On this episode, I sit down with LA based outdoor adventurer, award-winning writer/editor, and Basecamp Outdoor founder/CEO Ali Carr at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook. Ali takes me through her Southern California outdoor roots - skiing Big Bear, camping, backpacking - then how a year in New York City led her to Outside Magazine and a mountain-filled life in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She breaks down how Basecamp Outdoor is an inclusive digital community connecting outdoor brands with industry curious job seekers through its Facebook group, newsletter, events, office hours and brand interviews, the Career Collective, and the Base Camp Match job board, plus what she's seeing in hiring and why intentional networking beats “spray-and-pray” applications. Ali also shares standout adventures (Grand Teton, Smith Rock, Patagonia), local gems (Red Rock/Topanga, Chantry Flats/Sturtevant Falls, Cedar Grove, Leo Carrillo tide pools), her Outside story on her father's disappearance at sea, surviving cancer in 2023, and her new birth doula project, Wild Grace.Stay Updated with Ali Carr, Basecamp Outdoor, and Wild Grace on IG: https://www.instagram.com/chasingalicarrhttps://www.instagram.com/basecampoutdoorjobshttps://www.instagram.com/lovewildgraceSign up for Basecamp Outdoor Newsletter: https://tinyurl.com/4kskrukfJoin Basecamp FB Group: https://tinyurl.com/4whchwyeLearn more about Basecamp Outdoor on https://www.wearetheoutdoorindustry.com/Learn more about Wild Grace on https://www.lovewildgrace.com/Follow Just Trek on https://instagram.com/just.trekShop Just Trek merch on https://www.justtrek.net/shopBecome a Just Trek Patron member on https://www.patreon.com/justtrekListen to more podcast episodes on https://www.justtrek.netWant to send me a message? Scott Leibfried's grandfather sold the family business at 60 with more money than he'd ever seen. He was generous, he lived long, and he ran out. That story is why Scott has spent 28 years in wealth management — and it's why he wrote Climbing Wealth.Episode SummaryIn this episode, Gabe sits down with Scott Leibfried, a Midwest-based financial advisor with 28 years of experience, to explore the parallels between mountain climbing and financial planning. From the moment Scott summited Long's Peak without a guide and couldn't wait to get back down, to guiding clients through the retirement red zone, this conversation is full of practical lessons about what it takes to navigate the second half of your financial life. Listeners will walk away with a clearer picture of what a real advisory team looks like, what triggers people to finally get serious, and why the descent matters just as much as the climb.About Scott LeibfriedScott Leibfried is a financial advisor and wealth manager with 28 years of experience, based in the Midwest. He grew up in eastern Iowa working in his family's agricultural business and attended the University of Northern Iowa before entering the financial services industry. Over his career, Scott has built a multi-generational, multi-specialist advisory team focused on financial planning, investment management, tax strategy, and estate planning. He is the author of Climbing Wealth, which draws on his experiences summiting mountains including Mont Blanc, the Grand Teton, and Grand Paradiso to illustrate the decisions that define financial success. What We CoverHow Scott's grandfather selling the family business became the origin of his entire career — and what two small decisions would have changed everythingThe shift from a commission-driven industry to a planning-first model, and why it matters for clients todayWhat happened on Long's Peak without a guide that convinced Scott to never climb — or advise — alone againThe retirement red zone: the five years before and after retirement when the most consequential financial decisions get madeWhy a real advisory team is built across generations and specialties, not just people sharing a copierThe story of a client who retired at 58 against one advisor's advice — and used those five years before his death to live fullyResources MentionedClimbing Wealth by Scott Leibfried — available on AmazonConnect with Scott LeibfriedEmail: scott@climbingwealthbook.comSupport the show

