Robin Ince and Brian Cox are still struggling to decide when a strawberry dies as they trawl through the archive to ponder where we should draw the line between life and death. Katy Brand kicks the debate off with her thoughts on whether strawberries have souls, which leads her to wonder whether it might be possible for people to be resurrected? While it's theoretically possible to bring someone back to life, it's not looking likely any time soon. Instead, Rufus Hound talks us through how he'd commit the perfect murder, right down to the use of a woodchipper to destroy any DNA evidence. Little does he realise that this fingerprint of life gets everywhere, including down comedian Susan Calman's pants. Episodes featured: Series 7: Improbable Science Series 8: What is Death? Series 12: Forensic Science Series 26: How To Commit The Perfect Murder New episodes will be released on Wednesdays, but if you're in the UK, listen to new episodes, a week early, first on BBC Sounds: bbc.in/3K3JzyF Producer: Marijke Peters Executive Producer: Alexandra Feachem

My guest today is a Scottish comedian, television presenter and writer. While studying law at the University of Glasgow, she spent three months in North Carolina working with criminals on death row. After she graduated, she became a corporate lawyer, and soon started performing as a stand-up in the evenings. After seven years, she left the legal profession behind to become a full time comic, winning the Best New Scottish Comedian at the Real Radio Variety Awards in 2009. Since then she has become a fixture on British television and radio, a regular guest on Radio 4 panel shows The News Quiz and I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. In 2018 she was honoured by the University of Glasgow for her work in broadcasting as well as her campaigning on issues related to LGBT rights and mental health. “A lot of comics of my generation play games,” she once said. “To me it's a bigger issue than gaming: it's the art direction, it's the music, it's the expression. It's more than just some guys in their pants shooting things.” Welcome, Susan Calman. Thank you for listening to My Perfect Console. It affects one in six people in England each week, according to UK charity Mind. That's the ratio of people who report experiencing a common mental health problem, such as depression. Whether temporarily down in the dumps, or chronically depressed, many rely on anti-depressants to lift their dejected mood. But, they have a cost – one ex-user told the BBC that they felt they were in a "chemical fog" and were desperate to stop. If medication is a last resort, what alternatives are there when you're feeling truly blue? What about cold-water swimming to combat melancholy? One participant, known as Sarah, took part in the 2016 BBC One series The Doctor Who Gave Up Drugs. She had been taking anti-depressants since the age of 17. Two years after the show, she is off all medication and still swimming – something a recent British Medical Journal report believes may be an effective treatment for depression. Apart from the exercise and companionship of swimmers, the cold water puts the body under stress. With repeated immersions, the body better adapts not just to this physical stress, but mental stress, including the psychological problems of life that lead to low spirits. Susan Calman relies on kindness to brighten her mood. The 43-year-old comedian and author encourages others to use altruism to improve the lives of those around them. "It can be as simple as holding open a door for someone, or giving someone a compliment, or buying someone a packet of crisps while they're feeling down," she tells the BBC. In fact, anything that uplifts. "If we all started to be a bit kinder then maybe we could start seeing the world as a better place. It's really about kindness and then from that, just finding that happiness," she says. Or you could talk about it. Woebot is a chatbot designed to support people dealing with problems by teaching coping strategies. "There's a reason why good therapeutic approaches are conversational. It just asks the right questions so you can figure it out," Alison Darcy, founder of Woebot, tells the BBC. One user, Nick Impson, explained that Woebot relieves the potential trust issues that can occur when talking to a stranger, even a qualified one. Feeling despondent happens to everyone. Susan Calman first saw An Audience with Victoria Wood at the age of 14. It was almost by accident, but by the end of the show she had come to realise what she was destined to be. Yet Susan's career took a curious path to the comedy success that is now hers. She trained as a corporate lawyer and her work took her to the UN in Geneva and Death Row in America. In 2006 she finally gave it all up to follow in the footsteps of her comedy hero, Victoria Wood. In this essay, Susan Calman celebrates Wood's performance and writing skills, marvelling at her precise choice of language, her stage presence and, of course, The Ballad of Barry and Freda. Susan Calman made an impression very quickly with her Edinburgh Festival Fringe shows and was a finalist in the prestigious BBC New Comedy and the So You Think You're Funny Awards. Susan is now one of the country's top stand-ups, beloved by Radio 4 audiences on shows such as The News Quiz and in her own sitcom, Sisters, and her four solo stand-up shows. She has presented Woman's Hour, was a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, is a hugely successful television presenter and has published two books. Kiri's guest is comedian, writer and television presenter Susan Calman. Susan recalls growing up in Glasgow, and leaving home to smash the patriarchy in cherry red dr martens and tank girl boots. Most recently she has been working with a new comedy partner, her dog Homer, who co-starred in “This Flipping Rescue Dog Has Ruined My Life” and “Year of the Dog”. Before Coronavirus put a stop to those sort of shenanigans, Juliet was starting to preview a brand new show, “Found” in which she talks about how she “went to India to discover my Iraqi-Jewish roots and unleashed family feuds, bad gurus, smug sex therapists and furious monkeys. I fell out with my travel companion and I nearly died (twice).” Like our very own Rachel Creeger, Juliet is part of the rotating cast for Sajeela Kershi's award winning show “Immigrant Diaries”.