Man: Brand New Day over.

A note to our listeners: We are taking a little break from the podcast due to some current hardships in our family. We should be back by June 2025, and we will keep you updated on our Instagram (@significantlovers). Now on to the show... The year was 2016. A relatively unknown British actor named Tom Holland had just recently been cast (the year prior) as the newest Spider-Man. He made his first appearance in the film Captain America: Civil War, and his solo trilogy as the famous web-slinger had been officially green-lit. The world was abuzz with speculation as to who would play Tom's on-screen love interest, MJ. Enter Zendaya Coleman (or just Zendaya, as she liked to be called), a Disney Channels star with a promising career in Hollywood ahead of her. Especially once she landed her first feature film role in the upcoming Spider-Man movie. From then on Tom and Zendaya were known to the public as co-stars. And then friends. And then someone more?…In this episode, we dive into the fascinating relationship between Tom Holland and Zendaya. From their iconic on-screen chemistry in Spider-Man to their real-life bond, we explore how their friendship eventually blossomed into the romantic relationship that everyone knows and loves today. But don't you worry, their relationship may not have been as perfect as you may think. Ever heard of Jacob Elordi? You certainly will during this episode. Whether you're a die-hard fan or just curious about their connection, this episode has all the details you won't want to miss!1. Zendaya and Tom Talk About Their First Meeting: 0:00 - 0:502. To merely label this as a podcast episode about the 2016 film Captain America: Civil War would be both misrepresentative and deeply reductive of what these three and a half (3.5) hours hold. What once started as a bit to unethically force our dear friend Chance Freytag to rewatch Civil War and watch the newest MCU entry, Captain America: Brave New World, with us evolved into something much grander. From Moby Dick to Stalker (1979, dir. Tarkovsky) to what a movie actually is and the impact it can have on someone's life, this episode is a sprawling piece of introspection and personal reckoning for Chris, Mateo, and Chance. This episode has more in common with an average telehealth appointment than a typical recorded MCU discussion. This release of this film was a pivotal moment in the moviegoing careers of all three of the fellas, and they reflect on everything that has transpired in the industry and their lives in film since. Welcome back to another episode where we are breaking down all four Captain America movies. We brought back Charles AKA The Reel Voice to break down this beloved characters movies.Table of Contents:00:00 (Intro)12:56 (Captain America: The First Avenger)35:46 (Captain America: The Winter Soldier)01:08:45 (Captain America: Civil War)01:45:57 (Captain America: Brave New World)
Captain America: Brave New World marks the beginning of the second half of The Multiverse Saga. This installment weaves long-dangling threads from 2008's Incredible Hulk, events from Captain America: Civil War, and a world-shifting revelation from Eternals into an action-forward political thriller. In keeping with early Captain America storylines, Brave New World blends its “state of the sociopolitical landscape” level-set into a plot driven by high-stakes mission and a changing of the political guard. If you're coming into Captain America: Brave New World off of a (re)watch of The Falcon and the Winter Solider series, temper those expectations. In director Julius Onah's (Luce) film, Wilson may no longer be conflicted about assuming the mantle of Captain America; but he is wrestling with his role in the US military industrial complex, the pressure to be an unassailable Black hero, and taking repeated hits to his sense of self in an anti-Black system. It's a subtle (often too subtle), but intentional, schism at play throughout the entire movie. But it pays to remember, Sam Wilson's tenure as Captain America has just begun. This is not the moment he shakes off the fetters of respectability. Just like in the comics, Wilson's path forward is a more measured and pragmatic approach to combating inequity and defending against evil; seeming to operate within the realm of current reality rather than aggressively rejecting and dismantling oppressive ideologies and their attendant institutions. As a veteran and counselor (who specialized in helping other veterans suffering from PTSD) he openly advocated for the necessity of harm mitigation while carving out sustainable solutions. He still believes that despite the obstacles and judgment that we (society) can do better. Think John Lewis, not Stokely Carmichael. And that fact alone will be reason enough for some viewers to bounce off Brave New World. Captain America: Brave New World opens in theaters February 14, 2025 ♦♦ Director: Julius Onah Writers: Rob Edwards, Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, Julius Onah, Peter Glanz Starring: Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Xosha Roquemore, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, Harrison Ford Runtime: 118 Minutes Synopsis: Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, finds himself in the middle of an international incident and must discover the motive behind a nefarious global plan. Who Watches the Heroes? When superheroes cause civilian casualties while trying to save the world, who holds them responsible? This episode dives deep into the complex ethics of superhero accountability, using Marvel's Civil War (the comics) and the MCU's Captain America: Civil War (the movie) as starting points to explore broader questions about