Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

If a person is going through a difficulty and he feels like his world is crashing down around him, the best thing he could do is strengthen himself like a lion and go on with life happily. Hashem is the One who has brought about the difficulty for the person's benefit. If he believes that, it would give him the strength he needs to move on. Initially the person may feel that he has nothing to look forward to and would rather just stay home and mope around. However, usually, there are hidden presents waiting to be given by Hashem in those situations, but in order to access them, we need to do our part first. Although the Greeks tried to defile every jug of oil in the Beit HaMikdash, Hashem hid one from them. That was the hidden present waiting for us to discover. If the Jewish People would make teshuva and want to serve Hashem like they were supposed to, Hashem had that miracle jug sitting and waiting for them. A young woman who grew up in a certain part of Canada went to seminary in Israel after she graduated high school and became very friendly with a nice group of girls from Brooklyn, New York. Many of her siblings had already moved to Brooklyn, and that's where she wanted to be as well. After she finished seminary, she found a job in Brooklyn and a place to live, but she was not yet a U.S. citizen. She would periodically travel back to Canada to visit her parents. The last time she tried to come back into the U.S., she was stopped at the border. She was questioned as to why she had been spending so much time in the U.S. The last time she was there it was for over six months straight. They were not happy with her answers, and they ended up putting her in handcuffs. After a lot of questioning, they eventually let her go, but said she would never be allowed into the U.S. again until she could prove that she was actually living in Canada. They wanted pay-stubs from a job in Canada which she did not have. At that point, her heart dropped. Her whole life was in Brooklyn – her job, her friends, and she was currently trying to find a shidduch there as well. Where she was from there were not so many religious Jews on her level and, besides, she didn't want to live there anyway. She did have one sister who lived in Montreal, and she decided to go live with her until she could figure things out. While at her sister's house, she was very depressed. She didn't want to do anything productive because she thought, what was the point, she didn't want to be there. After two weeks, somebody gave her a lot of chizuk in emunah, and that gave her the strength to pick herself up and continue living life the way she is supposed to. She found a job in the neighborhood there which she enjoyed very much. At that job, she met a woman who suggested a relative of hers as a shidduch . The woman said he is currently in Toronto, but he has dual citizenship, and his life is in Brooklyn. The young woman looked into it and accepted the offer. Last week she got engaged to this boy. Now, she's going to be allowed back into America through marriage. She is going to live in the exact place she wants to be, she is getting her old job back and she is looking forward to being happily married. What she thought was the worst possible thing for her was actually Hashem leading her to the hidden present He had waiting. She needed to pick herself up first to access it. It was the chizuk in emunah which gave her the strength that she needed. It was specifically her getting up and moving on with life that led her to meet the person who would eventually suggest the shidduch she is going to marry. There are hidden presents waiting for us all the time. Very often, it's our emunah in those times of difficulty which help to lead us to finding those presents.

The Hidden Tax of Inflation

On today's show we're talking about the hidden taxes that result from printing money. Those who have studied history will know that any time you debase the currency by printing, it has the effect of destroying the fabric of a society. This has happened throughout history time and again. While the rate of inflation has been somewhat low over the past decade, we've been living with it. But we've also gone through two major movements that have caused a reduction in costs. The first movement has been the technology revolution. If you think back to the 1980's, even the most basic of personal computers was priced at $4,000. That was a huge sum of money at that time. It was the equivalent of two months of salary at that time. Today, you can buy a much more powerful computer for under $1,000. Each generation of technology innovation has in fact lowered the cost of many durable goods and lowered the cost of many capital expenses. The second movement has been the globalization of manufacturing. In the 1970's, most manufactured goods were sourced locally in the same country. China was still a captive economy. Japan was the first country to start exporting manufactured goods in a large way. Today, most of our consumer goods are made in low cost geographies in Asia. Manufacturing was outsourced to Japan until Japan was too expensive. Then manufacturing was moved to Taiwan until that was too expensive. Then manufacturing went to China in search of lower cost labor. With its vast population, China seemed like an infinite pool of low cost labor until costs in China went up. Manufacturers then went to Malaysia then Thailand and the Philippines and Vietnam and India. Today, Bangladesh supplies more than its fair share of clothing. We kept driving down manufacturing costs with access to lower cost labor. But eventually, that band-aid solution eventually runs out when there is no more cheap labour left to exploit. We are not there yet. There are a lot of people still earning a lower wage than in the west. But it will happen eventually. When you have inflation, there are six hidden taxes. But these taxes don't apply equally to everyone in the economy. 1) There is a transfer of wealth from the lender to the borrower. 2) Some Assembly Required 3) Government is the biggest borrower of all. See #1. 4) Capital Gains Tax on assets priced higher due to depreciating currency. 5) Understating CPI means less money for entitlement programs 6) Holding bonds on central bank balance sheet skews market forces for interest rates.

