If you've been spinning in survival mode, holding it all together while slowly running on empty, this episode will help you find your way back to yourself. When I called over 100 Motherkind listeners recently, burnout came up again and again. It's become such a common part of motherhood, but it doesn't have to be this way. So in this episode, I've brought together three incredible voices to help us understand burnout, spot the signs early, and start to heal from it. First, Dr Claire Ashley, known as The Burnout Doctor, shares her own story of burnout, the signs she missed, the science behind what's really happening in our bodies, and the steps she took to recover. Then, Rhiannon Lambert, one of the UK's leading nutritionists, opens up about her own experience and what true nourishment looks like when you're completely depleted. And finally, I share the tool that changed everything for me, how to complete the stress cycle, so your body and mind can finally rest, reset, and recover. This conversation is for every mother who's ever felt like she's running on empty. Burnout isn't who you are; it's a sign that something needs to shift. And you deserve to feel better. In this episode, you'll learn: The early signs of burnout and how to catch them before you crash What's really going on in your body when you're burned out How food, rest and self-compassion support recovery The simple tool to complete the stress cycle How to take small, doable steps towards balance again Chapters: (00:00:00) Intro - Why Burnout Matters (00:05:01) Expert 1 - Dr Claire Ashley (00:06:17) The Six Triggers of Burnout (00:08:46) Expert 2 - Rhiannon Lambert (00:10:44) Listening to Your Body (00:12:28) Rebuilding Your Energy (00:15:38) Expert 3 - Zoe Blaskey (00:16:10) Complete the stress cycle Remember to subscribe to Motherkind — it helps more mothers find the show and keeps our community growing. Stuart shares how years of pain and imbalance became the catalyst for deeper awareness and how he helps others reconnect with their body's natural intelligence. This episode bridges the gap between fitness and feeling, performance and peace, strength and stillness.⸻Time-Stamped Show Notes00:00 – Introduction: The Science of FeelingBryce opens the conversation with the question: What if true strength begins with awareness, not effort?04:45 – Stuart's Story: From Injury to InsightStuart shares how back pain and surgery led him to discover the wisdom of the body and the power of awareness.“Pain isn't punishment, it's information.”11:20 – The Modern DisconnectExploring how many people live from the neck up, disconnected from their body's signals and trapped in survival mode.“The nervous system can't heal in survival mode.”18:50 – Practice One: Current StateHow awareness is the first step toward transformation and why most people are training compensation instead of capacity.“Awareness is the first rep of transformation.”27:10 – Practice Two: Waiting for the Nervous SystemLearning to slow down, create safety, and let the body open naturally instead of forcing adaptation.“Force tells the body what to do. Safety invites it.”36:30 – Practice Three: Equal and OppositesFinding balance through contrast: effort and ease, inhale and exhale, light and dark.“Balance isn't stillness, it's movement in harmony.”44:20 – Practice Four: IntegrationTurning insight into embodiment and understanding why awareness must become action.“Wisdom doesn't live in knowing, it lives in doing.”53:00 – The Art of Play and PresenceHow reconnecting to play restores energy, creativity, and presence.“Play is the purest form of presence.”59:10 – Tools for ReconnectionPractical breathwork, movement, and daily rituals to restore balance and self-awareness.“Breath is the remote control of the nervous system.”1:05:00 – Closing ReflectionsHow Stuart's approach helps people rediscover freedom, stability, and trust in their body's wisdom.⸻Key Takeaways    •    Awareness is the foundation of transformation.    •    You can't out-train a nervous system that doesn't feel safe.    •    True balance exists within contrast: strength and softness, effort and ease.    •    Pain is a signal that you've drifted away from alignment.    •    Breath and play are gateways to restoring natural harmony.⸻Notable Quotes    •    “Stillness is strength in disguise.”    •    “You can't heal if you're stuck in fight or flight.”    •    “Your body is wiser than your mind if you learn to listen.”    •    “Integration is the art of living your lessons.”    •    “Healing isn't about doing more, it's about doing what matters with awareness.”⸻Call to ActionIf this episode inspired you, subscribe to the ALLSMITH Podcast, leave a 5-star review, and share it with someone who's ready to come home to their body.Follow Stuart Champion:Website: wThank you for Listening! How does something as simple as a five-star rating system reveal subtle biases? When she's not teaching MBA and undergraduate students at Rice Business, Professor Sora Jun studies the hidden forces that shape how we see and treat one another. Her work explores how our minds process inequality and how even small design choices, like switching from stars to thumbs-up icons, can make systems fairer. Host Brian Jackson '21 sits down with Sora to discuss her research on the hidden bias of gig worker ratings, what she loves most about teaching at Rice, the findings of her latest paper and how her background has shaped her work. Episode Guide:00:00 Introduction to Sora Jun, Ph.D.00:58 Journey From Finance To Organizational Behavior02:20 Impact of Diverse Upbringing on Research05:05 Teaching Experience and