The most alive wisdom often waits at the edge where things end. We step onto the threshold between astrology's eighth and ninth houses with Dr. Travis Elliott, a naturopath who traded protocols for presence and found his way into Asclepian dream healing, plant medicines, and the kind of listening that lets the body speak. This conversation travels from Santa Fe's Living Astrologies conference to the old temples where snakes curled at our feet, and into the myths where Asclepius learns from Chiron, Coronis vanishes into smoke, and Medusa's two vials test how far we'll go to outwit death. We talk about what happens when healthcare stops treating people like problems and starts treating symptoms as messages. Travis shares how an image can surface in the room—a felt priority that guides the next step—and how clients reclaim agency when they learn to sit with what hurts. Along the way, we unpack the eighth house as a place of composting and grief, the ninth house as the clear sky of meaning, and Ophiuchus as the healer who stands between them. We look at diurnal motion versus zodiacal motion, Telesphorus as the small herald of completion, and the moment when pushing against death breaks the order that keeps life and underworld in balance.Underneath the astrology is a simple invitation: stay with the darkness until it's done with you, then rise with meaning that is yours. If you've been craving a more soulful healthcare—one that respects intuition, the feminine, and the earth's timing—this is a map back to that remembering. Listen, share it with a friend who needs permission to slow down, and if it resonates, subscribe and leave a review so more people can find the work. *The above blurb was produced by Buzzsprout's AI.Join the Newsletter! In this episode I debunk the recurring media claim that your zodiac sign has changed by explaining the 2,000-year history of why western astrologers have deliberately used the tropical zodiac. Every few years, headlines circulate claiming that your zodiac sign has changed due to the precession of the equinoxes. Following a recent New York Times article making this claim, I decided to set the record straight. In this episode of The Astrology Podcast, I explain the history behind this recurring narrative and demonstrate why these claims are misleading. We'll explore the difference between the three zodiacs (constellational, sidereal, and tropical) and show how Western astrologers, starting with Claudius Ptolemy nearly 2,000 years ago, made a deliberate and conscious choice to use the tropical zodiac, which is aligned with the seasons, not the constellations. This is not a recent mistake or discovery; it's a foundational principle of the Western astrological tradition that has been understood for centuries by history's most prominent astrologers and astronomers. We will also touch on the issue of the so-called 13th sign, Ophiuchus, and why it doesn't apply to the system most Western astrologers use. My goal is to clarify the history so that you can better understand why your zodiac sign has not changed and feel more equipped to respond to these arguments. The Blue Danube has been performed for some pretty lofty audiences – kings and queens, emperors and empresses, presidents and prime ministers. But a performance earlier this year topped them all: it was aimed at the stars. The waltz was composed by Johann Strauss II, who was born 200 years ago today. His birthday was one of the motivations for the performance. The other was the 50th anniversary of ESA – the European Space Agency. So the broadcast was mostly symbolic – not a real attempt to contact other civilizations. The waltz was performed by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in late May. It was transmitted to space by one of ESA’s tracking stations. The waltz was beamed toward Voyager 1. It’s the most-distant working spacecraft in history – more than 15 billion miles from Earth – so far that it took 23 hours for the waltz to reach it. Voyager carries a golden phonograph record inscribed with several musical works – but not the Strauss waltz. Voyager is passing through Ophiuchus, near the constellation’s brightest star, Rasalhague. It’s about half way up in the west-southwest at nightfall, and it’s easy to see. It’s a bit more than 48 light-years away. So if anyone there happens to point a radio telescope toward Earth in late 2073, perhaps they’ll hear the strains of The Blue Danube waltzing through the galaxy. Script by Damond Benningfield

We welcome back in Prof. Jon F. White from Crecganford to discuss the historic mythological evoluation of dragons. When did dragons grow into Smog from basically an oversized winged lizard? We trace the stories of the past and try to apply them to arenas we all recognize. How did serpents turn into dragons? But many of these serpents were enormous. Size of the primordial waters of the universe big. Encircling the world big. Making up all the bodies of water on Earth big. A beast that a hero and/or god needed to slay big. Is the snake is Eden related? Is my latest latest latest obsession - Ophiuchus - related? Jon entertains some of my notions. He dispells some others. And he sticks to the evidence that research supports. Wait...what about fire? We got that.

