In this deeply resonant episode of the Finding Harmony Podcast, hosts Harmony Slater and Russell Case are joined once again by two of the most beloved teachers in the world of yoga and Buddhist philosophy—Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor. Together, they explore the eternal question: What does it mean to be truly happy? Drawing from decades of yoga practice, philosophical inquiry, and embodied living, Richard and Mary illuminate how joy, contentment, and interconnection arise not from seeking, but from sensing—from tuning in to the subtle patterns of breath, body, and awareness. From stories of moody teenagers and Michelin-star meals to the nature of embodiment, the group shares moments of insight, hilarity, and grace. You'll hear how depression and suffering shape our paths, why mindfulness without embodiment can sometimes harm more than help, and how “looking again” may be the most profound spiritual practice of all. Whether you're a longtime yogi or simply curious about how to live with more presence and compassion, this episode offers a grounded, heart-opening invitation into the field of happiness that lives within each of us. Richard Freeman joins the show to discuss the OASIS plan as developed by the Schiller Institute to try to bring peace to the Middle East. We know that peace has not been achieved by all the methods whether diplomatic or militaristic and things seem to be getting worse. So why not try the OASIS plan which would be a cooperative effort to bring salt water in, desalinate it, and then provide clean fresh water to the Palestinians, Israelis, Jordanians, Egyptians, Syrians, and more to irrigate, drink, and what water does. Then Rich discusses a 60-year-old plan to bring water, that would rain into the ocean, from Alaska to the southwest US to help irrigate and support sustainable vegetation and reduce the impact of the fires.

Mary Taylor and Richard Freeman join us to share timeless insights exploring how impermanence and interconnectedness form the foundation of a meaningful life. With wisdom rooted in years of spiritual practice, they reflect on the paradox of happiness – not as something to chase but as a natural state revealed through presence and self-awareness. Our conversation invites us to look beyond rigid structures and external validations, embracing tools like meditation and community to uncover the essence of joy. It's not about perfection or mastery but about showing up for the practice of being present with ourselves and others. In this shared space of connection, we find the courage to hold life's grief and beauty side by side. Through their reflections, Richard and Mary remind us that happiness is not static but a living tradition within us, nurtured by intention and care. Richard Freeman returns to the show on this episode as we discuss the recent Centre for Fortean Zoology expedition to Tajikistan on the search for one of the Euroasian mystery cats. The Caspian Tiger's range used to encompass the land from Turkey in the west all the way across southern Asia to the western borders of China, but was sadly declared extinct in 2003. Yet, witnesses claim to have both seen and had encounters with this lost big cat and Richard and his colleagues headed out for the third time to the northern parts of Tajikistan to look for evidence of this beautiful creature's survival against the odds. Welcome to this week's episode of the Mixtape with Scott! Episode 9, season 4. And I just did the math, and we are at 113 episodes so far since I started. What a fun journey it's been too. So many interesting people, so many interesting stories, so much fun to connect with them and be, for just one hour, getting to hear them all. For those new to the podcast, this is a podcast about the personal stories of living economists where I listen to them share parts of the arc of their journey. Primarily as their life moving towards being an economist and having been one. It moves between the personal and professional in whatever way feels right at the moment. And this week's guest is Francine Blau. Dr. Blau is the Frances Perkins Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations and Professor of Economics at Cornell University, and she's had a long and prolific career studying two overlapping topics — labor economics and the gender wage gap. She is, if I can say it, the labor economist's labor economist. Deep labor economics, relevant, empirical, pioneering. I can only imagine what it must have been like to be in the room with her at SOLE meetings and seminars from the very start. In the interview, we learn a lot about her life. We discussed what it was like at Harvard in the early 1970s, why she chose Harvard over MIT, her father's difficult story as a teacher in the NYC during a difficult time in US political history involving the unions, certain university's bans on allowing women into their PhD programs (e.g., Princeton), and the importance that Richard Freeman had on her committee in what she ultimately ended up writing a dissertation on, which I'll explain in a moment. I promised her an hour, so some of the things I'd wanted to ask, like how she saw the credibility revolution emerge around her, I never got to get to. But I loved what we did get to cover, and wish I had had another hour with her. If I can geek out for just a moment, this is a bit of a longer opener as I normally write, but Francine Blau was truly a pioneer and I'll just mention one thing — her dissertation. I kind of knew that she was a pioneer because I knew about her full body of work, which is frankly gigantic, which was why I wanted to interview her in the first place, but to be honest, I really didn't know the start and that context at all. I think it's fair to say that she was one of the very