The next year, Mark became a full time TV producer and writer, co-creating and launching the long running Canadian pop culture show Prisoners of Gravity, before spending 20 years as one of the founding producers of Space, Canada's equivalent to the Sci-Fi Channel. Over those two decades, Mark got to meet, befriend and hang out with some of global popular culture's most influential creators – and he's here to tell Sumner all about it (in between lengthy bouts of celebrating their mutual pop culture obsessions). Abstract: Central to advancing our understanding of neural circuits is the development of minimally invasive, multi-modal interfaces capable of simultaneously recording and modulating neural activity. Recent devices have focused on matching the mechanical compliance of tissue to reduce inflammatory responses. However, reductions in the size of multi-modal interfaces are needed to further improve biocompatibility and long-term recording capabilities. Here we demonstrate a multi-modal coaxial microprobe design with a minimally invasive footprint (8-12 m diameter over millimeter lengths) that enables efficient electrical and optical interrogation of neural networks. In the brain, the probes allowed robust electrical measurement and optogenetic stimulation. Scalable fabrication strategies can be used with various electrical and optical materials, making the probes highly customizable to experimental requirements, including length, diameter, and mechanical properties. Given their negligible inflammatory response, these probes promise to enable a new generation of readily tunable multi-modal devices for minimally invasive interfacing with neural circuits. This is episode 21. And on today's show, we've got a bunch of really interesting topics. First we're in our new segment, we're going to cover, um, a couple of different things about the coronavirus downturn. So number one, Delta CEO, Ed Bastian, just released a letter announcing some of their outlook going forward. They just had a, uh, a tough period of laying off a lot of people. And also they just had a bunch of employees except early retirement. So we'll chat about that a little bit in his outlook. Uh, also an interesting article at the BBC on. How jet planes are getting sent to boneyards essentially, I'm also a little bit of lightening strike news because we are a lightning first show. A couple of people injured at the DHL hub. When a lightning strikes a lightning struck a ramp, it sounds like. So a couple of workers injured. We'll talk a little bit about that, which apparently happens more than people realize. Um, as we get into our engineering segment, we were talking a little bit about Honeywell, their UV cabin disinfection system. It's really interesting how all of the world is changing as far as cleanliness and disinfection. And obviously the air air aircraft is no different. We'll also talk about the AVX aircraft, which is a really fascinating looking vehicle with a tilt rotor it's and they're developing, I guess, that for the U S army. And then lastly, as we jumped to some electric tech, the do for. Tilt wing O L so a lot of discussion on that really interesting design. Very complex design. So Alan, let's start with news. We both just read, uh, ed bastion, the Delta CEO's letter. What are some of your thoughts? They got to stop the cash burn. That's there. That's the thought? Yeah. 20 down to 27 million down from a hundred million, a port per day. Which is staggering $3 billion a month. They used, they were burning back in March, April leash. Wow. Money, a lot of cash burn the industry and what Delta jet blue, Southwest American United are all trying to do is. Get the customer satisfaction numbers up so they can increase the ridership so they can fill some airplanes. Cause I think the issue right now is consumer confidence that they aircraft are in the airports themselves for that matter are clean. And that they're taking the precautions that were being told about every 30 seconds that. Uh, th that we're maintaining a social distance that we're wiping down the airplanes or cleaning the airplanes and that, um, everybody on the airplanes or we're in math and it seems to be okay, a very effective way of dealing with it. But the problem is, is that I think people who are traveling at least haven't seen any indication that there's been any sort of COVID transmission. Via airline flights and we've been flying it. We ain't never shut down the airlines they've been flying since this all started. So we have several months of data and thousands of flights, tens of thousands of flights at this point. Uh, it doesn't seem like there's a connection between COBIT transmissions and flying in airplanes. That doesn't seem to be a thing let's let's shift forward here. So speaking of Delta, um, well speaking of just the industry in general, These planes are ending up in bone yards now. So what does that mean? Exactly? Well, there's a couple of places across the United States, mostly in the desert, uh, in the U S where,

