Roxy's Ride & Inspire RAWcast - Mountain Bike & Mindset Podcast
Can mountain biking help you recover from burnout - or could it secretly be making overwhelm and exhaustion worse? In this episode, we touch on the neuroscience of burnout and boreout, proven ways to rebuild skills, inner stability, and joy on the bike and how burnout impacts your nervous system, decision-making, and overall well-being. As a full-time mountain bike coach and certified mental trainer, I've worked with hundreds of riders—some of whom came to me during or after burnout. Here's what you'll learn in this episode: What burnout and boreout really are — and how they show up in your body and brain Why decision fatigue can lead to exhaustion and poor choices How mountain biking and what type of skills training can support recovery The ways riding can actually worsen burnout What warning signs to look out for if your rides are doing more harm than good A type of coaching that helps riders rebuild confidence, control, and calm - which can reduce burnout symptoms If you've ever wondered:“Why do I feel worse after riding?” “Is mountain biking helping my mental health—or draining it?” “How do I get back in control when life and riding feel overwhelming?” … then this episode is for you. Shimano has released the latest version of its long-running, iconic XTR group, the brand's flagship mountain bike set. XTR Di2 M9200 finally brings Shimano into the age of wireless shifting for mountain bikes.Anytime Shimano releases a new top-end group, it's big news. But the Japanese brand's mountain bike groups have, historically, foreshadowed what eventually shows up on dropbar and other bikes. Disc brakes? Clutch? 12-speed? 1-by? All started on trails before hitting tarmac. So with XTR being the brand's first fully wireless groupset (Dura-Ace is semi-wireless, with wires running from the main battery to the front and rear derailleurs), everyone at the CCM office is paying close attention. In this episode of the podcast, you'll hear how the group was developed and about some surprising, innovative and maybe mildly controversial (for Shimano, at least) design decisions. All these details come from Nick Murdick, Shimano's North American product manager and a member of Shimano's global product development team. Murdick has been driving the development of XTR Di2 M9200, all the way back to its origins in 2015 with XTR Di2 9050. Murdick gives candid insights into some of the internal debates at Shimano, some changes to the team's culture there and how they're reflected in XTR M9200. He even addresses the elephant, or Eagle, in the room of why it took so long for Shimano to respond to its biggest competitor with a wireless mountain bike group. It's an interesting conversation, especially considering the details covered about gears, brakes and levers. Dive in, then check out mountain bike editor Terry McKall's full review of XTR Di2 M9200, as well as his thoughts on what this means for the future of Di2 across Shimano's range and electronic shifting more broadly. And, for even more good stuff, check out this interview from our archive with long-time Shimano rider Geoff Kabush.
If you're anything like me, you've likely longed for a time when you could leave everything behind and hit the road, actually live the van life. I've got you covered. This episode is for you. Today, I'm speaking with Brent and Alan Klein from VanDoit, who take travelers to better places through trustworthy, modular van designs tailored to each story. Facebook Twitter Instagram Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! Sign up for my Newsletter HERE I'd love to hear your feedback about the show! You can contact me here: rick@theoutdoorbizpodcast.com What Happened: I used to think van life meant dropping everything, quitting your job, and driving off into the sunset with a dog and a dream. You know, the stuff Instagram makes look effortless. But then I met people who lived something different—more real. Like hauling their kids to soccer in the same van they use for weekend mountain biking trips. Or using it as a mobile showroom by day, then a cozy crash pad by night. It hit me: this isn't about escaping life—it's about expanding it. Making your van fit your life, not the other way around. That's when I realized... van life doesn't have to be all or nothing. It can be everything. Principle: The best adventure vehicles don't just take you places—they evolve with your life. From hauling mulch to hauling mountain bikes to hauling kids, they meet you wherever you are. Van life isn't about living out of your van. It's about living more fully because of it. Transition: But here's the thing… Most people think van life means going all-in, Instagram-ready sunsets and full-time nomadism. And that belief? It's holding them back. They either think it's “not for them” or they try to DIY their way into it and end up elbow-deep in wiring they should've never touched. That's why: That's why we dropped this episode of the Outdoor Adventure Lifestyle Podcast—to show you a more authentic path. One that's rooted in decades of experience, real-life usage, and a design philosophy that's more about living than it is about lifestyle labels. Call to Action: Still dreaming of freedom but stuck thinking you're “not the van type”? Listen to this episode. Colorado Outdoors - the Podcast for Colorado Parks and Wildlife