StarDate Podcast

Many “open” star clusters arch high overhead on summer nights. They’re lined up along the glowing band of the Milky Way – the outline of our home galaxy. Each cluster is a family of stars – from a few dozen to a thousand or more. But open clusters don’t stay together for long. Their stars eventually spread out, so the cluster disappears. Some families begin to spread out early – before many of their stars are even fully formed. One recently discovered example is called Ophion. It consists of more than a thousand stars. Astronomers found the group by analyzing data from Gaia, a space telescope. They looked through observations of more than 200 million stars. Then they narrowed their search to stars that are cooler than the Sun, and no more than 20 million years old. And Ophion just popped out. The stars form a giant clump that’s centered about 650 light-years away. But all of its members are going their own way. So they don’t form an obvious “cluster” – a tight grouping that’s easy to pick out. Ophion is on the edge of a region that’s given birth to many thousands of stars. Exploding stars in that region – or within Ophion itself – might have scattered the stars like bowling pins, keeping the family from sticking together. Ophion is near the middle of Ophiuchus, which is well up in the south-southwest at nightfall. You can see many clusters there – but not a hint of the ill-fated Ophion. Script by Damond Benningfield

For a few weeks in the spring of 1764, Charles Messier was a star-cluster-discovering machine. He found five globular clusters in Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer. He cataloged them as Messier 9, 10, 12, 14, and 19. Messier wasn’t interested in the clusters – or even in the stars. Instead, he was looking for comets. At the time, finding a comet was a way to fame and fortune. Kings offered prizes to those who found comets. And comets were named for their discoverers – a bit of immortality. But Messier and others kept coming across fuzzy objects that resembled comets. Figuring out if they really were comets wasted time. So the French astronomer decided to compile a catalog of these distractions. He logged more than a hundred objects. They included star clusters, galaxies, stellar nurseries, and the final gasps of dying stars. Today, Messier’s list is the most famous of all astronomical catalogs. The globular clusters all look about the same. They’re tight balls of stars. Today, we know that the typical globular contains a hundred thousand stars or more. And they’re among the oldest residents of the Milky Way – more than 10 billion years old. Ophiuchus is a large constellation that stands well up in the southern sky at nightfall. Messier’s globulars are scattered across it. They’re all visible through binoculars – just don’t mistake them for comets. Script by Damond Benningfield

Barnard 68 is one of the darkest objects in our section of the galaxy. It’s a small cloud that absorbs the light of the stars behind it, so it looks like a dark “hole” in the Milky Way. Before long, though, that void may shine with the warmth of newly forming stars. Barnard 68 is a Bok globule – a small, dark sphere of gas and dust. It’s about 500 light-years away, half a light-year wide, and about three times the mass of the Sun. It’s part of a complex of dark clouds that stands in front of the glowing band of the Milky Way. Barnard 68 is so dark because it’s quite cold – temperatures at its center are close to absolute zero. But that may be about to change. The globule has been stable for millions of years. But there’s evidence that it’s recently been hit by a cosmic “bullet” – a smaller clump of gas and dust. That appears to be causing Barnard 68 to collapse. As it collapses, the cloud will get denser and hotter, and perhaps split into several smaller clumps. Within a few hundred thousand years, the clumps could be well on their way to becoming new stars – glowing balls of gas born from a dark “hole” in the Milky Way. Barnard 68 is in Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer, which is in the southern sky at nightfall. The Milky Way runs through a corner of the constellation. Several clouds darken the Milky Way – birthplaces of future stars. Script by Damond Benningfield