Philosophy08:52 Research on Bias and Inequality17:50 Framing Inequality: Advantage vs. Disadvantage24:34 Exploring Anti-Asian Discrimination29:17 Future Research Directions30:56 Teaching Across Different Programs32:20 Final Thoughts and TakeawaysThe Owl Have You Know Podcast is a production of Rice Business and is produced by University FM.Episode Quotes:How embracing insecurity helped Dr. Sora on her research23:32: It actually took me a while to really feel like I had enough legitimacy in standing and studying this in some ways, because I felt like I did not really have the real, like, Asian American experience, given that I have been in so many different circles and I'm hearing so many different stories about what it means to be Asian for different people. But I think really embracing that insecurity almost was useful because I think it just made me dig in deeper and realize that might be part of that Asian experience—feeling like there are so many different kinds of Asian experiences. I'm sure this is similar for other groups as well, but I think I've just become more appreciative of just asking people, like, what's this been like for you? I started to do more qualitative-oriented work because of this, and I think that is helping me sort of reaffirm my own, I guess, standing and studying this topic. Why the way we talk about inequality matters14:52 [Brian Jackson]: Why does framing matter so much when talking about pay gaps or wealth disparities?16:08 [Sora Jun]: So, framing of inequality matters because even though what is being talked about is logically equivalent for an advantage or disadvantage frame, people understand it to be very different. And then they focus on different, I guess, objects. On balancing the fairness of the gains of a binary system with the loss of nuance13:36 [Sora Jun]: I think that's a really tricky part. I do think it is a challenge if we were to imagine changing all these numerical rating scales to dichotomy scales. We would lose a lot of the fine-grained information. So it probably depends a lot on the context. I think from our study, what we were finding was that the ratings using a five-point scale were already quite inflated, so there was not actually a ton of fine-grained information to be had from even the five-point scale information.Show Links: TranscriptGuest Profile:Sora Jun | Rice Business

Our bodies hold onto trauma, toxins, and pain for biological reasons—not willpower. Dr. Aimie Apigian shares her bathtub breaking point and the 3-phase Biology of Trauma® framework that changed everything: how to prepare, open channels, and safely release what our nervous systems have been protecting us from. After her third collarbone break in a 2017 car accident, Dr. Aimie found herself back in depression, chronic fatigue, and developing chronic pain—despite years of therapy and functional medicine work. Crying in a bathtub, she realized her body wasn't broken; it was scared to let go. This episode reveals her discovery of the hidden connection between emotional toxins, psychological toxins, and biochemical toxins—and why our nervous systems hold on to all three. You'll learn the exact six-step process that moves through preparation, opening drainage pathways, and active release, plus why forcing detoxification before our bodies feel safe makes symptoms worse, not better. This framework bridges somatic healing, nervous system regulation, and functional medicine for both individuals struggling with stored trauma and practitioners helping clients who feel stuck. Whether we're dealing with chronic pain, autoimmunity, insomnia, or anxiety that won't shift, or we're therapists or health professionals seeking trauma-informed approaches, this episode explains how to create a biology of letting go. Dr. Aimie shows us how to work with our bodies' protective wisdom instead of fighting against it—so we can finally experience the freedom, authenticity, and healing our nervous systems have been waiting to feel safe enough to allow. In this episode you'll learn: [03:32] Why Your Body Holds On: The relationship with the past that serves survival and the parts that aren't ready to let go [07:00] The Body Trauma Loop: Nervous system pattern of looping between stress and overwhelm that keeps you stuck holding on [12:37] Holding On to Regrets: How regret creates bracing and collapse in the body and why it's one of the hardest things to release [14:58] When Life Didn't Go as Supposed: The deep sadness of holding on to how things were meant to be instead of what is [19:21] The Biggest Myth About Letting Go: Why letting go isn't a decision you make but a biology your body needs to feel safe enough to create [20:33] Three Types of Toxins We Hold: Emotional toxins, psychological toxins, and biochemical toxins all accumulate the same way in your body [23:32] Why Bodies Hold Biochemical Toxins: When you have a biology of holding on emotionally, you also hold mold, metals, parasites, and environmental toxins [28:00] Three Phases of Letting Go: Preparation, opening channels, and deep cleaning—why skipping preparation makes everything worse [31:52] What Happens When You Detox Wrong: Fatigue, mood issues, sleep problems, and brain fog all worsen when deep cleaning happens without open channels [34:11] The Six-Week Process: Creating safety, building support, working with breath, pacing the release, feeling emotions, and active detoxification [38:45] Opening Drainage Pathways: Why poop, pee, and sweat matter for letting go and how constipation keeps trauma stuck [41:00] Always Do Phases One and Two: Why you should always be resourced with open channels even when