Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
Michael Neiman, who, along with Bruce Matson, brought us Platinum Blazing to the trail, is our guest this week. Michael thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2018, and his new book tells that story–as a 98% true novel. Michael, or Sharkbait has been juggling a job, parenthood, and his writing to bring this book to publication, and it's a good read, with plenty of page turning moments. You can check out the book at his website, Hello Neiman, or on Amazon at Hello My Name is Sharkbait: A 2,000-Mile Adventure on the Appalachian Trail. OR you could follow him on Instagram at Michael Neiman (@helloneiman) • Instagram profile. He even appeared on Minnesota local TV promoting his book, here:Hello My Name is Sharkbait on Minnesota's Fox 9 Good Day - December 22, 2025 Ezra Peterson, the last remaining member of the Hike the Good Hike cohort, shares his moving story of transitioning from a woman to a man, and he is feeding his joy of the outdoors by taking on a Fastest Known Time for a non-binary person in hiking the Superior Hiking Trail. He's quite self-deprecating in that there isn't currently a record in that category, but his refreshing attitude to a tricky subject shines through in our conversation. Finally today, the accountability blog takes us to within three weeks of my start on the Appalachian Trail. I've got everything I need, plus a few things I don't need, but I still haven't packed and tried out my darn pack!! I used my hike in 2024 on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. You can learn more about the hike and the organization–and donate–by visiting Hike with Steve - Empowering Parents, One Step at a Time | Parenting Matters %. I hope you want to support this critical mission. Don't forget. Our entire series of videos from our Woods Hole Weekend in 2022 is now FREE and available at my YouTube page at Woods Hole Weekend - Trailer There, you'll find all sorts of tips and tricks that our guests took away from the weekend that helped them with their own hikes this year. Check it out. I often ask listeners for ideas on who to interview, and I'm sure several of you say, "I could do that. I've got an awesome story to tell." You're the person we need to hear from. If you'd like to be interviewed on the podcast, just register as a guest on the link below, and I'll be in touch. Come on the show! If you like what we're doing on the Hiking Radio Network, and want to see our shows continue, please consider supporting us with either a one-off or monthly donation. You'll find the donate button on each Hiking Radio Network page at Hiking Radio Network . Additionally, you can join our membership at Steve (Mighty Blue) Adams. It's worth checking out what is on offer for you there. If you prefer NOT to use PayPal, you can now support us via check by mailing it to Mighty Blue Publishing, 3821 Milflores Drive, Sun City Center, FL 33573. Any support is gratefully received. Additionally, you can "Zelle" me a donation to steve@hikingradionetwork.com. Or "Venmo" me at @Steve-Adams-105. They both work! If you'd like to take advantage of my book offer (all three of my printed hiking books–with a personal message and signed by me–for $31, including postage to the United States) send a check payable to Mighty Blue Publishing at the address just above.
In this episode, Danielle DiMartino Booth, CEO of QI Research and former Fed insider, calls the Federal Reserve "borderline cruel" after FOMC minutes revealed several participants wanted rate hikes despite Americans' financial wellbeing hitting record lows. Danielle argues we're already in a labor market recession that "won't be acknowledged for years but is undeniable to the people who are in it," pointing to unprecedented data: 12 consecutive months of negative payroll revisions, 419,000 net job losses when excluding education and health services, seasonal adjustment anomalies adding 140,000 phantom jobs in January, and unemployment survey response rates at record lows making the data unreliable. She highlights that Truflation shows inflation at just 0.7% while the Fed maintains hawkish rhetoric, that 52% of college graduates are underemployed with another graduating class arriving in two months, and that AI is destroying entry-level jobs in finance, accounting, and architecture without any retraining programs in place. Danielle warns about the societal implications of Gen Z and millennials (52.5% of voters) increasingly using buy now pay later for basic necessities like medical bills and utilities, while others use it for vacations with no intention of paying it back. She questions whether Kevin Warsh will hold to his stated principles about shrinking the Fed's balance sheet or cave to market pressure like Powell did in 2018, and reveals that Fed governor Michael Barr is already hinting at expanded social safety nets or UBI to address AI-driven unemployment. Danielle refuses to "gaslight Americans" about the economy and emphasizes the urgent need to think about retraining workers and the societal implications of mass youth unemployment.Links: Danielle's Twitter/X: https://twitter.com/dimartinobooth Substack: https://dimartinobooth.substack.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@DanielleDiMartinoBoothQIFed Up: https://www.amazon.com/Fed-Up-Insiders-Federal-Reserve/dp/0735211655Timestamps: 0:00 Welcome back Danielle DiMartino Booth 0:52 FOMC minutes: Several participants want rate hikes 1:46 Americans' financial wellbeing at record lows — the disconnect 3:31 Truflation at 0.7% — what the Fed is missing 5:27 What's the Fed missing on the labor side? 7:06 Labor recession in plain sight — concentrated in non-cyclical sectors8:28 Buy now pay later for medical and dental bills 9:32 Gen Z and millennials: Taking on debt with no intention to pay 11:00 A revolt against the system? 12:15 The Fed didn't listen to your open letters 13:40 Rate hike talk while small business borrowing costs are "prohibitively tight" 14:59 Fed being sanguine on credit delinquencies 16:14 What would be the responsible thing for the Fed to do? 17:12 "It's getting personal" — Americans worried about losing their own jobs 18:02 52% of college graduates are underemployed 18:42 Is this AI or just an excuse? 20:08 What happens in 2028 if the pendulum swings? 21:32 Kevin Warsh — will he stick to his principles? 24:01 Is the Fed too beholden to the market? 25:15 Unemployment survey response rate at record lows 27:23 Base case for the economy — labor market recession continues 28:56 What keeps you up at night and what makes you hopeful?
