Is Tom Hanks too old to storm Omaha Beach?Host Paul Bavill welcomes Rob Hutton and Duncan Weldon, hosts of the War Movie Theatre podcast, to kick off a series of previews for the Imperial War Museum's (IWM) Podcast Live Festival. This week, they are raising the curtain on movies in a historical setting with a fierce debate on the one historical inaccuracy that Hollywood keeps getting away with.Rob and Duncan unleash their rage on the persistent and problematic trend in war cinema: the casting of much older actors as young combat soldiers in World War II movies. The Saving Private Ryan Problem: Discover exactly why Tom Hanks (mid-to-late 40s) as a Ranger Captain, and Matt Damon (27) as Private Ryan, were both fundamentally too old for their D-Day roles—in some cases by 20 years. The hosts argue that casting older actors fundamentally changes how we perceive the Second World War, overshadowing the reality that the fighting was overwhelmingly done by fresh-faced 19-year-olds.But is historical accuracy the real goal? The discussion turns to the industry's love for "whizzy ideas" and the notorious trope of a writer or director "struggling to get the green light"—and whether this pursuit of a marketable story is the real reason historical truth gets sacrificed for Hollywood blockbusters.Find out which TV series, like Band of Brothers, got the ages right, and whether Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk managed to break the mold.Plus, a fascinating discussion on how the youthful, risk-taking mindset applies not just to infantry and Luftwaffe pilots, but even to Formula 1 drivers.Don't miss this heated discussion!Listen to War Movie Theatre: Find Rob and Duncan's podcast everywhere you get your podcasts and follow on all social media channels @warmovietheatreSee them Live: This episode previews the IWM Podcast Live Festival on the 1st of November. An unscheduled but deeply canon (cannon!) episode diving into 2003's Master & Commander: FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD, directed by Pyiter Weir and starring Rusty Crowe and Dr Paul Bettany. Based on the book of the same name. The chaps chat soggy middles, the unsettling stirring notions of naval flicks and the oddity that is this non-story led blockbuster. Join Dan and Tom as they decode the 1965 spy movie, OPERATION CROSSBOW. Find out if this spy movie, based on a real World War II operation, is worth watching. This movie, which stars George Peppard, Sophia Loren, Trevor Howard, and more tells us the story of the real-life Operation Crossbow operation from World War II. This operation was created to try to stall or eliminate Germany's efforts to create the V-1 and V-2 missiles. So, this movie is part a war movie and part a spy movie. Does that work? Some of the things we cover in our look at OPERATION CROSSBOW include: · The cast – does it work? · A couple of nice cameo appearances · What is the marketing gimmick that was used to promote this movie? · What title did it get in the U.S.A and why? · Is the cinematography picture perfect? · And is the soundtrack music to your ears? · Does Richard Johnson's portral of Winston Churchill work? · Also, what are some of the corellations between what we see in OPERATION CROSSBOW and what is happening in the world today? · Did you know about the test pilots for the pilotless rockets? · How was the balance of “spy movie” vs. “war movie”? · Do Dan and Tom think this spy movie is worth watching? · And of course, there are more. So take a listen to hear what works and what doesn't work in this movie. Tell us what you think about our decoding of OPERATION CROSSBOW? Had you seen this movie before listening to this episode? If not, will you now? Let us know your thoughts, ideas for future episodes, and what you think of this episode. Just drop us a note at info@spymovienavigator.com. For nearly as long as we've been waging war, we've sought ways to chronicle it. “Warfare,” a new movie co-directed by the filmmaker Alex Garland and the former Navy SEAL Ray Mendoza, takes an unorthodox approach, recreating a disastrous real-life mission in Iraq according to Mendoza's own memories and those of the soldiers who fought alongside him. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss how “Warfare” 's visceral account brings us closer to a certain kind of truth, while also creating a space into which viewers can project their own ideologies. The hosts consider how artists have historically portrayed conflict and its aftermath—referencing Virginia Woolf's depiction of a shell-shocked soldier in “Mrs. Dalloway” and Vietnam-era classics such as “Apocalypse Now” and “Full Metal Jacket”—and how “Warfare,” with its emphasis on firsthand experience, marks a departure from much of what came before. “That personal tinge to me seems to be characteristic of the age,” Cunningham says. “Part of the emotional appeal is, This happened, and I'm telling you. It's not diaristic—but it is testimonial.