first economists to be focused on the gender wage gap. I think maybe Claudia Goldin, which I'll mention in a second, would be an exception in that perhaps it's a tie between them. There had been obviously work on the economics of discrimination; that had been Gary Becker's dissertation topic at the University of Chicago in 1955. And Dr. Blau suggested that both Claudia Goldin and Yoram Ben-Porath had also worked on that, but in terms of timing, I think that Dr. Blau predates Ben-Porath but not necessarily Dr. Goldin. Dr. Goldin's first publication on the gender differences is a 1977 article in the Journal of Economic History entitled “Female Labor Force Participation: The Origin of Black and White Differences, 1870 to 1880” and I don't think anything Dr. Ben-Porath wrote when Dr. Blau had graduated in 1975 from Harvard. Probably of those two, it would be Goldin's JEH that would be the closest to something as in-depth and which had comparable calendar date timing as to what and when Dr. Blau published her dissertation (as a book in 1977), but very different in that it was contemporary, not historical, and it concerned women in the modern work place, and specifically within the firm itself. Dr. Blau's dissertation was unlike the current style of dissertations which is the “three essay” model. It was a book length dissertation which she published in 1977 entitled Equal Pay in the Office. It was a 1975 dissertation that far predates the work that would come much later on the personnel economics literature we associate with Ed Lazear and Sherwin Rosen. Her dissertation explores many topics that would've perfectly fit into that material, but predates it by maybe 10 years arguably, and focuses intently on gender wage disparities between male and female office workers in the United States. She in that dissertation, written partly under the guidance of the labor economist Richard Freeman, examined the extent of wage differentials in the office place, explores the factors contributing to these disparities, and evaluates the effectiveness of equal pay legislation in addressing gender-based wage inequality. I found a copy of it, which I think may be out of print, and am ordering it now, but from what I have been able to gather, it was way ahead of its time, and I mean that. Dr. Blau is a role model for many people, myself included. The steady march of her career, the consistency, the work ethic, the creativity — it's the hallmark of a great economist and great scholar. I asked her how she managed to do it and it was interesting what she told me — she attributed a desire to not let down her coauthors as part of how she's managed to maintain that steady body of work for the last 50 years. That's a lesson I'm going to try to remember going forward. This is again a great interview to share. Share with friends, family, students and colleagues, mentors, people outside economics, people inside economics. I was very inspired by the interview and hope you are too.Scott's Mixtape Substack is a reader-supported publication. Friedmann recounts her initial inspiration in India, where she was taught the art of chanting. Through regular discussions and deep exploration of the sutras, Friedmann began documenting her insights, writing consistently each morning for several years. The conversation highlights the organic development of her book, the discipline required for such a long-term project, and the profound impact of yoga on personal growth and community building.--Carroll Ann (Prashanti) Friedmann, BA, MDiv, E-RYT500, was educated at Vanderbilt University, Princeton Theological Seminary, and the University of Virginia. Welcome to season 3 of The Mixtape with Scott! A podcast about the personal stories of economists and the collective story of economics of the last 50 years. We are kicking off season 3 with a bang: an interview with the distinguished labor economist, Richard Freeman, from Harvard University. Dr. Freeman holds is the Herbert Ascherman Professor of Economics at Harvard University and serves as the Co-Director of the Labor and Worklife Program at Harvard Law School. As you'll learn, his educational journey started with a B.A. from Dartmouth in 1964 and went into a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University which he competed in 1969.Freeman's work has been pivotal in reshaping perspectives on labor economics and industrial relations. His book "What Do Unions Do?" co-authored with James Medoff in 1984, challenged prevailing economic views by suggesting that unionism could enhance social efficiency. This groundbreaking work has been supported by subsequent studies, highlighting the positive impact of unions on productivity in various fields. Freeman has also made significant contributions to understanding the internationalization of science, the dynamics of the scientific workforce, and the implications of an overeducated American labor market. This was a super fun and at times funny interview, and I hope you like listening to it as much as I had being in it. Thanks again for tuning in! Don't forget to like, share, follow, etc.! Scott's Substack is a reader-supported publication. Her story is terrifying. (The Romanian Poltergeist Girl) *** When you become a celebrity, you expect certain individuals to go past being fans and into being fanatics. Even stalkers. It's always been that way. Not even Clark Gable was spared – and one woman named Violet made his life a living nightmare. (Dear Mr. Gable) *** There is a rumor that Jacques Cousteau dove to the bottom of Lake Tahoe and filmed a creature but did not release the film saying that “The world was not yet ready for what's down there”. What is at the bottom of Lake Tahoe? (The Lake Tahoe Monster) *** There is a type of mass murder that draws true-crime