not actively detoxifying Main Takeaways: Letting Go is Biology, Not Decision: Your body holds on because it doesn't believe letting go is safe yet, not because you lack willpower or haven't decided to move forward with your mind Emotional and Biochemical Toxins Connect: When you hold emotional toxins from regrets and psychological toxins from limiting beliefs, your biology also holds biochemical toxins like mold, heavy metals, and parasites The Body Trauma Loop Keeps You Stuck: Nervous systems that loop between stress and overwhelm without reaching calm aliveness create a biology of holding on rather than releasing Deep Cleaning Without Preparation Retraumatizes: Doing intensive trauma work or detoxification before opening your channels and creating safety brings pain to the surface without allowing it to leave, making symptoms worse Regrets Create Bracing and Collapse: Holding on to regrets shows up as simultaneous bracing in shoulders and collapse in chest and heart, demonstrating how past pain lives in present body Dysregulation Multiplied by Time Becomes Chronic Conditions: Twenty years of nervous system dysregulation creates autoimmunity, chronic pain, and long-haul syndromes through accumulated toxin burden that body won't release Three Phases Must Follow Sequence: Preparation creates safety, opening channels allows ventilation, and deep cleaning releases what's ready—skipping steps or reversing order causes more harm than healing Always Resource and Keep Channels Open: Even when not actively detoxifying, you should always be doing phases one and two to prevent accumulation and stay ready for life's hard experiences Notable Quotes: "If it makes you sick 20 years later, that wasn't stress—that was trauma. You see childhood through adult eyes now, but that's not how you lived it." "Trauma becomes our biology. Then our biology blocks our healing, joy, and authenticity."  "The more emotional toxins we hold, the more biochemical toxins our body holds—mold, plastics, heavy metals, parasites." "Deep cleaning without release retraumatizes us. We surface the trauma but don't let it leave. It makes things worse."  "Once we recognize we're holding on, the choice becomes clear: stay small and safe, or let go safely and live freely."  Episode Takeaway: Letting go isn't about willpower—it's biology our nervous system needs to feel safe to create. When we hold emotional toxins, our body creates a biology of holding on. That same biology holds biochemical toxins: mold, heavy metals, parasites. Our bodies don't distinguish between toxic emotions and toxic chemicals. Both require the same three-phase process to release safely. Preparation creates safety so our nervous system considers letting go. Opening channels provides ventilation so what surfaces can actually leave. Deep cleaning happens last because without preparation, pain surfaces with nowhere to go. This is why intensive trauma work or aggressive detox makes fatigue, mood, and pain worse. The key insight: always do phases one and two, even when not actively detoxifying. Keep our drainage pathways open to prevent accumulation. When we're emotionally or physically constipated, toxins build up instead of moving through. Letting go becomes a way of being—creating a biology that releases rather than holds on. She discusses the application and mentorship process, the support available from statisticians and CHNC collaborators, and early findings showing that infants with genetic conditions often experience longer NICU stays, more ventilator support, and greater feeding challenges. Dr. Metzler highlights the potential for genetic testing to refine diagnosis, guide care, and inform families, while emphasizing the need for larger datasets and multi-center collaboration to advance understanding in this complex population.Support the showAs always, feel free to send us questions, comments, or suggestions to our email: nicupodcast@gmail.com. In this episode of The Sacred Speaks, host Dr. John W. Price sits down with pioneering therapist and author Terry Real, whose decades of work have redefined how we understand men, relationships, and emotional life. Nearly thirty years after the release of his groundbreaking book I Don't Want to Talk About It: Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression, Terry reflects on the evolution of men's inner worlds, the cultural forces that still shape them, and the courageous work required to heal. This conversation moves between the personal and the collective—between the suffering of individual men and the systems that taught them to suffer silently. Together, John and Terry explore how patriarchy has halved both men and women, severing men from their emotional lives, and how healing requires a return to connection, empathy, and embodied relational practice. Through heartfelt stories, clinical insight, and grounded wisdom, Terry calls us toward a new model of masculinity—one rooted not in dominance or disconnection but in courage, accountability, and love. This episode is an invitation to anyone longing to understand the hidden pain of men and the pathways toward relational wholeness. Key Themes -Male depression as a covert epidemic—often masked by addiction, anger, or withdrawal rather than sadness. -How patriarchy teaches men to fear vulnerability and equate worth with production, control, and performance. -The intergenerational inheritance of silence and shame between fathers and sons. -Why true intimacy depends on empathy, humility, and repair—not dominance or emotional avoidance. -The call for a new relational culture that honors interdependence and shared healing.
