In the midst of the late 2015 charts that featured the likes of Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Adele, and Drake, you'll find Elle King, the raspy-voiced singer-songwriter whose sound was a cross between country and rock. Her Top 10 hit “Ex's & Oh's” was a critically acclaimed track that describes Elle's past relationships with needy men and how they tend to come back to haunt her. The music video flipped gender roles and satirized the objectification of women by featuring a whole host of scantily-clad men, and Elle seemed to be a strong feminist voice that would be in our lives for a long time. She even had a crossover appeal that allowed her to share the stage with anyone from Modest Mouse to Ed Sheeran. Has enough time even passed for us to be able to officially call Elle King a one hit wonder, or should we all be yelling “you can do it!” while she works on new material? Today, we're joined by podcaster and YouTuber Robert Bacon to dive into her career and see if we should be “makin' copies” of her albums for each other. Plus: His Crazy Car Accident, Comic Books, Letters From Prison, Hegseth, Hampshire College Closing and More! Comedians are under attack. The MAGA machine has pushed Stephen Colbert off the air, gone after Jimmy Kimmel, and skipped a comedian at the White House Correspondents Dinner for the first time in memory. That's not an accident — it's the playbook of every authoritarian regime that ever feared a punchline. Paul Rieckhoff sits down with his old college friend, beloved comedian and actor Eugene Mirman — Bob's Burgers, Flight of the Conchords, and the new special Here Comes the Whimsy — for a candid, funny, and unexpectedly moving conversation about what it means to make people laugh while the rigged two-party system burns and Trump and the executive branch goes all gas, no brakes. Eugene, a refugee from a genuinely authoritarian country, doesn't sugarcoat it: Trump's instincts are fascist, the cruelty is the point, and the use of state power to threaten billion-dollar companies into firing comedians is straight out of the thug-regime handbook. But he also refuses nihilism — America, he argues, is too big and too used to freedom to be wholly silenced, and that's exactly why the work of comedians, podcasters, and independent voices matters right now. Along the way the two cover Eugene's harrowing New Hampshire car crash and rescue, the absurd unqualified men running the Pentagon and the VP's office, comic books as hopeful dystopia, and why the angry middle should keep laughing — and keep showing up. Eugene Mirman is one of the most respected comedic voices of his generation. A refugee from the former Soviet Union, he is best known as the voice of Gene Belcher on Bob's Burgers and as the landlord on Flight of the Conchords, and was a regular on Adult Swim's Delocated. He co-founded the Pretty Good Friends comedy company in the basement of Brooklyn's Union Hall, has opened for The Shins, Modest Mouse, Yo La Tengo, Gogol Bordello, and Cake, and was named best New York City comedian by The Village Voice. A graduate of Hampshire College — where he designed his own major in comedy and delivered a one-hour stand-up set as his thesis — his latest special is Here Comes the Whimsy. -WATCH full video of this episode here. -Watch/hear Eugene Mirman's hilarious new special album: Here Comes the Whimsy. -Check out Eugene's Pretty Good Friends. -Ditch your expensive carrier and support Independent Americans! Luxury Noise called upon longtime Coast 2 Coast Collective collaborator San Gabriel for episode 98 of "Hot Takes"! A classically trained and multifaceted musician, San Gabriel's background is in guitar and banjo playing for a bluegrass punk band, touring 49 of the 50 United States and myriad countries worldwide as well. And now he makes psychedelic synth-infused dream pop! If you couldn't be present for the live broadcast, tune in to hear about topics such as San Gabriel's daily songwriting process, influences like Built to Spill and Modest Mouse, and a lively debate about the merits of drums vs. flats. Artist Bootsy Holler joined Seattle's punk and grunge scene while it was taking off. Then, she documented the genesis of the “post-grunge” independent music boom of the early 2000s. She photographed many of the bands that would go on to define the “indie” scene: like Death Cab for Cutie, Fleet Foxes, Gossip, Modest Mouse, Interpol and more. Whether the bands are onstage or in a portrait, her photos are full of movement, life and quirk. When you see them, you feel like