Snail Inc. founder and chairman Shi Hai joined Steve Darling from Proactive to discuss the company's remarkable evolution from one of China's earliest internet-era gaming businesses into a global game developer and publisher, while outlining its strategy for future growth through proprietary game development and artificial intelligence technologies. Reflecting on the company's origins, Shi explained that Snail was founded in 2000 with a vision of becoming a leader in virtual worlds and interactive entertainment. At a time when China's online gaming industry was still in its infancy, the company helped pioneer the development of some of the country's earliest 3D gaming experiences, establishing a foundation that would support decades of growth and innovation. Over the years, Snail expanded alongside the rapidly changing gaming industry, successfully navigating multiple technology cycles. The company broadened its portfolio from early online titles into web-based games, massively multiplayer online games (MMOs), mobile gaming experiences, and eventually international markets, including a significant presence in the United States. Throughout that journey, Snail also developed expertise in acquiring, supporting, and growing independent game studios, helping creators bring new intellectual property and gaming experiences to market. Shi noted that the company's strategy has evolved significantly in recent years. Rather than relying primarily on third-party publishing opportunities, Snail has increasingly focused on controlling the full lifecycle of game development, from concept creation and production through publishing, live operations, and long-term community engagement. This approach allows the company to capture greater value from successful titles while building long-term franchises that can generate recurring revenue streams. A central pillar of that strategy is the development of strong intellectual property. Shi emphasized that in today's competitive gaming market, creating recognizable brands and immersive game worlds is more important than ever. Successful games increasingly require compelling content, active player communities, ongoing updates, and live-service capabilities that keep players engaged over extended periods. The discussion also explored the challenges facing the broader gaming industry. Shi observed that both independent developers and major publishers are under increasing pressure as player expectations continue to rise. Modern gamers demand larger worlds, richer experiences, higher production quality, and more frequent content updates, all while development costs continue to climb. As a result, studios must find ways to improve efficiency while maintaining creativity and innovation. Looking ahead, Snail sees artificial intelligence as a major opportunity to transform both game development and player experiences. Shi explained that AI technologies have the potential to streamline production processes, accelerate content creation, improve testing and quality assurance, and enhance in-game experiences through more dynamic and intelligent interactions. The company believes that integrating AI into its development pipeline can help reduce costs, improve productivity, and enable teams to focus more heavily on creativity and innovation. At the same time, AI-driven features could create more personalized and engaging gameplay experiences for players, helping differentiate Snail's products in an increasingly crowded marketplace. Shi outlined ambitious growth objectives for the company, emphasizing the value of owning and releasing internally developed products. “By developing and releasing our own products, we want to be able to double or triple our profits once products are released,” he said, highlighting the significant upside potential associated with successful proprietary game launches. As the gaming industry enters a new era shaped by AI, evolving player expectations, and global competition, Snail believes its combination of industry experience, intellectual property development, publishing expertise, and emerging technology capabilities positions the company to capitalize on future opportunities and continue building long-term shareholder value. #proactiveinvestors #snail #nasdaq #snal #SnailInc #Gaming #VideoGames #ARKSurvivalEvolved #GameDevelopment #Entertainment #Esports #TechStocks #GamingIndustry

Send us Fan Mail"Those who sleep don't catch any fish." – Italian Proverb Gerald the Duck is, without a doubt, the most magnificent duck in Snaggleton. He has cloud-white feathers, a polished orange beak, and a very dignified waddle. He is also, unfortunately, rather lazy! Lately, Gerald has decided that waking up early to hunt for delicious Sludge-Snails in the castle moat is far too "inconvenient". Because he loves his beauty sleep, Gerald starts waking up late—only to find that the other ducks have already eaten every single snack in the water! When Nolan the Gnome Knight warns him that "those who sleep don't catch any fish," Gerald simply sniffs and points out that he eats snails, not fish, completely missing the point! To teach him a lesson about effort, Nolan commands Gerald to fly him to Sparky Flarkbottom's workshop. There, Gerald watches the gnome inventor try to build an Auto-Rocking Hammock. Sparky spends the entire day failing. Instead of giving up, Sparky keeps adjusting her gears until she finally achieves success on Test Three. She shows Gerald her backyard—a mountain of junk filled with exploded boilers and half-melted robots. Sparky proudly calls them her "lessons," proving that you have to be awake to make mistakes, and you have to make mistakes to get the prize! In this kids story podcast episode, Gerald finally understands the metaphor. Watch as he braves the freezing dawn, swallows a bit of mud, and learns that breakfast tastes a whole lot better when you have to work for it! It's BKFK Book Month! Our story tonight is called The Garden Center, or, The Left-Handed Snail, and it's a story about a quiet corner of the plant nursery where a slow moving community is coming together. It's also about push brooms and dropped leaves, shadows in the gloaming, and something rarer than a four leaf clover. Subscribe to our Premium channel. The first month is on us.

