Ach, Paul!

[School of Movies 2026] Robert Rodriguez reaches his masterpiece. This film is truly magnificent as an adaptation of cinema to the aesthetics and hallmarks of this particular pitch black graphic novel series. It seems like every element combined in swift, smooth and effortlessly striking fashion as this sleazy, stark crime opera anthology drew on every skill Robert had learned over the 90s and somehow focused all of his haphazard digital work into one infinitely sharp point. The flourishes of colour and thundering automobiles hypnotising us like deer in the darkness of a snowy woodland road. It was also blessed with an astonishing cast; Mickey Rourke making a comeback that would lead him to The Wrestler (2008), Bruce Willis in one of his last great performances, Clive Owen at his snarling hungriest, Rosario Dawson setting the screen on fire, Benicio Del Toro as a powder-keg of entitled misogyny, Michael Clarke Duncan delivering a captivating Terminator-Bear hybrid, Rutger Hauer, Powers Booth and Nick Stahl as the most detestable richly-connected psychopath villains imaginable, and even little Elijah Wood chilling our blood by playing a sprightly cannibal who neither talks nor blinks. Bringing in Frank Miller himself and crediting him as co-director while humbly taking the mantle of the man who ‘Shoots and Cuts', Robert was able to make this feel extraordinary in a way its imitators, including Zack Snyder's 300 (2006) and Watchmen (2009), Frank Miller's own The Spirit (2008) and even Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For (2014) could not possibly match. And folks supporting us for five bucks on our Patreon bonus feed can, this coming weekend hear all about how that second film imploded.

In this episode of the show we are transitioning from discussing 80's fantasy to our February deep dive into 80's dystopian science-fiction. And you couldn't really ask for a better movie to kick off this series than the Ridley Scott-directed Blade Runner. Over the course of our conversation, which was just as ethereal and meandering as the movie itself, you will hear us talk about the many troubles this iconic cult classic faced when released, how the movie stacks up against the book, and where it brings novel material to the table. We also discuss Harrison Ford as a noir detective who wonders if he is real, Rutger Hauer as a haunting presence, the perils of listening to Vangelis while falling asleep and also how the movie prompted some of us to question the fabric of reality and wonder if we are all replicants after all. Brand expert, author, internationally recognized designer, and TEDx speaker Kevin Finn joins the show to talk about Blade Runner starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, M. Emmet Walsh, Daryl Hannah, Brion James, and Joanna Cassidy. Deckard, played by Harrison Ford, is brought back to an elite unit that hunts and retires rogue Replicants, bioengineered beings virtually identical to humans but often used for slave labor. We also discuss the movies Alien and Aliens, as well as Blade Runner 2049 and Barry Lyndon.-Kevin Finn is a brand expert, author, internationally recognized branding designer and TEDx speaker. Having begun his career in Dublin, he later moved to Sydney, where he became Joint-Creative Director of Saatchi Design, part of the Saatchi & Saatchi global network. From 2003-2018 he wrote, edited, and published the independent design journal, Open Manifesto, which included interviews, essays, and conversations with some of the most influential designers and global thinkers, including: Michael Bierut, Milton Glaser, Jessica Walsh, Edward de Bono, Noam Chomsky, ex-CIA operative Larry J. Kolb, and Neil Harbisson, a real-life cyborg, among many others. During a time when weblogs and Tumblrs had overtaken the design landscape Open Manifesto's print publication was a refreshing approach. In 2022, Open Manifesto, An Anthology was published by Formist. In 2007, Finn founded his independent design practice, TheSumOf, in remote Australia before moving to Brisbane in 2010, where he now lives and works. His award-winning book Brand Principles: How to be a 21st Century Brand was published in 2022. He is also founder and creator of DESIGNerd, the trivia app where the most influential designers test your knowledge and share theirs. Happy New Year everyone! Especially to you fellow listeners of the Holmes Movies Podcast. We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Years. Goodbye 2025. Hello 2026. Let's make this our year. Our plan was to make and record a festive Fascism On Film episode, but we decided to change our plans. On December 14th, filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle Singer Reiner were found murdered in their home. An absolutely shocking and tragic loss and crime. Rob Reiner made some terrific films and left a real mark on cinema with his work. Him and his wife Michelle were political activists. Michelle was an advocate and fought for LGBTQ rights and helped support wrongly convicted prisoners as part of the Innocence Project. Our hearts go out their children Romy and Jake. Along with paying tribute to Rob and Michelle, we also discuss actors who passed away in 2025 and honour them and their work. Then we end on a high note and talk about which films we saw in 2025 defined our year and made a good impression on us. We hope you enjoy this episode and stay tuned for more episodes in 2026. We will be recording more Fascism On Film episodes and also as Awards Season is around the corner, we will also be recording new Alternative Oscars episodes.Be sure to check out our Monument Valley Film on our YouTube Channel.