you can almost hear the microphone feedback and smell the sweaty crowd at the Crocodile or El Corazon. Her new book is "Making It: An Intimate Documentary of the Seattle Indie, Rock & Punk Scene, 1992–2008". On today's show, we're chatting with Tacee Webb, the original founder of Red Light Vintage in Seattle – a store she first opened in her early 20s in 1996 and is now buying back from its current owners 30 years later! Full circle story! Red Light has been a Seattle institution since the grunge era, known for its eclectic mix of vintage finds from the 1930s through the 1990s, its vibrant community spirit, and oh yes – its legendary naked shopping sprees. In this episode, Tacee takes us on a journey that starts on a tiny island near the Canadian border, where she grew up surrounded by her family's belongings dating back to the 1860s – from her Native American grandmother's furniture to Victorian dresses in the old log cabin. She shares how selling rusty anchors and clay pinch pots on the beach as a kid planted the seeds for a career in retail, and how an encounter with a glamorous vintage dealer in her teens changed everything for her. We dive into the wild days of Red Light in the '90s – when MTV was filming there, Courtney Love was tearing through the store, and Tacee became one of the biggest sneaker resellers in the business – at the time she was featured in the Wall Street Journal, Vogue, NPR, People, CNN, and tons of magazines in Japan. "We would get 100 voice mails a day – people calling me to sell their sneakers from all over the country, it was WILD!" Tacee wrote me. She shares stories about styling Alice in Chains for Rolling Stone, hosting bands like Modest Mouse in the store's cafe, and why she old Red Light in 1999, the bittersweet reality of watching Seattle boom and price out the creative class. Late last year, when she saw the Vanishing Seattle post announcing the original store's potential closure, she knew she wanted it back. Now, partnering with her daughter – who's been part of the Red Light story since she was a baby – Tacee is bringing back the beloved traditions while reimagining vintage retail for a new generation. It's a conversation spanning decades of vintage fashion history from someone who's lived it all. This episode is SUCH a fun one, so let's dive right in! DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE: [7:09] Growing up on the San Juan islands in Washington, and her first "store" called The Rust Factory. [10:42] How Tacee's style evolved from small-town vintage fashion lover, influenced by Madonna, her Pan Am flight attendant mother's Pucci collection, and family heirlooms. [15:46] Her first encounter with vintage dealer Gloria and putting a 1890s wedding gown on layaway as a teenager. [18:59] Red Light became a vintage hub on the Avenue in Seattle after it opened in 1996. [22:12] Red Light was grunge rock headquarters including a cafe space where bands like Modest Mouse played, and MTV filming there constantly. [26:34] How Red Light approached vintage retail like traditional retail in the '90s. [28:15] The reworking and upcycling happening at Red Light in the '90s [29:38] Stories from the grunge era: styling Layne Staley for Rolling Stone, having Kurt Cobain's clothing in the store, and Courtney Love's shopping sprees. [37:36] Why Tacee sold Red Light in Seattle back in 1999. [42:15] How seeing the Vanishing Seattle post about Red Light potentially closing made Tacee realize she wanted her store back. [44:06] Partnering with her daughter – who has been part of Red Light since she was a baby– to take over ownership. [48:27] Red Light will re-open under Tacee right in time for its 30th anniversary, with a celebration weekend including a fashion show, and the return of the naked shopping spree. [56:42] Reimagining Red Light for a new generation with a membership-based vintage wardrobe lending library. [1:05:08] People kept asking Tacee when vintage would "go out of style" in the '90s, and her philosophy on fashion cycles. [1:08:33] How Tacee created vintage denim and sneaker buying guides in the '90s (pre-internet!) to educate dealers and pickers. [1:09:58] Tacee's massive sneaker buying operation and trips to Japan. [1:22:54] Her parents' incredible vintage collection on the San Juan island [1:25:12] Plans for an anti-fascist themed fashion show as a benefit for ACLU and other local organizations, including other vintage shops and dealers. There's something uniquely captivating about the way Modest Mouse balances hope and despair. On their breakthrough 