Our heroes are deciding the fate of Lexi the bard! Butthole (Ryan LaPlante, @theryanlaplante) spoke with Alyn and determined there is a magical mind-wipe but it can be undone, Juniper (Laura Hamstra, @lauraehamstra) got Mo Dirt to make a more permanent but riskier “mind smear” potion, and Quinny (Tyler Hewitt, @Tyler_Hewitt) made sure Bucky wouldn't talk! This week, Matt and Bob are joined by returning guest Spenser Davis to break down Zach Cregger's Weapons—one of the year's most talked-about horror releases. The trio dig into: How Weapons blends horror, comedy, and social commentary. The Magnolia-style chapter structure—and whether it works or stalls. Memorable moments: from hot dog trays to the film's most brutal death. The allegories beneath the scares—addiction, failed institutions, and the American suburban nightmare. Aunt Gladys as one of horror's most unsettling new villains. Along the way, they compare Weapons to Barbarian, debate the value of metaphors and Easter eggs, and even wander into Resident Evil and Oscar predictions. It's a deep dive into why Cregger has cemented himself as one of the most exciting genre voices working today.
From writer/director Zach Cregger comes WEAPONS, an ensemble horror mystery thriller about a classroom of kids that disappear and the impact rippling through the community. It's very entertaining and genre-bending, prioritizing its dread and scares and as much as its humor and laughs. How does this stick up to 'Barbarian,' Cregger's previous movie? How much thematic depth does it offer? Is it one of the best movies of the year? Listen to find out!GUEST: Brett Nemeroff
THE YEAR'S BIGGEST “WTF” MOVIE IS HERE! GET READY FOR WEAPONS!*Links in bio - please check out our video episodes on Spotify and YouTubeIn a year that has been a veritable gift for horror fans, the director of “Barbarian” unleashes his eagerly anticipated follow-up, “Weapons” starring Josh Brolin (top billing! We explain…), Julia Garner, (Jose's future husband) Alden Ehrenreich, and Benedict Wong. For a film shrouded in secrecy and teased by a provocative and intriguing teaser trailer, Weapons is poised to draw the audience into its web of mystery. WS+ hosts, WillDaBeast and Cupcake, were NOT ready for the cinematic assault of the double-back, time-around narrative, the true reveal of the genre, the central mystery, and the craziest WTF ending (Director Zach Cregger must have watched “28 Years Later” and then said….hold my f&*king beer). Not to sound like Alfred Hitchcock, but please don't spoil the film for your friends or yourself and try to watch this one blind. This is a must listen to episode! What podcast has not put out an episode on 'Weapons' yet? A Year In Horror, that's who. Now, to be different, I thought that considering the film has been out for 10 days now we could go over some of the think pieces put about about the film and take a look at some of the stats. Also, it would probably not be best to listen to this episode unless you have seen 'Weapons'. This episode is raw with no edits and is just a few hours old.

