Ben Lindbergh continues a short series of conversations with baseball content creators who work mainly in a medium other than writing or podcasting by talking to painter Graig Kreindler about Noah Syndergaard, Nick Adenhart, and the best way to pay tribute to past players via uniform number, how Graig got started as a baseball fan […]
On Monday's episode, Brent Maguire looks back at the memorable 2009 season. 2009 has the honorable distinction of being the last year the Angels won a playoff game (oof) AND the year they selected Mike Trout in the draft (yay). Beyond those two tidbits, the Angels also won 97 games in 2009, finally beat Boston in the ALDS, had a full lineup of .300 hitters in an August game, and tragically lost 22-year-old Nick Adenhart early on in the season. Beyond the 2002 title season, it's hard to find a year with more action and storylines than the 2009 season. -Crashing the Pearly Gates 2009 Playoff Reflection: https://crashingthepearlygates.com/ctpgtest/2020/05/11/playoff-reflection-the-2009-season/ -This Week in Baseball Nick Adenhart Tribute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTRLXYMjFIg&t=76s -All audio courtesy of Major League Baseball -Email: brentjmaguire94@gmail.com Learn more about your ad choices. Conversation with Titan Alumnus and Major Leaguer Dustin Garneau. Garneau played at Cal State Fullerton for four years, from 2006 to 2009. Nicknamed Drago for his uncanny likeness to actor Dolph Lundgren who played Ivan Drago, the imposing Soviet Union boxer in the film Rocky 4, Garneau is currently with his fifth Major League Baseball club, the Houston Astros. A 19th round draft pick of the Colorado Rockies, it took Garneau nearly seven years to get the call up to the majors. During his career while at Fullerton and in professional baseball, Garneau has experienced numerous highs and lows. From being a part of three teams to advance to Omaha in his four years on campus, to the loss of Nick Adenhart and the near death of teammate Jon Wilhite, to being called up to the majors, to the loss of teammate Tyler Skaggs, to catching the combined no-hitter after Skaggs death, Garneau's career in baseball has taken some wild turns. On April 8th, 2009, rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart of the Anaheim Angels made his season debut, and would finish the game throwing the best game of his short career. Unfortunately, it would be his last. The post [Bonus] The Tale of Nick Adenhart appeared first on Orbital Jigsaw.
Alex recaps the abysmal series over the weekend against the Blue Jays, and also says that the Red Sox dropping 8 of their past 10 games is not a big deal. There is little evidence to suggest that playing poorly at the end of September has any effect on postseason play. However, not being healthy and setting up your pitching does, which is why the Red Sox are taking the right approach with resting players and being overly cautious. Alex talks about "clinch celebrations," and though why they may be silly, it's still even sillier to complain about them. Plus, Alex has a real problem with those who criticized the Angels' players for pouring liquor on Nick Adenhart's jersey in celebration. The "post of the day" is handed out, Alex previews the final series of the year against the Indians, and also talks about the Phillies' closer situation, the end of races, and the Indians dismissing Eric Wedge.
Alex recaps the Red Sox's series against the Angels over the weekend, and advises "Red Sox Nation" to not push the panic button six games into the season. Alex also goes "Around the League," which includes a rant on Rob Dibble and the horrific job he's doing calling Nationals games. Condolences go out to the Nick Adenhart family, and to all the victims of the tragic incident last week.
