POPULARITY
On the Overthinking It Podcast, we tackle twins and doubles in popular culture, and what they say about identity and time. Episode 882: Doctor Smirnoff Ice originally appeared on Overthinking It, the site subjecting the popular culture to a level of scrutiny it probably doesn't deserve. Talahon-Approved.

Cameron Cano's addictions started young. He remembers drinking a case of Smirnoff Ice when he was about 10 years old. At first it was alcohol, but it eventually led to crystal meth and jail all before law school. Cameron's biggest struggle was trying to maintain his sobriety after the drug-related death of his older brother. Angry and not sure where to go or what to do, Cameron decided to go on a soul-cleansing journey on foot, starting in Oregon during the winter and ending back in Texas. It took the harsh conditions of that journey to convince Cameron that he wanted something more for his future. Pushing back against his negative self-talk and self-doubt, Cameron applied to college, then law school. Today, Cameron is a plaintiff's attorney who strictly separates his work and personal lives. His best advice is to maintain your sobriety at all costs and to be conscientious of when you start to feel that your sobriety is at risk. If you find yourself in situations that feel dangerous to your sobriety, you must remove yourself right away.
Brett Parker recently sat down with Shang Wu, Client Director, and Nei Valente, Creative Director, for Design Bridge & Partners to discuss their redesign campaign for Smirnoff Ice, which earned them a 2024 Designalytics Effectiveness Award. Wu and Valente explain recent changes in the beverage and alcohol space that influenced the redesign, the positive consumer feedback they received on the campaign, and lessons from the project that can be applied to all packaging redesign efforts. Late-night laundry — No one likes laundry, but I have some fond memories of the sights and sounds. The twinkle of evening traffic flashing by the windows in yellows and reds. The crisp autumn air waiting to cleanse you of the steamy confines. When I lived at the top of Winter Hill, I frequented a laundromat at the confluence of Broadway and Main. You could look south from there and see Boston towering in the distance. Her high-rises twinkling. Next door to my old laundromat was a liquor store—I would pick up Smirnoff Ice and drink that **** surreptitiously while folding boxers. Alcohol can be pretty great on laundry night because, sentimentality aside, doing laundry sucks. Especially if you have to do it in public. It can be simultaneously tedious and stressful. The way I've heard war described by soldiers. Obviously, laundry is lower stakes. Yet not without its own cast of belligerents. I had a lady dump my sopping underwear into a cart that wasn't even mine. She kicked it down the aisle toward me as I returned from a smoke break. Me and the dude that had dibs (and clothes already in the cart) were like, "Hey!" That lady was a peak-hour lady. Don't do your laundry during peak hours — folks do not play during peak hours. If you want to learn about a laundromat's institutional knowledge, how it operates, and what is expected of its clientele, subject yourself to peak hours. It's going to suck. I learned a bunch from my one stressful peak-hour laundry visit. Most notably, how to change a dollar and avoid the nickel "convenience fee" on the dollar changer. A lady grabbed my wrist as I went in on the changer. "Use the soda machine," she said, pantomiming, feeding my dollar, and then pressing the white coin return button. Off-hour laundry is less stressful. When regular folks are outside being social, doing homework with the kids, or whatever peak-hour people do at night. I washed my dirty drawers with the lady who cordoned off the back corner with universal dibs, the unkempt dude and his stash of Reader's Digest, the repairman making his rounds, and the ever-changing couple propped against the window making out.

Now that 'Fest has come & gone, we're trying to get back to reality this week. We started you off with the Monday Morning Throwback, and on Monday's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a drunk guy plowing into a police station with his vehicle while blaring Guns 'N Roses, and a Waukesha woman who was also drunk and crashed into a few things before chugging a Smirnoff Ice. We went over a list of subtle signs that you're getting old, and had a great story about Adam Wainwright's retirement gift from the Cardinals. On Tuesday's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a couple of bumbling drug cartel hitmen who apparently killed their own boss by accident, a couple of women who robbed an old lady at a Walmart returned to the store the following day whne the police were investigating, an update on the influencer named "Meatball", and an interesting conspiracy theory about this week's EAS test. Are you washing your bananas? Apparently you're supposed to. Jean had to fill in for Shaw this week on Wednesday for "You're killin' me, Jeans", and we talked about the guy in Rhode Island who has a killer Halloween setup at his house. We checked out a list of the best-selling Halloween candies by state from CandyStore.com, and on Thursday's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a grandfather who accidentally shot his grandson at a wedding, and a couple of OnlyFans models who got busted at their day jobs. Plus, some Powerball stats & info on Friday as the latest jackpot soared to $1.4 Billion....and a list of three things to do in & around La Crosse this weekend. And earlier this week, Doc joined us in studio ahead of this weekend's 54th Annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend to give us a breakdown of all the events happening at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway, and he had a complete brain fart & swore live on-air.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The gals are back in the studio for this rip roaring edition of Drunk Women Solving Crime, most of the rip, and a good deal of the roar, being supplied by this week's sublime guest, comedian Chloe Petts! Although this was recorded on the sweatiest day on record (probably) in London Town, that didn't stop Chloe from stawpedoing a Smirnoff Ice right before we pressed record ... no mean feat considering we didn't really have a straw.Chloe was then revved-up enough to share with us a biting tale of childhood forensics and a teacher who surely missed their vocation in law enforcement? We then get involved with a story which stinks in more ways than one, before solving a crime which left a listener feeling more than a little short changed. It's time to settle an island and customize every last inch of it, because today we're joined by writer, actor and twitch streamer, Alice Moran, to talk about her favorite game; Animal Crossing! We chat about the unique circumstances that made this game such a global phenomena in 2020, how Alice made her island ‘canada-core' complete with an LCBO, which villagers freak her out the most, and what it means to play the ‘stalk-market'. Plus we learn some handy tricks to help us craft our own custom island aesthetics and learn about Alice's elaborate Smirnoff Ice trap. Hello glorious listeners, please forgive us for that title! We promise it will make sense later (sort of). Taylor and Emily are back and this time we're joined by a special guest: the oft-mentioned but elusive Jake (Taylor's husband)! Emily saved a special story for him--a frustrating tale of what happens when radioactive material is introduced into a town in Brazil where nobody knows the danger it poses. And Taylor brings us the tale of a man named Michel Lotito, whose knew the dangers of his very strange diet, and kept on eating bicycles anyway. Grab a Smirnoff Ice or something else that reminds you of college, and sit down with us!
The gag, codified as it was on slapdash websites like Bros Icing Bros, was simple: hide a Smirnoff Ice for your bro to find, and he'd have to get down on one knee and chug it. But even at the time, icing's social and commercial impacts were a bit more complicated, and its legacy is a fascinating example of how the early social internet shaped (and scandalized) the beverage alcohol business. Joining Taplines today to discuss icing's indelible, low-ABV legacy is Brandon Wenerd, the publisher of BroBible dot com, which covered the viral phenomenon in real-time as the Aughts came to a close. 2022. The prime of the Inside the Mind of a Child Genius Podcast. The content - both of podcast and of the world in general - had never been better. The happy story ends there. What follows is a no-no and a big one: questionable math, even more questionable science, and an alarming amount of smugness. But if there's one thing this episode makes clear, it's that Herbert Hoover should have done…more. What's your opinion? Also in this episode: “I need to go look at a cat.”, “Now I love to poison myself.”, “My horrified eyes!”, “I may not have talked about it much, but I proved it.”, the Great Depression, the Roaring Twenties, Herbert Hoover, Real Poetry for Real People, America, Switzerland, Wall Street, and Smirnoff Ice.

Well kids, whether you're back to school, or off to school, or DONE with school, there are a lot of things the Wolfe Pack learned from this week's show: while Cali is a good place to visit, you can't play "real" American football in their public schools. Pittsburgh radio "professionals" are three times as friendly as the ones in Chicago--not to mention Dallas, Miami, Cincinnati, Nashville, Los Angeles...it would seem the Windy City has a real stinkbug in its bonnet, nay? And Britney Spears really IS the quintessential Southern Mom. So be sure and take notes--and pick me up a Smirnoff Ice on the way home, junior! We'll see you in D Hall.

Gwan Big Up Ya self!! On the eve (almost) of Gullah Festival on my amazing island of St. Helena, I dive a bit into the history and the history of my Gran-ditty (how I say it haha)!!The Gullah people have been in Americas back yard for many moons. A fabulous mix of Caribbean and creole elements along with African roots, Gullah people arrived in the late 1500s and were instrumental in the development of many southern comfort foods, music, and story telling. Currently only 10% of the people still claim ties. While sipping on Smirnoff Ice "Screwdriver" by way of my Drink Plug, I infuse the vibe with Gullah Gullah island by Dear Silas.
