It's only been 24 hours into Boys' Weekend, and Keith and Big Dick Blaine already have plenty of ridiculousness to yap about. Before Buddy Rick and Killer Kyle arrive, the duo not only teach you the sincere foolproof way to be a millionaire, but they also discuss the amazing movies Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie (96%) and Busboys (literally no rating), Keith's and their mothers' cooking, the disingenuous tricks at Keith's pool, and looking up Charlotte strip I mean gentlemen's clubs.
SUBURBAKNIGHT: Act One Walter Knope is having a bad week. His antique store is bankrupt. The bank has locked him out. His house is now filled with everything he couldn't sell. His teenage daughter thinks he's embarrassing, his marriage has seen better days, and Walter is beginning to suspect middle age may just be a long series of humiliations ending in death. Then Richard Sarandon moves in across the street. Richard is rich, handsome, charming and spectacularly confident. The neighborhood women can't stop looking at him. The husbands barely notice. Walter notices everything. Especially the two body bags carried out of Richard's house in the middle of the night. Then Walter sees Richard do something no human being should be able to do. Written by Nick Bannister, SUBURBAKNIGHT is a wicked suburban horror-comedy about marriage, jealousy, masculinity and the nightmare of discovering that the impossibly perfect man next door may actually be a monster. Walter calls the police. They find nothing. Richard smiles. Walter looks insane. Then comes the neighborhood party. Pool. Booze. Barbecue. Husbands watching football. Wives watching Richard. With help from Andy, his beer-bellied neighbor and resident horror-movie expert, Walter finally puts a name to what moved in across the street. An incubus. A demon that seduces women and feeds on their life force. Now Richard knows Walter is onto him. Walter knows Richard wants Samantha. And the fight Walter thought was about his pride, his marriage and his rapidly collapsing life is about to become something much worse. Luckily, Walter's house is currently filled with swords, crossbows, armor and medieval weapons nobody wanted to buy. Maybe the antique business wasn't such a bad idea after all. Your pool route doesn't get easier because you work harder, it gets easier because you work smarter with the right gear on your truck. We walk through the underrated pool service tools that consistently save time in the field, even though most techs don't think to call them “essential.” If you've ever fought a filter clamp, wrestled a stuck pump lid, or lost minutes on a union that won't turn, this one is built for you.We start with a high-quality rubber mallet and why it's a game-changer for filter cleanings and stubborn pump lids, especially if you're tired of using your palm as a tool. From there, we get specific about extra large channel lock pliers, including how they help with Rainbow chlorinator lids, salt cell unions (with a rag to protect the plastic), and even jammed telescopic poles. The practical angle matters here: leverage, balance, and repeatable techniques that reduce strain and prevent damage. Then we get into the “weird but brilliant” kit, like keeping a tennis ball for dual-skimmer suction control and for emergency situations when equipment is below the water line and water won't stop pouring out. We also cover duct tape for temporary, water-resistant fixes, plus the right lubricants for O-rings: Magic Lube where it shines and RV-grade silicone spray when you want a cleaner, faster application. Finally, we talk filter speed tools like a multi-torque socket set, along with simple helpers for drain plugs and clearing impeller debris when flow drops. If you got value from these pool maintenance tips, subscribe, share this with a pool tech friend, and leave a review so more service pros can find the show. What's the most underrated tool on your truck? We share the underrated pool service tools we reach for constantly and explain the real field problems they solve. Mortgage secondary execution is increasingly a value-optimization exercise rather than a simple Agency versus non-Agency decision, as growing non-Agency investor demand can make private execution more attractive even for loans that qualify for Agency delivery, while expanding non-QM demand creates additional outlets for high-yielding, well-performing assets. Robbie interviews Hometap's Jeff Glass on the latest and greatest from the home equity space. And the podcast closes with why specified pool pricing volatility is making things tough for secondary marketing desks out there.Thank you to Optimal Blue. Cartridge pool filters have a loyal fan base, and they also get hit with the same two critiques over and over: you cannot backwash them, and you cannot easily vacuum to waste. We take those arguments seriously and walk through what is actually true, what is overstated, and what you can fix with smarter equipment choices. If you have ever wondered whether you picked the “wrong” pool filter, this breakdown will help you decide with confidence. We start with backwashing. Sand filters and DE filters rely on backwash to restore flow and drop rising PSI, but cartridge pleats do not shed debris that way. The key detail most people miss is capacity: a large quad cartridge filter in the 400 to 500 square foot range can hold dramatically more dirt than smaller DE setups, and