Join us for an episode recorded in August 2024, with Huw Llewellyn, the former Director of the Codification Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs and former Secretary to the International Law Commission (ILC), in a conversation about the evolution of international law. We cover the history of the ILC, its role in the evolution of international law, and its relationship with the UN Sixth Committee. Huw shares insights from his 42-year career, revealing the Commission's approach to codification and progressive development of the law. The episode also explores the historical milestones that shaped international law, from the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 to the League of Nations. Huw talks about how stability and change in international relations is reflected in the work of the ILC, tells us more about the Commission's achievements over 75 years, and new areas of work on the agenda including the topic of sea level rise. We conclude with a personal glimpse into Huw's retirement plans and his recommendations for crime thriller enthusiasts (Lee Child and Martin Walker)! Resources: Ask a Librarian! Send us a Text Message. Here's the fact: more senior executives are coming into credit unions and are insisting on competitive retirement plans, typically a SERP (Supplemental Executive Retirement Plan). On the show today is Kirk Kordeleski, onetime CEO of Bethpage Federal Credit Union, one of the nation's largest, and now a partner with PARC Street, where the focus is on matching executives and credit unions with appropriate SERP packages.  Know this: credit unions cannot attract and retain top executive talent without offering competitive retirement plans.  And today Kordeleski talks about how the SERP marketplace is faring in today's unusual times for credit unions. But as always with a talk with Kordeleski many topics get explored. Tough topics are discussed. For instance: against what institutions should you benchmark your credit union? Probably the answer isn't the ones you think. Hint: think New York Yakees. We also discuss why - probably for the first time ever in credit unions - there's been a number of CEO terminations because the institution isn't holding its own against peers. And there's the matter of AI, how it will trigger significant numbers of credit union employee redundancies, and how credit unions need to handle this. We start with me raising a point I recently discussed with Martin Walker of CURQL, a venture fund focused on fintechs and credit unions.  It's a fact: VC funds see many of their investments fizzle out.  So I asked Walker why it is that credit unions obsess over trying to prevent small losses when such losses are immaterial to the health of the credit union. That conversation happened at a recent CU 2.0 event in Fountain Hills AZ; there's no recording.  But in this show Kordeleski tackles this issue - and it definitely is a credit union issue.Listen up.

These articles are heavily based on the work of brother W H Carter who wrotea book in 1961 called Times and Seasons, plus the works of BiblicalChronologist Rodger C Young and Edwin Thiele.Brother Carter's book Times and Seasons was based mainly on the Jubileecycles – particularly the 70 th and final Jubilee which he believed would usher inthe Kingdom of God on earth. He suggested that 1996/7 could be the occasionof the 70 th Jubilee. That date came and went, and we ask: was he mistakenabout the 70 th Jubilee heralding our Lord's return, or might we review thecalculation of the Jubilee Cycles start date? We here consider compellingevidence that the 70 th Jubilee has not yet come, and when it may be, byretracing the steps of brother Carter's reasoning on this subject.Whenever that longed for day arrives, we hope the following will strengthenour faith and invigorate our walk. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/christadelphians-talk/message

In 2008 journalist Martin Walker published the first of his Bruno, Chief of Police novels. Fifteen books later, the internationally bestselling series continues to delight readers with murder, mystery -- and delicious food. Walker has called the books a love letter to his adopted home of the Périgord region of southwestern France, where he lives in an old farmhouse with his wife, food writer Julia Watson. Indeed, the tales of Bruno take readers into the rich history of the area and its culinary traditions. The character of Benoît Courrèges – nicknamed “Bruno” – loves to cook and is perhaps known as much for transforming the bounty of his garden into elaborate meals as his ability to crack a case. Now Walker and his wife Julia Watson have released a cookbook that brings together many of Bruno's culinary creations. They join Diane this Thanksgiving week to talk about “Bruno's Cookbook: Recipes and Traditions from a French Country Kitchen” and share a couple of Bruno's favorite recipes, which you can find on our website, dianerehm.org.

Ep. 39: France (Bruno, Chief of Police + The Paris Connection)

