American astrophysicist, author, and science communicator
Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, a host of the StarTalk Radio podcasts, one of the authors of A Brief Welcome to the Universe: A Pocket-Sized Tour (Princeton University Press, 2021), and the author of Cosmic Queries: StarTalk's Guide to Who We Are, How We Got Here, and Where We're Going (National Geographic, 2021), talks about space travel and the need for science education.
About Paul Shapiro: Paul Shapiro lives in Sacramento, California with his wife Toni Okamoto Shapiro, author and founder of Plant-Based on a Budget, and their very friendly pitbull, Eddie. Paul is the author of the national bestseller Clean Meat: How Growing Meat Without Animals Will Revolutionize Dinner and the World (published by Simon & Schuster's Gallery Books in 2018). He's also the CEO of The Better Meat Co., a four-time TEDx speaker, the host of the Business for Good Podcast, and a long-time leader in food sustainability. Paul is an authority figure on food and agricultural sustainability. He is a regular podcast guest and has been invited on hundreds of news outlets, including StarTalk Radio with Neil deGrasse Tyson, The Rich Roll Podcast, and CNN. He's also published hundreds of articles ranging from daily newspapers such as The Washington Post to pop-sci publications like Scientific American as well as magazines like FORTUNE and academic journals. What We Discuss In This Episode: In this episode, we discuss at length the question of this decade – food and agricultural sustainability. Since there's so much discussion around our meat sources, GMO sources, etc., this is a very timely interview where Paul discusses his exciting business and how we can eat from better sources, and even how to recognize what that meat source is. We discuss why anyone would want to grow real meat from animal cells, as well as the difference between plant-based burgers and meat grown from cells. Paul's company, The Better Meat Co., uses microbial fermentation to grow meat-like foods. It may sound new to you, but Paul does an excellent job of discussing how that is different from making plant-based meat in today's market. This is a fascinating subject, and of course, Paul's pit bull, Eddie gets several mentions throughout the podcast. If this feels like a mystery to you, then listen in, and let Paul break it down for you. Text LEARNERS to 44222 for more... Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12 https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 Liz Wiseman is the New York Times bestseller author of Multipliers, Rookie Smarts, and most recently Impact Players. She is the CEO of the Wiseman Group, a leadership research and development firm. Some of her recent clients include Apple, Disney, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Nike, Tesla, and Twitter. Liz has been listed on the Thinkers50 ranking and named one of the top 10 leadership thinkers in the world. Notes: Habits of high impact players: Learn the game Play where they are needed Play with passion Impact players have a good internal locus of control. They believe they have agency in their life. They believe they are in charge of their life. Liz said, “You have a lot more power than you might think you have.” Neil deGrasse Tyson said, “what you know is not as important as what you think.” If you aspire to have greater influence, start thinking like an impact player…don't just use the playbook. Adopt the impact player mentality as your ethos. Many leaders commented how much they learned thru the process of answering questions. Teaching others can be one of the greatest tools for learning in the world... Seeking feedback and guidance versus seeking validation. Impact players don't need validation. They crave feedback and guidance so they can continually improve. Say less: Play your chips wisely - Before an important meeting, give yourself a budget of poker chips where each chip represents a comment or contribution to the meeting. Be relevant, be evidence-based, be unique and additive, be succinct. Building credibility with leaders and stakeholders: Some credibility killers? Waiting for managers to tell you what to do, ignoring the bigger picture, tell your manager it's not your job. Some credibility builders? Doing things without being asked, anticipating problems, and having a plan. Instead of following your passion… Be useful. Make a name for yourself by running towards the problems and solving them. Make your boss's life easier. Be useful. Work on what's important for the people you work for… “The Diminisher is a Micromanager who jumps in and out. The Multiplier is an Investor who gives others ownership and full accountability.” “Multipliers invoke each person's unique intelligence and create an atmosphere of genius—innovation, productive effort, and collective intelligence.” “It isn't how much you know that matters. What matters is how much access you have to what other people know. It isn't just how intelligent your team members are; it is how much of that intelligence you can draw out and put to use.” “Multipliers aren't “feel-good” managers. They look into people and find capability, and they want to access all of it. They utilize people to their fullest. They see a lot, so they expect a lot.” “The highest quality of thinking cannot emerge without learning. Learning can't happen without mistakes.” What do Impact Players do? While others do their job, Impact Players figure out the real job to be done. While others wait for direction, Impact Players step up and lead. While others escalate problems, Impact Players move things across the finish line. While others attempt to minimize change, Impact Players are learning and adapting to change. While others add to the load, the Impact Players make heavy demands feel lighter. Some think you become great on the big stage under the bright lights. But the light only reveals the work you did in the dark. —Jeff Bajenaru An overarching idea: I can be of service and solve problems. The slogan from Kaiser Sand & Gravel; “Find a need and fill it.”

I first met Neil deGrasse Tyson at a bug eating event at the Museum of Natural History when he was munching on a fried tarantula. You may remember Tyson as the host of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey. That was the continuation of a television series that originally starred Carl Sagan, another well-known astrophysicist. Tyson is also the Director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York and he's written more than 17 books. The latest is called A Brief Welcome to the Universe. But when you're talking to Neil deGrasse Tyson, as you'll discover, nothing is brief. “Now What?” is produced with the help of Steve Zimmer, Annika Hoiem and Alex Wolfe. Audio production is by Nick Ciavatta.

Simulation theory is the theory that we are all living in a simulation. There is a higher being that is controlling us like "The Sims" and we have no control of our ethics and free will. What if we are living in a multiverse? What if the matrix is real? Famous great minds like Stephen Hawking and Neil deGrasse Tyson mostly believe in it. Join your hosts Jason Wrobel & Whitney Lauritsen as they take a deep dive into discovering what's real. Embrace science fiction and ask what if the universe is coded like a computer. What if deja vu is a result of having multiple realities? Listen to the conversation as Jason and Whitney try to find the glitch in the matrix.Love the show? In the past, The Remnant has hosted prominent politicians, scholars, and media personalities. But none of them have made Jonah as excited as today's guest: Nathan Allebach, manager of the Steak-umm Twitter account. In a conversation laden with meat-related puns, Jonah and Nathan take a deep dive into the bizarre world of social media, where fast food brands often offer greater intellectual nuance than most political commentators. Neil deGrasse Tyson, online abuse, and the origins of Nathan's glorious enterprise are all discussed, as Jonah examines whether we'd be better off without the internet. At the end of it all, one vital hot-button question remains unanswered: Are hot dogs sandwiches?