it often goes four to six months between cleanings in many areas. In dusty regions like the desert, cleaning is more frequent, but the job can still be faster and simpler than you might think. Then we tackle filtration myths and real-world water clarity. DE filters can filter smaller particles on paper, yet the difference between 3 microns and typical cartridge filtration is not something you can spot with your eyes when chemistry, circulation, and maintenance are dialed in. We also get practical about the “vacuum to waste” advantage of multiport valves, how to add a waste bypass to a cartridge system, and the gear pros use when a pool is trashed after a storm or during a green pool cleanup. We finish with ways to reduce cleaning frequency using a cyclonic prefilter like the Waterco MultiCyclone, plus an honest look at mess, safety, and how long cartridges and DE grids really last today. If this helped you think more clearly about cartridge filters vs DE vs sand, subscribe, share this with a pool owner or pool pro, and leave a review so more people can find the show.We break down the biggest complaints about cartridge pool filters and test whether they hold up in real pool service. We compare cartridge, DE, and sand filtration on backwashing, water clarity, vacuum-to-waste options, cleaning mess, and long-term costs. • why cartridge filters cannot be backwashed and why that matters less with large quad cartridges • how square footage affects PSI rise, flow, and cleaning intervals • micron ratings and why water clarity looks the same between cartridge and DE • when vacuuming to waste is genuinely useful and what cartridge owners can add to get it • prefiltration with a Waterco MultiCyclone to trap dirt before the cartridge • cleaning speed tradeoffs and tools that reduce bending and time • DE cleanup downsides, mess around the pad, and health concerns with DE dust • realistic lifespan and replacement costs for cartridges versus DE grids today Are you a pool service pro looking to take your business to the next level? Send us Fan MailNatalie Hood welcomes Eric Knight back to the Talking Pools Podcast to discuss his move from Watershape University to Pool Brain—and what this new role could mean for pool service professionals.Eric explains how a conversation that began in 2022 eventually developed into an opportunity to combine the work he does best: water chemistry, education, technology, and solving real-world problems for technicians in the field. He also clears up the speculation surrounding his departure from Watershape University. There was no drama, no burned bridge, and no scandal—just an honest recognition of his strengths and an opportunity that better fits how his brain works. The conversation then turns toward the future of the pool industry. Eric explains why artificial intelligence is unlikely to replace pool technicians, but will increasingly help them make better decisions, optimize routes, train employees, standardize service, and operate more profitable businesses.Eric also offers an early look at Pool Brain's vision for automated chemical dosing, guided technician workflows, and “point-of-need education”—giving technicians the information they need while they are standing in front of the pool, instead of making them wait for the next class or trade show.In This EpisodeWhy Eric Knight joined Pool BrainHow his relationship with Pool Brain began in 2022The truth about his departure from Watershape UniversityWhy recognizing your weaknesses is an important leadership skillWhat Eric is most proud of accomplishing at WatershapeWhy traditional industry education is becoming cost-prohibitiveHow AI will assist pool professionals without replacing field techniciansWhy more displaced white-collar workers are entering the tradesThe story behind the Orenda Calculator and ChemiculatorHow technology can eliminate dangerous chemical-dosing shortcutsWhat automated water-chemistry dosing could mean for service companiesHow guided workflows can improve training, safety, and accountabilityWhy technicians need education at the exact moment a problem occursThis is Part One of Natalie Hood's conversation with Eric Knight. The dorks discuss evaluating older video games, television, and movies in modern times. A lot has changed since the early days of each of these forms of media, from technological advancements to cultural shifts to changes in how each one is consumed. It's not just four old nerds rambling about the way things used to be, because we're not saying anything was better before. But we do want everyone to understand that things were different in ways you might not think about and that shaped why older media is the way it is. Come join us in the future! Black algae can turn a clean pool into a never-ending battle, and the worst part is you might be spreading it yourself without realizing it. We dig into what “black algae” really is (often cyanobacteria), why it clings so stubbornly to plaster, and why the usual quick shock routine often fails unless you do the one step most people skip: aggressive brushing to break the protective heads so chemicals can reach what's underneath. We also get specific about transmission and cross contamination. Spores can hitch a ride on anything wet, from a bathing suit that went from the ocean to the pool, to the damp tools riding in the back of a service truck. We talk through the biggest culprits, including nets, leaf