Two RISK! stories pulled from the archive, and both are worth your time. "The Best of Adventure Stories #3" is funny and unsettling in equal measure, sometimes within the same story. Winter Tashlin was 16 years old, at a Jewish summer camp in New York, and desperately wanted one good day. The plan was the Empire State Building and a performance of Les Mis. He has Tourette syndrome, the city is unforgiving, and the day keeps getting worse. Meanwhile, Marshall York drove solo across the American West, pitched a tent alone in the Grand Tetons, and went to sleep. Sometime in the night, a voice started speaking to him from inside the tent, calm and close and saying something he could not explain. Send us Fan MailA late-race surge, a flow-state descent, and a new home with the bird—this conversation with Jane Moss is pure momentum. We kick off with Black Canyon 50K where Jane, still two weeks removed and sore in all the usual places, explains how a volume-first, low‑workout block set her up to race by feel. She breaks down the risk of going out hot, the mental game of tuning out hype, and the moment she finally spotted the leader's hat and decided to chase. It's a masterclass in pacing, patience, and trusting your body when the course is fast and the field runs deep. From the desert to the Pyrenees, Jane takes us inside her 2025 Worlds experience: a chaotic mass start, a wasp's nest stinging the pack, and a short trail course that felt more like a sky race—steep, technical, and unforgiving. She shares how early course previews paid off, why she managed effort to protect a top‑ten finish, and how running with teammates in Spain reinforced the habits that keep her sharp: sleep, simple routines, and a clear head. The confidence shift is obvious—she's not just a mountain specialist anymore; she's versatile on fast terrain and happy to prove it.Then we climb. Jane details the Grand Teton FKT: five total reps in a month, dialing lines through boulder fields and saddles, and testing how her head handles exposure. A rival's quick mark dented confidence, but a tight weather window turned pressure into freedom. She climbed better than ever, hit the summit ahead of schedule, and descended in a rare flow state to set 3:45. That single day expanded her map of what's possible and set the tone for bigger mountain goals. We wrap on her signing with Arc'teryx and why it matters. Jane wants a brand that values both racing and ambitious objectives, and she's already feeding product teams real-world input on shoes for mixed terrain—think flatirons scrambles, Madeira's ridges, and fast 50Ks. Her 2026 plan blends it all: a true sky race in Spain, Madeira 56K, Minotaur, a Wasatch Whirl FKT attempt, CCC, and aspirational times on Longs and Whitney. From Robert Duvall's legacy and impact on Westerns to Adventures with me, Rebecca Wanner  aka BEC to then insight on why March is the best month to visit Yellowstone National Park. Stories of the West, travel, and adventure are on the schedule! Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka ‘BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Honoring the Godfather of Westerns, Exploring Life on the Trail with Rebecca Wanner, and Discovering the Best Time to Visit Yellowstone National Park Robert Duvall (1931–2026): The Godfather of Westerns Robert Duvall, 1931 - 2026, passed at age 95 on his horse farm in Virginia. Leaving a legacy on the silver screen from To Kill A Mocking Bird, The Godfather, to winning an Oscar for Tender Mercies… He had a love for westerns and horsemanship. Early in his career, Duvall noticed that actors in movies didn't have the right “seat” when riding horses and hence stunt doubles were relied upon. On his own accord, Duvall took up horseback riding and learning from those that taught stunt doubles, proper horsemanship which led to him owning a farm, raising horses and performing his own stunts for the movies.  Thanks to movies such as a cameo in the original “True Grit” to the epic mini-series “Lonesome Dove” and “Open Range”... Some have dubbed Robert Duvall as the Godfather of Westerns. How well do you know our, by far, favorite movie - Lonesome Dove where Duvall played Captain Augustus “Gus” McCrae, a Texas Ranger turned cattle rancher, a role that would earn him a Golden Globe How old was Robert Duvall during the production of Lonesome Dove? 58 years old Duvall starred alongside which actor in the epic Western Lonesome Dove? Tommy Lee Jones Tommy Lee Jones, another actor who was an experienced horseman that refused to use a stunt double in the movie. Favorite "Lonesome Dove" quotes by Augustus 'Gus' McCrae, Robert Duvall “It ain't dying I'm talking about, it's living.” “We don't rent pigs” "Any man who does rent pigs is....... he's hard to stop." "By God, Woodrow, it's been quite a party." “Ain't nothing better than riding a fine horse in new country.” Another favorite movie that introduced Robert Duvall to a whole new generation was “Secondhand Lion”. Highly recommended family film… and a