SHOWS THIS WEEKEND:Thursday 2/15 Hops & Barley's in Mechanicsburg, PA 6:30-9:30pmFriday 2/16 Republican Club in Hanover, PA 7-10pmSaturday 2/17 Buddy Boy Winery in Duncannon, PA 6-9pmTHURSDAY THOUGHTS….. Music is so important. Could you imagine never slow dancing with a person you love, ever? Or never banging your head and throwing horns at a metal concert, or having a completely silent workout at the gym? It's incredible the amount of places music is found when you pay attention. It reaches across cultures, continents, and connects people through a bond of rhythmic vibrations. Sometimes it just helps you pass a couple minutes at the gas pump. I find it really fascinating that people can have such wildly different tastes in music, except that everyone hates country….. Just kidding. The fact that there are so many different genres of music really goes to show that there isn't just a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to things you connect with. Some people love deep and meaningful lyrics, others may just want to dance or jam out to a funky bass line. Sometimes it's more about the way you “feel” when you hear a song then the actual words being said. As for me, I try to listen and expose myself to every genre I can find. I like some more than others, but I've come to learn they all seem to serve different purposes for me. When I write the outlines for my blog posts or podcasts, I listen to bands like Khruangbin or Skinshape. They have groovy bass, flowing melodies, haunting vocals and tons of reverb. It's perfect for putting me in the zone for writing. The songs seem to make the words in my head flow straight down into my fingers. Rock music makes me bang my bald head back and forth, whipping my imaginary hair to and fro while shouting out lyrics at the top of my lungs. It's high energy and aggressive tendencies are perfect for my days at the gym, or the drive home from some of the gigs I play. It makes me want to break shit and then break it again. Prior to Covid, I used to go see my friend Andy's band, Adrian Blitzer, play shows here in Central PA. They'd do Deftones, Staind, House of Pain, and a bunch of other cool stuff. They had tons of energy and we were all completely exhausted by the end of their shows. It was a great release of pent up frustrations with the everyday world. I really miss those days. Country music is what I grew up on, especially the 90s country that holds a special spot in so many of my memories. Those songs transport me back to the back of pickup trucks, or the hot front porch of a friends house. They take me to summer camps and sleepovers. The country of today doesn't hold the same place in my memory box, so I don't really connect with it as much. Music is all about feeling for me, and I just can't feel shallow lyrics and boxed beats. Unfortunately, that's what I find most commercial country to be now. Every once in a while I'll hear a Zach Bryan song that I can listen to, but I definitely lean towards artists like Tyler Childers or Johnny Cash for my country fix when I need to hear some good old fashioned truth singing. Country music for me goes well with a cold beer, in a kayak, on a lake. In my teenage years, I listened to hip hop and rap because I really identified with it's message. Rap originated from oppressed people. People that were cast aside and forgotten about. My family was poor. We had enough to get by, but that was all we really ever did. The four of us lived in the same 2 bedroom second floor apartment my entire childhood, and I wore hand-me-downs from my older brother and ate government cheese. My parents didn't get along, and I was always getting chased around by the police. I saw other people that had a much better life than we did, and I wondered why they deserved it. I felt the struggle, even in my all white, low crime suburb in Central PA. My brother and I both got into trouble as a way of standing out as something other than the poor kids at school. I stole my parents minivan when I was 13 and took it on a 105 mile round trip to go joy riding with my cousin Big T and some of my closest friends, only to blow up the transmission 15 miles from home. Want to know what was playing on the stereo? Tupac's Don Killuminati Album. I did burnouts to Hail Mary, and put it on 2 wheels to Me and my girlfriend. Every time I hear that album it takes me back there. Reggae showed up as I was beginning to lose interest in hip hop. I started getting tattooed on a regular basis, and my tattoo artist would always be listening to Sublime. I've always been into the weed culture types of things, and Sublime's crazy lyrics and funky ass bass lines made it easier to sit in the tattoo chair for long stretches. Every time I hear a sublime song I think of the hours I spent getting inked to their music. Just about 5 years ago, I met my friend Brandon Fulk, and he introduced me to the band Stick Figure. Stick Figure is an American reggae band out of California. They play Cali-Style Reggae, along with other groups such as The Elovaters, Fortunate Youth, and Slightly Stoopid. This is my go-to kind of music for car trips in warm weather, or any weekends spent gigging at the beach. It's a high vibe, full chill genre of music that makes up 3/4 of my playlist at any time. The last genre I want to hit on is Americana. Artists like Jason Isbell, Donovan Woods, and The Lumineers paint beautiful pictures for you to gaze upon with just their lyrics. Their voices are smooth but weathered, and the way the instruments are played with just the right force to convey their message is an art. When I listen to “Elephant” by Jason Isbell, it makes me angry that cancer ruins lives. That it takes away the ones we love, a lot of the time before they even die. When I listen to “Good Lover” by Donovan woods, it reminds me of all the times I had settled for what I thought was love before I met my current girlfriend, Steph. I get why people say that phrase now, that they didn't know what love was until they met ______. Americana songs express life in ways that only they can. I could go on forever about music, but I'll save that for another episode. I would love to hear some songs that you love and what memories you associate them with. What songs take you back? What is an artists I should know about? What does music do for you? Thanks for listening or reading, and if you're coming to the shows this weekend, I'll see you there!

