The latest Organic Farm Scheme is open to tillage farmers against the backdrop of an EU target to have 25% of all land in organic production by 2030 and on this week's episode of the Tillage Edge, Elaine Leavy, an Organic Specialist in Teagasc, joined Michael Hennessy to discuss organic tillage in more detail. Firstly, she highlighted the fact there are some very successful organic tillage farmers but that planning is the cornerstone of organics as there are no quick fixes. For any grower who is considering organic production, then talking to existing organic farmers is a good place to start. Elaine also explained that there are ‘in-conversion' payments of up to €260/ha and other capital (TAMS) grants and off farm processing grants available to organic farmers.