2004 album "Good News for People Who Love Bad News," the Seattle-based band created a remarkable collection that propelled them from indie darlings to mainstream success without sacrificing their distinctive sound.Lead singer Isaac Brock's vocals—alternating between Harry Carey-esque drawls and Bobcat Goldthwait-style frantic outbursts—provide the perfect vehicle for lyrics that explore life's darkness while occasionally surfacing for gulps of optimistic air. The hit single "Float On" might have been what introduced many listeners to the band, but diving deeper into the album reveals a treasure trove of equally compelling tracks.Water imagery flows throughout the record, from "Ocean Breathes Salty" to the recurring theme of floating versus sinking. These aquatic metaphors perfectly capture the album's central tension: how do we stay afloat when life threatens to pull us under? Songs like "The View" surprise with disco-influenced rhythms, while "Bukowski" embraces a nihilistic perspective with surprisingly catchy instrumentation including banjo and horns. What makes this album endure nearly two decades later is its unflinching honesty about life's challenges coupled with moments of unexpected beauty. The delicate string arrangements on "Blame It on the Tetons" provide a stunning counterpoint to the raw energy of tracks like "Bury Me With It." It's this willingness to explore contrasts—between hope and despair, between punk roots and pop sensibilities—that makes the album such a compelling listen from start to finish.Have you revisited this album lately? We'd love to hear which non-hit tracks resonated with you most. Sometimes the songs that didn't make radio playlists contain the most profound truths about staying afloat when bad news threatens to drag us down.Send us a textSupport the show
"Baby Man" The Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Eric D. Johnson has one of the most consistently wonderful bodies of work you'll ever run to in this lifetime. From his 2001 debut Echolocation to albums like The Ruminant Band, Tripper, Gold Past Life, A River Running To Your Heart to his brand new one Baby Man, Johnson's discography has no dips and or musical unforced errors--every note, every melody, every turn of phrase is deeply affecting and altogether stirring. The Chicago-born Johnson is a prolific songwriter, who, in addition to his Fruit Bats endeavors, was a member of The Shins and currently is one-third of the the exquisite folk trio Bonny Light Horseman. Over the course of their career, the Fruit Bats have toured with everyone from Modest Mouse to The Sadies, had their songs covered by folks like The Decemberists and Guster, had their songs appear in movies like Youth In Revolt and Our Idiot Brother and played festivals like Bonnaroo, Pickathon and the Dave Matthews Band Caravan. By the way, this is a partial list, but here's a few more resume' highlights: they've garnered rave reviews from No Depression, Variety and MOJO, recorded a cover of the Smashing Pumpkins album Siamese Dream and played on late night shows like Craig Ferguson and Seth Meyers. As for the new album Baby Man, it may be hushed and intimate, but it's also decidedly rousing. A spare collection of songs where Johnson handles all of the instruments, Baby Man is subtle, personal and spare, but it shimmers with pure pop majesty. www.fruitbatsmusic.com www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers: BLUESKY + IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Modest Mouse’s lead singer, guitarist and songwriter has one of the longest, and most disjointed, last meals in Your Last Meal history, but each dish draws from a lifetime of experiences and memories. A lover of culinary highs and lows, Isaac wants both traditional Japanese ramen and Top Ramen for his last meal, something he ate a lot of in his younger years. We’ll learn the history of instant noodles with Andrea Wang, author of the children’s book Magic Ramen: The Story of Momofuku Ando. Isaac tells host Rachel Belle about the bar he used to own in Portland, Oregon (and why he made a rule to never drink there!); what sorts of hijinks he’s been roped into doing on an upcoming Modest Mouse cruise; and his quest to figure out a mysterious dish his parents made him for breakfast when he was a kid. R.E.M. put out a multitude of hits in college, modern, and alternative rock genres in the 80's and 90's. By the time that Around the Sun, the group's 13th studio album was released, the band was experiencing changes in personnel and struggles with focus. Drummer