You can't judge someone into joy. If righteousness, peace and joy are the land, sea and sky of the Kingdom of God, then what are we doing worrying about our brother's diet? The first obstacle to Christian unity is my pride. That's a real "Dog Bites Man" headline, isn't it? Of course our pride ruins everything - but especially our ability to bond with others. And that's essential for the church to flourish, and carry out God's program. The lesson we learned in Romans 12, about not thinking of ourselves more highly than we ought to think... that'll be needed here, in chapters 14 and 15. In the junkyard the meanest dog wins. But we're not in the junkyard anymore. Could salvation be that easy? The devil would like us to imagine righteousness as something high and far-off; difficult to attain, even difficult to understand - as if salvation were a kind of sadistic and impossible puzzle. This wasn't Israel's first catastrophic failure. If you want to know what God's going to do with His chosen people now that they have unchosen Him, just leaf backwards in your Bible to one of the many times it happened in the past. Paul is doing that in Romans 9. He picks a couple of scenes from the life of Moses to show that God is sovereign in His mercy, and God is just in His sovereignty. As most parents can tell you, coming up with names isn’t easy. It sometimes takes a while to settle on something that sounds just right. It wasn’t easy for the people who named the constellations, either. Some of the names sound like they just gave up. They picked a region of the sky with few stars, gave it the name of a nearby bright constellation, then added the word “minor.” All three of these minor constellations are in good view at dawn: Ursa Minor, Canis Minor, and Leo Minor. The most famous of the bunch is Ursa Minor – the little bear. Seven of its stars form the Little Dipper, which is in the north – directly below the Big Dipper, which is part of Ursa Major. The constellation is especially well known because its brightest star is Polaris, the Pole Star. It’s at the tip of the little bear’s tail. Canis Minor is the little dog. It’s about half way up the sky in the west-southwest. It has only a couple of bright stars. The brightest is Procyon – a name that means “before the dog.” That’s because the little dog leads the big dog across the sky. In ancient Greece, in fact, the constellation was known as Procyon. Finally, Leo Minor is high overhead. It’s the little lion, standing on the shoulder of Leo. That region of the sky wasn’t depicted as a separate constellation until 1687. Today, though, it’s one of the 88 official constellations – even if it is a “minor” one. Script by Damond Benningfield

To be "dead in our trespasses" (as we read about in Ephesians and Colossians) is to be cut off from life, the life of God. Confirmation, and conformation. When "Christians" don't want to become holy, we have to question whether they're truly born again. But when believers try to sanctify themselves through obeying the Law of God, there's no question they'll fail. In Romans 8 we find the solution: living by the Spirit. Trying, versus dying. The answer to our recidivism problem - Christians like to call it "besetting sin" - is not to try harder to be good! That didn't work for anyone under the Old Covenant, and it still doesn't work. Yes, God's Law is good, but we won't become good by keeping the Law. The solution is much more radical than that. Phillip Sevy is an artist who has spent the last few years drawing for Marvel on titles like X-Men (Astonishing, Unlimited, and From the Ashes), Avengers, Venom, Deadpool, and others. They broke into the comics industry through the Top Cow Talent Hunt, where they drew The Tithe and The Freeze, before moving over to Dark Horse for a lengthy run on Tomb Raider. They wrote The House (with artist Drew Zucker), and wrote and drew Triage, Paradox, and Kepler (with David Duchovny). When they're not feverishly working on comics, you can find them (literally) running around their neighborhood, hiking in the hills, or DMing endless sessions of DnD. Check out their website here. Christie Porter is a writer, journalist, editor, and producer based in Salt Lake City, where they live with their found-family. God's righteousness is bad news for us... and good news. In Romans 1, Paul lays out his topic for the letter: righteousness: The absolute perfection of God's moral character. We discover that we're immoral, impure, even rebels against the Right; and we realize that we have no future. We corrupt ones cannot coexist with His incorruption. But then Paul tells us that the righteousness that condemns us, can save us.