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen at work in the horror, car chase thriller Delivery Run, co-written with & directed by Joey Palmroos. The film has been released digitally and also in select cinemas in the US. In Finland, it will be released in cinemas on November 5th. You can read a review about it here on the Fangoria website.Follow us on our Instagram page. For obvious reasons, we are no longer on Twitter. You won't find us there. "HEAD and HANDS need a mediator. THE MEDIATOR BETWEEN HEAD AND HANDS MUST BE THE HEART!"Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Holmes Movies Podcast team. Here's to a more prosperous and great 2026.Welcome to the ninth episode of our ongoing series: Fascism On Film. Each episode of this series, the Holmes Brothers look and review a film that has to do with fascism. During the episodes, the brothers look and see how the aspects and portrayal of fascism shown in the film relate to current and/or past events. On this Fascism on Film episode, the Holmes Brothers look at Fritz Lang's colossally influential science fiction epic, Metropolis. Released in 1927, Metropolis is a masterpiece of German Expressionist cinema that has inspired every sci fi movie from Star Wars to Blade Runner to even Tim Burton's Batman films. The film has even inspired music videos like Queen's Radio Ga-Ga and Madonna's Express Yourself, the music video for this song was directed by David Fincher. The film is set in a futuristic world. A sprawling concrete jungle that is reminiscent of Manhattan. The working class work below in the bowels of the city keeping it running while the wealthy upper class live up in decadence. Freder (played by Gustav Fröhlich), the son of a wealthy city master, falls in love with Maria a saintly and beautiful girl. She is kidnapped and she is used to bring the robot designed and built by Rotwang (Rudolf Klein-Rogge). Using Maria's likeness, the Machine causes chaos and Maria and Freder try to help save and bridge the divide between the people. We hope you enjoy this episode and stay tuned for more episodes of this Fascism On Film series.Be sure to check out our Monument Valley Film on our YouTube Channel.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen at work in the horror, car chase thriller Delivery Run, co-written with & directed by Joey Palmroos. This week, your favorite horror gremlins go on a full-blown Rutger Hauer appreciation spiral and collectively realize that Rutger Hauer might not have been acting—he might have just been like that.We dive headfirst into The Hitcher (1986), directed by Robert Harmon, a movie that wastes absolutely zero time politely introducing itself before immediately threatening your entire family. Rutger Hauer plays John Ryder like a supernatural force powered by desert heat, bad vibes, and pure “I woke up and chose violence.” We scream about the opening minutes, the lack of motivation (KING SHIT), the daytime horror, the infamous truck scene, and how this movie somehow convinces you thatthe cops are useless, the road is evil, and hitchhiking is basically consenting to a curse. Then we pivot into Surviving the Game (1994), directed by Ernest R. Dickerson, aka The Most Unhinged Rich White People Activity Ever Filmed. The legend that is Ice-T takes on Rutger Hauer, Gary Busey (at MAXIMUM Gary Busey), John C. McGinley, and F. Murray Abraham after they form the most deranged hunting party imaginable. We lose our minds over:Gary Busey writing his own monologue like a cursed prophet The flaming Gary Busey jump scare (cinema peaked here) Ice-T being hunted and immediately becoming an apex predator and deciding "nah, actually, I'm hunting YOU" A trophy room that traumatized us as children and still kinda does To complete the holy trinity, we bring in Hobo with a Shotgun (2011), directed by Jason Eisener, where Rutger Hauer plays a homeless vigilante like he's a mythological figure spawned from grindhouse fumes and righteous rage. We talk about how this movie feels like a fever dream someone had after watching too much VHS-era exploitation and how Rutger Hauer somehow makes “hobo with a shotgun” feel emotionally profound.Throughout the episode we: Argue about VHS vs 4K like it's a religion Praise Rutger Hauer for playing