rakes, bags, and especially stainless steel brushes, plus how low free chlorine levels make the next pool far more likely to “catch” black algae after exposure. Then we lay out a practical pool maintenance plan for black algae treatment and prevention: how to approach superchlorination safely, when topical products like granular trichlor or broken cal-hypo tablets can help, and how copper options (including chelated systems like PoolRx) fit into longer-term control without creating staining issues. If you want fewer callbacks, fewer route-wide outbreaks, and a clear plan for stopping black algae from coming back when chlorine dips, this one is for you. Subscribe for more pool service training, share this with a tech who needs it, and leave a review with your toughest black algae question. We break down why black algae is so hard to kill, why it often comes back, and why it is more like cyanobacteria than typical pool algae. We also explain how black algae can spread from pool to pool through damp tools and low chlorine, plus the practical steps we use to treat it and prevent cross contamination.• What black algae is and why it resists normal shocking• How spores can hitchhike on wet suits, towels, and pool tools• Why brushing the heads off is nonnegotiable for treatment• When superchlorination works and why circulation matters• Granular trichlor and cal-hypo tablet options for topical killing• Copper approaches like PoolRx and dosing cautions to avoid staining• Dedicated nets, rakes, and stainless brushes to stop route-wide spread• The “never let chlorine hit zero” rule after a black algae cleanupAre you a pool service pro looking to take your business to the next level? Pool chemicals do not wait for a “big mistake” to hurt you. Most injuries and long-term health problems come from tiny shortcuts repeated every day: bare hands on trichlor residue, a loose muriatic acid cap in the truck, or a quick DE recharge with no mask because you are trying to move fast. We share the safety habits we rely on in the field, including why gloves that actually resist pool chemicals matter, how we think about eye protection without going overboard, and what to do when routine starts making you careless. We also get specific about common products pool service techs touch constantly. Trichlor tablets can leave potent residue that chews through the wrong gloves. Muriatic acid can splash from one small transport error, so we break down smarter storage in cases, why loose bottles are asking for leaks, and what immediate rinsing should look like. Then we zoom out to chemical compatibility and transportation, including why acid and chlorine should never share a case and how a rear-end collision can turn poor separation into a toxic problem. Some of the biggest risks are the ones people shrug off. Diatomaceous earth (DE) dust is an inhalation hazard tied to silica exposure, so we talk masks, low-dust DE, and alternatives like perlite. Even test kits are not automatically “safe” just because the bottles are small. We cover OTO reagent hazards and why checking the Safety Data Sheet (SDS or MSDS) helps you make better decisions for your health and your business. If this helped, subscribe, share it with a pool pro who needs it, and leave a review so more techs find practical pool chemical safety guidance. We walk through the real-world risks pool pros face when handling common pool chemicals and how simple protective habits prevent burns, splashes, and long-term exposure. Is your pool service business making money this summer, or is the summer running your business? In Episode #313 of the Pool Nation Podcast, Edgar and John "JJ Flawless" break down the 5 mid-season checks every pool professional should be making right now to protect their customers, employees, equipment, routes, and most importantly, their profits. August is one of the toughest months in the swimming pool industry. Water temperatures are climbing, chlorine demand is increasing, equipment is working harder, technicians are battling extreme heat, customers are using their pools more, and chemical, fuel, labor, and operating costs can quietly destroy your margins. This episode is a mid-season business checkup for pool service companies. Edgar and John break down five critical areas: • Water & Chemistry → Why the chemistry strategy that worked in May may not work in August, how higher water temperatures accelerate demand, and why pool pros have to stay ahead of problems instead of reacting to them. • Pool Equipment & Filtration → Pumps, filters, salt systems, automation, plumbing, seals, circulation, and other equipment are under maximum stress during the summer. Learn what you should be watching before a small issue becomes an emergency call. • Route Efficiency → Driving all over town costs more than time. Poor route density, unnecessary drive time, fuel costs, and inefficient scheduling can quietly destroy the profitability of your pool route. • Your Team → Your technicians are dealing with the same summer heat and pressure you are. Edgar and John discuss workload, heat, burnout, employee retention, leadership, and why taking care of your team becomes even more important during peak season. • The Profit Check → The check almost nobody wants to do. Are your pools actually profitable? Increased chemical usage, overtime, fuel, callbacks, filter neglect, equipment issues, and extra service time can turn what looks like a profitable