Bringing an animal back from the brink of extinction is an amazing feat, but when it's an animal that doesn't usually feature among the most talked-about endangered species it's especially exciting for one kiwi scientist. James Joseph is a champion of the humble snail. The Norfolk Island snail to be exact. About six years ago, an island resident came across the Campbell's keeled glass-snail listed as extinct 20 years ago. A team of scientists gave the invertebrate a fighting chance and they're reporting some very unexpected but positive developments. James Joseph spoke to Melissa Chan-Green.

Liz and Ben were once again fortunate to be guests of the Australian Discworld Convention – this time in Sydney! In this live recording from day two of Nullus Anxietas X: A Celebration of Witches, we discuss Rhianna Pratchett and Gabrielle Kent's 2023 book, Tiffany Aching's Guide to Being a Witch. (We previously interviewed Rhianna and Gabrielle about it in Pratchat74, “Hogswitch”.) Tiffany Aching has been a witch for some years now, and has been writing down what she's learned. When she gets the opportunity to publish her work, and hopefully inspire a new generation of witches, she sends the manuscript to her mentors to get their thoughts via notes in the margins. And a couple of uninvited guests give their opinions, too – on everything from proper headwear, to the relationships between witches, and the supernatural threats one is likely to face… Which new bits were your favourites from the book? What did you think Petunia's “pig trick” was when you first read about it in A Hat Full of Sky? Do you have a favourite witch, and why is it Nanny Ogg? (We won't tell Granny.) Are you a Dolly Sisters fan, or a Dimwell diehard? (The reason this is important will become apparent when you listen.) What do you wish we'd do on the podcast before we finish up with all the novels – or perhaps do next, when Pratchat is over? We’d love to know! Use the hashtag #PratchatNAX on social media to join the conversation, or email us at chat@pratchatpodcast.com (we do read them all, though we've been a bit slow to reply of late). Nullus Anxietas, the Australian Discworld Convention, has been running for nearly twenty years. The next convention will be in 2028 in Melbourne! You can find out more at the official convention website, ausdwcon.org. You can also follow Nullus Anxietas on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. You can find the full show notes and errata for this episode on our web site. Huge thanks to everyone who attended the convention; our wonderful live audience, especially Danny, Helen and Jeremy; and especially offer enormous thanks to the “big jobs” – the team of hard-working volunteers and committee members who make Nullus Anxietas happen, especially Joanne, Steve, Danny and Kurt – but there were so many others. We hope to see you all in Melbourne for the next one. Want to help us get to the end of our six(ish) year mission and read every Pratchett book – and more? You can support us with a tip, or a subscription for as little as $2 a month, and that's cuttin' our own throats! See our Support Us page for details.
This week we close out the month with a gang of puppets moving one frame at a time. In 1957, a rare Sumatran rat monkey was smuggled into New Zealand and put on display. When meek Lionel's domineering mother is bit by the rat monkey, he soon finds himself desperately trying to contain a zombie outbreak. The last of Peter Jackson's early splatter comedies, Braindead (aka Dead Alive). Norman Babcock can speak to the dead. As the anniversary of the town's witch trial approaches, Norman beings having nightmarish visions of the past. Soon he has to decide if he will continue the yearly traditions of soothing a very restless spirit or choose a new approach. The second feature from Laika, ParaNorman. Grace Pudel is a young girl in 1970s Australia. When her father dies, she and her twin brother, Gilbert, are sent to different foster families on opposite sides of the country. Despite Gilbert writing letters promising their reunion, Grace is unable to form connections, which leads to her hording all the snail-themed products she finds. The latest feature from minimalist tragicomedy auteur Adam Elliot, Memoir of a Snail. Iria, an extraterrestrial bounty hunter, and her AI sidekick, Bob, arrive on Earth to capture a fugitive. They plan to hold their confrontation in The Zone, a virtual environment, to lessen damage to the natives. Unfortunately, this draws a lot of power and pulls a pair of electric company technicians into the fight. The second feature from tokusatsu mastermind Keita Amemiya- Zeiram. All that and Tyler is still euphoric, Craig gets euphemistic, Dave uses some eucaine, and Kevin debates adding a eucleidae to his woodland army. Join us, won't you? Episode 462- STOP! Motion Time

It might not be obvious in Aotearoa, but there's something like 1400 different species of snails! They're in many groups and with many different jobs to do, in the forests, in liquid habitats, on tree trunks, and in your garden. Native snails consume dead and decaying leaves, fungus, and algae (they don't eat your veggie garden) and leave behind nutrient-rich poo for soil health. The Leaf-veined slug is one of those Molluscs that slithers around in the evening and at night. Their movement can be relatively smart, especially when they cruise on outdoor furniture or on leaves. Here they clean surfaces – literally! I've always called them the Wet & Forget slug, simply because they leave those clean tracks where-ever they went. Paryphanta the kauri snail. A serious native snail with almost 80 mm diameter shell. It occurs from Kaitaia to the southern parts of Northland. It's even distributed to Titirangi and Laingholm, where I used to have it on our lawn, especially at night. I'll never forget having to remove these massive snails before mowing the lawn! They are carnivorous: eating worms, insect larvae, and other snail species. The way they catch the worms is akin to sucking up spaghetti from the layers in the soil! Limax maximus (literally: “the largest slug”) also known as the leopard slug. Introduced into New Zealand and has a habit of getting inside our homes, especially when there's a cat with milk in its bowl. The slurping by this slug can be heard by the neighbours! And here is one of those introduced snails that can cause a lot of damage to your garden: Cantareus Asperses, the Brown Garden Snail. It's originally from Northern Africa and taken to France, a long, long time ago, it was introduced to NZ with European settlers. Troublesome eater of leaves etc in massive numbers; hiding under pots during the day and always more numerous than you think. One of the so-called “control” measures is spreading sharp chicken eggshells around the plants, so that the snails can't walk over those sharp items. This picture shows one of those snails crossing over a brand-new, super sharp knife… One historical story is far more important than sharp knives: this snail species is one of the preferred snails that French people cultivate and use to create Escargot. Snail farming in New Zealand might not be a bad idea – it makes that protein a lot cheaper with the rising prices of our food! LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, we consider a creature we often don't think much about—the snail. And not just snails, but their sex lives. Which, as it turns out, is epic. There is persuasion and subterfuge, spaghetti penises and co-copulation. And this very surprising habit—erm kink—of making tiny arrows (actually!) and stabbing each other with them. Known as a “love dart,” these limestone daggers aren't just a strange trick of nature—they have a deep evolutionary purpose. Special thanks to Menno Schilthuizen and Aaron Chase.EPISODE CREDITS: Hosted by - Molly Webster Reported by - Molly Webster Produced by - Mona Madgavkar, Annie McEwen, Molly Webster Sound design contributed by - Mona Madgavkar, Annie McEwen Fact-checking by - Diane A. In this episode, the crew dives into reports that Palo Alto Networks allegedly avoided directly attributing a threat campaign to China over fears of retaliation—sparking a broader debate about corporate and government threat attribution, geopolitics, and whether attribution still matters in today's cyber landscape. They also explore the escalating AI arms race, including Meta's aggressive (and expensive) talent poaching, the growing rivalry between OpenAI and Anthropic, and what it all means for the future of the industry.Rounding out the episode, the team discusses the unintended consequences of the AI boom—like global hardware shortages stretching beyond GPUs to hard drives—and examines emerging prompt injection attack techniques, highlighting real-world examples and the growing security risks surrounding AI-powered tools.Join us LIVE on Mondays, 4:30pm EST.A weekly Podcast with BHIS and Friends. 2026-01-29 | UPDATES #118 | Russia's advance slows to a nine-month low — signs of an army crisis, and why major 2026 offensives may be running out of road. Today is day 1,435 of Russia's full-scale invasion. That's not a milestone, but an inditement of political failure and industrial-scale human waste. The “unstoppable Russian offensive” narrative is hitting a wall. This fact stunned me last week, that the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War against Nazi Germany lasted 1,418 days. This war has now outlasted that — with nothing like the strategic gains, and with Russia's army moving in distance measured in meters, not kilometers.----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain----------SOURCES: UK Parliament Hansard (Jan 29, 2026) — “Today is 1,435 days…” CSIS report (PDF): Russia's Grinding War in Ukraine (published Jan 27, 2026) Business Insider (Jan 29, 2026) summarizing CSIS pace comparisons Associated Press (via AP News, Jan 28, 2026) on CSIS casualty estimatesThe Guardian (Jan 28, 2026) on casualty totals approaching 2m ISW / Critical Threats (Jan 27, 2026) — Donetsk timeline; “lies and exaggerations”; observed vs claimed gains Russia Matters — War Report Card (Jan 28, 2026) territory gained metrics Euromaidan Press (Jan 28, 2026) — nine-month low pace claim (km²/day) Ukraine President's site (Jan 26, 2026) — drones destroying “more than 80%” of enemy targetsDefense News (Jan 28, 2026) — drone share of destroyed targets CSIS LinkedIn post (last 48h) — “extraordinary price for minimal gains” framing Kyiv Post (Jan 29, 2026) — false “captured” claims and battlefield risk (Kupyansk) ----------SILICON CURTAIN LIVE EVENTS - FUNDRAISER CAMPAIGN Events in 2026 - Advocacy for a Ukrainian victory with Silicon Curtainhttps://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extrasOur events of the first half of the year in Lviv, Kyiv and Odesa were a huge success. Welcome to Episode 252, where we share LISTENER TOP TEN READS of 2025! In past years, there hasn't been much of a spread between the first and second place books on the list. But this year there is a 15-point spread between the first and second books! As usual, the first-place book was a novel, but the second-place book was nonfiction—a first ever for that. Usually, nonfiction doesn't show up until well into the list's mid-teens. Thanks to everyone who shared their top tens– you help grow our TBR lists! Reminder that we have a Top 10 shelf on our Bookshop.org page for purchase and for you to learn more about each of the books. We also talk about our 2026 Reading Intentions. These are often works in progress, which is a good thing, because after recording, we both realized we had forgotten a couple of intentions. It had been a longer-than-usual time span since we last recorded a regular episode, so we had some catching up to do in our “Just Read” segment, which includes: BETH IS DEAD by Katie Bernet PRACTICAL MAGIC by Alice Hoffman A BACKWARD GLANCE by Edith Wharton BODYWORK: The Radical Power of Personal Narrative by Melissa Febos POSTMORTEM and BODY OF EVIDENCE by Patricia Cornwell THE AUTHOR WEEKEND by Laura Zigman (release date 5/5/2026) A TANGLE OF OBSIDIAN by Lydia M. Hawke THEO OF GOLDEN by Allen Levi We had some wonderful Couch Biblio Adventures, but we also managed to get out into the world. Emily visited Slackline Press in Branford, Connecticut, and Davoll's General Store in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, where she saw Catherine Newman in conversation with Emily Franklin. Chris was in Huntsville, Alabama, and visited The Snail on the Wall bookstore, named after Virginia Woolf's short story, “The Mark on the Wall.” She also checked out the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library. Happy listening, take care of yourself, and stay safe out there. Until next time, we wish you lots of Happy Reading!