--------------------------------------------------------------------- So those are our guests. In this latest edition of the mini-series, 'Strictly Speaking', Kevin invites you into the conversation around some of the greatest dances, partners and moments throughout his Strictly Come Dancing journey! This week, Kevin continues his conversation with Susan Calman, discussing the most important reasons for appearing on a show like Strictly Come Dancing, and the best way of coming back from failure. You can follow along with Kevin and Susan's story by watching each dance using the links provided in the show notes of this episode! KEY TAKEAWAYS Claudia Winkelman's skills as a host extend far beyond mere presenting. She provides the necessary empathy, and sometimes sympathy, at the right times, and has provided reassurance for many contestants at the right time. The best way to beat the blues, and to give yourself the mental fortitude you need in the wake of failure, is to work even harder. The prospect of leaving the competition is made much easier to take if we know we've done our best, and that we've exceeded our own expectations. Often, the competitive side of the programme is of secondary importance to the taking part, and the fact that contestants are given the opportunity to take part in a world that they might never have experienced. It is right and proper that the finalists are usually the best dancers in the competition. The work and dedication needed in order to lift the Glitterball is extraordinary. BEST MOMENTS 'The smallest thing can change a dance' - 1:40 ‘It's Halloween Week. We're doing Game Of Thrones. We're coming down on a dragon. Subtle and elegant isn't quite what we were going for!' - 3:40 ‘It was full on, didn't stop, absolutely went for it!' - 11:15 ‘I didn't want to win the competition. I just wanted to get as far as I could' - 35:10 ‘I think we would break the internet if we were to do that!' - 55:25 VALUABLE RESOURCES Susan Calman Twitter - https://twitter.com/SusanCalman Week 6 - Foxtrot - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHixvzFV6Ws Week 7 - Jive - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkGK9CGb8YA Week 8 - Tango - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9K12nPumF4 Week 9 - Paso Doble - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vpr_e4TCtI Week 10 - American Smooth - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZgvtyCF3Kg The Kevin Clifton Show - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-kevin-clifton-show/id1475650764 ABOUT THE HOST Kevin Clifton is a professional dancer who has been performing & competing at the highest level for over a decade. In this latest edition of the mini-series, 'Strictly Speaking', Kevin invites you into the conversation around some of the greatest dances, partners and moments throughout his Strictly Come Dancing journey! This week, Kevin talks to fan favourite, Susan Calman, who danced all the way through to Week 10 during the 2017 series of the show, capturing a nation's worth of hearts along the way. You can follow along with Kevin and Susan's story by watching each dance using the links provided in the show notes of this episode! KEY TAKEAWAYS The quarantine's effect on culture is not just seeing sharp falls in revenue for theatres and performers, but also has a knock-on effect upon leisure, travel and accommodation; services that are the backbone of the performing arts. Performers thrive on the affirmation gained by a live audience. Without that level of interaction, performance cannot hope to feel the same. Much of the reason for the show's success relies upon its high production values, its glamour, its bombast and its escapism. This needs to be replicated somehow, even during lockdown. Matching a performer and celebrity to their ideal partner is as much about matching personalities and interests as it is about skill-sets. A personal connection to a dance, or even to a song, can help to enliven a performance. It's the reason why some dances last longer than others in the minds of the audience and of the performers. BEST MOMENTS ‘I've never spent this long with my wife - in my life!' - 7:20 ‘Whatever capabilities your partner had, you brought out the best in them' - 41:55 ‘I'm not sure I would want to quarantine with my dance partner 24 hours a day!' - 21:25 ‘We quickly discovered that both of us are geeks' - 40:30 ‘If I was going to go out, then I wanted to make sure I'd done one of the proper Strictly ballroom dances' - 1:12:50 VALUABLE RESOURCES Susan Calman Twitter - https://twitter.com/SusanCalman Week 1 - Viennese Waltz - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6314-cYILw Week 2 - Charleston - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQlZEGHECcM Week 3 - Samba - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dC7NH7rIvRI Week 4 - Quickstep - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SS3gNk0BvkA Week 5 - Cha Cha Cha - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBvoeekjCTY The Kevin Clifton Show - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-kevin-clifton-show/id1475650764 ABOUT THE HOST Kevin Clifton is a professional dancer who has been performing & competing at the highest level for over a decade. Andrew wondered if there are more than just economic concerns that come into play when the matter is discussed. Stewart hoped that the UK govt will see sense when the time comes and I went off on one.How did you feel about George Osborne coming north and trying to give the natives a good slap-down? We discussed what effects, benefits and possible drawbacks there were to the move.On the subject of threats, did the campaign all get too nasty this week? We had an interesting chat with Stewart about the determination of the official campaign to stay positive and its motivation for that. Finally, the rise of UKIP. What does it all mean for the UK, for England and for the independence debate in Scotland?LINKShttps://twitter.com/mgreenwellhttps://twitter.com/PeatWorrier