Bill Berry retired in 1997 and was replaced by Bill Reiflin. While Reiflin would be the regular percussionist for the band until their dissolution in 2011, he would not be considered a member of the band like Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass, keyboards), or Michael Stipe (vocals). From a commercial standpoint the album was a success, going to number 13 on the Billboard 200 in the US, and topping the album chart in the UK. However, critical reviews were more negative, and the band members would agree over time with Stipe and Mills stating that the album lacked focus. Peter Buck was more critical, stating that the album shows that the band was bored with the material. Many consider this the worst R.E.M. studio album the group produced. However, with the benefit of hindsight we think this album is due for a second look. The songs are more adult-oriented than the bands hits from prior decades, yet maintain the distinctive R.E.M. sound. There is a cleaner production on this album and clearer lyrics.Rob brings us a great debut folk rock album in this week's podcast.Leaving New YorkThe lead off track was also the lead single from the album. It reached number 5 on the UK singles chart, making it the eleventh and last top-10 REM single in that country. However, it was not heavily promoted and failed to crack the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming the first US single from an REM studio album not to chart since 1985. It has a somber tone.WanderlustThis was the fourth and final single from the album, and utilizes a complex time signature of 4/4 time in the verses and 7/4 in the chorus. The title references the desire to travel, and not remain in one place for very long. "I got my signals crossed. It's overwhelming me because I'm all alone and I cant get back - get back with my wanderlust."AftermathThe second single from the album portrays a woman living in a daze after a breakup. Overwhelmed by ruminations, she overfeeds the cat and underwaters the plants. It went to number 15 on the US alternative rock chart and number 41 on the UK singles chart. around the sunThe album contains a title track - a rarity on REM albums. It begins with a soft acoustic guitar leading into pensive lyrics. "Hold on world, 'cause you don't know what's coming. Hold on world, 'cause I'm not jumping off. Hold on to this boy a little longer, take another trip around the sun." STAFF PICKS:1985 by Bowling for SoupBruce starts the staff picks with a song about a middle-aged woman thinking about how things have changed since her glory days in 1985. It is a cover song originally done by pop punk band SR-71, but made famous by the Bowling for Soup version. It went to number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 5 on the Adult Top 40. Float On by Modest MouseLynch brings us a track that songwriter and band founder Isaac Brock says was consciously written to feel more positive than some of his previous work. The lyrics are stoic - not getting caught up in the bad things, because good things are around the corner. "Alright, already, we'll all float on."I Go Back by Kenny ChesneyWayne's flips the script on us by bringing a country song into the mix, but with lyrics that talk about listening to rock songs in the past. With references to the Steve Miller Band, Billy Joel, Sunday church, Sunday lunch, and the death of a High School friend, Chesney recounts days gone by. COMEDY TRACK:Goofy Goober Rock by SpongeBob SquarePants"The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" was released around this time, and included this parody of a Twisted Sister song. HOLD ONTO YOUR V*&INAS! M3GAN IS BACK….BUT IS IT AN UPGRADE? Blumhouse/Atomic Monster hit M3GAN is back with a sequel that swings so far from its horror origins the WS+ boys couldn't review it without bringing on their YouTube brother in arms John Horgan from the “...And Now For Something a Little Bit Different” channel. Director Gerald Johnstone was clearly given free range to give us a sequel that ostensibly wants to be “Terminator 2 meets Demolition Man” but is THAT what fans of the original asked for? Is this 2.0 upgrade worth downloading? Or is all the AI/Mission Impossible/Singing and Dancing Cyborg schtick already obsolete? Steven and Ian begin this week's episode by noting the returns of two indie-rock favorites from the 2000s — Grizzly Bear and Fiery Furnaces are both returning to the road later this year (0:42). (Given that Grizzly Bear's Shields was recently inducted in the Indiecast Hall Of Fame, could this be evidence of the vaunted Indiecast bump?)The guys also talk about an upcoming fall tour from Modest Mouse and Built To Spill, and weigh the catalogs of these iconic bands against each other (7:32). Then they discuss the latest song by Alex G, a teaser for his upcoming RCA Records debut LP (19:05). In the mailbag, a listener asks whether being a music critic makes it harder to be a music fan (28:19). The guys also answer an email about Sleep Token, which makes this the second consecutive episode with Sleep Token discourse. In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about the latest from the UK band Caroline and Steven goes for the Chicago guitarist Eli Winter (53:35).