you tell them about it.They're learning it from what your body does when you're stressed. They read your nervous system all day and quietly calibrate their own to match - it's co-regulation in action. In this episode, I walk all five Capacity Patterns through parenting. What each one passes on when you're stressed, and what each kid actually needs from you.So the single most powerful thing you can do for your kids' regulation isn't a new script or a gentle-parenting phrase. It's regulating your own.If you've ever sworn you'd never pass on the thing your parent handed you, start here. What You'll Learn:Why your kids learn regulation from your body, not your words What each of the five capacity patterns quietly passes on to our kidsThe one shift that changes what your kids actually learn from you--

In this episode, Alex centers on two escalating crises tied to Trump-era instability. First, there's growing speculation that Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, may be dead, brain-damaged, or in hiding—he hasn't been seen publicly in six months, and new leadership billboards notably exclude him, showcasing IRGC military commanders instead of clerics. This shift suggests Iran may be sliding from a theocracy toward a more repressive military dictatorship, with the morality police and public executions already back in force. Second, the US-Canada trade war has intensified sharply, with Trump threatening to rename Lake Ontario "Lake America" and impose steep tariffs, prompting PM Mark Carney to walk away from negotiations and retaliate with matching tariffs—despite the deep economic ties between Ontario and the US that mean the standoff will likely hurt both sides. Woven throughout are lighter personal tangents on streaming frustrations over soccer, a Ted Lasso opinion, a rumored KFC Oreo sandwich, and Below Deck.
"Many people have the misunderstanding that the boat lift was initiated by the U.S. Coast Guard—that boats only started the evacuation after the Coast Guard called for all available boats. Instead, that call went out nearly two hours after mariners had independently made the choice to help. Rather than coming in to take charge of the evacuation that was already operating successfully, the highest-ranking USCG officer, then-Lt. Michael Day, made the tremendous decision to FACILITATE and support the boat lift that had begun spontaneously. He worked with the Sandy Hook pilots to share knowledge about the harbor, offer information about available resources, and grant mariners permission to keep doing what they were doing. After interviewing both Mike Day and his higher ups, I came to understand why he felt empowered to take that approach. It stemmed from the trust his leaders placed in him to make decisions on the fly. That day, Coast Guard officers showed REAL leadership—the kind of TRUE leadership that is so lacking right now, in this dire moment.” ~Jessica DuLongJessica DuLong is a Brooklyn-based author, independent historian, journalist, editor, and NYT-bestselling book collaborator/writing coach. There's a boundary you've set more than once. You had the conversation, you were clear, you felt good walking away. And a week later, a month later, you're right back in the exact dynamic you thought you'd resolved. You know the scripts. You could teach a workshop on healthy boundaries. And you still keep over-committing, over-explaining, saying yes when everything in you meant no.The problem isn't that you don't know how to set a boundary. I'm walking all five Capacity Patterns through the exact moment a boundary collapses, and it's super specific to how your system learned to stay safe. What You'll Learn:The five pattern-specific ways a boundary collapses Why you can feel resentment building for weeks and still not say the thingThe knowing-doing gap, lived out in boundariesWhat it actually takes to hold a boundary while someone else is unhappy about it--

Picture the last real conflict you were in. Chest tight, face hot, some part of you already gone.Did you snap? Shut down? Cave and agree to something you didn't mean?Whatever you did, it probably wasn't how you'd have told a friend to handle it. Some other version of you took the wheel. Here's the real reason: that version isn't a character flaw. She's a pattern, and she has a signature move the second things get tense. This week I break down what happens in your body in the first two seconds of a conflict. Spoiler: your reaction fires before your wisdom can get a word in.Then I run all five Capacity Patterns through conflict. The one who leaves, the one who caves, the one who digs in, the one who dominates, and the one who goes cold and correct. If you've ever felt hijacked in a hard conversation and wondered why you can't just stay calm, this one names exactly what's happening. And why understanding it isn't quite enough to stop it.What You'll Learn:Why you snap, shut down, or cave the moment conflict starts (and why it's not a willpower problem)What happens in your brain in the first 74 milliseconds of a conflictThe five distinct ways people handle conflictThe reason knowing your reaction won't, by itself, stop you from repeating it--

Our card this week is Mary Kathleen Rodriguez, the 5 of Spades from Texas. For more than three decades, the question of who killed 26-year-old Mary Kathleen Rodriguez has hung over the town of West Odessa, Texas. Known as Kathleen to those who loved her, the live-in nanny was found brutally beaten to death inside the home of the couple she worked for. Although the case has changed hands from one detective to another, the original facts of the case remain the same. There was no sign of forced entry, meaning Kathleen almost certainly knew whoever came to the door that night. And the one person who could have been on the other side of that door is still at large. If you lived in or near the 1000 block of Clendenen Avenue in West Odessa, Texas, in December of 1990 and have information regarding the death of Mary Kathleen Rodriguez, please reach out to the Criminal Investigation Identification Department of the Ector County Sheriff's Office at 432-335-3050. You can also submit a tip anonymously to Odessa Crime Stoppers at 432-333-TIPS (8477) or at https://www.333tips.org/. Amy Phillips and guest Angela Quintana catch up, swapping perimenopause stories about hot flashes, sleeplessness, and vivid dreams, and mention Dr. Gilber Lenz's book Menopause Boot Camp. They share quick pop-culture news, including the opening of George Lucas's Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, RHOBH filming updates involving Dorit and PK, Kim Zolciak and Kroy's dating crossover, and a rumor about Bravo casting The Real Housewives of Montana. The episode then recaps Below Deck Med: Captain Sandy's messages with staffing contact Norma, Nathan's back injury and tension with Joe, and a Reality Tea report about an apprehended violence court filing naming Gael Cameron and Nathan Gallagher. They praise Joe's performance as acting bosun, discuss Max's return, critique chef Joy's missteps with guest preferences (including the “pizza” suggestion), and touch on Cooper/Kat's secret romance and onboard mishaps like the smoking tender.