connoisseurs like no other… familicide, more often called family annihilation. It is a crime that has invoked horror and fascination in equal measures. We head out to discover a cryptid we've never covered before in the company of our good friend Richard Freeman. The Gul of Tajikistan is a hairy bipedal hominid that has been seen for centuries across this mountainous land locked central Asian republic and has a reputation for violent encounters across the region. Richard tells us about the two expeditions he's undertaken with colleagues from the Centre for Fortean Zoology and the witnesses and encounters they heard about. The area is also alleged home to an alleged extinct big cat, the Caspian Tiger, but this is also being reported too. Thank you as always to Richard for joining me this week. Since childhood, he's had an instinct for expansion and growth. His interest in the human mind and self-inquiry ignited at age 14, after reading his first book on meditation written by Osho (Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh). Eventually, Kranti developed an interest in Yoga. In 1991, he travelled through India, and a few years later, he started a daily practice. In Milan in 1996, he took a one-year teacher training with Carlo Patrian, one of the yoga pioneers in Italy. A few years later, while in Berlin, he was introduced to the Ashtanga method and fell in love with the practice. Since then, although Kranti's yoga experience was complimented with the Iyangar method, Ashtanga became his daily practice and passion. Kranti moved to Copenhagen a few years later, teaching Ashtanga and Hatha Vinyasa. He taught different yoga enthusiasts, dancers, actors, and athletes; one of his regular students was the Crown Princess of Denmark, Mary Donaldson. In Paris in 2002, Kranti attended a workshop with Richard Freeman. He was deeply inspired by Richard's versatile and open approach to yoga and yoga philosophy, and the following year he traveled to Boulder, Colorado, for Richard's one-month intensive teacher training. This experience further deepened his understanding of the Ashtanga method, meditation, and philosophy. In 2004, he attended a course in Yoga Therapy at the Yoga Biomedical Trust of London, England. He worked with students with heart disease and was moved by the powerful healing aspect of yoga as a complementary alternative therapy. Since 2005, Kranti has routinely studied in Mysore, India, under the guidance of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and his grandson Sharath Jois. He received Authorization Level 1 to teach Ashtanga Yoga from Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in 2008, and on July 5th, 2010, Kranti received Level 2 Authorization. In 2012, Kranti was Certified by the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Institute (KPJAYI) – the only official institute in the world able to certify students to teach the traditional Ashtanga Yoga method by the Jois family. Kranti & Gabriele Severini, who teaches in Rome, are the only two certified teachers from Italy. As of 2012, only 38 certified teachers were recognised globally by KPJAYI. Kranti is also a registered teacher with the Yoga Alliance (RYT and E-RYT 500 hours), and he completed the Yin Yoga Teacher Training with Sarah Powers. Through his teachings, Kranti will help you tap into your own true, unique potential. “In addition to Yoga studies, Kranti has trained and self-studied ‘Life Coaching,' NLP, Body Language and psychology, incorporating aspects of these fields in his daily teaching and private lessons.”
The Vuelta a España is just around the corner, but before the focus switches to the final Grand Tour of the season there are plenty of other big talking points in the pro peloton. These are RadioCycling's latest headline stories...We start on familiar ground, with a look at the latest developments and rumours involving the Ineos Grenadiers, Soudal-QuickStep and, it almost goes without saying, Remco Evenepoel. What began as a quest by the British team to sign the Belgian team's leader is turning into something quite different and much more substantial. There's talk of a merger of the two squads, a move that could suit the key players on both sides and could, if confirmed, result in two billionaires joining forces in what would be the most super of teams. It's been a bad week for doping cases. On the heels of the Richard Freeman verdict, Belgian cyclo-cross star Toon Aerts has copped a two-year ban after testing positive for Letrozole, a verdict which doesn't bode well for his compatriot Shari Bossuyt, who now appears to be facing the same fate for the same product. Meanwhile, Jumbo-Visma GC prospect Michel Hessman has delivered a positive test for an unknown diuretic. We examine these cases and discuss where they leave the riders involved, their teams and the sport as a whole.Lidl-Trek have been arguably the biggest movers in the transfer market in August, and the raft of talent highlights that they've definitely not been shopping in the cycling equivalent of the middle aisle in your local Lidl. We hear from the team's head of performance, Josu Larrazabal, who reveals the thinking behind the arrival of seven highly experienced racers including GC leader Tao Geoghegan Hart and top sprinter Jonathan Milan, and of the team's hopes of becoming stage racing big-hitters. Finally, our super sleuth, Chris Marshall-Bell, is already thinking eight years down the line, to the 2031 Super Worlds. The UCI has said five countries from three continents are interested, and our journalistic bloodhound believes he's identified three of them, with the ruling body's home country admitting that it's very much in the running. We ask the question - are some or even all of successes amassed on Freeman's watch now tarnished?
