Screenwriting Legends SCOTT ALEXANDER and LARRY KARASZEWSKI discuss their origin stories of being film nerds, drive-in movies, how looking on the back of Variety was glorious when they were kids, how Shakey's Pizza's silent movies influenced them, meeting the first hour at school and deciding to go to the Nuart Theater in Los Angeles, why they program screenings including The Wrong Guy, what makes a good story from real life, why offbeat losers make better subjects than heroes, how directors like Tim Burton are loyal to the script and love stories of art and outsiders, why awards are fun but stupid, their process of deciding on ideas in a shockingly random way, sinking time into ideas that go nowhere, the amazing Marx Brothers movie that can't seem to get made, how they can't shake a movie once they love it, how producers are just as stupid as they are, whether everyone has a movie in their lives and why someone doesn't make a bio movie about them, and how pickleball can save your life! Bio:SCOTT ALEXANDER and LARRY KARASZEWSKI met when they were freshman roommates at USC's School of Cinema. On a whim, they wrote a screenplay during their senior year, which sold a week after graduation. They are best known for writing very unusual biopics with larger-than-life characters. They wrote the highly-acclaimed ED WOOD, for which they were nominated for Best Screenplay by the Writers Guild. They followed this with THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, for which they won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay, as well as a special Writers Guild award for civil rights and liberties. They scripted the extremely postmodern MAN ON THE MOON, the life story of Andy Kaufman. They wrote BIG EYES, the strange-but-true story of Margaret and Walter Keane, for which they received an Indie Spirit Best Screenplay nomination. For their first television project, they created the hit miniseries AMERICAN CRIME STORY: THE PEOPLE V. O.J. SIMPSON, for which they won the Emmy, Golden Globe, PGA and WGA Award for Best Limited Series. Their most recent film, DOLEMITE IS MY NAME, is the celebrated tale of Rudy Ray Moore. Other than biopics, Alexander and Karaszewski are quite eclectic. They wrote the hit Stephen King adaptation 1408. They produced the Bob Crane biopic AUTO FOCUS, and they wrote and directed the comedy SCREWED. They have also written numerous family films, including PROBLEM CHILD, PROBLEM CHILD 2, AGENT CODY BANKS, and GOOSEBUMPS. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Counselor... come out come out wherever you are! With the new Apple TV series about to launch, we thought it might be the perfect time to revisit Martin Scorsese's 1991 thriller Cape Fear. Some say it is an overlooked and underrated entry in Scorsese's filmography while others see it as nothing more than Marty cashing a paycheck. Is it a remake done right or is it too violent and too pulpy? Who is sexier: Robert DeNiro or Nick Nolte? Is there a hidden meaning behind the Problem Child theatre scene? What is the minimum time required for sexual intercourse and maximum time required for a fireworks display? Learn about loss and enter the Ninth Circle of Hell and on this week's episode of Film Junk.

Screenwriters/producers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski have written some of the most offbeat and imaginative movies of the last three decades, including "Ed Wood," "The People vs. Larry Flynt," "Man on the Moon" and "Big Eyes." Gilbert and Frank dropped by Scott and Larry's hotel as the boys prepped for the MOMA premiere of "Big Eyes" to talk about everything from their critically reviled debut film, "Problem Child" (featuring a certain shrill-voiced comedian) to their attempts at a Marx Brothers biopic and an "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" sequel. PLUS: Margaret Keane's existential crisis! Kelton the Cop demands a cameo! Gallagher vs. Gallagher II! “Ed Wood & Bela Lugosi: A Love Story”! And Scott and Larry meet the King of Pop! Terrell Carter sits down with Lalaa Shepard for a powerful episode of Skipping Class presented by The Progress Report. In this episode, Terrell Carter opens up about his role as Varney on Beauty in Black, working with Tyler Perry, and how acting has impacted his real life — including fans reacting to his character. He also shares deeply personal moments about his upbringing, including his mother's story, being raised by his grandmother, and the emotional journey that inspired his new book ‘Problem Child' and album ‘Mr. Carter'. Terrell talks about: • His transition from church singing with Fred Hammond to acting • Lessons he had to unlearn to become his best self • Why he doesn't want to be a father • The meaning behind his book “Problem Child” • How “Beauty in Black” influenced his music • Defining what “progress” truly means This is one of Terrell Carter's most honest conversations yet.