The troupe approached the gate leading into Bree and unintentionally convinced the guards they were inept enough to not be a threat. Making their way through town, a server from The Prancing Pony invited them to perform at the bar in return for free accommodations, but first Adam and Guy needed proper pants. Adam found himself miraculously clad in a kilt, so they made their way to a tailor's shop to clothe Guy. When they failed to flatter the proprietor into giving them free clothes, they instead traded their one slice of pizza and empty Tylenol bottle. Kicking off this episode, the crew of DblDubz, Filtrophobe, and Tuff announce that they will be hosting a tournament with a grand prize of a Hero Realms Digital Legends account! (Available to non-Legend account holders only! Check the link below for details and to sign-up.) After this the crew breaks down a Dungeons character showdown between a Necromancer and a Druid. The Meta Mashup takes center stage for the episode as Filtrophobe takes us through all the latest Hero Helper data with much more significant sample sizes than available in our previous episode. Things are certainly taking shape around the latest update. This segues into Tuff's latest experiment, an Elf Barbarian which we discuss in the Build Lab. From here we open up the Mailbag to continue our segment on beating the nut draw for each class. Tucked away in the Round-up is a star related rant that you won't want to miss. The troupe continued to fight the goblins. Adam failed to tame the dog-man, Guy noticed the goblins were sensitive to sunlight and set their tarp on fire to destroy their shade, and Tyler, who had run away, realized the others hadn't followed him, so he came back to help finish things off. They then performed the unsavoury task of searching the bodies and found a crude drawing depicting hobbits and a ring, suggesting the hobbits were the targets of more than just the Black Riders. They finally made it to the gates of Bree, relieved to find it looking well-guarded and safe, but will they find the hobbits, the stranger, and Del inside? SPOILER ALERT!!! AS WITH ALL SPECIAL EDITIONS WE HAVE A LOT TO SAY AND SAY IT ALLHorror movies have ramped up their marketing efforts in recent years. Weapons is the latest example. The movie created a website, released two hour security cam footage, along with traditional tactics like an awesome poster and excellent trailer. The end result? It exceeded box office expectations.Where does Zach Cregger stand among current horror directors? There is a very strong argument that he is the best at mixing horror and humor. And this includes the Winters and Osgood Perkins. Along with being satisfying, the ending of Weapons is one of the funniest of the year. The major twist comes well before the final moments. How much people enjoy the twist will also determine how much they like the film. More so than any other movie in recent memory. It will be the point of return for everyone who watches it. For some, Weapons will not be able to do any wrong; for others it will be a complete turnoff.Non-linear storytelling is very tricky to pull off. Not only can it disorient the audience, but it can open things up to plot holes. We talk about one possible issue with Weapons and another nitpick. We also debate how effectively Weapons told its story.Whatever a person's final opinion on Weapons, there is no denying the amazing performances. There has been a shift the past few years, but horror tends to get ignored around awards season. It may not end up getting nominated for anything, but it would be surprising if some names from Cregger's release are not thrown around. One character will definitely be an inspiration for Halloween. What does the success of another original movie IP mean for horror movies in the future? Obviously, franchises and Stephen King adaptations are not going to end; they are the lifeblood of the genre. But will studios be willing to take more risks on new properties? Synopsis When seventeen children from the same classroom run out of their homes in the middle of the night and vanish without a trace, a city is in ruin trying to pick up the pieces and figure out how this happened, where the children have gone to, who could have orchestrated such a thing, and why this occurred. Review This film is mind blowing. I absolutely loved Cregger's Barbarian, he did something unique and subverted all expectations in his 2022 horror hit so this film was one of my most anticipated of this year, and it did not let me down. I was deeply moved by the end of it, and if I wasn't in a full theater, I would have let the tears flow. I loved this film. It made me really sad. The way this story is told through its individual characters' experiences instead of chronologically works in its favor, and as we get more into the stories of our main characters, the horrors of this story unfold in shocking, brutal, and unexpected ways. I am shook to my core more than I thought I would be. I was almost catatonic leaving the theater, relying on my muscle memory to get me back to my car while I pondered the events of the film. This is a poignant and relevant story about the state of this country, about our lack of community, our lack of care for our children and for each other. It shows us the butterfly effect of thoughtless actions and unwillingness to protect one another and how that leads to the destruction of family, love, and the collective. Our community will fail if we continue to turn a blind eye, if we continue to fail each other, and fail our children. The call is coming from inside the house. As if those themes aren't horrifying enough, there is one particular jumpscare that got me and my entire theater. There's great gore, and also some great comic relief in an otherwise melancholy film. The acting is great, especially from Cary Christopher (who played the little kid Alex). I loved this movie. No notes. And if you are struggling with what this movie is truly about, there is quite literally a house-sized AK-47 thirty minutes into the movie to remind you. Score 10/10
On this week's very special bonus episode of The New Flesh, writer/director Zach Cregger returns to the show the Monday morning after his movie WEAPONS opened huge, solidifying a New Flesh tradition that started with BARBARIAN. SPOILERS AHEAD! We get into what the movie means to him, and if it matters that others are taking it in a different way, how to craft a perfect jump scare, and he once and for all refutes the idea that it's about school shootings. He also does an impromptu pitch for a TEXAS CHAINSAW reboot, and tells us of the day he met Josh Brolin and almost blew it. Lots of details! I hope you enjoy it!