Colorado Parks and Wildlife owns and operates the largest inventory of dams in the state of Colorado. The water impounded is used for purposes such as downstream irrigation, fisheries management and aquatic operations, and a multitude of recreational activities including fishing, boating and swimming.CPW manages more than 120 dams across the state and has spent more than $126 million in the last decade for dam safety related work. All of this work helps keep downstream communities safe while providing recreational opportunities in Colorado's reservoirs and on tailwater fisheries. Without these dams creating reservoirs, the state would have significantly less water-based recreation opportunities, as there are only 11 natural lakes in Colorado greater than 50 surface acres. In this episode of the Colorado Outdoors Podcast, we chat with Dam Safety Program Manager and Chief Dam Safety Engineer Eric Eisinger as well as Capital Program Manager Margaret Taylor about what it takes to monitor and manage Colorado's inventory of dams.Come for the great information, stay for the beaver jokes.

Alan shares a personal milestone (achieving a fitness age of 50!) and dives into his love for mountain biking – an exercise that feels like playing. He uses his experience to draw a powerful analogy between the often extreme portrayal of mountain biking on social media and the curated "highlight reel" often seen in the dental world online. Alan discusses how comparing ourselves to these curated images can lead to feeling "less than," whether it's watching downhill racers pull off impossible stunts or seeing dentists showcase only their most complex cases. The core message? It's okay to find joy and fulfillment in your version of biking or dentistry, even if it isn't "Instagram-epic." You are enough, and your "bread and butter" work is valuable. Key Points: Alan's journey from reluctant runner to avid mountain biker (including surviving being hit by a truck!). The joy of finding exercise that feels like play. The danger of comparing your "insides" to others' curated "outsides." Finding contentment and value in your current practice style or skill level is valid and important. While pursuing new skills is great if you want to, don't feel pressured by online comparisons. You are enough, just as you are. When you combine X Games gold medals, restaurant dreams, and a DIY teardrop trailer built in a garage with hand tools from Home Depot—you get Escapod. In this episode, Tyler Jorgenson sits down with Jen and Chris Hudak, the powerhouse couple behind Escapod Trailers, to unpack their rugged road to success. From competitive ski slopes to the rocky startup terrain of entrepreneurship, Jen and Chris share how their unique talents (and willingness to sleep in tight quarters with two kids and a dog) helped them build a cult-followed adventure brand. But don't be fooled—this isn't your average glamping origin story. We dive into their startup days launching in a mother-in-law's garage, the art of risk-taking, and what it's like to find product-market fit by accident while racing mountain bikes. They share the real behind-the-scenes of growing a business as a married couple, evolving past founder mode, and how they're scaling Escapod into a high-performance brand while keeping their marriage, sanity, and camping gear intact. As they gear up to launch their new mountain bike-specific trailer at the Sea Otter Classic, Jen and Chris reflect on the highs, the whack-a-mole challenges of founder life, and why sometimes your customers know better than you do. Plus, find out who their dream brand ambassador is (hint: think cliffs, cameras, and killer calves). Whether you're an adrenaline junkie, gearhead, or weekend warrior dreaming of a side hustle—this one's a wild ride.Key TakeawaysFrom X Games to Escapod: Jen's competitive drive and Chris's resourcefulness collided to create more than a company—it sparked an aspirational lifestyle brand for adventure seekers.Build it and They Will Ask Questions: Their original trailer wasn't built to sell—but became a