Now that we've got the complete first arc of Titan's first non-LA Blade Runner comic—the wonderful Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus—we wanted to chat with the person responsible for creating this bold new vision: first-time comic writer (!) The Blade Runner universe inspires art of all sorts: visual media, poetry, cosplay, you name it. But the form of media most touched by Blade Runner's influence might just be music. Vangelis' legendary score (complemented beautifully by Wallfisch and Zimmer decades later) conjures an atmosphere that many musicians have sought to reconnect with over the years. But this often translates to aesthetic choices. Synth-heavy, reverb-laden, soaked with the atmosphere of dark streets and wet neon. When we heard Dissona, a progressive metal band out of Chicago, was working on a Blade Runner-inspired EP called Dreadfully Distinct, we knew we HAD to speak with them. More than just attempting to capture the "sound" of Blade Runner—although there's some of that here too—Dissona took a more philosophical approach to the material. The result is three tracks that focus on characters from the films, charting their internal emotional journeys while taking the listener on fantastical journeys through the world of Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049. We highly recommend you listen to the tracks "Prodigal Son" and "Skinjob" before listening to the episode—and make sure you watch their videos as well. The world of Blade Runner has had a consistent shroud of mystery over it since its release in 1982. From the rain-soaked streets to the neon signs illuminating the city, there is no corner that's not riddled with questions and shadow. Infiltrating this environment is the presence of a massive amount police. When Fria Ligan (Free League Publishing) released the Alien RPG back in 2019, it was a watershed moment in Alien fandom. Buzzing with drama and detail, this tabletop role playing game gave Alien fans a universe of new content to explore together. In observance of forty years of Blade Runner—and in response to the many, many requests we've gotten over the years to discuss this—the Shoulder of Orion team is finally tackling The Big Question: is Deckard a Replicant? In this kickoff show, Jaime and Patrick unpack some of the reasons this "debate" has gotten so complicated over the years. As we've gotten more editions of the movie, we've gotten more evidence (from Ridley Scott) that Deckard pretty clearly should be considered a Replicant—but we also have Harrison Ford and Hampton Fancher arguing against that idea, and an initial theatrical cut of the film (not to mention source novel) that runs with the assumption that he's human. Where does that leave us? And, perhaps more importantly: does it matter? Does the film hold up to multiple interpretations of the truth?  We don't come up with many answers to these questions, but we do our best to at least get the conversation started. More to come!