quote  that stands out from these old bachelor uncles was Duvall, “We're old, Damnit. Leave us alone.” Adventures of Rebecca Wanner aka BEC Our host, Rebecca 'BEC' Wanner, of The Bend Show shares adventures on her bucket list and stories of past adventures. We learn that she has a fear of heights, so flying an ultra-light plane will not be happening. Rebecca Wanner aka BEC has done snorkeling and hopes to gain her scuba license some day. Adventure wise she shares her own version of Planes, Train, & Automobiles when attempting to fly home from a summer abroad only to be left backpacking, hopping trains, outrunning security guards to finally find her way home at the age of 20 before smartphones thus no cellphones either. Fun Stories! YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK: Why is March the best month to visit? Spring is when bison calves are born, and bears with cubs start to emerge from hibernation. The vegetation in March is still thin, so elk and moose are easier to spot. March is also one of the best months to see wolves in Lamar Valley. Plus no crowds, due to chances for snow and colder temperatures. Open year-round: North Entrance (Gardiner, MT) to Northeast Entrance (Cooke City, MT) A quick google search will show that there are multiple tours throughout the off-season in Yellowstone. Because interior park roads are closed to private vehicles, popular guided options include snow coach tours, snowmobile tours, and educational wildlife safaris. Same goes for visiting the Grand Tetons. Sit back, do a tour and take in the scenery! OUTDOORS FIELD REPORTS & COMMENTS We want to hear from you! It's an honest, funny, and deeply practical conversation that moves from emus on leashes to cameras on social trails, from pacer debates at Western States to how influencer marketing is reshaping who gets seen and paid.Michelino opens up about the craft of coaching: building durable athletes with VO2 work, smart plyometrics, and week-over-week progress you can actually feel. Kia ora e te whānau. What a way to kick off 2026 with this awesome conversation with Goat Tongariro winner Jackson Cole. Jackson spoke with Matt from his base in Missoula, Montana. We touched on the usual topics like training and racing. Still, the conversation primarily centered on Jackson's history and ethos—from Wellington to Colorado and beyond —rooted in adventure, the joy of experience, and a love for wild mountain terrain. He spoke about valuing the simplicity of running over gadget obsession, preferring to listen to his body and embrace what the day brings, and his love of a well-earned off-season, something foreign to many Southern Hemisphere runners. We all stand on the shoulders of giants, and, interestingly, for a relatively younger athlete, Jackson takes a postmodern approach to running media, rejecting the absolute truth of the ultrasphere and social media whilst being a professional athlete. Jackson's love of classic New Zealand books on running—he referenced Rod Dixon and Dick Quax during our conversation, and the former's famous quote of wanting to drink beer and train like an animal—alongside the more recent (but still relatively old by today's standards) of Anton Krupicka and Kilian Jornet running up the Grand Teton, was a refreshing and inspiring viewpoint. We dare you to listen to this and not be stoked. I love Wyoming. I went horseback riding with a woman named Eileen to a ridge where we could see the Grand Tetons from a handful of miles away. That's the image for today's episode. I think about this moment a lot. It is probably the furthest I have ever been from our "modern" society. No cell service for hours, making connections with another human, connecting with nature, and just enjoying this once in a lifetime experience. But not in just the context of where I was, but life in general. How strange it is to be at that moment in time, at any point in time, for anyone that has the pleasure to exist and coexist on this planet. How strange it is that two people, one who sits most days in an office (myself) and one who spends her summer wrangling horses on beautiful pastures (Eileen), can share a moment like this. How strange it is that these grand mountains, existing for whatever reason beyond myself, captivate me and stand so tall. How strange it is that this beautiful creature enjoys taking me for a stroll on its back. How strange it is that this is how our ancestors lived normal daily life. How strange it is that everything seems so interconnected. How strange it is that any of this exists at all. How strange it is to be anything at all. Tell me about your strange life: (608) - 856- 4955