This week is a stream of consciousness episode where I continue the hike from last time! I talk about a lesson that I've learned from not consuming cannabis, my hopes for a peaceful and unified future for our species, and we end the hike with heading to one of the bigger creek beaches along Floyd's Fork. It was a beautiful day outside and I'm glad I had the ability to capture it as well as a conversation with my own consciousness! I hope you have a good day whenever and wherever you happen to listen to this one! Next week I'll have an update on the Cactus! Support the show

Dr. Winnie M Li is an author, activist, and educator. A former filmmaker, Winnie's life and career trajectory were severely disrupted at the age of 29, when she became the victim of a violent stranger rape in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Her debut novel Dark Chapter (2017) is a fictional re-imagining of that assault and its aftermath, from the perspectives of both victim and perpetrator. Her subsequent novels Complicit (2022) and What We Left Unsaid (2025) also address the legacy of trauma, in workplaces and in families. Trigger Warning: Childhood trauma and suicidal ideationIn this deeply moving episode of The Impostor Syndrome Files, I talk with Jesse Cody, founder and president of Hike the Good Hike, a nonprofit that uses nature and storytelling to promote mental health awareness. Jesse shares his journey from suicidal ideation to self-discovery, starting with no hiking experience at age 40, and how walking the Appalachian Trail helped him confront his past, process childhood trauma and find purpose through service.Jesse's story is one of radical honesty, emotional courage and the healing potential of nature. A survivor of childhood sexual trauma, Jesse opens up about his path toward mental wellness, including the moment he chose life, the role of community support and the transformative power of taking a “long walk” to face the pain he spent decades hiding. Today, he uses his story to inspire others and create space for more people to find strength through vulnerability and the outdoors. We also talk about how men, especially young men and boys, are socialized to hide emotional pain, and what we can do as parents, professionals and advocates to change that narrative. Jesse offers practical, hopeful suggestions for connecting youth to nature, community and healthier emotional outlets.About My GuestJesse Cody is a transformational keynote speaker who inspires audiences to reconnect with nature as a powerful tool for mental health improvement and personal growth. His compelling journey reflects a major leap from the nightlife scene in Boston and NYC into the world of hiking, where he has now covered over 16,000 miles throughout the U.S. This transformation was shaped by his personal battles with childhood sexual trauma, insecurities, depression, narcissistic tendencies, and suicidal ideation. This trauma lies at the root of his life's struggles, informing his experiences and fueling his passion for advocacy.By openly addressing his childhood sexual trauma, Jesse sheds light on the often-taboo subject, demonstrating its significant impact on mental health and personal development. His story serves as a testament to courage and resilience, embodying a message of hope for those grappling with their own dark experiences.~Connect with Jesse:Website: www.hikethegoodhike.org Instagram: @hikethegoodhikeLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/jesse-cody-01a5a2187 ~Connect with Kim and The Impostor Syndrome Files:Join the free Impostor Syndrome Challenge:https://www.kimmeninger.com/challengeLearn more about the Leading Humans discussion group:https://www.kimmeninger.com/leadinghumansgroupJoin the Slack channel to learn from, connect with and support other professionals: https://forms.gle/Ts4Vg4Nx4HDnTVUC6Join the Facebook group:https://www.facebook.com/groups/leadinghumansSchedule time to speak with Kim Meninger directly about your questions/challenges: https://bookme.name/ExecCareer/strategy-sessionConnect on LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimmeninger/Website:https://kimmeninger.com
