    Ivy Insights

The Recording Studio Rockstars podcast is an incredibly informative and entertaining show that covers all aspects of recording, production, and mixing. Hosted by Lij Shaw, the podcast stands out due to his ability to connect with guests on a personal and professional level. The transitions between the guests' stories and technical discussions are seamless, and Shaw always asks the right questions to elicit great responses.

One of the best aspects of the podcast is the high level of technical advice that is provided. The advice given by Shaw and his guests is practical and can be applied in real-world studio situations. Whether you are a beginner or have been in the industry for decades, there is always something valuable to take away from each episode. Additionally, hearing from veteran industry professionals such as Andrew Scheps, George Massenburg, Joe Chicarelli, and Bill Schnee provides unique insights into their experiences.

Shaw's knowledge and skill in explaining recording technology and techniques are evident throughout the podcast. However, what sets him apart is his enthusiasm for getting listeners involved in music production regardless of their skill level or budget. His interviews are not only educational but also inspiring, reminding listeners of the joy of creating music in the studio.

While it may not be a major drawback, one aspect that could be improved upon is making the podcast more discoverable. Some listeners mentioned that they had only recently stumbled upon this valuable resource and wished they had found it earlier. However, this minor flaw does not detract from the overall quality of the content provided.

In conclusion, The Recording Studio Rockstars podcast is an exceptional resource for anyone interested in recording, production, or mixing music. The combination of expert guests, technical advice, engaging interviews, and Shaw's passion for music make each episode informative and entertaining. Whether you are a student of music production or simply love music, this podcast provides pure entertainment while offering valuable insight into the industry.

He then landed his first audio job with Infrasonic Mastering in 2012 where he assisted Pete Lyman, while simultaneously learning the craft of vinyl mastering and lacquer cutting. Soon thereafter, he started his own Townsend Mastering until 2021 when he rejoined Infrasonic Los Angeles. Nick has mastered records for The Egyptian Lover, Militarie Gun, No Pressure, Fleshwater, Spanish Love Songs and many more, and specializes in vinyl mastering and lacquer cutting of over 2,000 vinyl records including artists such as Cheap Trick, Paramore, Weezer, Iron Maiden, Bad Religion, Garbage, Dr. Dre, 2pac, Grimes and more. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Raelynn Janicke, a mastering engineer and the studio manager for Infrasonic Mastering, based in Nashville, TN. Raelynn has mastered and assisted on projects for The Shins, Kayla Hall, Nefesh Mountain, Talia Stewart, Big 50, and Eli Howard. Raelynn got her Bachelor's Degree in Applied Arts and Sciences, with Concentrations in Audio Engineering and Computer Science, from The Rochester Institute of Technology. Much like her career thus far, Raelynn's path to her degree was self-made. She was initially drawn to the practicality of a job in computer programming, but switched majors halfway through her program after assisting on a college a cappella record. From there, she discovered the school's modest audio program, created an individualized degree, and threw in minors in history and music technology, just to keep things interesting. Raelynn brings this level of enthusiasm and exploration to every project she works on at Infrasonic Mastering, both as manager and engineer. She describes herself on her website as a “Mastering Engineer Who Loves Tacos and Is Taller Than Danny Devito.” Thanks to F Reid Shippen for connecting us. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Nick Bullock a Nashville based producer, engineer, musician, and artist. One of the many things I was taught as a young man was to follow my curiosity. That curiosity led me to music school, to my band of ten years (and over fifteen hundred shows worldwide), and to my love of recording today. It leads me to ask questions even when I felt stupid asking them. Each and every one of those questions, and the discoveries that came afterwards have led to a wonderful life and relationship with music, and the artists I work with. Following that curiosity is one of the main reasons I'm still in love with music and recording. Every day I do my best to live by some pretty simple principles; be honest, be present, try to learn something new, help others dig deep to be the best version of themselves they can be, and when in doubt, always reference a Beatles or Stones song (not kidding). So here I am, living in Nashville, TN, married to the love of my life, Meredith (also an amazing visual artist) with three incredible (and curious) boys. I get to make music every day in one of the greatest studios in the world. Each day is a gift. I'm eternally grateful that I get to create music with some of the best people in the world. King, ZZ Top, Albert Collins, Al Green, Jerry Lee Lewis, and many others. He has also served as 2nd Vice President and member of the Board of Governors for the Memphis Chapter of the NARAS, and he is a voting member of the Recording Academy and a professional member of the Audio Engineering Society.  Dan has received many awards including the MTSU Alumni Association True Blue Citation of Distinction for MTSU Faculty, the MTSU Distinguished Achievement in Creative Activity Award, the Tennessee Board of Regents Academic Excellence and Quality Award, the MTSU Outstanding Teacher Award, and the Recording Industry Outstanding Alumni Award for University Service, and was inducted into the MTSU Band of Blue Hall of Fame. But most significantly for this interview, Dan was my audio teacher 30 years ago when I was at MTSU as an undergraduate student learning the basics of audio and recording. Dan taught me with a black board and three recording studios everything audio including the difference between various types of microphones, audio signal flow, the science of sound and hearing, flow charts for mixing consoles, and how to align an analog tape machine. Basically, Dan was the first teacher in my life to teach me stuff that would carry forward to change my life and career and inspire me to make records for 30 years. And the only part I regret is making those stupid bubble charts to represent audio mixes. You know the ones with a big bubble for the kick drum and a little bubble for the hi hat. Since records are being made more often by independent sources with smaller budgets that cannot always afford the high dollar mixer the need for quality mastering is very much in demand. “Music will always be a part of our lives. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Billy Decker aka The Deckerator is an award winning Nashville mixing engineer known for his efficient and effective mixing method.  He's mixed 16 Billboard #1”s to date such as Dustin Lynch's “Riding Roads” and notable artists as Sam Hunt, Chris Young, Rodney Atkins, Parmalee, Colt Ford, and the metal band Starset to name just a few. He also mixed George Jones's last album before he passed. Billy Decker made history in July of 2014 when Sam Hunt became the most added new artist of all time.  Decker works in a unique way. “I mix really fast. Most of my mixes are finished within an hour. To be able to do this, I use a lot of templates in pro tools. Instead of spending two hours EQing a kick drum I can do it in thirty seconds, because I have set up templates for the album that outline all the basic parameters for each instrument. I can then work on fine tuning - working on the entire mix, rather than focusing on individual adjustments. It's a good way to work. It's fast efficient and most importantly it's fun."
