Welcome to EO Radio Show – Your Nonprofit Legal Resource. I'm Cynthia Rowland, and this is episode 123 of EO Radio Show. In today's episode, I welcome back Jennifer Nelson, a Senior Wealth Manager with BNY Mellon. Jennifer and I recorded this episode on Friday, May 9, 2025, and this episode posts on Monday, May 19. The investment world looks quite a bit different today than it did in May of 2024 when Jennifer and I recorded a general investment policy planning episode—and it's even a bit different than just 10 days ago, with the public securities markets continuing to swing up and down, but not quite as dramatically as in early April. When we recorded 10 days ago, Jennifer remarked on the state of the market volatility at the time. While this past week has been a bit calmer, we've also seen new surprises. A major new tax bill came out of Congress, with some potentially dramatic tax implications for foundation endowments—another new factor for investment committees to take into account. And more international talks and agreements developed, with the on-again, off-again tariffs and perhaps stabilizing international agreements on the horizon. Jennifer's remarks provide insights for investment committees and board members during these turbulent times. I hope you'll find some useful tips in today's episode. In this episode, Sara Houghteling (special projects coordinator in the Research and Academic Program) speaks with Jennifer Nelson, a poet and scholar of early modern art at the University of Delaware. Through the lens of their first book on Holbein, and a second, forthcoming, on Cranach, Nelson describes how comparative studies of elite cultural production can allow us to the see the category of art as capacious, and capable of dismantling our concept of mastery. They offer concrete advice on writing—from tone, to endings, clarity, and decisive punctuation—and speak about their own writerly process, in which ideas often manifest first in poetry and later in prose.

Kathryn interviews Author Lisa Gornick.Nine years have passed since Ana Koehl had sex with her pot-addicted anesthesiologist husband, seven since she began an affair with a gonzo journalist. She's gratified by her work as a book doula, but burdened by her belief that she need always be on call. Her elderly mother's birthday greeting is an inflation-adjusted calculation of the cost of raising Ana in a mice-infested house, her brother has hijacked the will of their recently deceased starchitect father, her adult child is changing rapidly before her eyes, and her best friend advocates for “the truth in lies.” Gazing out at the dark moat of Central Park from behind her desk, Ana sees that she can no longer postpone making peace with her past or confronting her present. Hailed by NPR as “one of the most perceptive, compassionate writers of fiction in America, Lisa Gornick brings us this engaging novel. Her essays have appeared widely, including in the NY Times, the Paris Review, Real Simple, and the Wall Street Journal.Kathryn also interviews Author Jennifer Nelson. We hear so much about teacher shortages, burnout, and the messy transition from pandemic Zoom learning back to the classroom. Ask fifty teachers and you'll likely get fifty answers but Jennifer Nelson brings perspective as someone who lived in Morocco (where she learned French as a child – the subject she teaches), served in the Peace Corp in Niger, and as the daughter of an international diplomat experienced more than American schools. Her tenure as a teacher also encompasses private, parochial, and public schools. Nelson brings a broader-than-usual view of what works and what doesn't in the classroom. She is a highschool French teacher and holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Columbia University, University of California, Berkeley and Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Come one, come all to the family hang of the century! Wyatt's sister Joy joins us for a rollercoaster of a conversation about mental health, politics, and gay stuff. Also on the agenda: Absolution Hour and poems by Bernadette Mayer and Jennifer Nelson.
All three of the panelists started by saying they try to be curious first. What else is going on in the person's life that they aren't able to do the thing they said they would? What support might they need? How can we bring this person around so they can do the thing? Try to meet people where they are. There is also something to be said for the relationship you have with the other person. If I know someone's character, I'm going to respond with that in mind. If I have an appointment with someone I don't know and they don't show up, I'll just send a note and leave it to them to come back to me. Ed Samuel added that you can send gentle nudges. Something that says, “hey, I was expecting this based on our conversation.” Both Chelle Shapiro and Jennifer Nelson talked about being recovering people pleasers and using or dealing with The Dirty Yes. We even got a little bit into sales and how you deal with people who say they will be back in touch but then aren't. How do you deal with people who say yes but then just don't? Endlich ein Doris Day Film.