Send a textYou can tell within five minutes whether a fighter is performing for the camera or telling you exactly who he is. Matthew Nore, the undefeated super middleweight prospect known as The Real Problem Child, is telling us exactly who he is. We bring him on to talk about growing up in Newburgh, New York, repping the 845, and how that environment built the chip on his shoulder that still shows up every time the gloves go on.We get specific about the moments that shaped him: school fights, a short fuse, getting put on medication as a kid, and the slow shift from trouble to training. Then we dig into the clips that made him blow up online, like snapping punches that knock stacked tires off their base and blasting a bucket of rocks because the gym demands it. If you're into boxing strength and conditioning, fight mentality, and what “hard work” actually looks like day to day, this conversation puts real context behind the viral footage. From there it turns into pure boxing talk: amateur knockouts in headgear, the brutal reality of cutting weight, and why three pounds can change everything. Nore breaks down sparring in Georgia, why good work can be hard to find, and what happens when someone asks for rounds and then wants you to ease up mid-session. We also talk career direction, being a free agent, staying ready for short-notice opportunities, and the dream test he keeps coming back to: sharing a ring with David Benavidez.THE SPAR-INN ON YOUTUBE

“Man of a Thousand Voices” Billy West has lent his unique talents to projects such as “Ren & Stimpy,” Matt Groening's “Futurama,” “Looney Tunes” cartoons and of course, “The Howard Stern Show,” where he won over longtime listeners with his savagely funny impressions of Larry Fine, former Stern show writer Jackie Martling and late Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott. In this classic episode, Gilbert and Frank rang up Billy at his home in Hollywood to compare notes on some of their favorite essential topics, including Bud Abbott, Gale Gordon, Peter Lorre, Al “Grandpa” Lewis, and the racism of "Dick Tracy" cartoons. PLUS: the true story behind the voice of Dr. Zoidberg! Billy jams with The Beach Boys! Jewish Frankenstein! Angry Munchkins! And Gilbert sings the theme song from “Problem Child”! Tenesha L. Curtis has been a lover of the dark, disturbing, and deviant since childhood. In her kindergarten and elementary school years, her favorite movies included classics like "Child's Play," "Problem Child," "Candyman," and "Adventures in Babysitting." As she learned to read, she finally broke away from Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys (at the behest of a middle school teacher) and delved into reading literature from artists like Toni Morrison, Edgar Allan Poe, Patricia Cornwell, Mildred D. Taylor, Alvin Schwartz, Ayn Rand, and Maya Angelou. Her fascination with the human psyche led her to earning a master's degree in addictions psychotherapy and working in the mental health world for over a decade. She uses this training and experience to influence straightforward books on writing made especially for newbie authors, and thrilling works of fiction in various genres. In this instalment of TYP, Pete Shepherd, Tiff and the Problem Child talk about Seth Godin's Purple Cow concept (what it is and why it matters), the 'um' epidemic (the Spakfilla of conversation), how crazy-fast little kids learn (Pete has a two-year-old), knowing when and how to change the direction and energy of a conversation (or presentation) which is dying a painful death, building interpersonal connection with story, metaphor and humour, learning styles, and how to create rapport with an audience in under a minute. Trump is like a dysfunctional 8-year-old whose parents are always in the principal's office arguing that their son is a good boy. The media, CEOs, and Wall Street keep giving him a pass for his behavior while his supporters and apologists explain why he just had to set the school on fire. At the same time, he's empowering ideologues behind the scenes who are dismantling the government and executing their policy wet dreams. Plus, Joni Ernst's Senate tenure has been a sham, Vance tries Mickey Mouse