account into a pool that is quietly costing you money every week. They also dive deep into one of the most overlooked parts of summer pool maintenance: filtration. Putting off filter cleanings doesn't just create water problems. It can lead to increased chemical consumption, algae, callbacks, unhappy customers, longer service stops, lost filter-cleaning revenue, employee frustration, and ultimately lost customers. John shares a real-world example of how his company has prioritized filter cleanings during peak season and how properly maintaining filtration can create additional revenue while making the route easier to manage. The bigger lesson? Summer exposes the weaknesses in your pool service business. Your systems. Your pricing. Your routes. Your equipment. Your leadership. Your customer service. And your profitability. If you own or operate a pool service company, pool cleaning business, pool repair company, pool maintenance route, or swimming pool business, this episode will help you identify the problems that could be costing you money before the season is over. Edgar and John also share a personal Pool Nation update as Zac "The Pool Boy" Nicholas steps away from Pool Nation to focus on the continued growth of The Pool Boys, his family, employees, and business. The guys reflect on Zac's contribution to Pool Nation and why sometimes business growth requires making difficult decisions and focusing on the opportunity directly in front of you. Plus, Pool Nation gives an update on upcoming industry training and a major announcement coming August 14 at 4:00 PM Central Time. A dog-friendly backyard can turn a routine pool stop into a safety problem, a chemistry problem, and a pricing problem all at once. We've both seen it: you open the gate with your hands full, a dog tries to bolt, and suddenly you're one misstep away from chasing someone's pet through the neighborhood. We share simple habits that prevent the chaos, including how a quick distraction (like a chew treat) can buy you time to get inside safely and keep the gate secured. Then we get real about the risk most pool techs don't want to talk about: even a “nice” dog can bite when it feels sick, threatened, or territorial. We walk through practical boundaries, what to watch for, and how to decide when an account is no longer worth it. We also cover tools some pros keep on the truck to create space and stay safe, plus why avoiding the incident in the first place is always the best plan. Finally, we tackle the elephant in the room: dogs swimming in the pool. If you've ever seen cloudy water, rapid chlorine loss, hair-packed skimmers, or a filter that looks like it swallowed a shedding machine, you know the struggle. We lay out a clear pool maintenance strategy using weekly enzymes, extra chlorine planning, longer pump run time, more frequent filter cleanings, earlier cartridge replacement, and “enhancers” like PoolRx paired with borates or phosphate remover. We also talk equipment that makes life easier, including suction-side cleaners with canisters and solar surface skimmers that keep dog hair from clogging baskets. If you service pools, this is the playbook for keeping dog pools manageable and making sure the customer pays for the extra load. Subscribe for more field-tested pool service advice, share this with a tech who needs it, and leave a review with your wildest “dogs on the route” story. We break down what dogs in the backyard really mean for pool service, from gate escapes and barking chaos to bite risk and account safety. We also lay out a practical plan for keeping dog-swimming pools clear, sanitized, and profitable with the right chemicals, equipment, and customer pricing. • using chew treats to prevent dogs bolting through the gate • staying alert because even friendly dogs can bite without warning • recognizing when a dangerous dog makes an account not worth the risk • carrying humane deterrents and safety tools for worst-case moments • dealing with yard waste and what to do if it gets into the pool • explaining why dog swimming drives cloudy water and fast chlorine loss • adding weekly enzymes to reduce tile-line scum and buildup • charging for extra chlorine and leaving customer-paid shock on site • extending pump run time to support circulation and filtration • cleaning filters more often and replacing cartridges sooner • using PoolRx plus borates or phosphate remover for added protection • upgrading cleaners and adding a solar surface skimmer for dog hair control Join the pool guy coaching program. Send us Fan MailProfanity does not make someone unprofessional. Confidently spreading bad information does.In this intentionally abrasive episode of the Talking Pools Podcast, Rudy Stankowitz takes aim at the comment-section experts who diagnose complicated pool problems from one blurry photograph, defend outdated beliefs with “I've been doing this for 20 years,” and treat confidence as a substitute for evidence.BREAKING INDUSTRY NEWS July's pool-industry news revealed a market undergoing a serious correction: as reported by Pentair, distributors are aggressively reducing excess equipment inventory; as reported by POOLCORP, essential maintenance and repair demand remains resilient despite weak discretionary spending; as first reported by Bloomberg, Leslie's was considering strategic options—including a possible Chapter 11 filing—to address its debt; and as reported by the U.S. Chemical