Intro to "Women of Color and the Reproductive Rights Movement" by Jennifer Nelson. We learn, again, that there is so much to history that we have no idea about and, once we learn it, we have the typical "ah, shit" response. It's not going out on a limb to say that abortion is a complex issue, but it get so much deeper when we add in race and eugenics and the medical industrial complex, and on and on....so join us again with your seatbelts tightly fastened!

Witches, Episode #1 of 4. In 1973, two professors active in the women’s health movement wrote a pamphlet for women to read in the consciousness-raising reading groups. The pamphlet, inspired by Our Bodies, Ourselves, looked to history to explain how women had been marginalized in their own healthcare. Women used to be an important part of the medical profession as midwives, they argued -- but the midwives were forced out of practice because they were so often considered witches and persecuted by the patriarchy in the form of the Catholic Church. The idea that midwives were regularly accused of witchcraft seemed so obvious that it quickly became taken as fact. There was only one problem: it wasn’t true. In this episode, we follow the convoluted origin story of the myth of the midwife-witch. Get the full transcript at digpodcast.org Bibliography & Further Reading Samuel S. A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules. Broads You Should Know is the podcast about the Broads who helped shape our world. This week, Justin brings us the story of Jennifer Nelson: the documentary filmmaker who sued Warner Chappell over their claim of ownership over the song "Happy Birthday."Jennifer Nelson was working on My Super Sweet 16 when she decided to make a documentary about the origin of the song Happy Birthday. When she discovered that The Hill Sisters in Kentucky had written the song in the 1800s, but Warner hadn't filed a copyright claim until 1935, it seemed odd that she had to pay Warner Chappell to use a song she knew they hadn't paid the Hills for. What started as a documentary became a campaign to free the song from a company that was making $2M a year on royalties. Broads You Should Know is Hosted by Sam Eggers, Sara Gorsky, & Justin Xavier. FIRST THING: This episode is all about #PIMPINJOY, in honor of Amy’s mom's birthday!! Judy would have been 71 years old today and wouldn't believe all the amazingness that has come from her simple act of choosing joy while battling cancer. In the first thing Amy does a little #ThrowbackThursday from the Gracie Awards in LA in 2014. Even thought she was very sick, Judy was able to attend, which was very special. Amy shares audio of Bobby presenting her with the award from a video that Judy filmed (so the audio is extra special). In Bobby's presentation speech, we get a great explanation of what #PIMPINJOY is all about and why this patricianly moment was special for Amy. The audio also sets up what's to come in the second thing. SECOND THING: Amy shares an email that a listener sent in about her friend who has had a lot of difficult times in her life...but through it all...continuously choses JOY. The email is inspiring and then in true #PIMPINJOY spirit...Amy surprises the friend with some fun stuff...that's what #PIMPINJOY is all about...choosing joy...but also SPREADING JOY...whoop!!! THIRD THING: Amy couldn't do an episode about her mom without having her sister, Cristi, on. So Cristi joins in on the third thing to talk about honor loved ones that you've lost & finding ways to keep their memory alive. They also discuss what Cristi learned from the book “The Top Five Regrets of the Dying” by Bonnie Ware. And in a very special moment (totally impromptu) Cristi & Amy sing Happy Birthday to their mom. FOURTH THING: #PIMPINJOY apparel sales have been able to help A LOT of people and causes the last 5 years, over $2million donated. One of the beneficiaries was Capt. Nelson & his family after he lost his legs in Afghanistan. We came alongside Building Homes for Heroes to help build a new ADA certified hour for them. You may recall the camo #PIMPINJOY tee that was sold a couple of years ago?? Well, even if you're not, you will enjoy the update Amy got from his wife, Jennifer Nelson, during this thing. They are such an awesome family!!! This is where you get to see the affects that your purchases from #PIMPINJOY has on others! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JUDY!
