On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the latest with the San Francisco Giants. Today is the deadline for players tagged with the one-year, $18.4 million qualifying offer to accept or reject the offer. Brandon Belt was among 14 players around the league who received the offer. Ben explains everything the QO is (and is not), and makes a prediction about what Belt will ultimately decide. Ben gives detailed thoughts about why Belt would accept the offer, and why he would reject it. Ben ultimately lands on Belt rejected the qualifying offer, because he thinks Belt could get a two- or three-year deal worth around $15 million per season. When healthy, Belt has been among the very best hitters in baseball since the start of the 2020 season, trialing only Mike Trout and Bryce Harper in wRC+ among players with at least 500 plate appearances since '20. Ben also discusses the state of the starting pitcher free agent market, with Noah Syndergaard and Eduardo Rodriguez coming off the board in recent days. The trend in the market right now is that players are receiving more than their average predicted contracts by MLB Trade Rumors, ESPN, and FanGraphs. Ben ponders what this means for the Giants, who must enter the starting pitcher market in a big way this offseason. Specifically regarding high-upside pitchers with injury concerns, Syndergaard's hefty one-year deal may mean Justin Verlander and Carlos Rodón will have even more robust markets than imagined, and may cause the Giants to pivot to another segment of the market. Finally, Ben discusses Gabe Kapler winning NL Manager of the Year in a landslide. Follow & Subscribe to the Locked On Giants Podcast on these platforms

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick breaks down the news that Buster Posey has decided to retire after 12 major league seasons. He leaves the game as one of the best catchers of all time, and he should be in line for induction into Cooperstown one day. Posey changed the Giants from the minute he burst onto the scene in 2010, a year in which he ultimately won Rookie of the Year and led the Giants to their first ever championship in San Francisco. Two years later, he was the MVP and he won another ring. Two years after that, another ring. All the while, Posey just kept on being one of the best players in baseball. Since his debut in 2009, only Mike Trout has amassed more FanGraphs wins above replacement. Hall of Fame guru Jay Jaffe considers Posey a lock for induction one day. Ben relives some of the best moments of Posey's career, from the rings to Matt Cain's perfect game to the grand slam off Matt Latos in 2012 NLDS Game 5. Posey won multiple Silver Sluggers, was selected to seven All-Star teams (and was snubbed a few more times), won a Gold Glove, and was Comeback Player of the Year twice. It will be hard to find a more decorated career in baseball history. Finally, Ben attempts to turn the page to what comes next for San Francisco. They've been so fortunate to be able to write Posey's name into the lineup most days for 12 years, but that's no longer an option. The team has one more year of control over Curt Casali, who can be retained for roughly $2M if the club so desires. The free agent market for catchers is bleak. There are some possible trade candidates, and of course Joey Bart is waiting in the wings. Ben is still not convinced that Bart is ready following his difficult-to-watch debut season in 2020. Bart's struggles, despite being considered one baseball's best prospects, is a perfect illustration of how truly special Posey was. He couldn't have been much better, and the franchise couldn't have been more fortunate to have him wear the orange and black for his entire career, from start to finish. South Side Sox: for Chicago White Sox fans

As other teams mosey on through the playoffs, the White Sox head into the silly season of speculation on matters small and large, and SSS duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and west coast corespondent, Will, take a look at some of it. There are a few chuckles along the way, because most of the speculation is downright nutty — though they do agree if you want to pretend you can trade a guy who can't function unless it's the ninth inning and your team has a one- to three-run lead and it's between 68 and 76 degrees and the wind is blowing in from right center at 8-15 mph with his $16 million contract for anything useful, you might as well decide you'll get Mike Trout. And Shohei Ohtani. Elsewhere, there's the usual looking for a second baseman and a right fielder. Why, let's get Corey Seager to go with Trout! Need a backup catcher who can actually, oh, maybe, catch (unlike even our first-string catcher, whose framing has fallen to mediocre at best, and has never been much good at that blocking or throwing stuff)? Buster Posey seems a natural! Then there are more serious possibilities, such as whether Carlos Rodón should, or will, accept a qualifying offer (Will says yes, Leigh says no — Scott Boras knows the answer). Which leads to possible starting pitcher additions — Max Scherzer seems like a fine idea, and just as realistic as hoping the Easter Bunny leaves an ace in our basket. Speaking of baskets, we all know there will only be a small one as long as Jerry Reinsdorf has his tight fist on the purse strings, which will leave the rest of us as basket cases. That's the fate of White Sox fans. But, hey, the offseason is for dreaming, so let's all dream. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

For a team that's not going to be in the playoffs this season, the Los Angeles Angels are certainly making headlines! Jon and Mike discuss Joe Maddon's unfiltered comments about the state of the team and who these are pointed toward: owner Arte Moreno, GM Perry Minasian, the team, or the fans? (4:24) Perry did respond to these comments and hinted at what his plans may be as the Halos move into the off-season. (13:53) While Angels Play-By-Play announcer Matt Vasgersian jumped on Buster Olney's podcast, he mentioned Trout and other high-profile players lobbying for ownership to bring in big-time players like Max Scherzer. (22:32) This caused the Halo Bros. to ask the question; could Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani influence this team and use their drawing power to attract top talent to Anaheim? (25:06) Then, panic set in over the weekend during Shohei's postgame conference, where his ominous words lead us to ask, "Shohei Stay Or Shohei Go?" (33:27) Should Angels fans panic, and will this light a fire under ownership to make winning moves over the winter? (38:16) Jon asks non-Angel and Blue Jays fans to share their thoughts about the AL MVP race between Ohtani and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (46:15) Mike shares some interesting statistics about our beloved team, (49:48), and we take a look at the Play-By-Play Announcer Standings!