Walmart (WMT) starts the holiday-shortened week with a price target hike to $150 from the analysts at Redburn. Ben Watson joins Morning Movers to look at the chart. On the short-term picture, he sees a bounce off of the $126 support level and sees "strong momentum to the upside" near all-time highs around $135. Zooming out, Ben notes a possible bull flag pattern developing ahead of Walmart's earnings. With that study in mind, Ben puts the possible upside resistance level at $142 but cautions that the earnings event could swing shares either way.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – / schwabnetwork Follow us on Facebook – / schwabnetwork Follow us on LinkedIn - / schwab-network About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

Westpac's economists are picking 6 consecutive OCR hikes from December - they're forecasting that it will hit 4% by the end of next year. The OCR dropped to 2.25% just before Christmas, which is where it stands now, but there have been rumblings for some time that we'd start seeing hikes soon, as all major banks lifted long-term loan rates. We welcome Rob Diamond to the show today. I met Rob in 2024 in Hot Springs, when we went and tried to help out after Hurricane Helene. Rob told me then that he was planning on a 2025 thru-hike, so I asked him then to follow up with me once he was done. Rob's hike didn't turn out as he had expected, yet he battled through innumerable obstacles as he made his way to Katahdin, eventually summiting on his intended summit date of 9/11. On the way, Rob raised awareness of the scourge of suicide among military and first responders by carrying dog tags to represent those who die by suicide. It was a deeply personal mission, and Rob fulfilled it in a caring way. You can check out more about Rob on his YouTube channel at DogTag hiking the AT. There is even a terrific little video and song about Kyle's Trail that tracked one of the special dog tags. Check this out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=We85_ujD7MY We've met most of our Hike the Good Hike cohort, and this week, single mother Tristen Murphy shares her emotional story. Lawmakers are meeting in Salem to discuss and decide the fate of a flurry of bills during Oregon’s short legislative session this year. One of those is a bipartisan bill that would hike the state’s lodging tax at places like campgrounds, hotels and Airbnbs from 1.5% to 2.75%. The tax increase is expected to raise tens of millions of dollars for wildlife protection, habitat conservation, anti-poaching efforts, combating invasive species and mitigating wildfires. It would also compensate ranchers for cattle killed by wolves. The bill’s sponsors – Rep. Mark Owens (R-Crane) and Rep. Ken Helm (D-Beaverton) – join us to share why they support it and why they revived it this year after it died in the final days of last year’s session. Jason Brandt, President and CEO of the Oregon Restaurant and Lodging Association, also joins us to share his opposition to the bill.
Chuck Zodda and Marc Fandetti analyze a stronger-than-expected January jobs report that showed 130,000 new jobs added and unemployment falling to 4.3%. With wage growth running hot and GDP trending above potential, the discussion turns to whether the Federal Reserve may need to hold rates higher for longer — or even consider future hikes if labor market strength continues. Luke Kawa of Sherwood News also joined the show to explore rising investor anxiety around artificial intelligence, including whether AI could disrupt software, finance, and knowledge-based industries faster than markets expect. Later in the hour, the hosts discuss mounting federal deficits, growing consumer credit balances, and the long-term risks tied to persistent government borrowing.

Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
Savannah Schuring, or Snazzy Cat, took on an Appalachian Trail thru-hike–which she completed in a remarkable three months–as her graduate thesis. On the way, she was interviewing hikers as to their motivations to be out on the trail and learned so much from them, and about herself, with some fascinating conclusions. Savannah always loved the outdoors and, indeed, was a long-distance runner, but she came to love long hikes and completed her Triple Crown. Her new book, Between the Miles, is available on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G3MCZS73 . You can also check out her website at http://savannahschuring.com , while you can connect with her on social media at https://www.instagram.com/direct/t/117946462927501/, or at https://www.instagram.com/direct/t/17846517893892959/ Our Hike the Good Hike member this week is Jim Wellman, who, like Steve, is attempting an Appalachian Trail thru-hike this year, starting about a month after Steve. Jim is open about his personal mental health struggles, and hope to reach others in a similar situation. You can follow Jim on several social media platforms on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/jimsonanotheradventure/ and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/jimwellmanPADI. He also has a YouTube channel, which you can find here, https://www.youtube.com/@jimwellman76310 Finally, our Accountability Blog brings us up to date with the preparations for my own hike on the Appalachian Trail next month. Welcome to the Find Your Fierce Podcast, where you will discover your fierce, unlock an unstoppable mindset, build unbreakable courage, and completely transform how you show up every single day. I'm your host, Jill Allen, and I'm so glad you're joining me today. This episode is for you — the person who keeps doing "all the right things" but still feels tired. The one who's productive, responsible, dependable… and quietly stretched thin. The one who wonders when enough will finally feel like enough. In this conversation, I'm talking about success — not the version we're rewarded for chasing, but the kind that's aligned, sustainable, and actually life-giving. We talk about how burnout isn't really about working too hard — it's about chasing the wrong definition of success. How we internalize beliefs like earning rest or tying our worth to productivity, and how those agreements slowly steal our presence, our peace, and our capacity to be fully here with the people we love and with God. I share how over-functioning shows up in our relationships and faith, why true success looks more like obedience and inner steadiness than constant output, and how freedom comes when we stop carrying assignments that were never ours. We also explore how limits, habits, and intentional pauses aren't weaknesses — they're what build trust, clarity, and alignment over time. This episode isn't about doing more. It's about stopping what was never yours to carry. It's about choosing faith over frenzy, presence over performance, and a pace that doesn't cost you your health, your family, or your soul. This is an invitation to redefine success… and to live from that definition on purpose. Key Takeaway: "You don't burn out from doing hard things. You burn out from doing hard things for the wrong reason." -Jill Allen "God does not measure success by how much you carry. He measures it by whether you are carrying what is actually yours." -Jill Allen Check out my favorite health must-haves HERE! This week I'm capturing a new trail and the rare snowy weather for my area with Sheba. She absolutely loves the snow and can't get enough of hiking out here! I also discuss some more of the dreams that I've been having since I've been battling the heavy sleep for the past couple of weeks. Sometimes I feel like human beings have a natural period of low energy during the winter. I hope you are having a good day whenever and wherever you happen to listen to this chapter of Terpene Therapy!Support the show
The Reserve Bank has lifted rates, and if you've got a mortgage, you'll feel it fast. A typical borrower on a $600,000 loan is up around $90 a month for a single hike, and if more follow, the hit multiplies. Is inflation really back, or is the Bank overreacting? And what would more hikes do to jobs and house prices?Guests: Michael Pasoe, writes for Michael West MediaCherelle Murphy, the Oceania Chief Economist for the consultancy firm EY
In a recent episode of The Smart Property Investment Show, hosts Phil Tarrant and Liam Garman examine the implications of the Reserve Bank of Australia's latest interest rate hike on property investment. Tarrant acknowledges the widespread media concern but argues that shifting economic conditions can also create opportunities for strategic investors. Garman points out a rise in the Consumer Price Index from 3.4 per cent to 3.8 per cent, warning that inflationary pressures, driven by energy prices and housing costs, could lead to further increases. The pair explore whether the move signals the start of a gradual upward cycle, noting that rates often follow a fluctuating "sawtooth" pattern as the RBA works to stabilise the economy. They also highlight government spending and market liquidity as key contributors to inflation, with Garman suggesting Australia's tightening stance is unusual among major Western economies. The discussion raises concerns about the 5 per cent deposit scheme, with both warning that it could expose first home buyers to negative equity if property values fall. Tarrant further urges caution around the super saver scheme, stressing the importance of disciplined saving, budgeting, and living within one's means. Ultimately, they conclude that while higher rates present challenges, informed and adaptable investors may still find opportunities in a changing market. In this episode, you'll hear the stories of three men whose lives were deeply impacted by the Seacoast Men's Hike—stories of honesty, courage, unexpected grace and healing from sexual addiction, and the pain of past sexual abuse. The hike is a powerful experience where men leave their cell phones behind and spend three nights trekking through mountainous wilderness with a single goal: seeking God together. Ladies, there is a women's hike for you, too. Along the way, the conversation takes some interesting turns: a fascinating piece of Civil War history tied to one guest's family, a memorable encounter involving a very angry bull, and the the light-hearted shame one has about his home state—especially in light of South Carolina's vocal disdain for it. This is a conversation about healing, brotherhood, and what can happen when men are willing to step into the wilderness—together.
