Sorti en 1991 et présenté par certains, à l'image de l'animateur Waxx, comme l'un des plus grands disques rock de tous les temps, ce projet est un véritable pilier des années 90. Il s'agit d'ailleurs du deuxième plus gros succès commercial de la formation californienne, juste derrière "Californication". Produit par Rick Rubin, l'album a été enregistré dans un manoir de Los Angeles ayant prétendument appartenu au magicien Houdini, un lieu atypique choisi pour stimuler la créativité du groupe. Le résultat est une magistrale démonstration funk-rock, portée par une énergie brute et lumineuse. La chronique retrace la richesse de ce disque groovy, de l'ouverture percutante "The Power of Equality" à la basse incontournable de Flea sur "Funky Monks", en passant par le jeu de guitare de John Frusciante sur l'explosif "Give It Away". The Butthole Surfers started way back in 1981 with Gibby Haynes and Paul Leary started a band. They quickly grew a reputation in Texas and throughout the country as one of the most provocative and outlandish bands in the country. They had a massive influence on contemporary artists like Kurt Cobain, White Zombie, and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They hit massive success with their album electriclarryland and the single Pepper. After the success of their album they had a follow album After the Astronaut, but because of disputes with their record label and problems with their manager they never were able to release it until now. The band is planning on releasing it June 26th 2026. Before the album is released Paul was nice enough to come on the show! The records coming out didn't sound like the club. They were made by professionals who didn't go to the club. So at 18, while a freshman at NYU, he made one himself — "It's Yours" with T La Rock. It sold 100,000 copies in 18 months. He put his dorm room address on the sleeve. This launched Def Jam Recordings. LL Cool J's first record came next. The Beastie Boys after that. His credit on those records didn't say "produced by." It said "reduced by" — a theological statement as much as a job title. His method has never changed: strip everything down until what remains has no place to hide, then protect whatever magic appears. Inspired by North African gnawa music, he picked up a Moroccan sintir (three-stringed bass lute) and with guidance from Hassan Hakmoun and Maalem Mahmoud Gania, he has become one of a handful of Western musicians proficient on the instrument. He puts all of the shared sacred teachings and wisdom to good use in Club d'Elf, the jazz-world-dub-electronica squad he formed in 1998. Club d'Elf can be heard across more than 15 albums over the past 25 years; an eclectic, pioneering collective with a vast array of co-conspirators from around the world. After a video directed by Geoff Moore for their song "Uppity, Yuppity Doolittle" came to the attention of Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard, the band was signed to Gossard‘s record label Loosegroove. They released three albums with Loosegroove before the company folded in 2000: "Nut-meg says Bozo the Town" (1994), Highperspice (1996), and Nutmeg Phantasy (1998). In 2001, the band dropped Illoominutty on Fishbone's Nuttsactor 5 record label, and in 2003, they released Color Me Funky. Since 1997, Lonnie has performed alongside members of P Funk and Fishbone, among others, as part of Trulio Disgracias - a constantly mutating funk-rock-jazz collective headed by by Norwood Fisher. Lonnie was an emcee, composer, and performer for daKAH, a 65 piece hip-hop orchestra which coalesced periodically in the Los Angeles area for many years. Before that, Marshall wrote, recorded and toured with the legendary Joe Strummer of The Clash, behind Strummer's dynamic 1989 solo debut Earthquake Weather.