Garrett's dad Gary joins Rob and G about 30 minutes in and Rob asks him how he handled his son going into the music business and other things only a father would have the answers to ... haha ********* A little bit about G Love: Shortly after moving to Boston, Dutton (soon to be G Love) met Tom DeMille, a local producer Dutton later nicknamed T-Time, a reference to DeMille's appreciation for both music and golf).  In 1993, DeMille flew to New York to meet with a Los Angeles–based producer who had connections to Michael Jackson (arranged through a family friend). DeMille shared some studio and live recordings of Dutton, who had just started going by the moniker G. Love. Later in 1993, G. Love and Special Sauce (as the trio was now called) signed a record deal and released their first album in 1994. Known for his live shows, he is often seen touring with Jack Johnson and Citizen Cope. As a producer, Johnson signed G. Love to his record label Brushfire Records. He has made appearances on the records of artists such as Slightly Stoopid and Donavon Frankenreiter, and has toured with Dave Matthews. In 2009, he collaborated with Zap Mama on their album ReCreation, singing on the single "Drifting". In 2010, G. Love joined forces with The Avett Brothers who produced and are featured on his album "Fixin' to Die". The album was released under the Brushfire label on February 22, 2011. There is no feeling in the world quite like enjoying a concert on a summer night. The pandemic stripped us of that unique and awesome experience. Now, for the first time in years, many bands are returning to the road for live shows. The reggae, rock-fusion band Slightly Stoopid is among them. Their Summer Traditions 2022 Tour kicked off July 7 in Bonner, Montana. It's the first in an epic concert schedule concluding in San Diego, California. The ensemble was formed by Kyle McDonald and Miles Doughty in the mid 90s, pairing a unique style of California funk with reggae-inspired roots. Over the past two decades, Slightly Stoopid's sound has evolved but its message has consistently called for cannabis reform. The band launched its cannabis brand Stoopid Organics in mid 2021. Cannabis & Tech Today spoke with Doughty just before the band kicked off its summer tour to discuss his return to the road and why he's been such a passionate advocate for cannabis the last twenty years.Cannabis Tech Talks are brought to you thanks to the support of Polyscience. Roy Silverstein is the owner and chief engineer at Rarefied Recording in San Diego, CA. Originally from the Chicago area, Roy started his audio journey as a teenager, playing in basement bands and experimenting with 4 tracks. He quickly became obsessed with record making and the technical aspects of audio. This led him to the University of Miami where he studied Electrical Engineering with an audio emphasis; a special program that combined a full B.S.E.E. with a focus on audio applications. After college, Roy joined the Audio Systems team at Qualcomm, Inc. in San Diego and also started a home recording project studio called The Habitat.  While working on technical audio challenges for Qualcomm by day, Roy spent his nights and weekends refining his recording and mixing skills for both bands of his own and others. In time, the confines and limitations of the home studio became frustrating so Roy bought a property and began the process of building out a proper recording studio. With the help of studio designer Wes Lachot and in conjunction with master builder, Tony Brett, and wiring guru, Thom Canova, Rarefied Recording was born in June of 2013.  News of the studio spread very organically in the music community of San Diego and after a couple years, Roy went full time with Rarefied and hasn't looked back. Over the course of nearly 10 years now, Rarefied has been home to a wide assortment of artists and engineers spanning a multitude of genres and styles. Notable acts that have utilized the studio include San Diego's own Slightly Stoopid and Unwritten Law. Rarefied has also hosted some amazing engineers including Darrell Thorp (Foo Fighters, Beck, Radiohead) and Brian Scheuble (Fiona Apple, Tom Petty, Elton John). IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT: Why it's important to understand electronics and know how to troubleshoot Designing audio chips for cell phones Breaking the golden handcuffs of a comfy day job and transitioning into working in audio full time Learning the business side of running a studio Keeping track of your metrics Marketing your studio Creating depth in your mixes The dangers of using reverb How to dial in the right reverb times Why you should EQ reverbs Identifying the main element at every part of the song Using automation to make your mixes sound exciting Using parallel processing on your entire mix Shaping your mix with a Pultec To learn more about Roy Silverstein, visit: https://rarefiedrecording.com/ To learn more tips on how to improve your mixes, visit https://masteryourmix.com/ Download your FREE copy of the Ultimate Mixing Blueprint: https://masteryourmix.com/blueprint/ Get your copy of the #1 Amazon bestselling book, The Mixing Mindset – The Step-By-Step Formula For Creating Professional Rock Mixes From Your Home Studio: https://masteryourmix.com/mixingmindsetbook/ Join the FREE MasterYourMix Facebook community: https://links.masteryourmix.com/community To make sure that you don't miss an episode, make sure to subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or on Android. Bedouin Soundclash are a household name in Canada, The UK and other parts of the world. But in the US, they are a lesser known group. They formed in 2000 in Ontario, Canada and scored the big hit "When The Night Feels My Song" in 2004. The song made it to Radio 1 in the UK and got airplay on The Edge radio show in Toronto. Not only did "When The Night" launch their career, the song developed a life of its own.  