This week we hear from Sarahlee Lawrence, who runs a full-diet CSA plus events like longtable dinners on the farm she grew up on in the town of Sisters, Oregon. She took the livestock elements her parents pioneered, and added vegetables and more, so they can fill out the menu year-round for their full-diet CSA members and farm-to-table dinner events. Which is all the more impressive due to the fact that the central Oregon high desert climate is not an easy one to grow in, with little precipitation and frost a possibility almost any day of the year.Sarahlee emphasizes the role of her team and apprentices in managing the diverse operations of the farm, as well as the unique culture that has developed around it. She discusses the challenges and realities of farming in a frequently smoke-affected region, the complexities of navigating regulations for animal products, and the management of dairy production, in addition to many greenhouses of vegetables and field production. She also shares insights into their unique full diet model that emphasizes community engagement and sustainability, as well as the evolution of hosting events on the farm to foster connections through food. In this conversation, Sarahlee discusses the intricacies of managing events on her farm, the importance of creating memorable dining experiences, her journey in writing a book, the challenges posed by climate change, and her deep love for farming. Vegalogue is a regular podcast from vegetable, potato and onion industry peak body AUSVEG, where we examine the pressing issues and latest developments in our sector.Historically, Australian producers have been rapid adopters of new technology and innovation, and the current generation is no different. Growers are looking to new agricultural technologies, or agtech for short, to help them confront the pressure from climate change, labour shortages, rising input costs and changing market demands. The technologies being explored read like a list of TED Talks keywords; artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, drones, big data, the internet of things…Understanding, sourcing and trialling these new technologies can be time consuming and costly, however, so in 2024 Hort Innovation launched a $4.1 million levy-funded project to help Australian vegetable growers adopt advanced mechanisation technology.Run by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries over three years, the project will deliver field days, showcase events, demonstrations, international study tours, webinars and more to help growers engage directly with the latest equipment and manufacturers. In October 2024, the project took a group of 16 vegetable growers on a study tour to the US, where they attended the FIRA-USA International Forum for Agricultural Robotics in California. One of those growers was Dan Hodges from Peninsula Fresh Organics in Victoria. Dan's an enthusiastic adopter of new tech on the grower's two properties on the Mornington Peninsula, and we spoke to him about the promising agtech he saw in the US, and the potential for applying in Australia.Learn more about the project discussed in this episode: Advanced vegetable mechanisation program to maximise labour and cost efficiency (VG23003)Thanks for listening to Vegalogue! #199: Paul Holmbeck's talk from our event, Real Organic: A World Movement, which took place at Churchtown Dairy this September, is a straight shot of strategy aimed at increasing organic crop plantings and food sales. Paul's experience as the (former) Director of Organic Denmark has him considering many effective paths that the US organic movement could adopt to move the needle and generate real impact here in the States. After moving from North Carolina to Denmark, Paul Holmbeck served as the Director and Political Director of Organic Denmark for 20+ years. His involvement in political strategy, policy development, and market initiatives have helped to protect organic agriculture, vital ecosystems, and the nutritional health of the Danish population. Paul currently serves as board member for IFOAM International and works hard to ensure that those who claim their products and services benefit the planet's climate are being true to their word.To watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://realorganicproject.org/paul-holmbeck-at-churchtown-2024-getting-organics-on-the-offensiveThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000 Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

There are calls for more discussion around genetic modification. An Institute of Economic Research report, commissioned by Organics Aotearoa New Zealand, reveals genetic modification could reduce the value of primary sector exports by up to $20 billion a year. It estimates GMO-free branding adds an extra 59% on the value of our exports. Organics NZ chief executive Tiffany Tompkins told Mike Hosking there's a range of opinion on the subject. She says the Government should slow down, open up the conversation and include farmers more proactively so we can understand the cost-benefit analysis. Jeff is back from his tour of Iceland, Scotland, and England—just in time for snow in Alaska! Speaking of snow, the guys discuss how it isn't necessarily bad for gardens. Known as "poor man's fertilizer," snow acts as an insulator, adds nitrogen to the soil, and releases nutrients slowly as it melts. This slow release is more beneficial than rain due to reduced runoff. After the break, the guys discuss some popular holiday plants, including the ever-famous poinsettia. Finally, the team answers a listener question about protecting shrubs from heavy snowfall. All this and more on this episode of "Teaming with Microbes."