three completely different psychos flawlessly Accidently turn the podcast into Sam Elliott's Mustache: The Extended Cut Realize half these movies would absolutely rule even harder if they were slightly grainier and worse quality Agree that Rutger Hauer is one of the most underrated genre actors of all time This is less a review episode and more a group therapy session for people permanently altered by desert highways, human hunting games, and shotgun blasts. My guest today first joined us back in July 2025, and he's here again to share the remarkable journey he's had since his days at Club Med, this time as a creative force in the film and television industry. In 1996, he wrote and directed Kiss Me, Guido, which went on to premiere at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival. The film even earned a glowing review from none other than Janet Maslin, the esteemed critic at The New York Times. Both Kiss Me, Guido and his third feature, Life's a Beach, draw directly from his Club Med experience. It's an honor to welcome back to the podcast, Tony Vitale! In this episode, we dive into Tony's incredible journey in film and television. He tells us how he landed a job as a Location Scout on A Bronx Tale, Robert De Niro's directorial debut. We then explore Tony's own first feature, Kiss Me, Guido, which he not only wrote and directed but later adapted into a CBS sitcom starring Jason Bateman. From there, we move on to Life's a Beach, where Tony takes us behind the scenes of the production and shares hilarious stories about working with Christopher Walken and Rutger Hauer. If you love movies, television, and the fascinating process of bringing stories to life in Hollywood, this episode is a must-listen! **My First Season podcast has always been ad-free and free to listen to and is available to download on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Podchaser, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora, and Listen Notes. Unclear and Present Danger

On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John watched Hostile Waters, a 1997 made-for-TV movie directed by David Drury and starring Rutger Hauer, Martin Sheen and Max von Sydow. Hostile Waters — based on a real-life incident, the loss of the Soviet Navy's K-219 — was a joint production of HBO and the BBC, released first in the United Kingdom and then the United States. It received good reviews from critics on both sides of the Atlantic. Hostile Waters takes place on October 1986, off the east coast of the United States. A Soviet ballistic missile submarine, the K‑219, collides with the American hunter-killer submarine USS Aurora. The impact ruptures a missile tube aboard the Soviet boat, triggering seawater to seep in—causing a violent chemical reaction, toxic gas buildup, and a fire that threatens the entire submarine and its nuclear warheads. You can find Hostile Waters to stream for free on YouTube, or you could rent it on Amazon Prime or Apple TV.In their next episode, Jamelle and John will watch the 1997 legal thriller Red Corner, directed by Jon Avnet and starring Richard Gere. Here is a brief plot synopsis:An American attorney on business in China, ends up wrongfully on trial for murder and his only key to innocence is a female defense lawyer from the country. And don't forget our Patreon! In our latest episode, we watched the 1983 film Danton, a dramatization of one of the most turbulent moments in the French Revolution. You can sign up for our Patreon at patreon.com/unclearpod.

“This is a Spike TV movie, right?” - Eric On this week's episode, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza gets down and dirty for the all-or-nothing days as we chat about Robert Rodriguez's still totally wild comic translation, Sin City! Thankfully, folks, this movie still looks totally rad! How eerie is Elijah Wood as Kevin? Even with as fun a ride as this is, did we really need to adapt every bit of the Miller sleaze vibes? Will Rodriguez ever get his edge back? How great is Mickey Rourke in this movie? Was having three different musicians do three different scores a good idea? Should the Hartigan story have been cut in two or should the film have been left as the triptych with the Hartnett character as the bookend? PLUS: Kurt Russell and the arctic crew from The Thing all check to see who's The Thing by doing the asparagus pee test! Sin City stars Bruce Willis, Clive Owen, Mickey Rourke, Josh Hartnett, Rosario Dawson, Benicio Del Toro, Michael Clarke Duncan, Carla Gugino, Rutger Hauer, Jaime King, Tommy Flanagan, Nick Offerman, Marley Shelton, Nick Stahl, Elijah Wood, Devon Aoki, Alexis Bledel, Powers Boothe, and the late, great Michael Madsen as Bob; directed by Robert Rodriguez. [EDITOR'S NOTE: We recorded this episode on June 18, several weeks before we lost Michael Madsen. The guy was a total legend, a singular performer who gave us so many memorable film appearances that we've loved and quoted a ton over the years.