The gods of ancient Greece had complicated relationships. As an example, consider Ophiuchus. He’s represented by a constellation that passes across the southern sky on summer evenings. The constellation represented Asclepius, the god of medicine and the son of the god Apollo. In one version of the story, Asclepius killed a snake with his staff. But another snake dropped some herbs on the dead one, bringing it back to life. Asclepius then used those herbs to resurrect the son of King Minos. Business was so good for Asclepius that fewer people were entering the underworld. So Hades, the god of the underworld, complained to Zeus, the king of the gods. Zeus then killed Asclepius with a lightning bolt. But that didn’t sit well with Apollo. To appease him, Zeus placed Asclepius in the sky. Today, those stars are known as Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer. He’s depicted with a snake wrapped around his waist. And that’s why the symbol for modern medicine is a pair of snakes wrapped around a staff – it represents the story of Ophiuchus. Look for the serpent bearer high in the south as night falls. Its stars are faint. Under a dark sky, though, they form a pattern that resembles a coffee urn. It stands upright in early evening, but lies on its side later on. The constellation’s brightest star is at the top of the coffee pot – the “head of the serpent bearer.” More about Ophiuchus tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

Astronomers have been searching for planets around one of our closest neighbor stars for decades. And they’ve reported the discovery of several. But the reports have come to naught – until now. Earlier this year, a team confirmed the presence of four planets – all of them smaller than Earth. Barnard’s Star is six light-years away. Only the three stars of the Alpha Centauri system are closer. The star is much smaller and less massive than the Sun, and less than one percent as bright. In fact, it’s so faint that it wasn’t discovered until a little more than a century ago. Barnard’s Star is ancient – probably twice the age of the Sun or older. So if it has planets, there’s been plenty of time for life to take hold. That’s made finding planets a high priority. Last year, a team of astronomers confirmed one planet, and said there might be three more. All of those were confirmed in March. None of the planets is more than a third the mass of Earth. And they’re so close in that they orbit the star in a week or less. So even though Barnard’s Star is faint, the planets are all too hot to provide comfortable conditions for life. Barnard’s Star is in Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer. The constellation stretches across the east and southeast in early evening, and stands high in the south later on. But Barnard’s Star is too faint to see without a telescope. We’ll have more about exoplanets tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

Black holes are creeping up on us. A space telescope has discovered several black holes in recent years that are much closer than any found before. The closest is just 1,560 light-years away – right in our cosmic back yard. The black hole is a member of a binary system known as Gaia BH1. Gaia is a European space telescope that’s been looking at more than a billion stars. It’s plotting the distances to those stars with amazing accuracy. And that’s how it found BH1. Gaia was watching a star that’s a near-twin to the Sun. But the star showed a big “wiggle” – it was being pulled by the gravity of an unseen companion. Calculations showed that the companion is almost 10 times the mass of the Sun, but it produces no energy. That means the companion must be a black hole. The star and black hole are separated by a little more than the distance from Earth to the Sun. That’s too far for the black hole to pull gas from the star. So the black hole is dormant – it’s not feeding on anything. Eventually, though, the star will reach the end of its prime phase of life. It will swell to dozens of times its current diameter. That should allow the black hole to roar to life – as it feasts on a dying companion. Gaia BH1 is in Ophiuchus. The serpent bearer is high in the south at first light. Its outline looks like a giant coffee urn. BH1 is inside the urn – a black hole lurking close to Earth. Script by Damond Benningfield