business idea after it attracted attention on mountain biking trips. For Episode 190 we have Chris Riley from Central Maine. Chris is the president of the Central Maine Chapter of the New England Mountain Bike Association, and a board member of the New England Mountain Bike Association. Two days before Emilly Johnston won the Argentario instalment of the Internazionali d'Italia Series, she chatted about all the new changes that have occurred in the past seven months. As the 2024 mountain bike world championships began at the end of this past August, Johnston signed with the team she'd race with in 2025, Scott-SRAM MTB Racing, the squad of Nino Schurter and Filippo Colombo. The two-year contract came just as the rider from Vancouver Island's Comox Valley was nearing the end of her final under-23 season. Her first year in the elite level would truly be with the elites of the sport.Johnston covers a wide range of topics In this in-depth interview. How had the geography of her home region shaped her as a rider? Why did she do a cool trick in a high-stakes race? Does she tie her own flies for fishing? Johnston talks about some of the people who've had a big effect on her career, including an innovative bike builder on Quadra Island. She shares her insights about the current state of Canadian women's cross country mountain biking and how, in a sense, she has two lives: a European one and a Comox Valley one. Also in this episode of the Canadian Cycling Magazine Podcast, editor Matthew Pioro and writer Jake Williams chat about recent races. Milan-San Remo, men's and women's, were stunning events. XC racers had many successes in the UC Cup races in Fayetteville, Ark. Gent-Wevelgem is coming up. It's a race that Williams, a Luca Paolini doppelganger, has a particular fondness for.For more on one of Johnston's cycling influences, head to the podcast's back catalogue. In August 2020, two-time world champion Catharine Pendrel was featured. The episode, quite rightly, is titled “Catharine Pendrel is awesome.” Check it out.

I discuss the importance of personalized training for women in mountain biking with Dr. Liz Koch, Physiotherapist and Strength & Endurance Training Expert. We talk about the significance of understanding movement patterns, biomechanics, and some common misconceptions in coaching and training, address a tailored approach to strength training and skills development, particularly for women and riders aged 40+, and explore how small adjustments in technique can lead to significant improvements in performance. We also touch on the difference between being a skilled rider and an effective coach, advocating for a deeper understanding of biomechanics and movement in sports training and mountain bike instructor certifications and look at some possible causes as to WHY some coaches teach so superficially. Colorado Outdoors - the Podcast for Colorado Parks and Wildlife
In April 2024, Colorado's 2024-25 Long Appropriations Bill opened the door for a new Colorado Parks and Wildlife statewide K-9 program. The new statewide K-9 program will have a lead K-9 Supervisor and five K-9 handlers assigned to the new statewide unit. This comes on the heels of the success of CPW's previous pilot program in which CPW utilized three dogs.K-9 officers aid CPW wildlife managers in detecting the presence of wildlife, whether that's checking hunters or even identifying endangered species in the field. Along with assisting in wildlife law enforcement cases, dogs can also be used in black bear management.CPW recently promoted former District Wildlife Manager Ian Petkash, who handles K-9 Samson, to the K-9 Unit Supervisor position. Petkash joins the podcast to let us know plans for expanding the K-9 program and provide a better understanding of how CPW's wildlife officers utilize dogs in the field and what it takes to build the program.

This episode is the audio from my video, "It took me 20+ years to realize what I'll tell you in about 10 minutes." And honestly? I wish I had heard this pep talk two decades ago. I want to save you YEARS of frustration - those painful moments of feeling like a failure, pushing yourself into rides you THINK you should do, but that actually hold you back. In this episode, I share: - Why I felt empty chasing the wrong goals - and how you can avoid that trap. - How to truly enjoy every ride, no matter your level. - Why you're NEVER too old to improve (and why you should keep evolving until your last ride). - How I finally found real happiness in biking and life. - Why I do what I do - and how this realization changed everything. This is probably THE most important lesson I've ever learned—and it took me AGES to figure out. But you can get it all in just 14 minutes.