Have you ever suffered from inattentional blindness? It's a real thing. I can remember looking for my wife in a crowd once, and I was pretty sure I knew what color shirt she was wearing. I kept looking for that shirt color, and failed to notice my wife who was nearly right in front of me, simply because she wasn't wearing what I thought she was. This Sunday we'll be reading Luke 13:18-35 and it addresses inattentional blindness in a way. When it comes to the Kingdom of God, if we refuse to adjust our attention, we may miss what God is up to.In this chapter, Jesus talks about small seeds, the invisible process of yeast, few being saved, a narrow door and the least of people. There's a message about the nature of how God's Kingdom works in there…what do you think it is? How might our expectations cause us to miss the work God is doing in and around us? What can we do to temper our expectations? The whole section finishes off with Jesus lamenting over Jerusalem. Much of this lament is forecasting the events of 70 AD when Jerusalem was destroyed – but it carries another revelation in it….that God doesn't take pleasure in judgement. What does his lament for Jerusalem speak to you about God's character? What does the image of a hen gathering her chicks speak to you about God's attitude toward humanity?I hope you can join us this Sunday as we explore this fascinating section of Luke!Click here for a pdf of the teaching slideshow.

Luke 21:25-3625“There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. 26People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in a cloud' with power and great glory. 28Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”29Then he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees; 30as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. 31So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. 33Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. 34“Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, 35like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. 36Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. Joan Ifland. With the publication of her textbook, Processed Food Addiction, Dr. Ifland is considered to be the world's leading expert in processed food addiction. Backed by new technology developed in the textbook, Dr. Ifland has developed cutting-edge innovations in online programs addressing compulsive overeating and diet-related diseases.  With the introduction of RESET WEEK and the Daily Addiction Reset Community (Daily ARC), Dr. Ifland has brought recovery from compulsive overeating to a new level of effectiveness.   Her programs are easy to access. They save time and money for members while engaging participation for the long run. Members who have not had control over food since early childhood are now able to eat planned, healthy meals.  In this episode, Dr. Ifland talks about the inspiration behind her career in processed food addiction. If you're starting to ditch processed foods, it can be hard to go out with friends or be at home with your family for the holidays. It would help if you started associating processed foods with how they make you feel. Dr. Ifland dives into how the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry are making people's health much worse. After that, she became a yo-yo dieter. She would try only to eat 1200 calories a day. However, this was making her processed food addiction worse. There are court documents that reveal companies took the tobacco addiction model and transferred it to sugar for children. It's not normal to think about food when you're not hungry. Americans think about food obsessively. After ditching processed foods, Dr. Ifland got rid of her brain fog, bloating, and a sinus infection. Plus, she was losing two pounds a week. Over 70% of the country in the US is now overweight or obese. Americans are deeply addicted to processed foods, and they don't even know about it.  [12:25] You Need To Associate Processed Foods With The Pain You Feel Just because everyone is eating something, that doesn't mean you should eat it too. You need to associate certain foods with the pain you feel from them. For instance, “I don't eat that because it gives me a headache.” You want to retrain brain cells to associate foods with the pain you feel.   [16:55] You Can Addict Any Human To Any Substance If You Get Them Young Enough Smoking used to be the leading cause of preventable death globally. Now, diet-related diseases are the leading cause of death in the world. Smoking and diets are based on the same business model. The business model goes like this: Advertising Availability Affordability Young age of onset Hidden addictive product formulation The younger someone is when you addict them, the harder it will be for them to overcome the addiction. [32:20] Overeating Is An Addiction Done To You By The Food Industry It takes years to go to a social situation and not be bothered by people eating processed foods. The conformance tribe is significantly activated by food and by people you know well. The better you know a person, the more likely they will be able to trigger you into eating something bad. Overeating and diet-related diseases were done to you for profit by the food industry. [36:45] Free Donuts For Anyone Who Gets A Vaccine!   There is corruption in the pharmaceutical industry. 60% of Covid deaths are in people who have an underlying diet-related condition. People wouldn't have been able to eat enough processed foods to get a condition unless their addiction was driving them. The message to the world should have been about metabolic health. The addiction business model is also used by the pharmaceutical industry. [42:10] True or False: Sugar Addiction Is Not A Real Thing Dietitians are the “professional” arm of the processed food industry. The medical community is the marketing arm of the pharmaceutical industry. 40% of dietitians work for the processed food industry. If you've been to a conference for dietitians, they are sponsored by Kraft and Nabisco. Luckily, many dieticians are rebelling against processed foods. Check out Processed Food Addiction: http://processedfoodaddiction.com/ Read the Book Processed Food Addiction: https://www.amazon.com/Processed-Food-Addiction-Foundations-Assessment/dp/0367503425/benazadi-20 [45:00] The First Steps To Breaking Food Addiction It's a very difficult process of acceptance, breaking through all the insanity you see out there and accepting that it's a severe addiction. Processed food addictions are deliberately made worse by the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry. You need to go and ask for help to recover from your addiction. Also, you need to be really patient on your journey. Lastly, you need to incorporate healthy living into your life. [51:40] When Can You Start Eating Sugar Again?  People think that they will always want sugar. If you give up processed foods, then you will stop the cravings. Only 1% of the food in a grocery store is actually food. The rest of it is all drugs. Overall, Dr. Ifland says to have hope. Electronic Distribution Date: February 2007 Printed & Bound Distribution Date: February 2007 This updated version of Childhood Shadows, a book first published in 1999, adds new details to a compelling account of the Black Dahlia murder-one of Hollywood's most infamous unsolved crimes. Combining personal experience as a close friend of the victim, Elizabeth Short, with in-depth research, Childhood Shadows brings a unique perspective and opens up an intriguing new area of speculation about who the killer may be. Author Mary Pacios sets the stage by recreating the neighborhood she shared with Elizabeth "Bette" Short during the years of the Great Depression and World War II. The war ends, but instead of peace, the horrendous murder of the young and beautiful Elizabeth Short send shock waves through the nation. Years later, haunted by the unsolved murder of her childhood friend, Pacios sets out to discover the true circumstances surrounding her friend's brutal death. Because of her personal relationship with the victim, Pacios gains access to officials close to the case who discuss with her unpublicized details of the murxder and their own privately held theories of who killed the woman known as the Black Dahlia. The research Pacios expects to last only a few months turns into a strange twenty-year odyssey that explodes many of the myths surrounding the victim and her murder.Appendices include photographs, official documents, synopses of the various suspects and an extensive annotated bibliography. .