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. This week's mixtape rewind takes us back to an earlier season where we were joined by Tony Smith, formerly of the band Sleeper Agent.Tony Smith's musical journey begins with Saturday mornings filled with Christopher Cross's "Ride Like the Wind" – his mother's chosen soundtrack for family cleaning day – and ends with the transcendent experience of Bon Iver's "Naeem."Each selection marks a transformative moment: discovering Ben Kweller's "Wasted and Ready" at 3am led to a shift away from nu-metal toward indie rock; encountering The Pixies' "Debaser" completely redirected his career aspirations from filmmaking to music; and Modest Mouse's "Trailer Trash" became a personal anthem while working two jobs during high school, feeling trapped in his Kentucky hometown. What makes this episode special is Smith's vulnerability in sharing how deeply these songs penetrated his life. With three tattoos inspired by tracks on his mix, he demonstrates how music becomes physically part of our identity. His emotional description of waiting years to hear Bon Iver's "Naeem" in studio form – "my body filled with this strange chill and warmth at the same time" – perfectly captures music's power to move us beyond words. You can find his Spotify playlist here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1RyTOvV7DHYRfW4UdDHTry?si=610402a96acc4fe4 You can find the Super Awesome Mix app list here: https://app.superawesomemix.com/i3BxT4TjZeZyZ4Gb8 Preview of his list:I Want You Back by The Jackson 5Bad, Bad Leroy Brown by Jim CroceWorking Man by RushMMMBop by HansonWasted & Ready by Ben KwellerDebaser by PixiesTrailer Trash by Modest MouseHummingbird by WilcoLust For Life by GirlsFalling In Love Again by Joyce ManorSomething by Julien BakerNaeem by Bon IverFollow us @superawesomemix on Instagram to discover more personal musical journeys and share your own musical milestones that defined different chapters of your life.Support the showVisit us at https://www.superawesomemix.com to learn more about our app, our merchandise, our cards, and more!

Welcome back to Transmissions, your weekly conversational series from Aquarium Drunkard in partnership with the Talkhouse Podcast Network. This week on the show, a long awaited return visit from Lonnie Holley. The Atlanta artist joins us alongside his manager, Matt Arnett, son of William Arnett, the Southern art curator and collector who brought Holley to the attention of the art world in the 1980s. In those days, Holley often worked directly with trash—taking discarded materials to forge his sculptures. Philip K. Dick has said “the symbols of the divine show up in our world initially at the trash stratum,” and in Lonnie's case, that truth is made evident. His art draws from what's thrown out—a theme he returns to often—but also from personal tragedy: first artistic project was carving headstones for his sister's two children, who died in a house fire in Alabama in 1979. Since then, his found-object assemblages, paintings, and collages have endeared him to the fine art world—they have even been displayed in the Smithsonian and the White House—in part due to the patronage and care of Arnett's father. But the younger Arnett helped Holley get on the path he walks know, as an oracular sculpture of sound. Lonnie and Matt join us ahead of the March 21st release of Holley's new album, Tonky. Crafted with Irish producer Jacknife Lee (R.E.M., U2, The Killers) and featuring guests like Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse, harpist Mary Lattimore, rappers Billy Woods and Open Mike Eagle, spoken word from Saul Williams, and others, Tonky rattles with blues-punk-industrial art folk anthems. We discussed the new album, Holley's poetic metaphysics, and his work with kindred spirit Richard Swift. You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more.