The humble coaxial cable

Foundations of Amateur Radio

Play Episode Listen Later May 30, 2020 4:32

Foundations of Amateur Radio If you've ever used a spray can of WD-40, you might have wondered what the name means. It stands for "Water Displacement, 40th formula". In my time as a radio amateur I'd never stopped to think what the RG in RG-58 stood for. Turns out that it too has a meaning, "Radio Guide", though I have found some interesting alternative descriptions where the G stood for Government. This radio guide, really a transmission line, gets a signal from point A to point B. Depending on how you construct that transmission line determines what you'll get at the other end. Coaxial cable or coax is a length of cable made from several components. There's the outer layer or jacket, that protects the cable from electrical shorting, U/V deterioration and water ingress which causes all manner of problems. Inside that is an electrically conductive shield that forms one half of the transmission line, inside that is a dielectric, essentially a separator or insulator between the shield and the inner most, or central conductor, the core. Each of these components can change. On the outside the first thing you might notice is the thickness of the cable. The next thing you might observe is how flexible it is. Below the outer surface other things can also be altered. For example, the core could be a solid copper wire, or it could be strands of copper. It could be aluminium, silver or even steel. It might not even be wire. Some coax like Heliax, used in broadcasting, uses a central conductive tube as the core with air as the insulator between the core and the shield. The dielectric that separates the core from the shield can be made from different materials such as plastics, air and even inert gas such as nitrogen and it comes in varying thickness. Similarly the shield can vary in thickness, material and construction. There are also variations that have multiple levels of shielding, such as for example Quad Shield RG-6, common in satellite television and internet connections that has four layers of shielding. Other aspects might not be nearly as obvious. If you're running coax down a power line it will need physical strength. If you're burying it in the ground it will need to be protected from water ingress. Temperature and heat dissipation are also considerations and if you're using the coax in a nuclear reactor, its ability to deal with radiation. More commonly if you need to run the coax around a corner, how tight it can be bent is another consideration. As the materials and dimensions are changed, the characteristics of the coax changes. Each of these are documented and standardised. The standardisation is both a blessing and a curse. So many options and so much to choose from. For example, if you compare RG-58 to RG-59 they look pretty similar. If you cut into them you'll notice that they're made from similar materials. If you put them side-by-side, you'll notice that RG-59 is thicker, by about 20%, conversely the core for RG-59 is thinner by about 20%, this also means that the dielectric is about 30% different in thickness. As a consequence, connectors for one might fit on the other, but rarely work well. These variations mean that while both types of coax are common and priced similarly, they're not interchangeable. RG-59 used to be common in satellite TV installations and is still used in CCTV, whilst RG-58 is common in radio communications. If you made the decision to actually go out and buy RG-58, you'll come across many variations indicated by extra letters. For example, BC means Bare Copper and TC means Tinned Copper. The final piece of the puzzle in this tangled offering of transmission line is that each manufacturer has their own way of doing and naming things in pursuit of market share. For example, the coax I installed recently is known as LMR-400, CNT-400, WBC-400 and several others. If the performance of your coax actually matters that much, I'd recommend that you spend some time looking at your options before handing over any money. All that behind the name of a piece of coax that runs between your radio and antenna. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

He's also been recording with a variety of groups over the years, and has also been working with Max (and is currently working at Cycling '74). I wanted to get a chance to talk with Christopher, and to find out how he molds all of these different things into a cohesive whole. The answer is complex, but it seems to be connected to a love of all arts - and particularly the place when multiple media come together. This is clearly why he was drawn to Coaxial, Max and a lot of other stuff that he is into. In our chat, we talked about Coaxial - how it got started, how it operates and how he is involved. We also talk about his musical exploits, including Shelter Death, and the broad variety of other projects that are either on-going or on-hiatus. Foundations of Amateur Radio
Ladder Line is not Evil

Foundations of Amateur Radio

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 14, 2017 5:09

Foundations of Amateur Radio The way we connect our antenna to our radio depends on a number of different factors. If you've come through the ranks recently, like I have, it's probable that you've only ever considered using COAXIAL cable. It's a single conductor, surrounded by some type of insulator, which in turn is surrounded by a conductive shield, which is protected by another layer. There are variations where the shield has multiple layers, including layers of foil and braid, so-called quad-shield COAX, and there are variants that have several cores, sometimes two sets of COAX connected side-by-side and so on. In many ways, COAX is an invention of convenience, which has several compromises as a result, loss over distance, termination issues, twisting and deformation and others. It's compact, less susceptible to external interference, it's relatively easy to route to its destination and if you treat it well, it's easy to carry around, but it's not the only way you can feed an antenna. You may have come across the term Ladder Line or Twin-lead, or Twin-feed line. You may also have heard horror stories associated with this "ancient" - well at least in Amateur Radio Terms - technology. Essentially, Ladder Line is two conductors, side-by-side, evenly separated by spacers. It's in use all over the place. If you look up at your power-lines in the street, or the high-voltage lines on top of towers, you'll notice that those are essentially Ladder Line. You've no doubt been told that you need to keep Ladder Line away from everything, in order for it to work, but that's not actually what's needed. What's required is that both conductors are exposed to the same fields. This means that if you're running the Ladder Line through a metal window, you need to ensure that both lines get the same amount of exposure to any nearby metal, you might put a slight twist in the Ladder Line, or you might put it in the middle between two bits of conductor, like a metal window frame. You might also have been told that Ladder Line radiates. It does, but only if the antenna you're feeding isn't balanced, because what actually happens is that the two sides of the antenna don't cancel each other out and the difference is radiated by the Ladder Line. It's worse if the Ladder Line is some resonant length on the frequencies on which you're using the antenna, because it will receive the signal from your antenna and re-radiate that too. It really means that you need to pay attention, but the cost of that attention pales into insignificance, if you think of the benefits. You might recall that your radio is most happy when it's transmitting into a 50 Ohm load. One of the measurements associated with that is an SWR reading of 1:1. This has come to be interpreted as: "You need a 50 Ohm antenna in order for it to radiate." and that's not actually true. All antennas will radiate, and as long as they are at least half a wave length long, their efficiency will be about 90%. The problem isn't the antenna, it's how you feed the antenna. As I said earlier, if you're a relatively new amateur like me, you might have put one and one together and decided that you need to feed it with 50 Ohm COAX and that your antenna needs to be 50 Ohm. If you do that, it will work, but it's not the only way. The reason you need to have a 50 Ohm feed-point to plug your COAX into, is because the COAX has a lot of loss if there is a feed-point mis-match. The higher the mis-match, the higher the loss. For example, using an 80m Dipole on 40m might mean an SWR of 65:1. This has about 80% loss on 100 feet of RG-8 COAX at 7 MHz. All you're doing is heating up COAX. However, if you were to feed it with 600 Ohm Ladder Line, the loss might only be around 3%. Before you start getting out the calculator to prove my maths wrong, this isn't about maths, it's about the difference between Ladder Line and COAX. COAX is wonderful as a tool, but Ladder Line should not be consigned to the annals of history, because in many, many situations it out-shines COAX. The combination of the thickness of the conductor and the separation width, determines its native impedance. There is lots of documentation online, including calculators on spacing and thickness, so you can build your own. I've seen lots of different types of spacers, from watering tubes cut to length holding the wire with cable-ties, to bits of Perspex, to cutting board plastic and others. The simplest and cheapest one I've seen to date was last weekend, made from two earth wires separated by strips of garden edging that comes in rolls. You cut off little strips, drill two holes, feed the wire through and if you're feeling that it needs permanency, glue them in place. Of course you can buy the stuff, but it's getting harder and harder to find at reasonable cost, so experiment a little. Ladder Line, it's not evil, it might surprise you and you will have another feather in your cap when you go out portable to set-up a field station. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

