Welcome to episode 40 of The Filmumentaries Podcast. Now I am a lover of movie books. I own a lot of them. I have owned more than I now have. Some favourites include Alan Arnold's Once Upon a Galaxy - The Making of The Empire Strikes Back, Paul Sammon's Future Noir - The making of Blade Runner, Steven Bach's – Final Cut. So many to name. But what I didn't know, I am embarrassed to say, that I had no idea about fellow Brit author Jay Glennie's books on The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull and Trainspotting until pretty recently. A kind twitter follower mentioned Jay and his books. Immediately I could see that Jay had a great eye for the huge stills that are included within his books, but also that there was a clear and engaging narrative throughout. In late November 2021 Jay and I spoke over Zoom.https://www.coattail-publications.com/Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/jamiebenning)

With the sudden passing of the beloved Rutger Hauer, we decided it was important to commemorate his life and work, and of course the iconic characters he has portrayed in his acting career. Friend of the show and film historian Paul Sammon joins Dan, Patrick, and Jaime to reminisce on the life of the iconic actor. It's been a sad time for all of us fans, but we hope to spread some of Rutger's positive spirit with you and celebrate his life. The film Blade Runner was set in a dystopian 2019 Los Angeles. A timely gathering is in order. Three futurists sit down for a conversation on the film’s legacy and its relevance to Southern California. The guest speakers are David Brin, Paul Sammon and Mike Davis. They discuss the film’s influence and compare its vision with today’s 2019. Blade Runner initially underperformed in theaters when it was first released in 1982; some praised its thematic complexity and visuals, while others were displeased with its slow-paced narrative and unconventional plot. However, by 1992 it had become a cult classic and was re-released in newly edited versions. Why did it take a decade to find — or create — its audience? Series: "Library Channel" [Humanities] [Show ID: 34684]