It was everywhere. You could hear it in grocery stores, on TV ads and on kids shows. Years later, some Bedouin Soundclash fans were surprised to learn that this was one of their song since it was the soundtrack to their childhood. Bedouin took a hiatus for a decade, and returned in 2019 with the record Mass. But in 2022, they released their best record of their career (And one of the best ska albums of the 2022), We Will Meet In A Hurricane. We talk to Jay Malinowski and Eon Sinclair about this wonderful record and their interesting career. We also discuss the new albums' guest contributors: Aimee Interrupter (The Interrupters), Marcia Richards (The Skints), and Kathryn Calder (New Pornographers). The band talks about what it was like to open for No Doubt, Slightly Stoopid and to play the Vans Warped Tour twice. And they tell us some experiences of playing the Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival. We also talk bear sightings on their "Walk Through Fire" video shoot, working with Bad Brains' Darryl Jenifer on their early records, Jay's struggles with addiction, and what it was like for him to lose his voice at the Leeds Festival in 2006 and have the entire crowd sing for him. Plus we talk about Waffle House, a lot. Adam schools us all with Waffle House facts and Jay tells us a story he's never told before that involves tripping on mushrooms in a Waffle House and being terrified.Support the show

“When you're in that flow, it's the most magical feeling ever,” reflects the noted fine artist and graphic designer Jay Alders. “It feels like the colors are shooting out of my palette, it's just right there, and all I have to do is scoop up a glob of light that's emerging from my palette. If I can have someone look at my paintings and feel some of that, to me that's success.” Jay joins us on the podcast to discuss the collaborative nature of his work, which in addition to his own disarmingly original paintings also includes concert posters and album covers designed for artists such as Slightly Stoopid, 311, Donavon Frankenreiter, Citizen Cope, the Dirty Heads and Echo Movement. He has become well-known throughout the surfing community for his original surf art paintings, as well as for his “live art” performance displays at concerts and music festivals. His work—a blend of “surrealism, cartoon art and surrealism,” according to Forbes—has been presented in galleries across the United States and in Europe and featured at surf exhibitions from the North Shore of Oahu to the Jersey Shore, and he has lately emerged as a pioneer in the digital art space, with a series of dynamic, ocean-inspired NFTs. We're trading in our pens for our paintbrushes with this episode, but Jay's insights into the creative process, and the story of how he's turned his singular gifts into a successful freelance career, offer important takeaways for artists and writers alike. Matt talks about popular reggae wedding songs to play on your wedding day. Important Links View the complete list of reggae wedding songs. See all Wedding Songs Podcast episodes Podcast Transcript Hello, today I am going to be talking about Raggae wedding songs. You know, most of us, when we think about Reggae music we think of Bob Marley, of course, being the legend of Reggae music. There is so much more that you can play than just Bob Marley. First and foremost, I just want to say that I am not a Reggae wedding music expert. I did rely on DJ Curtis from the tri-state area (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut) and he offered me some tips on Reggae music to play. Now, I am not going to be covering all of the songs I mention on our website, I have a list of 100 songs on the site. I just want to give you an idea of what songs you can incorporate into your wedding day playlist. While you are on the website, make sure you sign up for our monthly newsletter of all the new wedding songs released in the previous month, plus what is trending. One good thing about our website is you can also listen to songs as well. As you know, I cannot play the music due to copyright laws (I don't want to get in trouble for that). Let's go ahead and get started with the first song I want to cover today. It is by a super-group called Stick Figure. For those of you who do know Reggae music, you know that Stick Figure should be on this list because they are a super-group in the genre. The first song was released in 2022 and is called “Way Of Life” was also with Slightly Stoopid. Lyrics include…I will carry you to the other side, To another place, to another life, I'll be there for you every day and night, Gonna bring you right back to the way of life. A pretty romantic song. So, another song that they released this year as well is called “Love Me Easy” with Stick Figure, ANORA, and Walshy Fire with the lyrics…You got the right kind of motion, I will give you devotion, Love me, love me, love me, easy. I think this is a great way to start this list of Reggae songs for your wedding. The next song on the list is Shenseea & Rvssian with “You're The One I Love”. Released in 2021, lyrics include…I'ma stay right by your side, Not a thing could change my mind, You are the one I love. The first song from 2020 is by Sean Paul. I do have a lot of Sean Paul songs on this list. This one is with Tove Lo and is called “Calling On Me” with the lyrics…Alright then, True love never fails, love never falls, Real love conquers all (Yeah). The second song, also from 2020, is “Smile” by WizKid feat. H.E.R. This really makes a great background song for cocktail hour or dinner. It just sets a love vibe with lyrics…I love your life, yeah, Love it when you smile, Say, I will do anything for my love, yeah yeah, I will do anything for my love. Next up is a cover of the Lee Brice song “Rumor” by Maoli with the lyrics…There's a rumor goin' 'round about me and you, Stirring up our little town, the last week or two, So tell me why you even tryna deny this feeling. One of my favorite groups in this genre is Michael Franti and Spearheads. This song features Cherine Tanya Anderson called “Say Hey I Love You”, released in 2018. Lyrics include…The more I see, the less I know, But I know one thing I love you (baby girl), I love you, I love you, I love you. Now, Rhianna is on a lot of Reggae song lists and the song I chose is “Pon De Replay”. This is a great dance tune and one that you should really incorporate into your party/dancing part of your wedding. This next song was actually recommended to me by a listener because he had it as his first dance song. The song is by Jah Cure and he did a cover of John Legend's song “All Of Me”. As you probably remember the lyrics include….You're my end and my beginning, Even when I lose, I'm winning, Cause I give you all of me, And you give me all of you. “Beautiful” by Seeed, released in 2014 with the lyrics…You saved my life...

My guest today is Steve Ornest a rock multi instrumentalist, engineer, and producer in Redondo Beach CA. Steve learned his studio skills at Total Access Recording under the guidance of Wyn Davis (RSR192) starting at the young age of 15. Steve started out playing guitar for rock sessions by bands like Don Dokken, Minoru Nihara (Loudness), and many others, but fast forward to the present and Steve is now running the studio with Wyn. Steve's mission has been to reinvigorate the local South Bay music scene by making it affordable for young local artists to come in and work on their song, EP or album and walk away with the same commercially competitive results Total Access has become known for over the past forty years. Aside from working with incredible local talent like Joker's Hand, Mor Flowrs and Hand Drawn Maps, Steve continues to work on records for legacy artists such as Foreigner and Dio. Steve is currently working on a record with country artist Annie Bosko, which features a duet with country legend Vince Gill. Steve has also worked alongside producers Ken Scott (Beatles, Elton John, Supertramp), Eric Sarafin (Ben Harper, Amy Grant), and many others.  Steve recently opened a 1000sq ft rehearsal suite steps away from the studio, called Total Access Rehearsal. The idea was born from a frustration at the lack of rehearsal studios in Los Angeles, particularly in the South Bay. The suite boasts an acoustically treated showcase room, top-of-the-line gear, a private lounge/bathroom, A/C, free water and coffee, private parking, and convenient roll-up entry. Total Access Recording has an extensive client list including L.A. punk band Black Flag and many SST Records artists, Husker-Du, The Descendants, then flourishing in the 80's hair metal era recording Dokken, Great White, and White Lion, followed in the 90's with post-punk artists; Sublime, No Doubt, Pennywise, Slightly Stoopid and others.  Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: http://MixMasterBundle.com THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS! https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academy Use code ROCKSTAR to get 10% https://samplyaudio.com Use code RSR20 to get 20% off for the first 3 months https://www.Spectra1964.com http://MacSales.com/Rockstars http://iZotope.com/Rockstars use code ROCK10 for 10% off http://www.thetoyboxstudio.com http://UltimateMixingMasterclass.com Hear guests discography on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1GUS4vcFjyIvjRy8RYDwKi?si=3c12b4cd6c2b4f0c If you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/Review CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: http://RSRockstars.com/357