CES 2016 It's that time of year again, the time when hordes of people descend on Las Vegas, Nevada to get a glimpse of all the new technology manufacturers are showing off. Last year over 170,000 people attended. This year, there will be two less. With one HT Guy in Seattle, we weren't able to attend in person. But luckily many of our peers were, so we get to sift through their highlights without having to walk for miles through countless booths and crowds to see everything. Samsung, Philips and others bring Dolby Atmos Soundbars Samsung introduced a soundbar (HW-K950) that will attempt to create a Dolby Atmos experience using a wireless speakers. The system includes a soundbar with three forward facing speakers and two pointed towards the ceiling. The system uses wireless surround speakers that also include Atmos speakers. Finally, there is a wireless subwoofer that gets you a 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos system with only four speaker enclosures.  No pricing or ship date was announced. Philips is also shipping a Dolby Atmos Soundbar. Called the Philips Fidelio soundbar it includes 18 drivers, including two upward-firing speaker modules. Angled tweeters create a wide soundfield. Total output is 400 watts, including 8-inch 220-watt wireless subwoofer. Other features include Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 decoding, dedicated center-channel speaker, two HDMI 1.4a inputs, HDMI audio return channel, and optical and coaxial inputs. no pricing was announced. Samsung's Family Hub Is A Fridge Of The Future Among the reasons why this is deemed a smart home technology of the future is it touts 21.5-inch 1080p monitor outside and few cameras and sensors within so you will know what is inside the refrigerator without the need to open its door or view the interior of the fridge remotely on your smartphone. This is specifically advantageous if you are in a grocery store but do not know what particular foods to buy. You can tag expiration dates on refrigerator items so you use them before you lose them. The giant screen is more than just a peek inside the box, you can use it as a family message board, sync your family calendar to it, shop for groceries or surf the web for recipes. It has speakers, so you can listen to music, and we assume the web interface would allow you to get to Netflix or YouTube as well, but we don't know for sure. LG Annouced Premium LCD-Based Super UHD, 8K TVs LG announced a premium line of UHD TVs (UH9500, UH8500 and UH7700). According to LG, they will all be brighter, better contrast ratios, and include a wider color gamut and HDR. LG will also introduce their first 8K TV, the 98 UH9800. For reference, Sharp's 8K screen goes for close to $130,000! According to LG the UH9500 and UH8500 increase the color gamut to approximately 90% of the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) P3 color space. LG is also claiming high quality sound from the UH9500 due to a Harman Kardon speaker system. Pricing was not available LG's rollable OLED display LG is showing the 30R 18-inch rollable display. They claim the display can be "rolled-up like a newspaper." They have been showing flexible OLED for a couple years, so how this display improves on concepts we saw in 2014 and 2015 isn't obvious, but we expect it to have better resolution and perhaps some built-in electronics for use as an actual television/monitor. The benefit of a rollable display in a consumer environment is pretty obvious. As TVs get to be rediculously large, transporting them, getting them in the door, etc. will become very difficult. If the screens could be rolled up, then just tacked up on a wall once you get them home, it could make 100” screens in every home a reality. Not to mention video walls that can turn into faux-windows ala Total Recall would be pretty sweet.
