We are here today to talk with John Callas about his very personal memoir “When The Rain Stops”. A must read if you have been traumatized, abandoned, battled depression and/or ever had thoughts of suicide and even attempted it. John Callas is a veteran writer/director/producer in the entertainment business and was the Worldwide VP for The Walt Disney Company. He was even at the beginning of the MTV launch making music video history. John was awarded ‘Best Concept' for Glenn Frey's “Smugglers Blues”, produced music videos for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and probably one of the most iconic music videos of all time, and my favorite, Sammy Hager's “I Can't Drive 55”. John Callas produced and director many if not the most of the television episodes of Howie Mandel's “Bobby's World”. As for major motion pictures, John Callas' work can be seen on live action teasers for Ransom (with Mel Gibson), Dennis The Menace (with Walter Matthau), Body Of Evidence, The Golden Child (with Eddie Murphy), Glenngarry Glenn Ross (with Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alan Arkin, a young Alec Baldwin), as well as title sequences For The Two Jakes and A Few Good Men (with Tom Cruise, Demi Moore and Jack Nicholson).

Frustrated fans fuming about this past weekend's Kultureland Festival near Toronto may soon get some answers from organizers. A severe summer storm on Sunday night couldn't keep Shania Twain from closing out the Boots and Hearts festival in her native Ontario. Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea said last week that he's not big on posing for pics with fans. Beyoncé's Renaissance has become the first album by a female artist to top the U.S. chart since Adele's 30 ended its six-week run in January. Original Articles by John R. The original Woodstock festival is look back at as a celebration of peace and love that defined a generation. Woodstock '94 looked to replicate that vibe for a younger generation…but Woodstock '99 was a much darker animal. Fires, vandalism, violence, sexual assaults, all fueled by a soundtrack of bands like Korn, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kid Rock, and most infamously, Limp Bizkit.

Welcome back to another informative look at the world of music from us here at Riot Act. It's the final week of lovely Sam Sleight's stand in tenure, and as such we have given him free reign to run us through his 20 favourite albums of all time. And there are some absolute cracking picks in there, if we do say so ourselves. Before we get to that Steve and Sam talk about brand new albums from both Jack White and Working Men's Club, discuss the relative merits of the recent Mercury Mercury Prize nominations, cross their fingers for both a Kinks and Pulp reunion in 2023 and then recoil in horror at the new that there is another Red Hot Chili Peppers double album careering our way. And last but not least, our fun facts of the day (40:19 - 48:40).
If you like music, Chicago culture and kickass tavern food, this is your episode. Photographer Gene Ambo joins me to talk about his massive new coffee table book, “HEAVY METRO: ACCESS ALL ERAS.” The book covers 40 years of live music on and off the legendary stage of Chicago's Metro (3730 N. Clark Street). The book is a mind-blowing collection of performance and backstage shots, including metal giants Slayer, Metallica and Motorhead; alternative superstars Smashing Pumpkins, Jane's Addiction, Ramones, Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers; and punk heroes like Naked Raygun and Descendents. We talk about the stories behind the shots, and the moods and the attitudes of the artists in the pictures. This episode was fueled by the insanely good burgers at Circle Tavern (18 Conti Parkway, Elmwood Park). Owner/all around kickass dude Mike Jardine jumped in the backseat to join in the conversation and talk about Circle Tavern's menu and history. No joke: The double burgers are completely legit and worth a trip to Elmwood Park. Now is the time to go solar! Introducing Transparent Solar. When the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik first came out, I'd just left a job working in a record store and was doing some part-time work as a mobile DJ. I had a few regular gigs here and there on Long Island, which is where it's at when you do that sort of thing, because you get to know your crowd and who likes what, etc. Weddings and birthday parties, etc. were just Death on a Triscuit, because you have guests of all different ages, and the old people want to hear one thing, and the young people want to hear something else, and there are always arguments about the volume...feh. I hated doing that stuff. At any rate, I was working in a bar in Franklin Square, NY at this point and this crowd absolutely loved this track. That was a cool bunch, with a lot of that adult alternative stuff. I enjoyed working there except for two things: The equipment was stored in the bar's basement, which meant going outside into the alley out back, going downstairs to get it, dragging it upstairs and setting it up, and having to und0 it all at the end of the night; The setup was on floor level, which meant that any drunk moron could—and sometimes did—crash directly into my stuff. And since I was still playing records sometimes, that made for some audio disasters. I would have stayed longer if I hadn't broken my ankle and moved 30 miles away in the interim (long, long story there). I also liked my boss and he'd throw me other work from time to time. Ah, well. Incidentally, I didn't mention this during the episode but the song has been covered about a dozen times and sampled more than twice that many. In fact, Busta Rhymes' "Break Ya Neck" owes so much to "Give it Away" that all of the musicians who played on "Give it Away" appear on the record's credits as co-writers. (It's not so much a sampling as it is Rhymes inserting the chorus into the song.) Click here for a transcript of the episode. Click here to support the show via Patreon.

Recently, comedian Jon Daly noticed there was a cruise line with some 90s ska bands as its entertainment. It got him thinking...what if ska came back, and it was from a ska cruise. This silly thought inspired him to write the song, "Bring Back Ska," which is featured on his new musical comedy album, Ding Dong Delicious. This isn't Jon's only run-in with ska. He also played Skaat, the lead singer of Skaffirmative Action, on the TV show Those Who Can't. His band is played by members of The Aquabats, and Jon crams as many ska puns into every one of his scenes as is humanly possible. So with all of this in mind, we invited Jon on the show to talk about ska. Jon, it turns out, doesn't have an encyclopedia knowledge of the genre, though he "knows enough about ska to make fun of it." We have a good time discussing Skankin' Pickle, Operation Ivy, Sublime, No Doubt, Fishbone, Hepcat, The Specials, Madness and Buck-O-Nine. But we also talk about lots of non-ska artists, including Kenny G, Billy Joel, Man Man, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Led Zeppelin. During the conversation, we also talk about why Captain hats are creepy, how the movie Swingers impacted people's perception of ska, Sublime conspiracy theories, which band is the most Nu-Metal, his arch-nemesis John Daly--the golfer, and which band needs to record a ska song NOW. My guests today are music producer Rick Rubin and poet, translator, scholar, and anthologist Stephen Mitchell. You may have heard Rick's name over the years as one of the founders of DEF jam records, nine-time Grammy winner, host and creator of the TV documentary show 'McCartney 3, 2, 1' and host of the podcast Broken Record. Rick has worked with artists such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slayer, Johnny Cash, Kanye West, Jay Z and the Beastie Boys. As a friend, Rick had gifted me a book 'Tao Te Ching' by Lao Tzu, and he had given me the Stephen Mitchell version. Fortunately, Stephen Mitchell is a friend of mine. His works include the Bhagavad-Gita, Gilgamesh, The Gospel According to Jesus, and Loving What Is, which he co-authored with his wife Byron Katie. It was a real dream for me to have these two men sitting across from one another to have a conversation prompted by the Tao. Both of them are thoughtful, creative, precise, and unique in their approach to living. I hope you enjoy.
