September 18, 2016 National Back to Church Sunday, September 18, 2016 Now’s the Time Now’s The Time 1 Timothy 2:3-6 Synopsis: Today we are celebrating Michael Burleson and Marley’s safe return from four-week long mission trip to Benin. They have some amazing stories to tell about the good things God is doing. Of course, there is much more to be done. My sermon text today is from s1 Timothy 2:1-7, but before I get to that text I will be reading from Jeremiah 8:20-9:1. It is just one of Jeremiah’s laments. In this portion of Scripture, you will hear the echoes of the cries of the people which set the framework for his weeping. I hope that Jeremiah’s lament will set the context for the reading of the text. Paul’s opening word to Timothy and for the church today is “pray for all people.” It is a sincere pray believers are to offer to God. It is a humble prayer that is “good and pleases God our Savior.” We don’t have to convince God of people’s need to be saved. We just need to catch up with the heart of God in the matter knowing that Jesus Christ has already paid the price of reconciliation. Paul knew the role God had laid out for him to play in the ongoing work of reconciliation. He felt no need to exaggerate that role. What he had to do was act on it. “Now’s the Time!” for believers to act on it too. Now’s the time to weep and mourn for those in life who may be coming to the end of their summer and yet are not saved. Now’s the time for all those who are not saved to respond to what God in Christ Jesus is telling them they need to do. Now’s the Time! Text (NLT): Jeremiah 8:20-9:1; 1 Timothy 2:1-7; Philippians 2:3-4 NLT Scripture Reading: Psalm 113:1-3
July 31, 2016 Commissioning of Traveling Mercy Ministries August 3 – September 6 Driven by the Wind Colossians 3:1-4 Synopsis: Today we are commissioning Rev. Michael Burleson and his daughter Marley for their Traveling Mercy Ministries mission trip to Benin, Africa. Michael is a registered nurse and will be working in rural clinics with a local ministry. He and Marley will also be leading in worship services as they have opportunity and conducting church leadership classes. In my opening text the Apostle Paul admonishes believers to “set your heart on what is in heaven” (Colossians 3:1, CEV). Believers are to set a course for their life that leads toward home. It is how believers are to make since of this life. It is very easy to get side tracked in this world in which we live. The Preacher or Teacher in Ecclesiastes calls them “vanities.” (Ecclesiastes 1:2) He describes them as “chasing after the wind.” (v. 14). Jesus told a parable of a man who built bigger barns to hold his increase, but died in the night leaving everything he worked for to someone else. Wind is one of those interesting words in both Hebrew and Greek. According to the context the word could be translated wind, breath or spirit. The Preacher in Ecclesiastes defines vanity as “chasing after the wind.” There is a big difference between chasing after the wind and being driven by the wind. One will leave a person’s hands empty at the end of life. The other will fill one’s existence with the life of God. That is why believers are to be driven by the Spirit of God with a course set toward their eternal home. Text: Colossians 3:1-4, CEV; Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14, NRSV; Luke 12:13-21, CEV; Ecclesiastes 2:18-23, NIV Scripture Reading: Psalm 107:1-9

November 18, 2012 Miracles of Stewardship Series Thanks Offerings Don’t Stop With a Word The Remembrance Synopsis: Our service today draws us to the Lord’s Table for a time of Remembrance. We are a congregation drawn again and again to this special service to acknowledge our gratitude to God the Father for sending the Son, to Jesus who gave Himself for us and to the Holy Spirit who continues to move us forward in faith. There were ten lepers pleading with Jesus for healing. All were healed, but only one returned to give thanks and he was a Samaritan. Believers everywhere want to be counted with that one who represents all of us outcasts who have been healed and allowed to come to Jesus. We bow at the Table of Remembrance, acknowledging our sins and giving thanks again and again for our salvation. Our thanks offerings only start with a word because a word is never enough. As we gather at the Lord’s Table I invite you to listen carefully as Scott Waisner and Michael Burleson lead us inFor This We Give Thanks. Their words will remind us of the many names we use to remember why we are so thankful.
