Need time to concentrate or relax? Then listen to the gurgling and bubbly sounds of Steamboat Geyser in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. "Steamboat Geyser is the world's tallest active geyser. It showers watchers and drenches the walkway. Days, months, or years pass between the major eruptions of Steamboat Geyser. Steamboat Geyser's major eruptions (more than 300 feet high) are unpredictable and often many years apart. Its frequent “minor phase” eruptions eject water 10 to 40 feet high." This podcast covers the section of road between Norris Geyser Basin and the Canyon Village Area which is home to the hippest thing in the park, the Lower Falls which sits in the namesake canyon for Yellowstone-The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. I'll tell you about a few things to see along this short section of road including a couple short, easy hikes and the only place to catch a prehistoric fish in the park. But most importantly I'll tell you which vantage points are best to see both sets of falls from and tell you where you can actually sit on the famous Thomas Moran bench and take a great picture and explain the history behind that bench and how that very spot was synonymous in getting Yellowstone Park voted into existence as the first national park in the world. As well as a couple easy trails to see the lower falls without all the people and a great place to get right down next to the massive, surging and beautiful Yellowstone River where you can actually get your feet wet if you like. And as usual, I throw in a couple interesting death stories as well as a story about a couple of Italians who were probably going to get killed by a monster Grizzly bear before I intervened and possibly saved their dumb asses.
This podcast covers the 14 mile section of road from Madison Junction to Norris Geyser Basin which is home to Steamboat Geyser. Along the way I will tell you about 2 secret hikes. The first is right to the base of Gibbon Falls where the trail actually goes into the river in spots and where you can have the warm waters of Gibbon Falls cascading down all over you as well as a great Brook Trout fishing hole right at the base of the falls. The second gets you to the Gibbon Meadow backcountry geyser areas where you will find all sorts of colored pools, mud pots, fumaroles and geyser pools that erupt constantly. This area is truly in the backcountry but is only a short hike from your car and is a truly hidden gem in Yellowstone. This area sees less than 10 people a year if that. You just have to know how to get there and I will tell you how here. I will also tell you about a really interesting and somewhat weird spot along the Gibbon River that is only 20' from the road but is hidden by trees so hardly anyone knows its there except locals. I will also cover the Artists Paint Pots Trial which is a great hike for small kids as well as Norris Geyser Basin which is my least favorite stop in the park. So if you are up for some great hikes, a great fishing spot or just want to know more about this small section of road that most visitors never give the time of day and just pass right through, then take a listen and Explore Yellowstone Like a Local.
Wrapping up our trip to Glacier, Yellowstone and Grand Teton - what we didn't have time for that I'd want to be sure to do next time.
This podcast covers the 21 mile section of road on the west side of the upper loop in Yellowstone park. Included in this podcast is Norris Geyser Basin, points of interest along the road towards Bunsen Peak. Details on a great mountain bike, then hike to Osprey Falls which is a great backcountry waterfall which is depicted on the cover of this podcast. As well as the best places to see the terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs as well as the Beaver Ponds Loop Hike and a really funny story about a ranger and his girlfriend. For the icing on the cake, I tell you where you can sit on a 36 million year old petrified tree stump.