Joe and David welcome special guest Josh Deleon (who also provided music for the episode) for a hop-fueled dive into cinematic madness. First up is Weapons, the latest from Barbarian mastermind Zach Cregger—a tense, mind-bending trip through violence, paranoia, and narrative whiplash. For the companion film, the trio rewinds to Cregger's co-directed absurd, cult-comedy The Civil War on Drugs. On tap: Tupps Brewing's Evil Dankster, a dank, resin-packed hop monster with attitude, and Dogfish Head's Grateful Dead Juicy Pale Ale, a fruity, easy-drinking brew with jam-band vibes. Expect sharp takes, big laughs, and more than a few detours into unexpected territory—just another episode of Beer and a Movie.
It's just Kevin and Andrew this week, but that doesn't leave us lacking for content. this week, the guys watched Weapons, War of the Worlds, Trainwreck: Storm Area 51, and The Monkey. In a rare event, Kevin made it to the theater for a non-family film! But he still took a family member, so that's something. But I digress... He and his son ventured to the theater for the new film, Weapons. The latest horror flick from the director that brought you Barbarian is a really solid film and a must-see in the theater if horror is your jam. The story is interesting and creative, and the final act is absolutely nuts, being both horrific and laugh-inducing at the same time. Definitely see this one as soon as you can! Next up, the guys take you on a trip to sad town. Both of them watched War of the Worlds on Prime, and the consensus is... this movie absolutely sucks! How a movie was made for $65M and stars Ice Cube and Eva Longoria and is completely abysmal is almost baffling. There is really no telling where that money went, other than to Amazon branding. Someone is very rich after making this film, but the term we'd use for this sort of money-making scheme is embezzlement. Ok, that's an unsubstantiated guess, but we invite you to watch this film and figure out anywhere else that money could have gone. But actually, don't watch this film. This is one of those "we watched it so you don't have to" moments on APNC. In a much better turn, the guys watched Trainwreck: Storm Area 51. This one is the rare multi-part Trainwreck series and is well worth the watch. If you don't remember, several years back, a young man jokingly posted a Facebook event to storm Area 51. This somehow snowballed into a massive worldwide event and ended in... well, watch the episode to find out! It's a great cautionary tale of how something that should be inconsequential can take on a life of it's own become, possibly, even dangerous. Kevin closes out the show with a review of the movie, The Monkey, now streaming on Hulu. This is classic cheesy horror at its finest. The story isn't overly deep or complicated. The characters are fun but also not complicated. The kills have a very "Final Destination" feel to them, and the movie really is just a lot of fun. Theo James does a great job in dual roles, somehow being nerdy but also a total d-bag. If you like your horror fun and bloody, this is a great one! As always, thank you for watching. This week, we're unpacking Weapons, the latest from Barbarian director Zack Cregger, and things get weird fast. Seventeen kids vanish from one classroom (yes, one), and what follows is a chaotic spiral of mystery, dread, and Josh Brolin brooding like only Josh Brolin can. With a killer cast including Julia Garner and Benedict Wong, there's a lot to like, but is it theater-worthy or best enjoyed in sweatpants with snacks that don't cost $14?Spoiler: we liked it, but we've got thoughts… and popcorn crumbs.