Yesterday Sikh Women's Aid launched a report into domestic abuse and child sexual abuse within the Sikh community. Conducted via anonymous surveys sent out over the summer, the survey of nearly 700 respondents showed that 70% had experienced domestic violence and 35% had experienced child sexual abuse or exploitation. To tell us more about this report and what can be done to help the issue, we're joined by the co-founder of Sikh Women's Aid and co-author of the report, Sahdaish Pall. Writer and historian Sheila Rowbotham helped start the Women's Liberation Movement in Britain. She organised and spoke at its first conference at Ruskin College, Oxford, she went on to encourage night cleaners to unionize and she wrote many ground breaking boojavascript:void(0)ks, including Women, Resistance and Revolution, Woman's Consciousness, Man's World and Hidden from History. This all happened in the 1970s and Sheila writes about it in her second and latest memoir, 'Daring to Hope: My life in the 1970s'. She joins Emma to discuss the many momentous feminist events of that decade. We used to have YOLO, then FOMO, now we have HOGO. Post lockdown, the fear of missing out no longer plagues us. We have become too comfortable sitting on our sofas watching TV. The effort of putting good clothes on and leaving the house is too much. This hassle of going out (HOGO) has been blamed by the hospitality industry for an increase in the number of no-shows at restaurants and paid-for live events. We talk to psychotherapist and author of Happy Relationships: At Home, Work and Play, Lucy Beresford and actor Sadie Clark whose play, Algorithms, is on at Soho Theatre in December. Motherhood and elite sport has felt like a taboo topic for many athletes in the past. Now official pregnancy guidance for Olympic and Paralympic athletes and sport governing bodies has been introduced for the first time by UK Sport. To discuss why this has been introduced now and how it will impact elite sportswomen, Emma is joined by five-time Olympic archer Naomi Folkard who contributed to UK Sport's consultation for the guidance and The Telegraph's Women's Sport reporter Molly McElwee. The judgment on the SEISS discrimination verdict appeal is expected today at 10.30am. It follows a claim by the campaign group Pregnant Then Screwed of indirect discrimination due to the way the Self Employed Income Support Scheme was calculated. Introduced in spring 2020 to give financial help to self-employed workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the group argued SEISS was unlawful because it disproportionately affected women who had not worked because of their pregnancy and childbirth. God is hiding. But why? He hides under the veil of secrecy and silence so that we will diligently seek Him. He does not choose to compete with the distractions of the world since He wants you to choose Him as your one desire. Desire to seek Him, hidden in your heart, hidden in the holy Sacraments, hidden in the silence and hidden in the people whom you encounter throughout your day. The Lord is there, waiting for you to discover His Heart filled with unfathomable Mercy. Seek Him with all your might (See Diary #1591).Ponder the hidden presence of God today. Be aware of the fact that the presence of God is all around you, constantly calling to you and inviting you into His Heart. If you allow yourself to become disinterested or distracted by the world, you will never discover how close He is. Reflect upon His hidden presence and do not hesitate to seek Him today.Lord, I love You but at times I fail to live that love fully. I become so very distracted by things that mean little in the end. Help me to regain my focus and to seek You with all my Heart. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: www.divinemercy.lifeCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. As U.S. employers continue to struggle to find workers, they may want to turn their attention to populations who have the skills they need but lack proficiency in English. This describes many people in immigrant and refugee populations who are currently overlooked by employers and make up part of what is called the "hidden workforce." On this episode of WorkforceRx, Katie Nielson, PhD, joins Futuro Health CEO Van Ton Quinlivan to describe how she works with employers to tap the potential of this talent pool. Nielson has a growing sense of urgency on this issue due to the fact that by 2030, every baby boomer will have reached retirement age and 97% of net workforce growth will be immigrants and their children. “The biggest barrier to integration in general and, definitely to promotion and advancement in the workforce, is English skills,” she says. “If we think about English as something that we can do to help upskill our workforce, then we'll be able to get those learners not just the English skills but also the workforce skills that they need to succeed.” Tune in to learn about Nielson's blend of tech-enabled study and interaction, the wisdom of taking a “backwards design” approach, and how workplace-based language programs can help employers achieve goals around diversity, equity and inclusion.