**********************************************Have a question? Katie Kulla is the author of Farm-Raised Kids. A brand new book from Storey Publishing. Katie is also an illustrator, one of the hosts of the Growing For Market Podcast and farms with her husband at Oakhill Organics on Grand Island in rural Dayton, Oregon. In this episode, we do discuss Katie's brand new book but we also talk a lot about Katie's experience growing seeds and how that experience has changed over the years. Katie's early seed experience was mostly growing seed contracts on her market farm. Katie liked how seed crops occupied a different time and space than growing vegetables for CSA or farmers markets. And also how seed crops often generated more $ per square foot than vegetable crops. Then when Oakhill Organics moved to offering a full diet CSA, they moved out of seed contracts and shifted to growing seed for food such as grains, beans, and popcorn. And now that the farm plays a smaller role in Katie's life and she is focusing on other interests such as writing books, Katie is still harvesting seed whenever it is easy to do so from the crops in her fields. This brings us to Farm-Raised Kids, Katie's new Book. We talk about the dream and the actual reality of having kids on the farm. How there is an idyllic vision that children can just chill out and hang around the fields but having kids on your farm is actual work and farms can also be dangerous places for little ones. Katie talks about how it is still an amazing opportunity for kids to grow up on a farm. How they pick up so much knowledge about different crops and food bit by bit over the years. And how kids wind up learning real skills like how to handle knives and breaking down just about any vegetable. Katie also explains how satisfying it is for kids to put their hands in gooey fermenting seed tomatoes or getting to hit dry beans with a stick to thresh them or just getting to sink their arms in buckets of clean seed. In the deep dive, we talk about growing dry beans for seed because Katie's family just loves eating dry beans and there is really no comparing the flavour with store bought beans. We talk about how bush beans are a lot easier than pole beans, how farming in the Willamette Valley with its dry summers means you can dry seed outdoors without cover in your backyard but how Katie might still bring seed indoors if she was still growing commercial seed contracts. And how she still wishes she'd invested in a good set of screens. Katie also has a reminder that you should make a point of not eating all your dry beans and make sure to keep some as seed for next year's crop! When you have a business that sells a product, you have two choices. You can try and sell it to everyone earth, like Coca Cola, or you can concentrate on a more targeted market. The Coca Cola model is called Mass Marketing. The targeted approach is called Niche Marketing. Sometimes businesses say they have a niche market as a euphemism for the fact that very few people are buying their product. But there are businesses whose products are legitimately very niche. Like, for example, human breast milk. Human breastmilk is intended to be consumed orally by human offspring. But it also has other applications. For example, it can be an ingredient in medicinal soap. When Shay Franklin had a baby, she discovered she was an over-producer of breast milk. When her 4 month of old daughter, Nova, was diagnosed with psoriasis and eczema, Shay used her surplus supply to make breastmilk soap. The soap worked miracles for baby Nova's skin condition, and Shay started selling her bars of soap to other people in need, on Tik Tok and at local farmer's markets. But even an over-producer only has so much breast milk. So, Shay came up with other recipes. Today her company, Shay's Organics, has a line of skincare products including soaps, scrubs, cleansers, body butter, and more. It seems popular these days for people who care about their diet to eat what is called a “plant-based diet.” If there's a growing number of people who predominantly eat plants, in a sort of horticultural revenge, there's also a growing interest in plants who eat meat. Beyond the well-known Venus Fly Trap, there are in fact a whole range of carnivorous plants. And there's a niche market of folks who love and care for them. Locally, these folks shop at a business called, We Bite Rare & Unusual Plants. The owner of We Bite is Carlos Detres. One of the knocks against living in a small city like New Orleans – compared to, say, Los Angeles or New York - is the limited range of goods and services available in a smaller place. The logic is, with a smaller population you have a smaller market to sell to. At some point the scale just gets too small to sustain a business for products that aren't in great demand. But when your whole reason for existing at all is a niche market – say, Black and Latina women with discerning organic skincare tastes, or self-identifying strange and peculiar people looking for carnivorous plants and fellow travelers – traditional market logic ceases to apply. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. Matthew is one of the original farmers of the Lemon Tree Organics. Matthew and his brothers farmed Lemon Tree before the name and brand were created, initially called Lemon Diesel. As Prop 215 evolved into Prop 64, Matthew navigated the switch, jumped through the hoops, and successfully ran a fully licensed farm in the Santa Cruz Mountains called Rasta Cruz Farm. He recently crossed the Lemon Tree with Wedding Cake and created Tree Flip. Matthew crossed the Lemon Tree with a GMO, a Garlic Mushroom. Then, those two cultivars crossed on each other, and Lemon Mash was born. Matthew grows organically in living soil and hand waters and hand trims the cannabis. Love is the first ingredient at the Rasta Cruz Farm.

Last week the guys talked about applying organics to the garden to nurture the soil food web. This week, they talk about another contributor to healthy soil: Springtails!Springtails are very small insects that break down organics by ingesting bacteria and fungi. They can also jump about 2 feet. This means when they jump around, they carry bacteria and fungal spores with them - which helps spread around the good stuff to the soil and gardens. After the break, the team dives into more discussions about things you can do to prepare your gardens for the fall / winter transition. This includes collecting brown and green piles for your compost, putting down organics, and staking and labeling your perennials. Finally, they answer a listener's question about planting micro-clover in the fall. All this and more on this episode of Teaming with Microbes!**********************************************Have a question?