Hearts & Daggers

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 4, 2023 46:08

Summary: Bienvenue à Coeurs et Poignards, where today we'll be armchair traveling to France for the next episode in our Summer Jetset Series! Both Holly and Devin have spent quality time in the country already; Devin is francophone and has lived in both Paris and Bordeaux, and Holly visited the south of France on her honeymoon (on top of other visits!). They agree that French culture resonates with their lifestyles, values, and dreams - passion, great food, relaxed lifestyle, art and millions of dead bodies buried in the Catacombs.  Topics Discussed: The Dagger (5:21): Holly discussed Bruno, Chief of Police by Martin Walker, the first book in a delightful, 21-book murder mystery series following Benoît "Bruno" Courrèges as he dines, delves, and detects in the fictional southwestern French town of Saint Dénis. Holly's key takeaways were: While Bruno is typically peaceful (never wears his gun, never arrests anyone, lives in a restored shepherd's cottage), a murder has disrupted the tranquility of St. Dénis; a North African man is found dead with a swastika carved into his chest. Walker then explores the role of police in small, tight-knit communities and corruption that extends into an international community.  While murder is a focal point of the book (obviously) so is the outstanding cuisine of France. Replete with descriptions of local dishes, ingredients, and cooking techniques, the novel becomes vivid by engaging all five senses and providing the reader an opportunity to explore the impact of gastronomy on the culture and local economy.  Ultimately this novel and the subsequent series explores the charm and idyllic nature of rural communities in southern France. The identity, sense of belonging, and prejudices of folks in the tiny town unveil to the reader the tensions we may all encounter; tradition vs. modernity, diversity vs. homogeneity, globalization vs. local culture.  The Heart (17:36): Devin discussed The Paris Connection by Lorraine Brown, a novel that follows protagonist Hannah as she is separated from her boyfriend, Simon, on an overnight train destined for Amsterdam but half of which splits off (with Hannah in the wrong section) to Paris. What follows is a day of hijinks, self-discovery, and the intrigue of new connections. Devin's key takeaways were: When Hannah finds herself in Paris with no luggage, phone charger, and very little money, she ends up relying on the generosity of a disgruntled (and attractive) parisian man named Léo. In spite of her hesitation and negative perception of Léo at the start, Hannah soon finds herself on the back of his moped experiencing Paris in a way she never has before. With a spice rating of “negative chili peppers,” this novel strikes Devin more as a self-discovery, almost coming-of-age story than a true romance. Brown created an amazing premise with one real challenge; the timeframe in which Hannah and Léo need to figure it out and fall in love. Almost too reliant on the “love at first sight” (in French, coup de foudre i.e. lightning strike) trope, the reader misses out on the joy of a slower, more organic evolution of chemistry between the main pairing. Ultimately, it is the vivid and detailed tour around the key neighborhoods of Paris that keep the reader beside Hannah through this novel; Brown animates the city in all its glory, giving proper attention to the architecture, character, cuisine, and atmosphere of the iconic City of Lights.  Hot On the Shelf (35:13): Holly: Sun Damage by Sabine Durrant Devin: The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Introducing thriller author Cate Quinn Jenny Wheeler: Hello there Cate, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Cate Quinn: Hi, Jenny. Thanks so much for having me. Cate Quinn - Thriller author Jenny Wheeler: You write contemporary thrillers and historical thrillers. The historicals are under a slightly different name, C S Quinn, and we'll touch on those towards the end of our show, but today we are focusing on two high concept, domestic thrillers that you've recently published – Blood Sisters and Black Widows – both with highly original concepts. Blood Sisters, which I think is the most recent, is set in an Australian Outback town. Two tourists, two backpackers, turn up in this little town, which is a scratch in the desert, Dead Tree Creek. More or less simultaneous with their arrival somebody is gruesomely murdered and the town turns their suspicion to these two girls and thinks they must be responsible. The town came through really strongly, and first of all I wondered, have you had personal experience of Outback towns? Cate Quinn: Yes,

Martin Walker is one of the most listened to shows on Binge Reading of all times, so we are delighted to have him back discussing his latest book, To Kill a Troubadour. It's number 15 in the Bruno Perigord police chief series, highly popular all over the place, particularly in Germany. When a musician's new song hits a political nerve, he finds himself in the crosshairs of Spanish Nationalists' ire, and it's up to Bruno to track down the extremists who seem to be ready to take deadly measures. Another delightful installment of the internationally acclaimed series featuring Bruno, Chief of Police. But now, here's Martin. Jenny Wheeler: Welcome back, Martin. It's so good to have you on the show again. Martin Walker: It's good to be back with you, Jenny. Jenny Wheeler: We're talking about To Kill a Troubador, which is number 15 in your Perigord Bruno the Police Chief series. I particularly loved this one because you have such an interesting mix of things going on in the story. It's a combination of the French provincial life that's so popular with your readers, but there is also that edge of both history and contemporary politics in it. We've got Russian cyber-attacks, we've got some of the French medieval history coming into it, and I wondered with the cyber-attack part of it in particular, we know from your earlier podcast interview with us that you have had a very illustrious career as a diplomatic correspondent for top newspapers. Did those diplomatic contacts and the people you met over that period of your life help with your research on the cyber-attack aspects of this book? Martin Walker: Yes, very much so. I have various old contacts who are with offices like GCHQ in Britain and the NSA in America. I even gave a lecture at the NSA at one point on international politics, and so I keep in touch with old chums. I try and keep in touch with my old friends in Moscow, some of whom have now left because of opposition to the war in Ukraine. But yes, most of my life I was in journalism, and you meet an awful lot of interesting characters around the world through journalism. The other thing is the old Fleet Street motto holds good – expert knowledge is just a phone call away. Jenny Wheeler: That's great. The rise of right wing extremism is an inherent part of this story, but also there is the medieval aspect with the Occitan culture being promoted by various interest groups. One of the key characters in that right wing extremism is this woman, Africa, who appears right through the story, a mysterious figure. We've had a little bit of a conversation off camera because the edition I read of your book didn't have an author acknowledgement section, and I was very curious as to whether Africa was a real person or entirely made up. We have just had a little chat about that off air and you've explained that she is definitely a real person. Tell us about her role in the story and also what she actually achieved in real life. Martin Walker: Well, there was a woman called África de las Heras who was a Spanish communist during the Spanish Civil War, born to quite a wealthy, prosperous family. At the end of the war when the Republican left wing side was defeated and Franco took over, she was steered back to Moscow by the NKVD figure there, which is the modern KGB, if you like. She became a full-time KGB official and had an extraordinary career. She was used by the Red Army in World War II to coordinate partisan activity around the Blue Division, which was the Spanish division of volunteers that Franco sent to the Eastern front to fight on the side of the Nazis. She had a distinguished career with that. She got several medals for it. She then went off to South America where she was the person who warned the Russians that the Bay of Pigs invasion was to be launched in 1961. She was told to marry the head of the KGB in South America, based in Argentina. He was a Yugoslav,