Stalinism on for size, and what's going on with the bruising on Trump's right hand? Steve Chadie, a 25+ year veteran of the recording industry, began his career as an intern at Willie Nelson's Pedernales recording studio in 1995, quickly working his way up to Assistant Engineer for Larry Greenhill. He stayed on at Pedernales until the doors closed commercially in 2012. Picture the scene: You're a young screenwriter getting your first taste of success — but it's with a movie that didn't quite come out the way you wanted and the victory feels hollow. Suddenly, you find yourself being typecast as a writer of silly comedies while the industry boxes you out and the opportunities and (self)respect begin to slip away. What do you do? If you're Larry Karaszewski (and long time screenwriting partner Scott Alexander) you swerve hard out of that lane and typecast YOURSELF as auteurs of your own re-invented genre: The Anti-Biopic! Out of this savvy strategy the enduring classic ED WOOD is born and you are swept up in Hollywood's warm and loving embrace. Cut to a montage of THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, MAN ON THE MOON, BIG EYES and a lifetime of accolades, happiness and total fulfillment. THE END! On this episode we talk to Larry about going to inappropriate movies at the drive-in with his dad, a college experience that actually paid off, writing PROBLEM CHILD and then watching Robert DeNiro watch it, having a roommate that wrote HEATHERS, resurrecting Frank Perry, producing AUTO FOCUS, David Schwimmer as Robert Kardashian, orphan films, Milos Forman, and we pick the best(!!!) New York movies.

By Chuck Smith - Today, we look at some of the events that made Jesus Christ a problem child for His earthly parents. Were you a problem child for your parents? God is working with those He is calling now.
Happy Mother's Day! We're celebrating moms with five old time radio mysteries where they play major roles. In “The Case of the Lucky Shilling,” Sherlock Holmes comes to the aid of a woman whose son is wiped out by a crooked gambler (originally aired on Mutual on January 14, 1948), and George Valentine tries to prove that a woman is not an unfit mother in “Problem Child” from Let George Do It (originally aired on Mutual on June 21, 1948). A woman hires Dan Holiday to prove her son's death wasn't an accident in “Suicide or Murder” from Box 13, and the mother of an escaped convict wants Richard Diamond to send her son back to prison (originally aired on NBC on October 4, 1950). Finally, the cops of Dragnet are on the trail of a serial shoplifter who only steals clothes for children in “The Big Little Mother” (originally aired on NBC on October 6, 1953).
GGACP celebrates the birthday of singer and actor Josh Groban (b. February 27) by revisiting an animated conversation conducted in Josh's Manhattan home way back in 2015. In this episode, Josh shares his passion for comedy, his affection for the “Problem Child” movies and his memories of guest-starring on “The Office” and “Ally McBeal.” Also, Josh coins a catch phrase, tackles the role of Tevye (at age 17!), mimics Jay Leno and performs with Sting and Barbra Streisand. PLUS: “The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T.”! Gladys Knight & The Pips! “The Beastmaster”! Old Groucho returns! And Josh sings “the hits” of Gilbert Gottfried! Learn more about your ad choices. GGACP celebrates American Heart Month by presenting this ENCORE of a 2020 interview with actress, activist and founder of The John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health, Amy Yasbeck. In this episode, Amy talks about golden age comedians, the directing style of Mel Brooks, working with Gilbert on “Wings” and the “Problem Child” franchise, and the playfulness and generosity of John Ritter. Also, Morey Amsterdam sings “Yuk-a-Puk,” Gilbert gets nominated for a Razzie, Amy cuts the rug with Leslie Nielsen and Jack Warden changes accents in mid-movie. PLUS: Emil Sitka! “The New Love American Style”! Anne Bancroft plays Maria Ouspenskaya! John borrows shtick from Jerry Lewis! And 6-year-old Amy pitches the Easy-Bake Oven! https://johnritterfoundation.org/ Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