There's also a comet (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) on its way and sighted in the area of the constellation Ophiuchus, which looks like a man holding a snake – it's also referred to as the “Dragon Slayer.” Another recent discovery is a new mini-moon circling our planet and will continue hanging out in our skies until Thanksgiving week. SpaceTime Series 27 Episode 121*A New Planet Discovered Orbiting Barnard's StarAstronomers have discovered a new exoplanet orbiting Barnard's Star, the closest single star to the Sun. This newly found planet, Barnard b, has about half the mass of Earth and completes an orbit around its host star every three Earth days. Located 5.96 light-years away, Barnard's Star is a small red dwarf in the constellation Ophiuchus. The discovery was made using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope and has sparked interest due to its low mass and proximity to its star. The study also hints at the existence of three more potential exoplanets in the system, although additional observations are needed for confirmation.*ESA's Hera Mission LaunchThe European Space Agency's Hera mission is set to launch, aimed at exploring the aftermath of NASA's DART mission impact on the asteroid Dimorphos. The mission will provide detailed analysis of the impact site and the asteroid's composition, mass, and structural changes. Hera will also deploy two cubesats, Milani and Juventus, to perform close-up observations and experiments. The mission is crucial for understanding how to protect Earth from potential asteroid threats in the future.*Spectacular Annular Solar EclipseA stunning annular solar eclipse, known as a "ring of fire," has been witnessed by people across the eastern and southern Pacific, as well as parts of South America. The eclipse, which occurs when the Moon is slightly further from Earth, left a bright ring of sunlight visible around the Moon's silhouette. The event was best viewed from Easter Island and parts of Argentina and Chile, with partial views seen in other regions including Bolivia, Peru, and New Zealand.00:00:00 - This is spacetime series 27, episode 121, for broadcasts on 7 October 202400:00:47 - Astronomers have discovered a planet orbiting Barnard star, the closest single00:04:48 - European Space Agency's Hera planetary defence mission slated for launch today00:08:40 - NASA's Dart spacecraft crashed into the dimorphos asteroid in 202200:12:11 - The people of the east and South Pacific and South America witnessed an annual solar eclipse00:14:07 - Scientists have developed a new drug delivery system for type two diabetes00:17:02 - Women are turning to psychics to find out if their husbands are cheatingwww.spacetimewithstuartgary.comwww.bitesz.com

Mind the Shift
133. The Thirteenth Sign is a Portal – Isaac Rodriguez

Mind the Shift

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 25, 2024 78:03

Isaac Rodriguez discovered, to his big surprise, that mainstream astrologers never really look up at the sky. As John Lash explained in an earlier episode, tropical (mainstream) astrology isn't really about the stars. The signs are merely named after star constellations that approximately corresponded with the sectors of the signs a few thousand years ago. Isaac Rodriguez learned about sidereal astrology, the kind that goes by the actual star constellations and takes their apparent movement in the sky into account. With the precession of the equinoxes, the positions of the constellations constantly move – or seem to move, from earth's viewpoint. If sidereal astrology were to replace tropical astrology as it is used today, the painful problem for people who are into this would be that their birth chart would be completely wrong. “I made up a term for this, ‘astrology collapse disorder'”, says Isaac. But the two models seem to work on different levels. A higher and a lower octave, if you will. Or, Isaac claims, in the divine reality (sidereal) and in a false matrix (tropical). “I see it like this: Tropical keeps you human, sidereal makes you celestial.” The tropical model keeps us in what the Hindus call samsara, the karmic cycle. “And if we stick to that, we will probably stay in the loop longer than if we study sidereal, which is the way to break the cycle.” The Church condemned real astrology but then allowed an astrology that is like a broken clock, according to Isaac. “So we're living in a false matrix. Tropical astrology is about the very human issues, my love life, my job, my relations, whereas sidereal astrology is about ‘show me my deepest, darkest shadows, show me all, I need to get out of here'.” Tropical astrology has twelve signs. The thirteenth sign is crucial in understanding how to get the “broken clock” to work again. It is a constellation called Ophiuchus, which means the serpent-bearer. In ancient cultures it was associated with a serpent of some kind, like the plumed serpent in Mesoamerican traditions. And it is located right at the Galactic center, where there is a supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A . The Maya called it Xibalba, the crossing. This point was pivotal also to the Gnostics. This is where they located Pleroma, from where Sophia and Christos came. “Could it be that we have a connection to another world through that point? We have to pay attention to that part of the sky”, says Isaac. He tells about the many pieces of evidence for the importance of this point in the universe that you can find in Egyptian temples. Some groups have carried the truth about our immortality and our divine origin through history, and been persecuted for that. But why don't we all know this? Because we have amnesia. There is probably a purpose for that. We are supposed to learn certain things through the illusion of separation and time. But some people who possess the truth hide it for nefarious purposes, Isaac believes. “The symbolism of the age of Pisces is separation from source. The separated parts are supposed to merge through matter, through the physical. But it has also created the opportunity for manipulation and brainwash.” Isaac's website The documentary Code 12 Isaac's Youtube channel Isaac's Instagram