Mickey Avalon's life story plays out like an episode of VH1′s ‘Behind The Music,” marred by personal tragedy, triumphs and immense pain. Avalon's back-story begins on the streets of Hollywood, California. Raised by his heroin-addicted father, he began selling pot at a young age, a trade he acquired from his mother. In an attempt to clean up his act, Mickey converted to Orthodox Judaism in his late teens, an effort that didn't last due to constant family tragedy, such as his father's death in a tragic drunk driving accident. By his early 20s, Mickey had married, had a daughter, and moved out of California, relocating to Portland, Oregon. The serine surroundings of the Pacific Northwest couldn't hide Mickey from his past for long, as his drug addled Hollywood lifestyle caught up with him in the form of an uncontrollable heroin addiction. As his life neared rock bottom, Mickey found himself broke, divorced, and turning to prostitution, just to support his smack habit. With a desire to once again get his life back on track, Avalon moved in with his sister, and the pair set out on the road to recovery. Tragedy struck again when his sister relapsed, and died from a heroin overdose. After the deaths of both his father and sister, Mickey decided that he wanted more out of life, moved back to Los Angeles, and chose to make one final attempt to clean up his act. Shortly after his return, Mickey was befriended by ex-MTV VJ Simon Rex (aka Dirt Nasty), who encouraged Avalon to pursue his passion of hip-hop and even collaborated with him on some tracks. At the time, Avalon was staying in a sober living facility and had a strict curfew, so Dirt Nasty began passing out Mickey's demo at Hollywood clubs, which helped Mickey develop a following among fans of the Los Angeles nightclub scene. As Mickey's popularity grew, he began to sell out clubs throughout California with his legendary live show. Soon after Interscope Records took notice of the guerilla promotions tactics and signed Avalon to the label in 2005. Through Interscope, Avalon released his now classic self-titled debut album, which showcased his unique rhyming style and indulgent lyrics. Inspired by his experiences on the streets with drugs and prostitution, the raw honesty of his songs immediately resonated with audiences. Fan favorites “Jane Fonda,” “Mr. Right” and “My Dick” quickly spread across the internet and mainstream radio, turning Mickey Avalon into a household name. Avalon quickly took to the road and was performing sold-out shows alongside the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Travis Barker and DJ AM, Snoop Dogg, Stephen Marley and Slightly Stoopid. Mickey's contagious demeanor and unique writing style has made him a hot commodity in the music industry as hip-hop artist Young Jeezy and producer Jermaine Dupri jumped at the chance to collaborate with him for a Boost Mobile commercial. Avalon then joined forces with rock acts the Happy Mondays, and Unwritten Law, with whom he co-wrote the radio hit “Shoulda Known Better”. His music has been featured in countless movies and television series including the HBO's series Hung, the animated series American Dad, the Duke Nukem Forever video game, Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay and most recently in the trailers for the Cameron Diaz film “Bad Teacher.” --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dadcastco/support

This conversation is a deep dive into creativity, artistic inspiration, and what it looks (and feels like) to dedicate yourself to your art.  We flipped the switch today for this episode. Artist, father, aspiring author, and serial entrepreneur Jay Alders is interviewed by fellow artist Tom Shepherd. Jay Alders is a New Jersey shore based visual artist inspired by the beach, nature, ocean culture, romance, spirituality and surrealistic scenes from his mind's eye.  Alders' work has been seen around the world. From covers of magazines and on album art of music legends like Slightly Stoopid, Mishka and Echo Movement to TV appearances and on licensed products on shelves of your favorite stores. Tom is based in Warwickshire, England. The birthplace of Shakespeare. He himself is a full-time artist that focuses on wildlife paintings and landscapes in watercolor and oil. And he spends a lot of time teaching and now on lockdown with his wife and new baby. This interview was originally broadcast on Tom's own podcast, Creative Perspectives Podcast. But it was one of those magical conversations between artists worth sharing. So today, we bring it to you on Shifting Perceptions. The dialogue floated between many topics that a creative person of any medium can relate to. We spoke about the grind and hustle of making it as an artist. And how the landscape of business has changed and evolved since the early days of social media. We talked about the challenges of finding time (and opportunity) as an artist and how to tap into flow states when creating art.  I talk about my personal philosophies and strategies around being a full-time artist and how purpose, intention, and having a mission are at the center of my mindset. I really enjoyed having the roles reversed on this one. I hope you find this inspiring and entertaining as we both did.