Send us a textWhen 17 children from the same third-grade classroom vanish into the night, a small suburban town becomes the epicenter of a nightmare that defies explanation. "Weapons," Zach Crager's sophomore directorial effort following his breakout hit "Barbarian," delivers a masterclass in atmospheric horror that will leave you checking the locks on your doors. The film's brilliance lies in its unconventional structure, following multiple characters whose lives have been upended by the mass disappearance. We begin with Julia Garner's haunting portrayal of the children's teacher, quickly becoming the town's primary suspect as suspicion and paranoia mount. Just as we settle into her perspective, the narrative shifts to Josh Brolin's grief-stricken contractor, whose son was among the missing. Brolin delivers one of his most compelling performances in years, particularly during nightmarish sequences that blend reality and the supernatural with disturbing fluidity. What sets "Weapons" apart from standard horror fare is how it balances genuine terror with moments of unexpected humor. Crager demonstrates remarkable control over tone, crafting scenes that can transform from laugh-out-loud funny to skin-crawling terror within seconds. The cinematography enhances this unsettling quality, with the camera constantly in motion, creating a voyeuristic feeling that makes viewers complicit in the unfolding horror. The film lovingly channels influences from horror masters – Spielberg's suburban wonderment turned sinister, Carpenter's patient tension-building, Lynch's dream logic – while establishing Crager's unique voice. The soundtrack, featuring both perfectly chosen needle drops and original compositions, elevates each scene whether building dread or amplifying emotional moments. As the mystery deepens and the film ventures into more overtly supernatural territory, "Weapons" asks us to consider what truly lurks behind the façade of suburban normalcy. While some viewers may debate the effectiveness of its third act, the journey is undeniably gripping from start to finish. Don't miss this theatrical experience that reminds us why watching horror with an audience remains one of cinema's most primal pleasures.Support the show
Writer/Director Zach Cregger follows up his successful debut feature, “Barbarian” with another out of the box Horror film, "Weapons”. We will dance around a lot of subjects before the spoiler wall comes down, but the best way to experience a movie like this is on your own, without too much foreknowledge. That said, we are still going to talk about it. Lisa Leaheey, Howard Casner and Nicole Ayers join in a long conversation about a half dozen characters, before we get to the spoiler wall. In this episode of Exploring Humanity Through Sci-Fi, we dive into the eerie brilliance of two modern horror auteurs: Robert Eggers and Zach Cregger. Though their paths to filmmaking couldn't be more different—Eggers from the brooding world of theater, Cregger from the irreverent heights of sketch comedy—they've each carved out unforgettable spaces in the genre. We trace Eggers' evolution from designing stage productions to crafting atmospheric nightmares like The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman, culminating in his upcoming reimagining of Nosferatu. In this episode of The Moviegoers Society, we're diving into Weapons — the haunting, genre-bending new thriller from Barbarian writer-director Zach Cregger. We break down the film's chilling premise, where an entire class of children mysteriously vanishes at the exact same time, and discuss how Cregger blends tragedy, dark humor, and disturbing imagery into something truly unforgettable. Is Weapons as groundbreaking as Barbarian, or is it something entirely different? We share our thoughts on what makes this film stick with you long after the credits roll.
A wide range of reviews, plus we're delighted to be back with movie news, on this week's Breakfast All Day podcast. We begin with a movie that we know so many of you are excited about: "Weapons," writer-director Zach Cregger's follow-up to "Barbarian" from 2022. This is a spoiler-free review, because one of the best parts of "Weapons" is not knowing anything about "Weapons." Just trust us when we tell you it's nuts, and you should see it. We'll have a LIVE spoiler chat at our YouTube channel at Noon Pacific time on Tuesday, Aug. 12, so come back then and we'll get into it. In theaters. Next up is a movie the whole family can see and enjoy: "Freakier Friday," which comes 22 years after "Freaky Friday," which was itself a remake of the 1976 Disney favorite. Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are back for more body-swap shenanigans. We laughed a lot more than we expected. The pacing is lively and the cast is game. In theaters. Then we catch up with the documentary "Billy Joel: And So It Goes," which we missed when it came out because we were both traveling. This is a two-part, five-hour exploration of this enduring musical artist, and it will make you appreciate Joel's songs on a deeper level. So many hits, and the stories behind them are fascinating. Streaming on HBO Max. Finally, it's our first Movie News LIVE! in a long time. Lots to talk about, including "The Wizard of Oz" at Sphere in Las Vegas, "Hamilton" playing in theaters, Dean Cain trying to be an ICE agent and more. We promise to be more consistent with these now that we're both back in town. Thanks to everyone who joined us! * Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/