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Warfare” (2025)“Apocalypse Now” (1979)“Full Metal Jacket” (1987)“Beau Travail” (1999)“Saving Private Ryan” (1998)“The Hurt Locker” (2008)“Zero Dark Thirty” (2012)“Barry” (2018–23)“Mrs. Dalloway,” by Virginia Woolf“In Flanders Fields,” by John McCraeNew episodes drop every Thursday. Did audiences jump the gun on Alex Garland's Warfare? Before it's release, the brutally realist portrait of America's war in Iraq was deemed just another army recruitment movie, but Hugo Emmerzael and Laura Gommans definitely don't see it that way. Also: Gia Coppola's The Last Showgirl gives Pamela Anderson a tender, neon-lit comeback, but did it warrant the awards hype it got? Subscriber-only episodeSend us a textTrent and Peaches are back on the Ones Ready podcast, and this members-only episode is a no-holds-barred roast of Hollywood's war movie obsession, questionable haircuts, and the veteran life nobody talks about. From dunking on Fury's overhyped tank drama to unpacking why Brad Pitt's smolder doesn't make him a thespian god, these two bring the heat with zero filter. They also dive into the real grit—veterans navigating a world that thinks they're either broken or Rambo, and why everything's suddenly a “mental health crisis.” Expect sarcasm, contrarian hot takes, and a side of Nickelback love (because why not?). This ain't your average podcast—it's a verbal frag grenade for the initiated. Key Takeaways: Fury's tank bromance is overrated, and Brad Pitt's haircut doesn't deserve its own fan club. Hollywood's veteran portrayals are lazy—either you're a ticking time bomb or a caped crusader, no in-between. The world's not as soft as you think, but good luck convincing civilians to ditch their bubble wrap mindset. Nickelback's meme status is peak internet stupidity—they're still selling out shows while haters cry into their IPAs. Veterans don't need fixing; they need people to stop assuming they're one bad day from digging a foxhole in their front yard.Call-to-Actions:Yo, if you're still here, smash that like button like it's a Hollywood cliche. Joe & Adam dive into Oliver Stone's 1986 Vietnam War flick Platoon, and ponder is this canon Vietnam War flick or has the current state of Charlie Sheen made it a tad laughable. Also, is it enough to just watch Vietnam War films to know about Vietnam? (No). Also, why's Joe so touchy? Thanks for listening, we love you. Email us as moviesyouforgotyouforgot@gmail.com with all your thoughts and notions and criticisms, Adam can handle it. Maybe try and suggest a film for the communal list; dare you? Top 5 War Movies of All Time are discussed.
David Ayers (Suicide Squad, The Beekeeper) directs this brutal war drama which takes place during the last days of World War II along the German front. We follow a crew riding within tank titled the titular "Fury" which is lead by Brad Pitt's grizzled veteran nick-named "Wardaddy." Pitt leads a stellar cast including Michael Pena, Shia LeBouf, Jon Bernthal and Logan Lerman, the latter of which plays Norman who becomes the audience avatar as he has just joined this crew and has never experienced combat before. What results is a grisly adventure featuring several intense combat sequences ALL depicted from the vantage point of this Sherman tank. In the grand tradition of such intimate war epics as Dunkirk and Black Hawk Down, Oscar-winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) directed this ground-level journey of two young British army privates (Dean-Charles Chapman, George MacKay) who are sent on an urgent mission during World War I to deliver a message that will hopefully stop 1,600 men from walking straight into a deadly trap set by the enemy. And everything which transpires on-screen is conducted within ONE continuous shot. :o One of the more acclaimed and successful war epics of recent years, this film nonetheless was dismissed by several as relying more on its central conceit than telling a compelling story....it was also nominated for ten Oscars including Best Picture, and ended up winning three. Let's embark on this harrowing mission with Lance Corporals Blake and Schofield to see how this holds up five years after it was released.....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
