Sumner welcomes his old friend Mark Askwith to this week's Hard Agree. Mark's done itall and interviewed everyone in the pop culture sphere over the last thirty years. After starting out in the late 80s publishing scene (like Sumner himself - but 3,000 miles further west, in Toronto), Mark managed the hugely-influential Silver Snail comic book store in Ontario, before co-writing the comic book sequel to The Prisoner TV show - Shattered Visage - with Dean Motter in 1988. The next year, Mark became a full time TV producer and writer, co-creating and launching the long running Canadian pop culture show Prisoners of Gravity, before spending 20 years as one of the founding producers of Space, Canada's equivalent to the Sci-Fi Channel. Over those two decades, Mark got to meet, befriend and hang out with some of global popular culture's most influential creators – and he's here to tell Sumner all about it (in between lengthy bouts of celebrating their mutual pop culture obsessions). Jo Lalonde tells Aaron she was an artist since she figured out how not to eat the crayons. First apprenticing as a tattoo artist before learning the chalk art trade under legendary Canadian chalk artist Chalk Master Dave, best known for producing the iconic superhero mural on the outside of Silver Snail's former Queen Street location. Jo tells tales of her own superheroism while dealing with the few pedestrians who don't pay attention and walk over her hands and art. Not to mention dealing with other various street buskers while she plied her trade at Toronto's Yonge-Dundas Square before eventually moving a few blocks up for a safer, more secure place to work. Plus, she tells us her favourite superhero for putting chalk to sidewalk. You'll also learn what it takes to draw a great chalk mural on the sidewalk and why those 3D chalk optical illusions are never done spontaneously and are sometimes more trouble than their hits on social media. She tells us why superheroes get her the most attention and how she got the opportunity to draw an Overwatch mural for Activision. This episode is the fate of the artist writ large with an unvarnished look at all the blood sweat and chalk dust it takes to nurture and live off such talent. Hosts Justin and Jacob talk with writers Andrea Fort, Michael Christopher Heron and artist Sam Beck about the relaunch of their comic series Songs For The Dead, all about a misunderstood necromancer. We talk the book, switching to a publisher, and their favourite RPG's. (We picked up a phantom radio frequency so apologies for the mysterious classical piano and other unwanted sounds.) Originally broadcast on CJRU1280 AM in Toronto. Produced by Jacob Dubé.
As one of the founders of the Space Channel and a producer on the homegrown genre fiction culture show Innerspace, Mark Askwith has more than made his mark in the long history of comic book fandom in Canada. (Although, he” far too humble to agree on that fact.) He has personal ties to the likes of Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore and Frank Miller. He is also a staple in the history of Canadian comic book television with the seminal “Prisoners of Gravity,” and was a pioneering manager of The Silver Snail comic store in the 1980s. Aaron delves into Mark’s personal and professional history, and learns Mark’s simple but effective philosophy of creating, sharing and promoting content based on nothing but his genuine passion for genre fiction