Safety Board, years of corrosion, inadequate safeguards and nearly 14 million pounds of reactive chemicals contributed to the catastrophic Bio-Lab fire in Conyers. Adding to the industry shake-up, as reported by Pool Brain on August 5, Eric Knight stepped down as executive director of Watershape University to become Pool Brain's head of education technology, overseeing automated chemical-dosing tools, guided training workflows and point-of-need education for pool professionals. Pool Brain announcementThe Confidently Wrong Rudy explains why experience only has value when it remains connected to research, why a correct result does not necessarily prove the explanation behind it, and why professionals must be willing to say, “I don't know.” He also examines the limits of the Langelier Saturation Index, the risks of oversimplified chemistry advice, and the difference between handing someone an answer and teaching that person how to investigate a problem. The pool industry does not need to lose its personality, clean up every four-letter word, or turn itself into a room full of corporate robots. It does need people who verify what they say, correct themselves when the evidence changes, and understand that other professionals and customers make real decisions based on the information they share. The loudest person may get the most attention. The person who consistently does the work earns the trust. In This EpisodeWhy profanity is not a measure of professionalismThe difference between an opinion and supportable informationHow bad pool chemistry advice can become expensive, dangerous, and publicWhy 20 years in the industry does not automatically equal 20 years of growthExperience repeated versus experience examinedHow improved research and instrumentation change what the industry understandsWhy correlation does not prove causationThe danger of diagnosing pool problems without enough informationWhat the Langelier Saturation Index does—and what it cannot tell youWhy “I don't know” can be the most professional answer availableCorrecting misinformation without surrendering credibilityCombining field experience with current scienceTeaching critical thinking instead of creating dependenceWhy trust is worth more than comments, likes, and online attentionKey TakeawaysExperience should be a foundation, not a shield against better information. A professional gathers facts, considers competing explanations, understands the limits of a diagnosis, and changes course when the evidence demands it.A real mentor does more than provide an answer. A mentor teaches someone what to test, what to rule out, what information matters, and how to reason through the next problem independently.Profanity backed by accurate information is a voice. Let's talk about 3 more dropped Reflecting Pool cases and Trump vs Pirro....
President Trump publicly criticized U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro for dropping vandalism charges tied to the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool renovation. The Washington Post's Dan Diamond explains what went wrong. Authorities in Spokane, Washington charged a suspect with arson in one of three wildfires that have forced more than 60,000 evacuations and destroyed hundreds of homes. MyNorthwest reports federal help is on the way to aid fire victims. Millions of Americans have lost SNAP benefits since new eligibility rules took effect last year. NPR reports bigger cuts to the food-assistance program are coming this fall. Plus, a man was arrested with ammunition at President Trump’s LA golf course, embattled GOP Rep. Max Miller requested a house investigation into himself, and a discarded piece of a SpaceX rocket crashes into the moon. Today’s episode was hosted by Gideon Resnick.
Donald Trump has been raging at Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for Washington, DC, because she dropped those high-profile prosecutions for alleged vandalism of his Reflecting Pool renovation. That pressure is corrupt on its own. But new leaks are making it look even worse. CBS News reports that Pirro actually carried a box of evidence to the White House showing that the facts simply didn't support those prosecutions. The meeting got “heated,” per CBS, seemingly meaning Trump wanted prosecutions in spite of what the facts and the law said. Meanwhile, we just learned this fiasco triggered private “tirades” from Trump, further underscoring his quest for lawless prosecutions. We talked to former federal prosecutor Barbara McQuade, author of The Fix: Saving America from the Corruption of a Mob-Style Government. She walks us through just how deeply irregular this presidential conduct truly is, discusses what has been lost at DOJ, and reflects on how a Democratic House and/or Senate can rein in all this madness next year. Spain's Prime Minister labels a surge of thousands of migrants into his country from Morocco an "attack," as most of those individuals have already been returned to their home country. The Trump administration is publicly at odds after Jeanine Pirro's office drops vandalism charges against an individual initially charged with damaging the DC Reflecting Pool. The Pima County Sheriff's Office releases the full "ransom notes" in the Nancy Guthrie disappearance, and pleads with the public for help in solving the case. President Trump once again calls off major strikes in Iran after calls from Gulf allies who urged de-escalation.