New Age religion is a lot more than a scheme to sell books and crystals, it's a belief that a new age of enlightenment is dawning--or did so centuries ago--or is centuries away. It might be something to fear, or something to celebrate.Astrology is all trash, and we're happy to point out the best reasons why. But, it can also be wholesome entertainment. The people who make your star charts don't care about what's actually happening in the sky, the signs haven't been adjusted to reflect the reality of our sky for thousands of years, and the even the best minds vary wildly on the meanings of things. Most astrologers won't even admit that the constellation Ophiuchus is now a more relevant part of the sun's path than Scorpio.  Despite the Christian mainstream opinion that occultism and witchcraft are incompatible with their faith (a claim that is unreasonable, to say the least) a massive chunk of American Christians are into New Age ideas that come from these occult teachings. Even atheists buy into the New Age, approximately one in five in the United States of America. In spite of ridiculous claims made by Paul le Cour and others, this movement has brought some interesting diversity to the global religious landscape, and influenced the world's secular culture in odd ways, too.All this and more....  Support us on Patreon or you can get our merch at Spreadshop. Join the Community on Discord. Learn more great religion factoids on Facebook and Instagram.

Most people keep their hands as far from snakes as possible. But handling a snake was the job for the mythological serpent bearer. He's represented in the stars as the constellation Ophiuchus, which is in the east and southeast at nightfall. The head of the snake is above Ophiuchus, with its tail below. In one story, the constellation represented a serpent god. In another, it was a god wrestling with a snake. And in still another, it was an ancient healer who learned the secret of life by watching snakes. His left hand — the one holding the snake's head — is represented by two stars: Yed Prior, which leads the way across the sky, and Yed Posterior. In our sky, the stars are separated by less than the width of your finger held at arm's length. But they're not related. One is a little more than a hundred light-years away, while the other is about 160 light-years. Both stars are more massive than the Sun. So even though they're much younger than the Sun, they've already moved past the prime of life. They've burned through the hydrogen fuel in their cores. That's caused their outer layers to expand to giant proportions. So they're many times bigger and brighter than the Sun. Yed Prior and Yed Posterior are about a quarter of the way up the east-southeastern sky at nightfall, with Yed Prior slightly higher. Under even moderately dark skies, they're easy to see — outlining the hand of the serpent bearer. Script by Damond Benningfield

The giant families of stars known as globular clusters are like carnival rides: They do a lot of bobbing up and down. And they may lose a bit of themselves with every gyration. An example is the cluster Messier 12. It's probably more than 16,000 light-years from Earth. It contains a couple of hundred thousand stars, all packed into a ball about 75 light-years across. That means the stars are much closer together than the stars in our part of the galaxy. Like all globulars, M12 travels at an angle to the Milky Way's disk. So it periodically passes through the disk. During each pass, the gravity of the disk may pull away some of the stars on the outskirts of M12. A study a couple of decades ago found a lack of lower-mass stars in the cluster. Heavier stars tend to congregate in a cluster's core, where they're held fast by the gravity of the other stars around them. Less-massive stars migrate to the outskirts, where they'd be easy to pull away. Today, M12 contains about 200,000 stars. But it could have lost several times that number over its 13-billion-year lifetime. So as many as a million of the cluster's stars might now be orbiting the center of the galaxy on their own — pulled away from their birthplace. Messier 12 is in Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer, which is in the east and southeast at nightfall. But you need a telescope to see this possibly vanishing cluster of stars. The head of the serpent slithers into the early evening sky this month, with its tail twisting along a bit later. Serpens is the only constellation that's split apart. The two halves are separated by Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer. The snake's head rises first. It's in the east and southeast at nightfall, marked by a serpentine trail of faint stars. The tail, which is below Ophiuchus, climbs into view about an hour later. The brightest of the stars of Serpens is Unukalhai — an Arabic name that means “the serpent's neck.” The star also is known as Alpha Serpentis, indicating its ranking as the constellation's leading light. The star is in the final stages of life. It converted the hydrogen fuel in its core to helium, causing the core to shrink and get hotter. That triggered the next round of nuclear reactions, with the helium being converted to carbon and oxygen. The changes in the core have caused the star's outer layers to puff up like a balloon. That's made the star about 14 times wider than the Sun. The expansion also made the star's surface much cooler, so it shines yellow-orange. In time, all the reactions in the star's core will stop, and the outer layers will puff out into space. For a while, that expanding cloud will form a colorful bubble. As the bubble cools and dissipates, though, only the star's dead core will remain — depriving the serpent of its bright neck. More about the serpent tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