power, oversight, and responsibility. The discussion examines how superhero accountability parallels real-world debates about police, military, and government oversight. Matthew and Riki analyze different models of accountability, from internal team oversight to international bodies like the UN, questioning whether registration requirements are justified and what happens when good intentions lead to tragic outcomes. Can we trust those with extraordinary powers to regulate themselves? The hosts explore how the evolution of superhero stories mirrors changing public attitudes toward authority figures, shifting from unquestioned trust to demands for greater oversight. The conversation weighs the challenges of balancing individual liberty with public safety when dealing with people who are, in essence, "living weapons."What constitutes appropriate oversight versus excessive control? The episode examines various approaches—from complete autonomy to strict registration requirements—while considering how factors like intent, training, and leadership responsibility should factor into accountability systems.Other Key Topics Discussed:Differences between the comic version of Civil War and the MCU's Captain America: Civil WarThe role of secret identities in accountability debatesParallels between superhero oversight and real-world authority figuresThe impact of Vietnam and the Watergate scandal on superhero narrativesChallenges of regulating innate powers versus granted authorityThe evolution of moral complexity in comic storytellingInternational versus national jurisdiction over superheroesLeadership accountability in hierarchical organizationsBalancing security and individual rightsThe episode concludes by examining how accountability doesn't necessarily mean assuming bad intent, but rather ensuring proper systems exist to evaluate outcomes and prevent unintended harm. Even heroes acting with the best intentions need external perspectives to assess whether their actions truly serve the greater good. This is our February member bonus episode. Captain America is back and this time he wants to beat up Iron Man! In wrapping up our look at the Steve Rogers Captain America trilogy we take a look at the biggest entry, Civil War. After Tony Stark again begins to feel bad about being a bad bloke he backs the General Ross drafted Sokovia Accords which means more regulations for any enhanced beings. This acts as the introduction of both Spider-Man and Black Panther and divides The Avengers into two distinct teams who beat each other up in an airport among other physical activities. Bat Therapy: Psychology of Batman and other Comic Superheroes
Starting right before Captain America: Civil War, Wakanda gets hit with trauma after trauma after trauma. Hear a licensed clinical psychologist talk about the best ways to support someone like these Wakandans in the hours, days, and weeks after a traumatic event.Sources:https://www.ptsd.va.gov/professional/treat/txessentials/tx_survivors_trauma.asphttps://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/helplines/disaster-distress-helpline
Bat Therapy: Psychology of Batman and other Comic Superheroes
We use Captain America: Civil War and Black Panther to explore the impossible juggle of being the leader of your country while also being a superhero. And being the leader of Wakanda? King T'Challa has multiple secret identities to maintain with the outside world. We look at the cracks in Wakanda's façade and wonder how the country would have felt toward its leader if the snap had not happened.

Nick and Angela continue their Christmas tradition and welcome a Hollywood star to Dish HQ. Born and raised in South-West London, Tom Holland's career began on the West End, when he won the part of Billy Elliot in 2008. He went on to star in the critically-acclaimed film, The Impossible with Naomi Watts in 2012. He is best known for his role as Spider-Man and his first foray into the Marvel Universe came in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. He has since reprised the role in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and several Avengers movies. Tom Holland is here to celebrate the launch of Bero, his new alcohol-free beer. Angela prepares a festive feast of slow-cooked pork shoulder with peas & mint with roast potatoes with rosemary salt, sticky pigs in blankets, the best cauliflower cheese, by Martha Collison and orange & honey glazed carrots. The experts at Waitrose pair this with a No.1 Piccini Chianti Classico Riserva. To finish, Angela makes Tom's favourite, orange Jaffa cakes and serves some No.1 brown butter mince pies. This episode is the perfect end to another wonderful year on Dish. Nick and Angela share their plans for the holidays and we find out what happens at a Holland family Christmas. And and Dan talk about that really old movie, Captain America: Civil War? Ever see it? Last week, we took a look at Deadpool & Wolverine as a possible future of the MCU -- is it a good idea to remember what its future used to be? There's a lot of IR but not the kind you think—also, capitalism. Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
After the cinematic lows of The Amazing Spider-Man series it was time for another Spider-Man reboot, this time by folding him into the MCU. After his first apperance as Peter Park in Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland got his own (sort of) movie dealing with the trials and tribulations of being a high school superhero. Going up against Michael Keaton's Vulture and his terrible surrogate dad in Tony Stark/Iron Man the film did a great job at youthifying the franchise and taking the character in a new direction. Which some people like and some people don't.