Dane Cash and Kit Nicholson join Caley Fretz to discuss Mikel Landa, Fabio Jakobsen, and other big transfers, the MTB race start order kerfuffle at Worlds, and Richard Freeman. And of course, there's also another riveting edition of the Weekly Pain quiz. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
With a flurry of big name moves in the transfer market and 10 days remaining until a cast of the peloton's stars gather at the Vuelta a España, these are RadioCycling's latest headline stories...Following the announcement a four-year ban for former Team Sky and British Cycling doctor Richard Freeman for possession of a banned substance and lying to UK Anti-Doping investigators, we speak to Matt Lawton, chief sports correspondent of the Times, who has followed the case closely since 2016. We hear what impact this decision will have on Team Sky's legacy, whether Freeman is the "fall guy" in this affair, and if the identity of the rider for whom the batch of testosterone at the centre of this case was destined will ever be revealed. One of the buzz phrases in Scotland at the World Championships was "Tour de France". Another was “When is it coming back?” The British government is behind a bid to host the Tour's Grand Départ for the third time, the money is in place to support this, and now leading actors on both sides of the bid are openly talking it. Is it a done deal? If it is, when might it happen? And could we have the answers to these questions on 25th October? A surprise debutant at the Tour de France, EF Education-EasyPost's James Shaw impressed hugely during the first half of the race, but had to abandon at the end of the second week after a heavy crash left him with severe concussion. The British rider tells us how the concussion protocols worked in his favour, about his return to fitness and reveals that two months on he's still affected by the impact he suffered that day.Support the show
Introduced to the basic principles of Hatha Yoga by his father while growing up in Little Italy, it wasn't until his mid-twenties that Frank Mauro began exploring asana postures and the philosophical underpinnings of the practice. In the 1990s, New York was in its heady day with studios opening across the city and giving birth to a new generation of conscious and creative yoga teachers, including a young Frank Mauro. His curiosity and interest in yoga ultimately led Frank to his first teacher training with the internationally recognized Sivananda Yoga Center and then eventually with many world-renowned teachers including Richard Freeman, Rodney Yee, Eric Schiffmann, Judith Lasater, and later in Manhattan with Cyndi Lee at the Om Yoga Center. Frank currently teaches at NY Loves Yoga Studio in the upper West Side of Manhattan. https://www.nylovesyoga.com.

Withdrawal of the Senses.Returning to Yoga-8, the limbs of practice, E61 is all about Pratyahara (the fifth limb) withdrawal of the senses. Even after decades of study, practice, and teaching, there are aspects of Yoga that are a constant curiosity, Pratyahara is one of them.Sherry & Theresa decided to go on a field trip before tackling this notion of sense withdrawal and went floating. That's right, floating. Floating is akin to what we used to refer to as a, “sensory deprivation tank.” That was the expectation, total sensory deprivation. While the hosts did not withdraw from all their senses, they talk a bit about how the focus of floating in darkness that is the same with eyes open as closed, had an influence on their sensory experience that opened doors to understanding Pratyahara in a new way.Floating offered a new language with which to offer clarity (or at least an alternate road to clarity). This episode touches on what Pratyahara is, how it can be practiced in the modern world, and benefits of practice. Pratyahara is the 5th of 8 limbs and is the first of the more contemplative practices. Talking about Pratyahara brought up other subtle body anatomy maps (chakras, koshas, and more) which curiously overlay each other in symbiotic ways.Pratyahara asks us to notice what we notice. This conversation covers some of the basics, but if you wish to understand Pratyahara (or any of these limbs) in a more scholarly way, absolutely find a teacher with whom you can do the deeper dives. “THE POLTERGEIST TORTURE OF ELEONORE ZUGAN” and More True Stories! #WeirdDarknessClick here to find Weird Darkness in your favorite podcast app: https://linktr.ee/weirddarkness IN THIS EPISODE: Between the years 1925 and 1927, a young teenage girl named Eleonore Zugun from Romania, became the most closely observed, investigated and tested poltergeist victim of the 20th century.