One of the closest of the Milky Way's globular star clusters is near the middle of Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer. The constellation is in the southeast at nightfall, and wheels across the south later on. Messier 10 is a family of hundreds of thousands of stars. But it's only about 80 light-years across. That means the stars in the cluster are jammed in far tighter than those in our region of the galaxy. So from any star in the cluster — especially those in its busy heart — hundreds or thousands of bright stars would decorate the night sky. Globular clusters are among the oldest residents of the galaxy; Messier 10 is thought to be more than 11 billion years old. By comparison, the Sun is only four and a half billion years old. That means the stars in the cluster formed not long after the Milky Way Galaxy itself. All of the big, bright stars in Messier 10 have long since expired, so most of its remaining stars are small and faint. There are a few bright stars, but they're probably the results of mergers that “rejuvenated” smaller stars. Messier 10 is only about 15,000 light-years away — closer than all but a few of the Milky Way's 150 or so known globulars. Even so, it's not bright enough to see with the eye alone. It is visible through binoculars as a hazy smudge of light. But you need a telescope to see any of its individual stars — members of a big but ancient stellar family.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

All of the stars in the night sky are orbiting the center of the Milky Way Galaxy at a speedy clip. But most of the stars are so far away that even at their high speeds, we don't see them change position — they don't appear to move relative to the other stars. One exception is Barnard's Star. During the span of a human lifetime, it moves by about a quarter of a degree — half the size of the Moon in our sky. That makes it the speed demon of the night sky — it moves faster than any other star. That's because Barnard's Star is just six light-years away. Only the stars of Alpha Centauri are closer. Barnard's Star is named for Edward Emerson Barnard, who measured its blazing speed a century ago. The star's proximity and speed are its main talking points. It's much smaller and lighter than the Sun, and much, much fainter — just a few hundredths of a percent of the Sun's brilliance. That's why it wasn't discovered until 1888. And even then, it was recorded on a photograph that wasn't analyzed for years. Astronomers have been hunting for planets around the star for decades. And some have reported finding them. But none of the claims has stood up, so Barnard's Star remains planetless. Barnard's Star is in Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer, which is in the east and southeast at nightfall. Barnard's Star is well below the serpent bearer's brightest star, Rasalhague. But it's much too faint to see without a big telescope.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

Serpent and Bearer

Two constellations that are entwined in both mythology and the sky climb into good view in the east and southeast this month. Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer, is one of the larger of the 88 modern-day constellations. Its brightest stars form a pattern that looks a bit like the outline of an old coffee urn. It's flanked by the two halves of Serpens, the serpent. The snake's head rises above the serpent bearer, with its tail below. In mythology, Ophiuchus was associated with Asclepius, the son of the god Apollo. He became a great healer, in part because of an encounter with a snake. One day, he saw a snake resurrect another one by laying some herbs on top of it. Asclepius began using those same herbs. He not only healed the sick, but he managed to raise the dead as well. That was bad for the business of Hades, the god of the underworld. He complained to Zeus, the king of the gods. Zeus killed Asclepius with a lightning bolt. But according to one version of the story, that set off a tiff between Zeus and Apollo. To end it, Zeus moved Asclepius into the stars — as the serpent bearer. To find the serpent bearer and the serpent, look low in the sky as night falls for two prominent stars: Altair, which is due east, and Antares, in the southeast. Ophiuchus and Serpens spread far above these bright stars. We'll have more about Ophiuchus tomorrow.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory
