Social platforms may connect thousands, but true communities are intimate, purposeful, and safe. As Todd put it, a network is like a busy freeway—you can make friends, but it's not where you belong. Real communities are built in "cozy warrens": discussion forums, private groups, and member spaces that foster trust and meaningful exchange. The technology for online communities is abundant, but Todd warns: tools alone don't build belonging. Trust is foundational. He outlined three layers of safety—trustworthy platforms, credible conveners, and benevolent members—enabling honest sharing and engagement. He shared the example of Truth Initiative, whose online community helps people quit smoking and vaping. There, anonymity and trust turn participation into a true "return on life." Community success is a program, not a project. You can't just launch a platform and expect results. Todd stresses the importance of having a dedicated human facilitator—more concierge than manager—who welcomes, connects, and guides members. While AI can help with moderation, it can't replace human warmth or judgment. We also discussed the importance of strategic clarity: before asking for proof of ROI, organizations must define their community's purpose. What are the desired outcomes—reduced costs, improved retention, innovation? Community design must align with both organizational goals and member needs, even when those priorities differ. Hybrid models work best. Online and offline communities reinforce each other, extending the sense of belonging and engagement. Welcome to episode #253 of The COD Casuals, where we discuss all things Call of Duty, casual and professional!In this episode, we dive into some breaking news regarding the future of Call of Duty. As stated by Activision, Call of Duty will no longer do back to back releases for the same developer/series, meaning we will return to the original formula of developers alternating years in the hopes of a more developed game. This begs the question though if they should have COD on a two-year release cycle. What are the benefits of this move, and what are the challenges they would face? Along with this, we discuss a leaked rumor regarding the state of next year's COD title, and things are not looking good so far. We share our thoughts on what has been rumored, and what is the best path for COD going forward so Activision can hold up to their statement of “we will deliver, and overdeliver, on those expectations going forward.” Finally, we close with our CDL review as we go into the winter break, and share our thoughts on where each team stands currently. In today's Daily Fix:Call of Duty: Black Ops 7's launch likely isn't going the way Activision would have hoped, at least in Europe. Via The Game Business, the European launch of the game saw 63% fewer copies sold compared to competitor Battlefield 6. It's also down more than 50% against last year's Black Ops 6. Game Pass subscriptions have not been taken into account as Microsoft has not provided that data. In other news, Charlie Cox doesn't want any of the credit for his performance as Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, even as he's nominated at this year's The Game Awards. The battle for Warner Bros. Discovery is seeing a new champion enter the ring, with Netflix making some moves to put their own bid in for the studio's properties. According to Reuters, the streaming pioneer engaged with investment bank Moelis & Co. in order to prepare an offer. Ironically, this is the same bank that worked with David Ellison at Skydance to take over Paramount whose first bid to buy Warner Bros. Discovery was rejected. It was the worst weekend at the box office this year, with ticket sales coming in at just $52.4 million. This also makes it the lowest-grossing Halloween weekend in 31 years, excluding theater closures due to COVID in 2020. While new film Regretting You took in a respectable $50 million, Black Phone 2 really has the crown from the weekend having now brought in $104 million globally - another huge win for horror this year. Yorgos Lanthimos' new film Bugonia, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, is sitting at a small $11.1 million globally after breaking into more theaters.Both Scream 7 and Stranger Things Season 5 released trailers recently. It's been a bit of a rough go for Obsidian as of late. Compared to their usual RPG triumphs, Avowed felt quite a bit less than that. However, not all of it was entirely their fault. At one point, Xbox chose to make this the $80 game that would lead the charge in a new era of high prices. After considerable pushback, they chose to drop the price to $70. While a welcome sight, some have debated if even that is a fair price point for what appears to be a AA RPG. Now, marketing has kicked the hornet's nest with the latest companion trailer. So, here we are. Cog and Matty played the prologue section of the game and our thoughts are mixed. There certainly wasn't a "sound the alarm" moment, but it read to the Dukes like a less confident showing. Much of what makes an Obsidian RPG great is here. However, after the preview failed to show how that would be executed, both Dukes were left feeling like there is more that could've been done. Now, the tough decision falls to Xbox. Do you risk another preview and overexpose the game to try and correct things? Do you ride into launch and hope for the best? Time will tell, but we only have to wait until October to learn just how worth it Outer Worlds 2 will be.
